Dearest film fan, A powerful film projected in the theatre breathes life into a room. Wondrous stories open up new worlds. That is the magic of cinema. A magic that is perhaps even more true for youth film. This is exactly why I love the JEF festival. It delivers quirky, superb films to theatres, children's homes, schools, and hospitals. It broadens the horizons of children and young people and fires the imagination in their heads. Through a diverse and quality film experience, and a fresh approach to the audiovisual medium (including games, online video, VR, etc.), children and young people are stimulated to grow culturally and develop their artistic and creative potential. This 34th edition of the JEF festival takes place in various Flemish cities, as well as online, but Antwerp is the festival's base and hometown. As Antwerp wants to continue positioning itself as an international city of art and culture with a rich past and a creative future, we are happy to work together with JEF vzw and their distinctive festival 'by and for youngsters'. Together we are expanding the festival into an international cultural city festival. And as far as I'm concerned, that's pretty positive! Enjoy this year's extensive selection of films, workshops, masterclasses, games, and more. Who knows, maybe we'll run into each other during the festival period! Pantelis Panteloglou has studied Social Anthro pology in Athens and has obtained an MA on Social Exclusion and Minorities. He has been working in the audiovisual sector, cinema and theatre since 2003 in various creative and organisational positions. Since 2011, he has been working for Olympia International Film Festival's for Children and Young People. Throughout the years, he has been responsible for film selection, printed material, international relations and exchanges and trans lations. He is currently the deputy artistic director of OIFF.

Angelo Tijssens creates theatre at Ontroerend Goed and is a screenwriter for projects such as the movies Girl and Close (in collaboration with director Lukas Dhont). Before that, he has directed a few short films with Gilles Coulier. Currently, he is adapting Fleur Pierets’ book, Julian, for the screen. He lives and works in Antwerp, where he used to go to drama school.

Sahim Omar Kalifa is a Belgian-Kurdish filmmaker based in Belgium. In 2001 he came to Belgium and in 2008 he got a Master degree in filmmaking at Sint-Lukas Film School – Brussels. So far he has won more than 105 International awards. In 2021 he filmed the long version of Baghdad Messi and the feature documentary Iraq's Invisible Beauty. Both projects are expected in 2022.

student competition jury Niels Putman is a film journalist and critic, curator and programmer, editor-in-chief of the online short film magazines Kortfim.be and Talking Shorts, and film distributor at Avila, an online video platform for Belgian cinema. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Short Film Conference, and of the Belgian Film Press Union and FIPRESCI.

Elodie Mellado graduated in Audiovisual Communication from the Rovira i Virgili University in 2012. She has been working as an editor on the Spanish VOD Filmin platform since then, where she is in charge of the curation and programming of the content and is also responsible for the Filmin KIDS section. In addition, she has been a programmer at REC Film Festival in Tarragona since 2020 and a juror at film festivals such as Serielizados or El Meu Primer Festival.

She continued her studies with the film program at KASK (Royal Academy of Fine Arts), where she obtained her bachelor with the film L’étrange Guérison de Luna (2018) and successfully finished her master with The indigo tree or the descent of the twins (2020).

In this medium she found a way to combine theoretical research with a personal art practice. Diëgo Nurse studied computer science in Amsterdam, and film at the MAD-Faculty in Genk and LUCA School of Arts in Brussels. His ADD is a major asset guaranteeing a constant stream of new ideas. Diëgo incorporates social topics into his work and combines different art forms.

Pepijn Claus is a 29-year-old animator and illustrator with a great love for (animated) film, graphic design, teaching and coffee. He animated on productions such as Urbanus—De Vuilnisheld and Where Is Anne Frank.

Klaas Cockx is Program Manager Fiction & Comedy at SBS Belgium's Play4 & GoPlay. Together with the program directors, he selects the fiction projects they want to have made for their channels. He also supervises all aspects of the production process, from script to broadcast. “The projects considered for our Play channels must take a surprising look at the world we live in, while being positive and inclusive. They should be innovative but accessible, relevant but entertaining, delivered with both gusto and quality.”

Ben Segers
After graduating from Studio Herman Teirlinck in 1998, actor Ben Segers co-founded the theatre collective Olympique Dramatique, where he still performs regularly. Meanwhile, he became one of the most popular faces on the Flemish screens. You may know him from his film debut as police officer Nico in Any way the wind blows, as one of the stars in the sketch comedy series Wat als? (What if?), or as Luc Turlinkckx from Safety first. His most recent achievement is a celebrated dramatic role as a troubled star actor in the feature film Dealer, Jeroen Perceval's directing debut. In this film, Ben Segers demonstrates yet another side of his versatility. Why is he over the moon to be the JEF festival's godfather this year? “I am nothing short of honoured to be a godfather. Shows and cartoons from my childhood linger in my memory to this day. Children and young people are fueled by great stories. They trigger the imagination in a time where short content seems to have become the norm.”
Jean Janssens
Actor Jean Janssens heard the call of the creative spotlight early on and started their stage career at the local theatre group in their native Olen. Yet they took a detour, via the military school in Brussels and a study in psychology, to end up on our screens. In 2018 they debuted as a 19-year-old in the Ketnet series Campus 12, followed by roles in D5R, telenovela Lisa, Ketnet musical Knock-Out and Ketnet series Schijtluizen. They dream of watching themselves on a big cinema screen, which is why they are the perfect ambassador of the JEF festival. Thanks to their latest role as Sari in the sci-fi series Gamekeepers, you can also ask them anything about this year's science theme and all the apps and games in the medialab. “When I was asked to be festival godmother, I was extremely happy! I am very excited to see the films. Youth films helped shape my personality and my world view. For example, I identified a lot with the French film Tomboy, about 10-year-old Laure who pretends to be Mikhael in her new town.”

Anke Brouwers is a film teacher at the School of Arts (HoGent), and freelance film journalist, editor and screenwriter. Her book about the silent film, Mooi zijn & zwijgen. De machtige vrouwen van het Amerikaanse stille scherm, was recently published by publishing company Vrijdag. Lennart Soberon is a postdoctoral film researcher at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and film programmer of KASKcinema (HoGent). He did his PhD on the enemy image in the American action movie. He currently works on the themes of spatiality, migration and national borders. He is also the co-founder of the cinephile platform Kinoautomat in Ghent.

Elke Desutter is a visual artist who lives and works in Bruges. In the last few years, she helped realise and curate projects such as Bokashi be, Inside/out, and Passion & Obsession. Individual projects like Donate Yourself and the Book of Bruises started from an archive of images of models who she recruits through open calls and photographs herself. Some of the themes she works on are objectification, censorship, pareidolias and the body. Her practice explores the literal objectification of the body by means of photo and video collages, installations and assemblies.

Maï Calon is a filmmaker and illustrator. In her audiovisual work she often focuses on sound and rhythm. Maï graduated from KASK in 2018 with a master's degree in Audiovisual Arts-Animated Film. She is currently writing a new short film. She also leads a workshop at JEF, during which she inspires children and young people with film. Alex Akute is an multidisciplinary artist. The art forms that he practises most often are dancing, painting, and designing. He has always enjoyed caring for young people and creating an atmosphere where they can coexist with one another while maintaining their unique identities. This served him as a mobilisation agent to start Xray Community, a place where young people come together to share creativity and inspire positive growth under close guidance. Together with 15 young people and the help of the organisation Fameus Antwerpen, Alex has been able to create a space where new friendships, creativity, sharing and performance co-exist.

Specifically for JEF festival 2022, Het Bos and Boslabs organise the youth film week from February 28 until March 3. Under the guidance of Manuel Janssens and Adams Mensah, the youngsters get the tools and the know-how to make their own film in four days and to show it on the closing night on March 5! They will choose their own scenario and select who will take on which role, both in front of and behind the camera. the masters
Manuel Janssens is an Antwerp-based director and cameraman. He studied film direction at the RITCS in Brussels. In 2013, he received his bachelor's degree with the horror short film Boules of Death and in 2015 his master's degree with the mythological Roof. Both films played at various film festivals. Manuel's short films are imbued with a surreal atmosphere in which the visual takes precedence over the narrative. He prefers to work with nonprofessional young actors and as a cameraman and videographer he worked for several cultural institutions. In addition, Manuel is in the process of starting up Cinedraries, a film club for Antwerp youth, in which he combines culture and creativity with guerrilla filmmaking. Adams Mensah is a self-taught artist. As a filmmaker, playwright, producer, actor, and curator, he has a voice of his own. He writes his own film and theatre work, and collaborates on the work of others in various roles. His work often departs from an autobiographical perspective and presents worldly stories in which various life questions are addressed, such as migration, North-South, bi-cultural roots, parent-child relationships, family and bureaucracy. In different languages he enters into the conversation about expectations and dreams. In recent years he has also been actively involved in mentoring young/new creators.

Panoptic VR Cabinets of wonder VR
Panoptic is a tense, one-on-one asymmetrical VR vs desktop game. A laser-eyed Overseer is put against a tiny Being, planning to destroy the Overseer's energy sources. The tiny being is able to remain undetected by mimicking the movements of others. Developed from a multi-award winning game jam prototype, Panoptic lets one player enter virtual reality as the Overseer. The other player uses a desktop computer to become one of the tiny Beings. In an unsettling, mysterious atmosphere that hints at a dark and secretive legends, Panoptic features several levels and environments, a wondrous sense of scale, and short but intense rounds.

In a search for the mystery of childhood, we meet numerous children who touch us deeply, each in their own way: Wisdom (11) a German boy of Cameroonian descent, Joline (12) a girl with dyslexia, Elias (14) diagnosed with autism and Roja (12) who fled from Iran to Germany two years ago. They all have one thing in common: they don't fit into our functional society and long for a place where they can stay as long as they wish and where nobody tells them what to do. The VR experience makes the ‘wonder rooms’ of these children more accessible, even for us… The term ‘cabinet of wonder’ does not only contain a collection of objects, but also a collection of inner landscapes in our brains and thoughts. You can walk through it and snoop around. Amazement, that's what it's all about.

Building is not only more efficient but also cheaper thanks to artificial intelligence. Will you succeed in building an ideal tower with smart cameras aimed at you and your teammates? Put a team together, think carefully about who carries out which task and don't procrastinate too much, because the clock is ticking. Also, don't forget to keep an eye on your budget: too much money spent? A transporter delayed? Is the architect starting to build with you? All that will cost you penalty time and precious pennies. All the more reason, then, to come up with a plan of action. Fortunately, cameras help make your construction project a success. Did you succeed in building a tower? Then take a moment to think about what could be done better and play the game again. Try to gain even more points and destroy the previous record.

Eden shows how she and her brother Lion look at the coronavirus. She likes to make memories for later. That's how she came up with the idea of this film and asked her mom to film her. During editing, Eden selected the footage herself and picked what she found interesting to convey to the general public. Mom was merely the remote control and followed her daughter's instructions. The title was also chosen by the children themselves. Almost every morning they were (and sometimes still are) woken up with the song 'Bella Ciao'.

The teachers think the class is sleeping peacefully, but the students have other plans. Teacher Simon Saelens heard about the competition during the Teacher's Day at Filmfest Ghent and launched the idea in class. After a free text session, the concept of the snowball fight was born. The kids came up with the whole story and together they made a storyboard. They agreed to bring pyjamas, stuffed animals, and white sheets to school. After a few filming sessions before the Christmas vacation, they had enough footage to edit the film. →

Jelle Mels from Flemish children's news programme Karrewiet moderates the debate while the panel members give their ideas about a sustainable future. The participating classes can also ask the panel a question. What do the pupils want to change in the world? What do they think about themes such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fake news, the climate, and much more. Besides debating, the show is also full of interactive games and assignments. JEF in the hospital JEF wants to give all kids the opportunity to experience the JEF festival. That's why we stream short and feature films selected from the participating countries, so kids with limited mobility can enjoy them from the comforts of their bed. Accompanying every film they can watch short intros and a variety of extras. Every short film in competition can win an award on this platform, chosen by the children at the hospitals! The hospital project was founded by JEF in 2011 and is currently running in 6 countries: Belgium, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Sweden. Ket & Doc meeting

Ket & Doc, that's five documentaries for young audiences, premiering at the JEF festival. Every year, eight directors are selected for a series of workshops in which they learn how to work tailored to a young audience and develop a film plan under the guidance of tutors. During a final pitch (17 January), they try to convince producers. Five of these projects are selected to go into production. When the films (15’ each) are ready, they will premiere at the JEF festival and will be screened on Ketnet (public broadcaster). JEF follows the directors during their journey and organises a focus group, in which the filmmakers present a rough version of their work to a panel of young viewers. They tailor the details of their film to the target audience. During the festival, the filmmakers meet their young audiences and engage in a discussion. And together with all directors and partners, on this occasion, the starting signal is given for a new season of five superb documentaries that will hopefully premiere in 2023… at the JEF festival! On February 26, the JEF festival brings this new generation of documentary makers together with their predecessors from earlier editions for a joint Ket & Doc celebration.

Rosalie and Mr Moon, by scriptwriter Brigitte Minne and producer Cédric Igodt (CineVenture) This preschool animation series tells about Rosalie, a mischievous duck having fun with her colourful bunch of friends, and Mr. Moon, a wise gentleman in posh pajamas, who takes care of her. All the time Rosalie is ready to create chaos, but luckily with the help of her friends, things work out just fine. Empire, by scriptwriter Charlotte De Corte and producer Mark Daems (Associate directors) A young woman finds a new life in a group of dancers living together and makes every effort to maintain the happiness of the situation. But through dance she comes to realise that life is nothing but movement and change.

This year's theme for the Exhibitor's Day is "movie experience for the little ones". In the morning, we have sessions and round-table discussions where we dive into programming adapted to toddlers, and we provide inspiring and practical examples. One of the speakers is Telidja Klai, content manager at Ketnet. She explains more about developmental psychology in toddlers: how does a preschooler's brain work and how does film influence that? In the afternoon, there is room for prospecting movies.

Webinar Shifting the gaze: Prism
What happens behind, before and beyond the creation process of the brand new Belgian youth series Hacked? How can this process help in changing perspectives on inclusive representation in film? And how do we deal with technical limitations, when we realize that when we use the camera it doesn't record images without bias, without prejudice and it is definitely not neutral. The experiences of the makers from Hacked (tbc) in combination with the personal story of Rosine Mbakam and the researchers point of view of An van. Dienderen (both directors of Prism) can give us a first insight in how we can shift the gaze.

Is your project child friendly? Those who work on a project for a young audience (films, short films, series, webseries…) will receive the ultimate tool from JEF: a pitching session with the target audience! During the children's pitches at the JEF festival the makers (scriptwriter, director, producer…) will present their ideas to a panel of children of the right age. Based on their feedback the makers will be able to further refine or adjust their idea. Afterwards, the project will receive a “child friendly” certificate. With the children's pitches the JEF festival offers a service to: → Filmmakers who work on a high-quality young audience project. → Producers who gain a better understanding in their project. → Children who get a say in films that are made for them. The six participating projects were selected from all entries by a jury of professionals.

about JEF JEF'S MISSION
A diverse range of youth films broadens the perspective of children and young people. This offers them opportunities to better determine the world they want to live in. JEF makes youth film available to exhibitors, visible and accessible to a wide and diverse audience as well as during school and leisure time. Through its active role in network organizations, JEF is the youth film contact for policy makers and the (inter)national film industry. At JEF, children and young people find a place to create, experience, and critically review film together. For and by youngsters is one of the central mottos throughout the JEF organisation.
WHAT IS A JEF FILM?
JEF is the guide for high-quality children's films. JEF's interpretation of the word “highquality” includes the following: We provide films for all ages: from toddlers to teenagers and young adults. This does not mean that our films are only interesting for children. It is important to JEF that everyone can enjoy our films, both young and old.

We do not want to patronise children. They can also handle topics that the mainstream culture and media barely deal with. To us, children's films are not only films that are initially meant for young people, but in particular films that will be interesting for a young audience without age limit. We are constantly looking for a great diversity in genres, formats, themes and styles that will surprise and challenge this wide-ranging target audience. Despite the fact that the variety of our films depends highly on international production, we are still striving for a balance between animation and live action, fiction and documentary, drama and comedy, short film and feature film… In addition, it is important to us that not only our films are varied, but that they also appeal to a diverse audience. We look for films with relevant and current topics that are in line with the daily experience of a diverse audience, topics that broaden their world view and give the audience the opportunity to decide what world they want to live in. Films that deal with original topics are refreshing to us. We select films that preferably avoid stereotypes and that aim for sufficient gender diversity, both for the characters and for the creators. The selection of our films always complements or reinforces the market: we bring films to an audience with the goals to broaden the existing supply on the market. We also support films from other distributors that fit into our vision, by bringing them to a broader audience through a deepening film experience. We strongly focus on offering and programming European films. However, we also like to keep up with the productions of other continents. By means of our international network and thorough market prospection we stay on top of things. We are looking for films with a trademark from the author: to us, the desire to make the film, the authenticity and the craftsmanship of the film maker outweigh the commercial potential or the size of the production.

This model provides you with tools to stimulate film literacy among children and young people – as a teacher, a parent or a youth worker. The model also gives you an insight into the working methods of JEF.

a powerful medium that can direct and widen our perspective, challenging us to adopt a critical and resilient attitude. Film is an art form, but is also used in entertainment, journalism and personal communication. Film literacy focuses on film in all its forms including: documentary, live action, animated film, virtual reality film, cinematic games.
In our model for film literacy, JEF focuses on four film components: 1.
The story
What is this film about? What is the documentary maker's perspective on the subject? In which socio-cultural, historical or political context is the story situated? Who is the film for? Do you think the film has a specific audience in mind? 2. The cinematographic language How to interpret this scene? What impact does the editing have on the viewer? Which special meaning is given to the use of colours in this film? Does the coherence of cinematic choices result in a certain vision? 3. The film process Who does what on the set? Which tasks are being undertaken? What happens after the shooting? What steps should we take to develop a cinematic game? 4. Audiovisual techniques How do you handle a camera? How are visual effects created? How does stop-motion animation technology work?

Film literacy objectives By summing up these different aspects, JEF uses three strategic objectives, that can be seen as a set of skills, attitudes and knowledge that children and young people develop. 1. The development of critical skills, attitudes and knowledge. You can value film as an art form and communicative medium. You can recognize the specific cultural context and/ or vision reflected in a film. You are capable to compare them with your own reference framework. You realize that certain film-technical choices can influence a viewer's perception. You can critically comment on a film and you are open to the opinion of others. 2. The development of creative skills, attitudes and knowledge. 3. The development of cultural skills, attitudes and knowledge. You reflect on your own learning process. You can work together and share your knowledge about film (making) with others. You look at various film creations with an open mind. You can develop more social awareness by being open to the specific cultural context of a film. In this model these objectives are not strictly defined; they can blur into another and reinforce each other. In the context of a film literacy activity, the focus can be on one objective, but you will find that you will always be including at least one extra objective. For example: When creating your own school video, you will be mainly stimulating creative skills, and in addition your students will be learning to work together as a team. While make a video, students will be consciously evaluating their own creation and reflecting on the learning process: all crucial for a project's success. Thus both cultural and critical skills are stimulated.

Film literacy competences JEF achieves these objectives by focusing on different competencies of children and young people. These competencies can be combined endlessly. E You can try out something new with an open mind E You can actively watch and observe. E You can personally reflect upon and test your own reference framework. E You can analyze and explore meanings. E You can think creatively, experiment and get involved in a creative process. E By working with audiovisual media, you can create a product in which your ideas are creatively expressed. E You can share your experiences, product and opinion with others. A film literacy activity is always a combination of various competencies following one after another as a consecutive entity. Their order isn’t fixed. The intensity and importance given to every single competence depends upon the ability of the group and the objective you want to achieve.

A film literacy mix Components, objectives and competencies can be mutually combined. Through every cinematic component, a creative, cultural or critical objective can be achieved by focusing on various competencies. Thus in every activity you can create your own film literacy mix, based on the current and desired competencies of your group. For example: You want to stimulate your participants’ critical look at propaganda. Therefore you can introduce them to a specific visual language: the film-technical aspects (for example: editing, sound) that would convince an audience about a product. This can be done by asking them to look, reflect and analyze, but you can also ask them to record a convincing message themselves. Which techniques should they use to convince an audience? To what extent does this correspond with common advertising messages? For example: You want participants to develop cultural skills and empathize with the world of transgender people. First you can ask them to reflect on the theme of identity. Then ask them to watch the movie Just Charlie. Let them watch three fragments illustrating Charlie's process of coming out. Ask participants to describe what's happening in those scenes, what the characters experience and what meaning they give to it. The participants will become familiar with the psychological background of the main character and link it with their own world. Pupils discover that the process in the film is universal, because every teenager one way or another wrestles with his or her own identity.
