’m a news junkie. It comes from having worked 15 years as a television anchor. The upside to that career is that I’ve been able to experience some incredible events in person. Anthony Luciano’s passion to create one-of-a-kind handbags started at an extremely early age. A Tireless Pursuit of Winemaking and Culinary Perfection

hooting photographs for Nathan Chroman’s book The Treasury of American Wines proved to be serendipitous for Jack and Dolores Cakebread, who took the opportunity to casually offer to buy the Sturdivant Ranch in Rutherford, California. The year was 1973, and the genesis of what would be one of the most successful and respected wineries in America had taken root.

With vineyard properties located throughout Napa Valley, as well as a location in the Anderson Valley, the winery today owns 13 sites totaling 1,100 acres, 560 of which are currently planted. This judicious acquisition and development of vineyard land has proven to be a recipe for success and one of the cornerstones of the Napa wine scene.

My recent trip to explore this slice of the winemaking world proved to be one that was not only extremely educational, but was highlighted by Cakebread’s rather impressive culinary program spearheaded by Culinary Director Brian Streeter. Fine food is interwoven throughout the Cakebread experience and seems to

be closely tied to the development of their wines. Annually, the winery hosts an American Harvest Workshop — a four-day “boot camp” where chefs, sommeliers, press and consumers interact, and is designed to increase awareness and appreciation of American viticulture and artisanal food products.

After touring some of their exquisitely beautiful properties ϐ and Marketing Dennis Cakebread, I had the distinct pleasure of joining him for a superb lunch at the winery. The inspiration of the surrounding environment, and the palpable passion of their team, ϐ ISSUE 3 . 2015

After an afternoon of exploring downtown Napa and its charming shops, and mingling with its affable residents, it was time to quickly refresh prior to heading to one of the highest and most spectacular peaks overlooking Napa Valley. It is here on Howell Mountain, behind multiple gates, amidst a breathtaking property, where they grow the extraordinary fruit that sports the moniker Dancing Bear Vineyard. This is another of Cakebread’s many properties and an homage to an interesting history of an epic, but kind, battle with local bears who seemed to have simply fallen in love with their berries. It was also here that I would share another wine-paired feast with President Bruce Cakebread. Yes, this really is a family affair, as well as a continually growing company that seems to embrace that culture at every turn.

After a couple of days of exploring the Cakebread history, I decided to spend a night at Auberge du Soleil, considered by many to be Napa’s premier hotel destination and one that bears the Relais & Chateaux seal.

This entire property is reminiscent of a trip through Provence Ȅ ϐ Ǧ ϐ Ǥ plush interiors highlight a bright, rich look reminiscent of a secluded Côte d’Azur retreat.

If it is relaxation and pampering that is needed, Auberge Spa, a haven modeled after a centuries-old monastery, continues to be one of the most acclaimed in the country and is well worth a walk down the meandering hillside.

After some world-class relaxation at Auberge Spa and La Plage, a sexy, laid-back outdoor pool and living room where hotel guests can lazily spend hours lounging poolside on oversized chaises or underneath gauze-draped canopies on day beds — the restaurant at Auberge du Soleil and its back-to-back Michelin stars were beckoning. Under the direction of Executive Chef Robert Curry, this famed Napa Valley restaurant is set amidst breathtaking valley views and, needless to say, the exquisite cuisine provided the perfect ending to a memorable day and an enlightening Napa experience.

Wanting to get a handle on how Napa Valley is shifting, along with what is now a storied history, I met with Scott Andersen, the Founder and President of Preferred Properties, a boutique luxury real estate brokerage specializing in estates, vineyards and wineries in the Napa Valley. Having grown up in the heart of wine country, Scott has been in the front row for many of the changes and has even had a hand in the transfer of ownership of some prized properties.

Scott’s latest project is handling the sale of one of Napa’s historic vineyards — Pope Valley Winery. Built in 1897 and bonded in 1909,

and now with over 100 years of history, the winery attracts wine ϐ the roots of the California wine industry. In fact, during the 1930s, Pope Valley Winery had ties to Al Capone, as their wines graced the tables of his speakeasies and brothels.

Among the winery’s points of interest are their barrel storage and the bottling room which sit at ground level, housed in the original hand-dug cave that took nine years of manual labor to complete.

Today, the more modern facilities of Pope Valley Winery specialize in producing handcrafted, award-winning, small-lot premium wines that are sold to domestic buyers as well as to international clientele as far away as Asia. Pope Valley has been the recipient of numerous awards and is truly a shining example of a winery that articulates a testament to tradition and a view toward the future.

One thing is for certain. The rich history of the Napa Valley embodies a story that continues to unfold. This is a community of farmers, artisans and visionaries whose shared dream is manifesting on a daily basis.

There are all kinds of people and companies out there who are doing or have done some amazing things but aren’t getting credit for it. I recently saw the Imitation Game. It’s a great movie that follows the extraordinary story of Alan Turing and his team of code crackers during World War II. I’d never heard of Alan Turing before this movie.

And prior to seeing it, if someone had asked me to rattle off the name of someone integral to the creation of computers, I probably would have said Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. Not Alan Turing, who is one of the founding fathers of computer science and the creator of what is considered a model of the general purpose computer. Mr. Turing was a best kept secret.

In the business world, for the most part, you don’t want to be a best kept secret. In fact, you want to be just the opposite. That’s

why people advertise and market their products. But sometimes, if a company has been around awhile — 30, 40, 50+ years — it can fall into the trap of assuming customers already know all of the great things about the product it manufactures. After all, if they’ve been around for that long, shouldn’t everyone know what’s great about their product?

Maybe . . . but it’s a risky assumption. Just how risky is usually unknown until someone new comes along and begins to take away market share.

When fresh competition enters the scene, it’s a good time for a company to evaluate the strength of its brand. Has it fallen into complacence and weakened or lost its brand signal? It can happen to the most respected, longest-standing companies out there. But as long as the foundational elements like a good product, solid differentiators and a customer base are still present, a brand can be revived.

So why do companies sometimes fail to communicate all the great things about their product or the way the product is manufactured?

Sometimes it’s that assumption that if they know what’s great about it, everyone else does, too. Sometimes it’s not recognizing all the things they do that make a product special. Sometimes it’s the fear that putting too much out there can inadvertently help the competition.

Whatever the reason, it’s essential to capitalize on what makes a product or service superior to others.

If a business falls into the category of not knowing what makes their product special, it takes an in-depth immersion into their business to discover all the processes, technologies, features, etc., that make it great. The goal is to reveal the differentiators that will matter to customers. A company may not think the high-quality bolts they use in the manufacturing of a product are anything to promote, but if they result in the greater durability and performance, then it matters. ǯ ϐ competition, it needs to be communicated to customers in a relatable way. That often means naming and branding the unique differentiator to establish an immediate connection with the customer. For example, when one hears the name EcoBoost, Ford comes to mind. They didn’t ǡ Ǧ ϐ Ǥ

also didn’t call it the E41825T and expect customers to connect with it. Instead, they developed a thriving sub-brand around the name EcoBoost.

A differentiator doesn’t have to be a tangible piece of technology or material. It could be a process used in the manufacturing of a product.

Maybe it goes through a rigorous testing process that ensures all the bugs are worked out before the product is introduced. While it may sound like standard operating procedure to a company, its customers want to hear about it. I want to know if a product I’m considering has been put through its paces by the manufacturer. It makes me feel more ϐ Ǥ like testing as a differentiator by naming it and then tying it to the brand by marketing it to the public.

Being called a best kept secret is certainly a compliment, but for most companies, it’s not where they want to be in the marketplace. To break out of that position takes a realization that your audience may not know about what makes your product special. It takes a deep look into every part of a company and discovering what it does that makes it stand out in the industry. Lastly, it takes ongoing, strategic branding and communication to capitalize on those differentiators and make a positive sales impact. It’s a secret worth telling.

He was a graduate of the Harvard Business School and was being groomed for “leadershipâ€? at Xerox. They wanted to give him some experience in –Š‡ Ď?‹‡Ž† „‡ˆ‘”‡ Â?‘˜‹Â?‰ Š‹Â? —’ ‹Â?–‘ –Š‡ ‡š‡…—–‹˜‡ •—‹–‡Ǥ Unfortunately, our new “sales managerâ€? had no real sales or leadership experience. His only hell week was the week he pledged his fraternity. He had no idea what his sales team was going through on the streets of Honolulu where IBM and Kodak had just entered the copier business and were eating us alive. Their salesforces were aggressive and hungry.

As our sales went down, our Ivy-League sales manager would close the door and scream at his sales team. His face turned bright red, as he demanded that we “Sell! Sell! Sell!� That is when the core differences between military leadership and corporate leadership dawned on me. I realized we all worked for Xerox, but we were not on the same team. He was Ivy-League royalty speaking to salespeople with college degrees from less prestigious schools. He thought he was better than us. He was rude, disrespectful and arrogant.

There are times when Marines yell and scream at each other.

The difference is that one Marine doesn’t think that he or she is better than other Marines. A Marine General will speak with same respect to a private as he would a fellow general. In the military, respect is far more important than rank.

Many on my sales team at Xerox were great sales professionals.

Unfortunately, they could not handle the disrespect from someone

who had never done what he was asking us to do. The best on the –‡ƒÂ? ™‡”‡ –Š‡ Ď?‹”•– –‘ ‰‘Ǥ ‘•‹Â?‰ –Š‡Â? ™ƒ• †‹•ƒ•–”‘—•Ǥ Few civilians realize that military organizations invest a lot of time and money in education. All Marines, regardless of rank, are always studying and training to be better leaders. That’s because if the leader is killed or wounded, the next leader must step up.

When I transitioned into the civilian world, I was surprised at how little studying we did. If we did have a mandatory training class, lots of men and women snuck out and went to the bar.

Today, I do my best to carry the leadership lessons learned from the Academy and the Marine Corps into my business. Fifty years later, I remain a section leader, a leader of peers — not subordinates.

I am the owner of the company, but I am not the boss. I encourage everyone to be the “boss� — to speak up, call out and lead. While all employees have a great deal of freedom, one thing that’s understood is that we don’t violate our company code of honor.

The Art of WORLD-RENOWNED painter Linda Hartough orld-renowned golf landscape painter Linda Hartough knew as a young child what her future was going to look like—at age six, she discovered her talent as an artist and never looked back. Raised in the picturesque countrysides of Wilmington, Delaware, and Louisville, Kentucky, Hartough enjoyed being around horses, drawing and painting them for hours on end. Her father being an avid golfer was what sparked her interest in the game, but especially it was the visual beauty of golf’s lush surroundings.

“My impression of golf was visual – where the ball should go, but didn’t,” says Hartough.

In 1984 Hartough, already known as a landscape painter, was contacted by Augusta National Golf Club to paint the famed 13th Hole, inaugurating what was to become her impressive career as a golf-landscape painter. She has enjoyed unparalleled global status, including receiving

Golf Digest’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Hartough’s paintings are included in the permanent collections of many legendary golf clubs, such as Augusta National and Pine Valley, as well as the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia, and the United States Golf Association Museum in Bernards Township, New Jersey. And her celebrated paintings are part of the private collections of Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus and an array of other golf legends. Last year Hartough was honored for her 25 years of painting the U.S. Open venues, as commissioned by the USGA. “I truly enjoy painting golf landscape,” Hartough says, “as it is some of the most beautiful and varied landscape in the world, combined with a deep historical sense of tradition that transcends time. The painting is a success when both elements emerge.”
