Facing Change with hope and heart Annual Report 2020

Caroline Center

by Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is a thing with feathers – That perches in the soul – And sings the tune without the words – And never stops – at all –

This past year, hope is what kept Caroline Center singing. Hope—fed by your generosity and love, nourished by your trust and faith in the work we do. For “Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen” (Hebrews 11:1). With the SSND charism to guide us, and your belief in the women we serve and the futures they deserve, we remain full of hope and of faith. It is because of your love and support that our “…heart is firm trusting in the Lord” (Psalms 112:7). With tremendous appreciation for the hope and heart you have gifted us, we humbly share the Caroline Center 2019-2020 Annual Report, Facing Change with Hope & Heart.

Our Mission Caroline Center educates unemployed and underemployed women in Baltimore for careers with potential for advancement. Inspired by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Caroline Center’s holistic approach empowers each woman to reach the fullness of her potential thus creating a future of hope for herself and her family.

From Our Board Chair & Executive Director

D

ear Friends of Caroline Center,

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you made possible for women in Baltimore during the past year through the education and career skills training that Caroline Center provides. The value of your generosity is inestimable; and, the positive and lasting results of your giving are so very clear to see. We are deeply grateful. Because you gave to the 2018-19 Annual Fund, 195 Caroline Center graduates were able to secure new employment positions with 80 local area employers as certified nursing assistants and certified pharmacy technicians. Seventeen graduates earned additional professional credentials last year, making them eligible for career promotions; and, more than 130 graduates are now actively involved in our Academic and Career Advancement program, as they seek to enter college, complete their degrees, or pursue advancement opportunities at work. Your giving to Caroline Center is an intentional and powerfully transformative act of love that changes individual lives, entire families, and the whole community. With your continued support, the quality of healthcare in Baltimore grows stronger and the employment picture in our city brightens. Thank you, as always, for your commitment to women and work. Thank you, too, for the countless ways you allow us to serve with joy and humility each day – ways that we hope will only add to the many blessings that Mother Caroline continues to bestow upon us.

A Generous Year of Giving Highlights The Change • On March 13, 2020, staff and students left the building for what we thought would be a two-week hiatus. At the end of two weeks, we returned to classes, but this time via Zoom! It was an unexpected transition—one we never imagined to be part of a Caroline Center education. But it did not seem to matter. Staff and students rose to the challenge by embracing the new medium, learning new skills, and facing forward with optimistic perseverance. • On May 21, 2020, Caroline Center hosted its inaugural curbside graduation—a drive-by experience elegantly captured by the Baltimore Times in an article published Online on June 5, 2020. • With the support of the Campbell, France-Merrick, and Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundations, Caroline Center completed a $317K capital improvement campaign. Moving forward, staff and students will enjoy classrooms equipped with interactive projectors; versatile fixtures that accommodate specific learning needs; and comfortable tables and chairs. Upgraded skills labs include new manikins, hospital beds, collapsible PT hoods, and an expanded hand washing station.

The Hope • We netted $53,800 through our annual fundraiser, Scrubs on a Mission, thanks to our many friends and benefactors who pledged their support despite the event being canceled as a precaution in this time of COVID-19. • The Notre Dame of Maryland University graciously donated time and talent to produce a new Caroline Center video, which can be viewed on our website and Facebook page. • In November 2020, Caroline Center received recognition from Bank of America in The Baltimore Sun as a program that creates meaningful career pathways for Baltimore City women.

The Heart • An annual $15,000 gift from a generous benefactor paved the way for Caroline Center’s Betty S. Williams Scholarship, our first recurring scholarship opportunity designed to support Caroline Center graduates pursuing their dream of becoming a nurse. • Through our pilot scholarship program (launched in 2018 with one-time seed funding from another generous donor), we provided direct scholarship support to four graduates working towards degrees in nursing. Additionally, two more women received scholarship support by way of our partnership with Judy Family Foundation. • Despite the incredible challenge that was last year, we celebrated 81 women—78% of all who enrolled in our training programs in the 2019-2020 year—who successfully completed training and earned certifications as nursing assistants or pharmacy technicians. We also applaud the 90 graduates who secured their first job post-graduation during a time when doing has become an unconceivably brave declaration of selflessness and commitment to our fellow humans.

Donor Profile:

HAR R I E T JOHNSON were the actual students as well as Kim Ward of the Baltimore County Police Department. Kim happened to be in a workshop together and I told her that I was interested in serving on a board with a connection to women and selfsufficiency. Kim Ward immediately spoke of the Caroline Center in such a warm way and stated for me to call and ask for Sister Pat. The rest is history! As a generous contributor to Caroline Center, what are your deepest hopes and dreams for what our program can accomplish – for women and their families; for the delivery of healthcare services in Baltimore; and, for the overall strength of our city’s economy?

Could you share with our readers how you first came to know about Caroline Center and what inspired you to connect with this particular SSND sponsored work as a volunteer? I first came to know the Caroline Center through numerous residents of Public Housing who shared information on how the Caroline Center was helping them on their path of selfsufficiency. In addition, my support services team spoke highly of the Caroline Center and how they were making referrals to the center on behalf of the residents. What inspired me to connected with the center

My deepest desire for the Caroline Center is to continue making a significant and positive difference in the lives of women. Through my lens of a public servant, I have witnessed families achieving goals of self-sufficiency and economic independence. Children see their mom/guardian thriving, and the self-esteem of the students/graduates increased. Family teamwork became the norm and dreams fulfilled through little steps. By continuing to provide outstanding training, the Caroline Center will provide more than qualified staffing for hospital, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other health care services. In retrospect, my deepest hopes and dreams is for the Caroline Center to be what it is right now! There are always more ideas and plans that can be made; however, the mission of the Caroline Center is valid, viable, valuable, and versatile to all.

We like to say that Caroline Center’s education and career skills training program, all made possible through the generosity of donors like yourselves, is “truly transformational.” How do you both, personally, regard this transformation?

The opportunities and benefits that a Caroline Center education provide are numerous – and they are both tangible and intangible. What would you say are the greatest benefits a Caroline Center education provides for trainees and graduates?

I have the greatest opportunity to work directly and indirectly with women that can use a “booster shot”. I have been invited to and attended a few half-way hurrahs and two graduations sponsored by the Caroline Center. Both types of events provide a way to see the transformation of many women from acting alone to being part of a team. From one end of the spectrum to triumph.

Greatest benefits are:

What does it mean it mean to you?

• Opportunities for leadership

It means the world to me to know that I am assisting in the uplifting of others. It is a ministry of mine, not just going through the motions, but truly embracing God’s purpose for me to fulfil.

• Safe Haven

How do you see our program accomplishing it? The program is already accomplishing this. Now is the time to show the success of the program by featuring outcomes that focus on life after the Caroline Center. Such as, how many graduates are now homeowners, how many graduates’ family members were inspired to set goals of self-sufficiency and economic independence, how many graduates obtain additional goals, and in some cases, how many times did a student have to overcome some hurdles pre/during/post Caroline Center. Looking at before and after pictures.

• Coaching/Case Management • Self-esteem boosters • New friendships • Teamwork • Support system above reproach

• Consistency • Highly qualified Caroline Center staff • Caroline Center administration that truly care for the well-being of all students/graduates • A Caroline Center board that is true to the mission, goals, and values of SSND. • Lastly, free quality training! If there were just one good reason you could share about why a person should give or why a person may want to connect to Caroline Center, what would it be? The Caroline Center transforms lives by serving others.

Thank You for your Support

Introducing Development Director

M ICHELLE PAYNE Association on regional and national accounts. Prior to that, I was an Area Executive Director for the American Diabetes Association’s Central Region. My territory was Kansas (to include Kansas City), Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and So. Dakota. I have also worked for Radio and Television (to include WBAL here in Baltimore) as Sales Manager for several years. I am a Wife, Mother of two adult children and two grandchildren under 4 years old, all of which are the loves of my life. We have made our home here in Annapolis, Maryland. Can You Tell Readers A Little About Yourself And What Inspired You To Come To Caroline Center? My love and compassion for women to thrive and become the best versions of themselves, particularly those women in under-served communities brings me to the Caroline Center. Professionally, I have served in nonprofit for several years and have a rich background in advertising sales and marketing. My most recent position was Corporate Development Officer for the American Diabetes Association’s National Headquarters in Arlington, Virgina. I managed the Mid-Atlantic region for the

In Serving Caroline Center As A Development Professional, What Aspects Of Your Work Are You Most Passionate About? Caroline Center is a mission close to my heart as my own daughter started in a similar program as a CNA. Caroline Center educates and empowers women to reach her full potential and hope for a brighter future. Our mission and business model are a joy to share with the Baltimore community and beyond. I am a development leader who is driven by my passion to encourage stakeholders and prospective donors to support a worthwhile cause they can truly get behind. One that breaths excellence. Caroline Center’s very foundation is built

on this excellence. I believe people buy from individuals they like and individuals they trust. The very fabric of who I am is based on the principles of accountability, integrity, collaboration, and excellence. It is a privilege to serve in the role as Development Director for Caroline Center. There Are Hundreds, If Not More, Wonderful Quotations About The Benefits Of Giving. What’s Your Favorite Quotation? Why? “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” Mother Teresa As I continue to grow in CHRIST the more, I realize that, in many cases, all we need in this world is more love. That to help others is of GOD. To show love for others and be willing to drop what we are doing and serve. Even if it is just spending a few minutes of our day talking with someone who needs it at that moment. Just being an angel here on earth. If You Could Share One Personal Promise To A Donor About What Her/His Giving To Caroline Center Will Accomplish, What Would That Promise Be? I am committed to informing and engaging our donors and to strengthen partnerships. Giving each the attention and care they deserve from both myself and the wonderful staff here at the Caroline Center. We are all in this together

for the greater good of the women of Caroline Center, giving each of them hope and a bright future. We Know You Have Plans And A Vision For Making 2020-2021 One Of The Most Meaningful And Rewarding Years For Contributors At Every Level To Get To Know Caroline Center Better. Could You Give Us A Little Preview Of Some Of The Opportunities You Might Have In Mind For People To Connect? We will be reaching out to potential stakeholders/donors and grantors through direct mail (where applicable), calling campaigns, and publishing information about Caroline Center in the local newspaper and making presentations to community groups and all media outlets. Using non-traditional means like web-based round table to educate the community on Caroline Center and particularly social networking sites like Linked In. The appropriate balance of traditional and web based methods are essential to our growth. Is There Anything Else You Would Like To Share With Readers? Stay tuned for an exciting 25th year here at Caroline Center! We promise to educate, engage, collaborate and elevate our Baltimore community and AWAKEN THE WORLD!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT “I actually think everybody should do this,” says Gordy Guay, who teaches anatomy and physiology to Caroline Center trainees studying to become pharmacy technicians. You have no idea what people go through unless you have intimate interaction with them. This has been a real eye opener. It’s very rewarding.” Gordy is a member of the dedicated corps of volunteers who turn up weekly to share their skills and knowledge with the women in our programs. He learned about Caroline Center from his wife Christine, who had found an advert in their church’s Sunday bulletin promoting volunteer opportunities with the organization. Having taught A&P, biology, genetics, and biochemistry for five years as a grad student, he found Caroline Center the perfect place to continue indulging his passion for teaching. “I love teaching…I want them to understand the big picture of how complicated things work.” Janice Bonner began volunteering at Caroline Center four years ago after receiving a call from Sr. Pat Murphy, who was the Associate Director of Caroline Center at the time.

Fun fact: After beginning as a volunteer with our PT program, Christine signed on as staff in 2017 as PT Program Coordinator and Instructor. “It wasn’t five minutes after I officially retired that I got a call from Sr. Pat…she said she’d heard I’d retired and asked if I was interested in teaching anatomy and physiology at Caroline Center. The rest is history!” During her 27-year stint teaching biology at Notre Dame of Maryland University, Janice had coordinated for her students a service-learning experience that involved them teaching Caroline Center trainees a nutrition lesson and then preparing a meal to share with them. Due to scheduling incongruities, the program ended after four years, but she quickly embraced the opportunity to revive her engagement with the women at Caroline Center. “The thing that amazes me is that with every session, the women are amazed that they have become a sisterhood. Watching it develop over time, seeing them help each other out, it’s a real joy. That’s what Caroline Center is all about,” she says. This sentiment is shared by the four women who volunteer their time to coach the certified nursing assistant trainees through their required skills. Sue Appling, Alice Brazier, Anita Langford, and Marilyn Winkelstein are

retired nurses who find that volunteering at Caroline Center provides them the opportunity to give back while still utilizing the skills of their craft. “For me, it was the perfect fit,” says Alice, who began volunteering in the CNA skills lab in April 2019. For Sue, who has volunteered with Caroline Center since 2015, the best part is seeing her students out in the hospitals when she visits a facility with her family. She enjoys getting to say hello and catch up with them, and she takes comfort in knowing that they are going to take good care of her loved one. “The Caroline Center changes the lives of the women it serves by providing a holistic education. As a volunteer I find it very rewarding to assist the women of the Caroline Center to develop skills leading to a career path in healthcare,” says Anita Langford who has been volunteering at Caroline Center since 2017. Marilyn began volunteering at Caroline Center in 2012 after hearing that Caroline Center was a “great facility” and looking it up online. She had been volunteering at various organizations since retiring in 2005 and was looking for something that would dovetail with her experience as a nurse and as a nursing educator. “This has been my best volunteering job!” she declares. “I love knowing I am part of a program that helps women build better lives… It’s a cooperative atmosphere. Everyone is working together to ensure their success. And that’s a very good thing.”
