“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you…, plans to give you hope and a future.” ~ (Jeremiah 29:11) This past year, we delighted in reflecting on Caroline Center’s 25th anniversary and celebrating all those who laid the foundation for what we have become today. From the over 3,000 women who have walked through the doors of this sacred space, taking the first step in their new life journeys, to the staff, volunteers and board members who have unselfishly given of themselves, and most importantly, you who continue to support us through gifts of time, talent and treasure. With the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) as our ever-present NorthStar, we know that what the future holds for Caroline Center will be full of love, support and promise for the women of Baltimore.

It is with gratitude and appreciation as you join us in continued celebration of the past 25 years, and for being with us as we envision a bright and hopeful future, we share with you Caroline Center’s Annual Report: “Celebrating the Past, Envisioning the Future.”

Our Mission: Caroline Center educates underemployed and underemployed women in Baltimore for careers with potential for advancement. Inspired by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Caroline Center’s holistic approach empowers each woman to reach the fullness of her potential thus creating a future of hope for herself and her family.

From Our Board Chair & Executive Director Dear Friends of Caroline Center, We have indeed been living through unprecedented times; but what continues to give us hope as we look toward the future of Caroline Center is your unprecedented commitment to the women of Baltimore City.

In the Caroline Center tradition of uncompromised love and support, you - the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) community, our beloved donors, supporters, staff, volunteers, and Board of Trustees – are at the heart of our women’s success. We experience you with awe and reverence for the myriad and selfless ways you have cheered and encouraged the success of Caroline Center and our women for 25 years, and with grateful anticipation for the partnership and opportunity that lie ahead for all of us as we continue to celebrate our distinguished past and embracing our boundless future.

In the past two years, your faith and tenacity have been more central to the Caroline Center mission and vision than ever, along with that of the women and their families. Dramatic changes and formidable challenges brought about by pandemic, civil and political inequities and unrest have tested the mettle of Caroline Center women and their families, as well as the staff, volunteers and all our very generous and loyal funders and supporters. However, we are lifted daily by your bounteous love, engagement, loyalty, and energy. True to the SSND charism, the “oneness” between the Caroline Center and its supporters has never more palpable than it was in 2020 – 2021.

With God’s abundant blessings, the intercessions of Blessed Mother Theresa Gerhardinger and Mother Caroline through the SSND community and your generous, unwavering support in the most challenging of circumstances, Caroline Center graduated three cohorts of women in 2021 and welcomed a fourth. We are grateful that your many and diverse gifts enabled the staff and leadership to blaze new trails in programming, operations, and technology when we weren’t quite sure we could find a path forward.

Thanks to your love and support, Halfway Hurrahs, Closing Circles and Ceremonies were still celebrated, and board and committee meetings were held on schedule. The teamwork continued, unfettered by the difficulties outside the walls of Caroline Center, while our various stakeholders banded together to advance our strategic planning efforts. Our newest trustees were even welcomed to the Caroline Center family and oriented two months earlier, enabling them to jump in and support strategic planning work groups, new committee initiatives and broader organizational goals.

2021 was also the year that the rest of the world had a chance to learn what we already know as Caroline Center was voted Baltimore’s Best Non-Profit in a Baltimore Sun Reader’s Poll!

Even through success and progress, as well as the incredible potential of the women of Baltimore City, the needs have never been greater. Long-term, lasting impactful change will continue to take time. Yet, every day we witness the impact of your generosity and investments. We are well-positioned for the next 25 years because of the incredible faith and foresight of our donors and supports.

Your legacies will continue changing the futures of women and their families for generations to come.

A Generous Year of Giving Highlights On March 25, 2021, Caroline Center along with the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), students, staff, volunteers, and members of the Board of Trustees, began what is to be a year-long celebration of 25 years in service to the women of Baltimore City. The celebration began with a “Blessing of the Building” at the door of our sacred space – 900 Somerset Street - led by Sister Charmaine Krohe, SSND Provincial Leader, Mid-Atlantic Province.

2001 Upholstery Training program begins.

Even during the height of the COVID pandemic, Caroline Center sustained full operations, offering classes both virtually and in a hybrid manner, successfully graduating 68 women.

The foundation and government communities supported Caroline Center Covid response efforts through $40,000 in both gifts and grants. Funding supported PPE, equipment for virtual learning, and other technology, e.g., Chromebooks.

Caroline Center hosted its first-ever virtual fundraiser. Raising over $30,000, the intimate evening included a tour of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum highlighting prominent Maryland African American women in the field of healthcare.

Through the giving spirit of a generous benefactor, Caroline Center launched the inaugural Betty S. Williams Scholarship. Ms. Williams is the founder of the National Black Nurses Association. This $15,000 annual scholarship is available to eligible Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) graduates interested in pursuing a degree in nursing.

In support of our financial literacy and education programming, Caroline Center received $10,000 in funding from the Foundation for Financial Planning (FFP). FFPs funds were directed towards enhanced workshops and one-on-one financial coaching provided by pro-bono Certified Financial Planners (CFPs).

Mary Catherine Bunting fulfilled her generous commitment to match funds up to $500,000 in support of the Caroline Center endowment.

Caroline Center was honored to be named by the Baltimore Sun as Baltimore’s Best Non-Profit.

WMAR, in celebration of our 25th anniversary and in service to over 3,800 women in Baltimore City, featured Caroline Center both on air and on its website.

In commitment to learning and developing more as a whole team, staff recently participated in two Diversity & Equity Inclusion (DEI) training sessions with Kristen, Magni, Managing Partner, HyrUP. These training opportunities are important as we work to understand our own diversities and biases, align ourselves with the SSND mission to dismantle racism, and better support the women whom we serve.

Sr. Kathleen Feely Spotlight In 1994, you got the call to undertake a project in east Baltimore. What was the process in creating Caroline Center?

At the time, I was in Australia and it was a time difference. I got the invitation to do the work at 5 AM. I was coming home in maybe two or three months. So, I came back, accepted the invitation, and really started working with others for the building and needs for the program.

In terms of preparing, what were the steps to make Caroline Center come to a reality?

The very important thing is that the Institute of Notre Dame (IND) gave me office space. I had an office to work out of and Sr. Gentry, a wonderful sister who is now deceased, was very IND oriented. She was hired to assist me, looked up all these neighborhood organizations, and made appointments with the leaders. We would go to the groups and talk about our project and learn what they were doing in the area, which was helpful to us. She helped me pretty much everywhere for two years before it opened. I got so much good help from people. I got the architect - he did our gym at Notre Dame University - and was so great to work with. He was so knowledgeable but retired and went back actively to do this project. I knew that if I said to him, “This is what we want to do,” then he could draw the plans and show them to me.

I had such confidence that he understood the project. I knew he would do his best to make the most out of the small building. Caroline Center is not large, and we were trying to do a lot in a little space. That took very effective planning.

to do anything, and I had a little seed money from the community but did not have all the money. I came home from Australia and went to an outdoor luncheon. I stood there looking around. If you’ve had that experience – “Where should I sit?” I was just by myself, and I saw somebody at the table I knew. I went to that table, but I did not know I was sitting across from the state senator. We were at the table talking and somebody said to me, “Now that you’re back from Australia, what are you doing?” I said, “I’ll tell ya, I’m starting this whole new project, but it’s pretty daunting. It’s creating a job training center for women in East Baltimore.” He was sitting across the table from me, and when I finished telling the story and idea of the Center, he said the state had the money for the project and handed me his card to be in touch with him. I called and he took the project.

That was the Lord! That’s all I could say. I had no idea he was there. You know that divine intervention is the kind of thing where you know you’re put in the right place. That’s the important difference when you’re going to raise money.

If you can say you have a matching state grant, it’s the opening sentence that always gets people’s attention because you already have money - you’re just asking for the rest. It opened the door. Sr. Pat was a blessing, being the first person I had in mind to take on the program side of things. I knew all along that I did not know how to create a job-training program. But Sister Pat did.

How does It feel that this year marks the 25th anniversary of Caroline Center?

I feel so deeply that this is God’s work. I just feel it so deeply because it’s 25 years. There is a little slogan in some banks which I have always liked, “exceeding expectations,” and all I can say is that Caroline Center has exceeded every expectation I have.

When I was thinking about before the interview, it’s 100% more thorough and is it’s more long-lasting than I ever thought. It’s always had dedicated, inspired people running and assisting in it. It has changed more lives than I could ever imagine, especially that the program can do three sessions a year. A little place is changing things on a larger scale, especially with how many you think graduate every year. It’s made a big change in Baltimore, and it is so much more powerful than I ever expected. I’m so full of joy. I still get all the information and I know exactly what’s going on - I love it. It has been a blessed program from the beginning and everyone who has joined it has been a blessing.

What are your hopes for the years to come with Caroline Center?

I hope that all the leaders who follow will have a great deal of wisdom and trust in the Holy Spirit to lead. Sometimes I say I would like this to be replicated someplace else, but is that possible? Can you take something very full of tradition and hope and take it someplace else? I know we did it a while ago across the city at St. Agnes. If you have a deep belief that the spirit is the guiding center, you might see an opportunity that it could happen and happen well. It could happen with the same level of devotion, but it just isn’t so easy to do so. Looking ahead, I simply say, “Spirit of God leads this wonderful institution into its own special future.” I can’t see what that will be, but I’m so sure that if we keep the spirit of God strong with that staff, and in that building, it is God’s work and if there is a way, we can replicate it or do it in a larger sense, than I think that will be amazing. If there isn’t, we just continue to do better and better.

Sr. Patricia McLaughlin Spotlight How did it feel to get the call to direct a new School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) sponsored-work program?

Well, it was great. Sister Kathleen was the one who invited me. I think for me the most exciting thing was to know that I was coming back to where it all began for the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Sister Caroline walked these streets and Mother Teresa, so that was really a very special piece of coming to this program. I love starting new things. It was fun to re-imagine or imagine what we could do in this building and what this program could be. It was a wonderful experience.

I was so grateful to be asked to come. When I came on, it was more about really developing the curriculum, hiring of the staff, and getting us set up.

What was the process like preparing to open Caroline Center?

I started in August of 1996, and we opened toward the end of September. It was hiring some staff and then imagining, with the staff, what we wanted the program to look like and then sending them off to develop it. There was really no model for it. What we did was, I think, groundbreaking in terms of workforce development for women.

When we were first ready to set the date, the building was not ready. We had to go through inspections once the building was finished. The first couple of weeks, we had a wonderful relationship with Pastor Carl Pagan, the pastor of Urban Bible Fellowship in the neighborhood. He allowed us to use some rooms in the building attached to the church for classes. We had no computers, so we were teaching computers without computers. It really gave us a chance, I think,

to bond with the women, The first group and really get a sense of what we were about and to share that with them. In the end, it was good. Then eventually - on a bright September Monday - we walked down the street and started. That was the beginning.

Tell us about the first couple of years, what was that like?

The first couple of years we had our first programs. We were just doing GED and clerical. The theory was that at the time we thought that’s where the need was. We developed what we called, “Caroline Partners.” A board member and I went to all these businesses and banks and said, “We are training women for clerical positions; will you partner with us and agree to at least interview them when they’re ready for work?” The other piece of was, we knew there was a great need for high school diplomas and wanted to do that.

Our first venture into something new was when we were approached by some folks at Loyola College. They had a grant to provide the 90-hour Child Certification Certificate for women in the city to become daycare providers but needed a place to house the program and asked if we’d be interested. I thought, “Why not?” Let’s give it a try. Loyola provided the staff.

As time went on for clerical, many places were requiring a college or at least AA degree. We saw that really wasn’t going to get people jobs. We just couldn’t meet that.

Then we’ve heard rumbles of women talking about wanting to be nurses. I’ll never forget that day. One of my fondest memories, I said at a morning gathering, “Anyone who wants to be a nursing assistant meet me in 311,” a room at the center at lunchtime. At lunchtime, I couldn’t get in the door. Every woman in the building was in that room or fighting to get into the room. We said “OK,” this is where we’re going to go. So, we began the CNA program. It was childcare, then CNA and that’s when Upholstery came in.

We started at the basement, then turned that into a social enterprise. Eventually, we did a few other dibbles-dabbles. We had a guy teaching house painting for a while, so some women learned how to be house painters. They did a really good job, but the location was in Laurel and hard for those who did not have transportation. We did home repairs. Two retirees trained women how to rewire lamps - odds and ends with home repairs. Again, handy for them at home but it did not really lead to jobs. That has always been something I’ve loved about Caroline Center - we can be nimble if it does not work - we are not going to keep doing it.

Sr. Patricia McLaughlin Spotlight

We had a board member who was a pharmacist and said to me one day, “Have you ever thought about training pharmacy technicians?” That is when we took off with the pharmacy and really the health fields after that. We left childcare. Loyola ran out of money and could not hire teachers and because the wages were so low in daycare, there was not much chance for advancement at the time. Then we just started to focus on healthcare careers.

Why is Caroline Center’s mission important to Baltimore City?

Well, on the big scale, we provide the workforce for institutions in the city like hospitals, nursing homes, pharmacies.

That is a big benefit to the city. Then I think in terms of the women that we trained. They are building generational wealth or hoping to build generational wealth. When a woman graduates from Caroline Center, has a career, and moves ahead in that career, she is teaching her children all kinds of things about work in the world. She buys a house; it just keeps propagating and so we do that through workforce training. The women whom we graduate are great benefits to the city because they become taxpayers. They are building their wealth or becoming homeowners and just giving back to the city in wonderful ways.

How does it feel to know Caroline Center has been around for 25 years this year?

It is amazing and you know, I am so grateful for what happened when I was here and for the way Lynn, the staff, and the board have continued this mission. Continue to make it the great place that it has always been. I am just amazed, grateful, and thrilled.

What are some of your favorite memories of Caroline Center?

I have hundreds of them. Every first day. I love those first days, when the rooms packed with women who are just full of hopes and dreams. Every graduation, Halfway Hurrah, and Circle. They have provided wonderful memories. One of the things that I was reminded of is when we started Caroline Center West or Gibbons Commons as people know it. My biggest concern was, how can we replicate Caroline Center? What can we do to be sure that the intangibles here click over there? We hung up the mission statement, we took that picture of the logo, and tried to use the same colors, put the murals walls, and trained the staff. I will tell you the first Halfway Hurrah that I went to and heard that very first class talk about the staff and what Caroline Center meant to them, it was the same words that came out of the women on Somerset. I will never forget that moment. I thought, we did it.

When I was here for the last graduation and there were the women who spoke and the women who shared it at the circle - it is that same spirit that they have caught, and it is so gratifying to know that the work of the staff - it is the staff who have done that and have not lost that magic touch.

I remember all the anniversaries. On our 10th anniversary we had a big celebration at Villa Assumpta. Some of the women danced down the aisle and that was beautiful. One of them sang “You Raised Me Up.” On the 20th, we decided to put all our resources into creating Caroline Center Gibbons. We did not have a big celebration and just announced it. We said the women were more important than a big celebration. The fundraisers and the “friendraisers,” all the wonderful people that have supported us over the years. The board leadership and of course the staff have been just incredible.

What are your hopes for the years to come?

My hopes are that it continues to grow and flourish, to serve women and serve the community. I hope that the staff now retains that flexibility, and if something is not working just because it always was, does not mean it always has to be.

Whatever is best for the women and their needs is what is most important.

The History of Caroline Center September 1995 SSND Sponsored, George Vaeth Associates renovates building to make way for classrooms and an adult education program.

October 5, 1996 Caroline Center opens their doors on October 5th, Clerical Training Program and GED Started
