It’s hard to believe due to the number of highprofile projects and their already wellestablished brand that Nick and Amanda Megson have just recently celebrated their first year in business.

Although 2020 had many challenges for all sectors Abacus Flooring Solutions surpassed their anticipated yearly revenue and have seen month on month growth in all aspects of their company. Whether it’s the employment of staff in various areas of the country, a continuously growing pipeline of work and current plans to move into to a new warehouse and office space things have gone superbly in year one. This is the product of long hours, unmatched quality or work and many miles on the motorway.

Abacus currently have a major project taking place in Darlington, 7 completed jobs in Wales and have covered every corner of the UK working with multiple industry leading clients.

Nick and the team at Abacus have designed a resin floor screed made of a variety of recycled plastics and most notably, toilet seats. Zinc die casting alloys have high strength, excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, the best surface quality for decorative finishes, high fluidity, ultra thin wall capability and can be cast with low draft, while the zinc die casting process provides high casting productivity, long die life, low energy consumption, and net shape casting.

For example, the figure below shows the intricate geometry of a zinc die cast electronics housing. The design requirements for the housing were demanding and included a complex geometry with ribbed walls, through holes in two directions and multiple mounting and connector tabs, along with good thermal conductivity, EMI shielding, tight tolerances and thin wall construction, as well as part-to-part uniformity, and as always, low cost. The accuracy of zinc die casting allows the housing to be cast near net shape, thereby reducing secondary operations. Zinc alloy die casting was selected for its ability to meet all these design requirements cost effectively.

With e-commerce returns just as explosive as online shopping, many e-retailers are discovering their returns management processes aren’t efficient. Returns management is one of the most often overlooked processes of the warehouse. An unmanaged, uncontrolled returns process can put tremendous strain on a facility’s available space, labour and costs.

When returns are put in a corner waiting to be processed, that’s putting valuable revenue generating inventory aside. If processes are not properly managed and systems become overwhelmed, items will have to be sold at a discount to get them out of the system before eating into profits.

Returns are a significant cost and put an enormous impact on the bottom line. 2020 returns were estimated to cost retailers $550 billion. When it comes to returns, the top challenge facing retailers is cost containment. As retailers expand return policies to meet customer demands (free shipping and no restocking fees), their internal returns costs increase.

3D Printing & Digital Inventory Accelerating Satellite Manufacturing For manufacturing companies looking to revolutionise their responsiveness to customer spare parts demand, 3D printing opens up compelling opportunities. How to improve sustainability and energy consumption with robotics

Sustainability is the ability to develop and implement technologies that are self-sustaining, without damaging the environment or jeopardising the potential for future generation to meet their energy needs. In manufacturing, the adoption of robotics helps improve sustainability and energy consumption, thereby enhancing companies’ reputation while improving their competitiveness. Here Neil Ballinger, head of EMEA at automation parts supplier EU Automation, explains how robotics not only improves sustainability but also benefits business’ bottom line.

For example, robots don’t need to work in bright lighting; unlike human workforce, they also don’t require heating on the factory floor during the winter months, achieving considerable energy savings.

Besides, robots can work non-stop, and their high speed helps increase the production rate, thereby reducing standby time and avoid unnecessary waste of energy.

Additionally, as robots are programmed to work precisely, scrap or excess material during production processes can be reduced, thereby minimising not only energy but also material waste. For instance, in a car assembly line, a robot can accurately calculate how much paint is needed for a certain vehicle and then repeat the same process, reducing the material used and the amount of defective or unsuitable end products.

This directly benefits both the consumer and the environment,

because the number of items which end up in landfills or are returned after purchase will be decreased dramatically.

For products like vehicles, in which spare parts are needed for years after the manufacturing of the car is completed, robotics can considerably reduce costs in the long run. Many manufacturers are now transferring the production of such parts from mass production lines, which previously needed to be maintained only to be used infrequently for the large-scale manufacturing of a specific part, to a small number of robotics designed and programmed to manufacture parts only when needed. In this way, robotics helps eliminate the need for mass production, saving space, energy and material usage.

Automation demo helps manufacturers see clearer

Specialist offers trial demo of vision processing add-on to popular automation platform One year on from the product’s launch, automation expert Beckhoff UK is offering automation engineers and managers a free demo of its TwinCAT Vision software.

The add-on software, which builds on Beckhoff’s TwinCAT 3 open automation platform, allows configuration and programming of machine vision (MV) systems in the TwinCAT environment — eliminating the need for additional specialist software. The demo is available in the downloads section of the TwinCAT Vision page on the Beckhoff website, here.

TwinCAT Vision was released in the UK in summer 2020, giving engineers the ability to incorporate MV processes into their existing automation setup. MV cameras integrate into the software architecture using Beckhoff’s TF700x GigE Vision Connector, which makes the software compatible with a wide range of cameras and imaging technologies.

Using the familiar programming languages and configuration tools of the platform, vision systems can be configured, and image processing can be programmed and executed. This makes MV systems easier to manage, while also reducing latency and improving synchronisation with other systems by bringing MV into the same control environment as motion applications, robotics and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

“In its 2020 report, the World Manufacturing Foundation made repeated mention to the importance of intelligent MV in industrial settings,” said Stephen Hayes, managing director of Beckhoff UK. “Vision systems play an integral role in processes such as quality assurance. The report went as far as stating that ‘to reach the full potential of

[digitalisation] and Industry 4.0, manufacturers must embrace AI-powered solutions that finally close the quality control gap’, with direct reference to AI-enabled machine vision.

“The challenge with uptake so far has been partially rooted in the skills gap. The same report identified computer vision as one of the top skills sought by manufacturers, yet this specialist skillset presents a barrier to adoption. More manufacturers than ever are using MV systems, but our experience has shown that uptake would be greater if they had the capability to implement this at scale — that’s why TwinCAT Vision is an invaluable asset to manufacturers.

“TwinCAT Vision helps remove one of the barriers to MV adoption, by giving engineers the capability to control vision systems effectively with their existing skills and software tools. With the barrier removed it’s just a matter of setting up MV systems to work in harmony with other processes, which TwinCAT Vision also helps achieve with ease. This demo will help industrial businesses to realise that embracing MV is viable, practical and easier than ever before.”

Beckhoff has already supported numerous MV integrations using TwinCAT Vision, with applications ranging from production inspection for pharmaceutical quality control to rapid object detection in motion systems.
