Caroline Center is a steppingstone to a woman’s career, educational journey, and brighter future. The over 4,000 women who have walked through the doors of this sacred space, have taken the first step in their healthcare education, and become immersed with new information, hope, and determination. Post-graduation, they continue to invest in themselves by taking advantage of additional education opportunities. As our north star, the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) continue to guide our ministry and community. We hold true to their values and the belief that to empower a woman through education can create meaningful and lasting change. Your giving spirit makes a significant impact on a Caroline Center woman as she envisions a brighter future for herself and her family. Our Academic and Career Advancement (ACA) scholarships allow our graduates to continue their education beyond the 15-weeks and create future opportunities. We will continue to grow and nourish their educational pursuits with the help of our supporters, contributors, and readers like you. We are blessed to share with you Caroline Center’s Annual Report “Planting Seeds for Women’s Educational Growth”

It is with tremendous awe and gratitude that we reach out to share the good news about the fruits of your love and support for Caroline Center.
As we reflect on 2023, we celebrate our most recent graduates and the beginnings of their new careers. We also have an opportunity to reflect on the growing number of Caroline Center alumni who return, throughout their careers, to share their successes and seek support and encouragement for continuing their educational growth. Our Academic and Career Advancement Team stands ready to help with the Caroline Center Scholarship Program.
It gives us great pleasure to acknowledge the beauty and importance of three of 3 women’s amazing journeys here in the annual report. Your heartfelt generosity is second only to the passion and drive of the women themselves in these stories of their return to their alma mater as part of their quest for the “fertile soil ” needed to sow their seeds and produce abundant learning and growth.
This good news is called into focus by the Parable of the Sower: 3And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, 6but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. 7Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
Thanks to you, Caroline Center is filled with the good soil to continue producing the exciting outcomes you will read about in our Annual Report today; maybe a hundredfold with your continued blessings and introductions to others in the community who are similarly passionate about educating women.
If you are already a Caroline Center supporter, please consider marking your annual gift for Caroline Center Scholarship Programs. If you are a new or discerning supporter of Caroline Center, please, read the Parable of the Sower, one more time and come join us in the \”garden\” at Caroline Center where the soil is oh so good and the women inspire us daily to sow seeds for greater educational growth. Set up a time to bring your friends for morning coffee and a tour – coffee is on us!
God Bless you! Best wishes to you and your family for making all kinds of good things grow in 2024!
As we reflect on the past year, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible support that has fueled our mission and allowed us to make a meaningful impact. The Year of Giving has been a testament to the generosity of our community and the dedication of our team. Here are some of the highlights from this exceptional year:
Our annual gala, Scrubs on a Mission, reached new heights of success , thanks to the unwavering support of our sponsors, donors, board of trustees and staff. Together, we raised a record-breaking $75,183.35 in funds, enabling us to continue our mission and reach even more women of Baltimore.
We collaborated with local businesses to host monthly “friendraisers” throughout the year. These efforts raised $3,100 and strengthened our ties with community partners
Our online Giving Tuesday campaign resonated with a broader audience than ever before. Through creative storytelling and digital engagement, we raised $8,232.75.
We are thrilled to welcome 99 new donors who joined our cause and enriched our donor base. Their generosity reflects our mission’s resonance with a broader audience and ensures our sustainability for years to come.
The Year of Giving 2023 has been a testament to the power of collective action. Through fundraisers, scholarship support, and the addition of new donors, we have been able to make a transformative impact on the lives of individuals and our community.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our donors, volunteers, staff, and partners. We express our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your dedication, trust, and belief in our mission.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to expanding our reach, deepening our impact, and continuing to create a better future for all. Together, we will build a brighter tomorrow.
Caroline Center would like to honor our longtime friend and former colleague, the late Jackie Buedel. Jackie was instrumental in creating and supporting our Academic & Career Advancement Program (ACA) more than 10 years ago. Because of her commitment, our ACA scholarships program now provides graduates with the financial support they need to continue their educational journey with advanced certification and degrees to create upward mobility in their healthcare careers.
Jackie’s dedication to the Caroline Center mission and the women we serve was shown through her work and her legacy lives on through the ACA program she established.
By contributing to our ACA scholarship program, you will be helping women each year work towards advanced certifications and degrees for a better life for themselves and their families.
We have numerous scholarships to which you can donate that will contribute to our graduates’ educational futures including:
Moving Forward Scholarship
This is a new scholarship fund provided by anonymous donors. The scholarship will help Caroline Center graduates pay to attend a college-based nursing degree program in Maryland. It will give financial support for nursing school prerequisites and program courses. The support includes application and processing fees, tuition, fees, books, other study materials, and a stipend.
Betty Smith Williams Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to minimize financial barriers to nursing school for Baltimore City residents. Candidates who have graduated from Caroline Center and have a great performance history during their time in the program and in their job in the healthcare field. The scholarship is named after Betty Smith Williams the first African American nurse to graduate from the nursing school at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). She later became the first black person to teach at college or university level in California and a co-founder of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA).
Academic & Career Advancement Scholarship
This scholarship helps Caroline Center graduates pay to attend a college-based program or advanced certification program in the state of Maryland. It will give financial support for prerequisites and program courses. The support includes application and processing fees, tuition, fees, books, and other study materials.
How would you describe your experience when you were a student here at Caroline Center?
I would describe it as life changing. When I came to Caroline Center, I was new to the United States. I got everything I needed to live in the United States from Caroline Center. They taught me CNA skills and how to work with people, and ethics. How to be professional at work and all of the skills I need. One thing I’ll always remember is how we think about finances and income. They taught us how to use a credit card and what that was because where I’m from in Africa at the time you didn’t have credit cards. I literally got everything I needed from Caroline Center.
What made you continue your education after graduation?
II always wanted to help people. I can help people when I am a CNA, but I wanted more. I want to be the person that patients need for health education, advice, and really be there for them when they come to the hospital. I want to be that person for them, I’ve always wanted to have an impact on a person’s life. I recently graduated from Baltimore City Community College with my associate degree in nursing, and I will soon be getting my bachelor’s degree.
What was your experience like in college and how did Caroline Center support you during your associate degree?
It was unimaginable, they were always there for me. Not only about school but personally. While in school my daughter was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, and I was so stressed. I didn’t know how to cope with all the stress and school, but they were always there for me whenever I needed. What to do with her school, how to help her, they’re always there for me and gave me advice. They see my problem as theirs and they always try to find a solution for it. It’s not only educational but in life. It gives you the power and a reminder to keep pushing forward and Caroline Center will always be there for me. I would not be able to finish school if it wasn’t for the scholarship I received. Why is it important for people to donate towards scholarships to the Caroline Center?
It’s so important because at times especially as a woman you have a lot of things pulling you from home, work, and other things that make you feel you can’t do it. The Caroline Center is very good at what they do and with helping women go to school and give support and advice not even just school but home. I don’t have any words for the Caroline Center, if they were not in a place to help the women or myself. My life would be very, very, sad. I would be home, stressed, and no help, especially the support with my daughter. I really want people to donate to the Caroline Center Scholarship Fund so women like me can get the change to be able to go to school and get help they need. Words cannot describe how the center helps women’s lives and our community.
How was your experience here at Caroline Center?
My experience was a chance to improve my life for myself and my family and I feel it was a chance for me to reach my potential. One of my favorite moments was every morning we had prayer and motivation. The willingness of staff to help us, the structure, the professional classes, and counseling they had.
What made you want to continue your education after graduation?
I just want to have a better income and financial stability for my family. Also, some kind of educational knowledge I can rely on.
How has the scholarship provided by Caroline Center helped your goals?
They helped me with a lot of things I would not be able to afford, and the scholarship has helped me fully pay for school. I know if I didn’t have it, I would have a financial issue. I was able to work and go to school because of the scholarship I received. I hope that in five years because of it I will get my associates and be continuing on with more education. A better job and better income.
Why is it important for people to donate toward scholarships for the Caroline Center?
I would say when you donate, you’re not only giving a person a better life but their family and that is something that a person would appreciate the most. You are giving that person a huge gift.
What was your time like at Caroline Center?
My time at Caroline Center was so good! I felt a little nervous when I was meeting the other ladies, getting to know them, and making friends but everyone was so nice. It was educational and I can say it helped me along the way with jobs and getting to be a CNA. Also, with after school continuing on.
Currently I am attending Ultimate Health School for my LPN and after Caroline Center I went to CCBC for my PCT (Patient Care Technician)
What makes you passionate about the nursing field?
I always share how I used to take care of my dad. My dad was very near to my heart, and I helped before I started this nursing journey. Anytime I see an elderly person, a vulnerable person, I just see someone like my dad, like the way I’ll help my dad or mom.
How has having the Caroline Center Scholarship helped you?
It has helped me a very long way, I know that without it I would be struggling. With tuition being paid and other expenses I don’t think I would be able to go if not because I’d be trying to work just to make sure all my bills are paid so it has helped.
What would you say to someone who wants to donate to a Caroline Center Scholarship Fund?
Oh, I’ll tell the person it’s a good cause, you are helping someone achieve their goals, and is like investing in them so you’re not throwing your money away. There is so much happening around us sometimes, negative, and sometimes it’s because people didn’t have the right knowledge or get a chance to go to school. I’ll tell the person to go ahead and see how it is to help someone in our society, to help someone like me.
What is your goal once you graduate from the LPN program and your long-term goal?
I am going to go straight to my RN and better help people as a nurse.
Do you have anything else to add or anything else you’d like to share?
To share, I’ll just say thank you to Caroline Center for everything like from start to where I am now and even to finish because of the scholarship. I just said thank you because I didn’t know I was going to get it and didn’t have the money if I didn’t get it. I’m really grateful.
Thank you for helping to make this year’s Scrubs on a Mission a very successful annual fundraising event for Caroline Center! We are grateful for the commitment of our event sponsors, board of trustees, special events committee, and our many staff and community volunteers, who made the event so enjoyable! Thanks to your generous support, proceeds from Scrubs on a Mission 2023 combined with other event-related income, grossed over $93,000 for Caroline Center programming! Photo Credit: Sherri Neumann
