Your legacy at Jesus

I loved my time at Jesus. I was brilliantly taught, made many lifelong friendships (including meeting my future wife!) and enjoyed the full breadth of College life. I feel the benefit I got from my time as an undergraduate far outstripped the fees I paid to be there. I hope my contribution will help the College to continue improving the experience it offers to Jesuans.

What do you want your legacy to be?

Jesus College has an exciting future, and it is an honour to invite you to be par t of it.

I am proud to be the Master of such an ambitious, kind and inspiring community. Our students balance academic pursuits with widely-renowned spor ting and musical endeavours, while Fellows and staf f ensure ever ything from world-class teaching to Formal Hall is delivered to the highest standard. Meanwhile, our alumni champion the College’s values, and are working to change the world for the better.

We have acquired a well-deser ved reputation for excellence, and this would not have been possible without the material suppor t given to College over the past five centuries. We are also a College that looks for ward, striving to develop, learn and grow – much like the generations of Jesuans whose lives have been shaped here.

Leaving a legacy at Jesus is your oppor tunity to suppor t this vision for the future. Your legacy here will help countless Jesuans in the years to come, enabling each of them to embrace life at Jesus and to unlock their potential.

This brochure contains all the information you may need when considering how you can leave your legacy at Jesus. Thank you, from the bottom of my hear t, for any suppor t you choose to give.

Fellowships

Vivian Cox (1934) maintained a lifelong passion for the subject he enjoyed at Jesus. A gift in his Will established a Fellowship in his name.

“My endowed Fellowship has allowed me to teach and direct studies in English at Jesus College for 15 years. Super visions and small-group teaching are a unique par t of ever y Cambridge student’s education. At Jesus College, this teaching makes our students critical and creative at the same time; it gives them intellectual agency; it allows them to hear and to foster their own voices, to challenge or thodoxies, to speak passionately and boldly about their experiences and ideas, to be formed as thinkers as they read, write and study together. Endowed Fellowships such as mine allow teachers to have even deeper and longer-lasting intellectual relationships with our students; it is a great privilege to hold one. ”

scholarships

World-renowned conductor and Honorar y Fellow Christopher Hogwood left a legacy gift that has funded 10 Jesuan PhD scholarships so far, creating a network of Hogwood alumni here and at the other institutions he suppor ted through his Will.

“Christopher Hogwood’s generosity has placed me in an enviable position from which to pursue a life of intellectual and creative connection. The value of the Hogwood Scholarship, which I can already see extending far beyond the terms of the funding, is ultimately immeasurable: true to its underlying spirit of ar tistic community and scholarly inquir y, it has enabled me to form enduring relationships with brilliant people I would other wise have never met.”

… student experience

Penny Woods’ remarkable residuar y legacy in memor y of her husband, Alan Woods (1967), perpetually endowed the post of Director of Music, meaning the College will always be able to attract accomplished candidates to the key position that safeguards the quality of music at Jesus.

“It is an honour and a privilege to ser ve as the Director of Music here at Jesus College – a position that is made possible by the generosity of Penny Woods’ legacy gift. I am for tunate to work with many talented and inquisitive students here, nur turing their individual creativity in an inspiring and intellectually challenging environment. Through Penny’s legacy and the ongoing suppor t of other loyal donors, we are able to provide a diverse programme of musical events each year, upholding music-making of all kinds at the hear t of the College community.”

… buildings and facilities

Gifts in Wills were imperative to the College’s purchase and redevelopment of West Cour t, with three leading legacy gifts from Richard Bawden (1947), Christopher (1940) and Marian Webb, and Walter (1936) and Barbara Bain. Valuable spaces for students, staf f and Fellows, the Bawden and Bain Rooms, and the Webb Librar y – named in their honour – are central to the College’s conference business, generating income to fur ther strengthen the College’s financial position.

Modest savings: the Littledale legacy

Since Jesus College received her legacy gift, Margaret Littledale’s “modest savings” have so far funded 37 bursaries. The Littledale Bursar y will exist at Jesus College in perpetuity, so she will always be remembered by the undergraduates like Deborah who benefit from the bursaries bearing her name. How I was going to fund my life as a student was a concern. If the bursary wasn’t available life would be very difficult. I wouldn’t eat as much. I wouldn’t go for as many academic or work experience opportunities that require me to travel. Without the security of my bursary I wouldn’t be able to freely pick accommodation that I feel suits me, because I wouldn’t be able to afford the rent. My bursary allows me to make choices I want to make, without having to panic about how much I’m spending.

Donations and endowment income are essential in allowing the College to achieve all that it does. This not only includes providing an outstanding education for our students, but also the day-to-day operational costs and substantial programme of capital refurbishment and redevelopment across the whole of the College’s estate. Putting it simply, a legacy benefits the College both now and in the future.

Your Legacy at Jesus 7

Since my wife and I have no children, it was to Jesus College that my thoughts turned with advancing years, and given the attachment to the College that I felt from the beginning it was obvious that Jesus would be a major beneficiary of my Will. This intention was only reinforced by the unstinting assistance I received from the College when I experienced difficulties midway through my time in Cambridge, and for that I am profoundly grateful. Through my legacy I wish to give something back to the College and help future generations of students to benefit from Cambridge life as I did.

Your Will is important

Making a lasting impact

Your Will lets you decide what legacy you leave.

It ensures that your money and assets go to the people and charities you care most about, and that your desires for the future are secured.

Once you have provided for your loved ones, leaving a charitable legacy in your Will gives you a meaningful oppor tunity: the chance to have a tangible impact on the causes that matter to you.

Studying at Jesus College has shaped the lives of so many Jesuans – remembering the College in your Will helps us safeguard these life-changing experiences for future generations.

Tax advantages

Giving through your Will is an af fordable way of suppor ting the charities of your choice, and can have positive implications for your tax position.

As a registered charity (1137462), a legacy gift to Jesus College is deducted from the net value of your Estate before Inheritance Tax is calculated, reducing your overall Inheritance Tax liability. Under current UK legislation, if you leave at least 10% of your net Estate to charity, the rate of Inheritance Tax on the remainder of your taxable Estate is reduced from 40% to 36%.

Please talk to a qualified professional, such as a solicitor, to discuss the potential tax implications for your circumstances.

Your generosity

Types of legacy

Your generosity is inspirational and we will always be grateful.

Your legacy at Jesus College can take one of several forms. Depending on your priorities, you can donate the residue of your Estate, a propor tion of the residue, or a specific sum of money.

If you wish to direct your legacy to a specific purpose within College, it is best to describe your preferences broadly, and make your gift subject to an expression of wish, rather than a binding obligation. Please discuss, in confidence, with the Development and Alumni Relations Of fice what you want your legacy to achieve, to ensure that the College is able to administer your gift as you intend.

Legacy gifts left ‘for general purposes ’ are par ticularly valuable, as they af ford the College the flexibility required to embrace the oppor tunities, and confront the challenges, of the future. Unrestricted legacies are usually added to the permanent capital of the College, meaning your gift will impact the lives of generations of Jesuans yet to come.

Your Will is understandably a personal matter, which you may decide to keep private. However, informing the College of your plans – for instance, by filling out the legacy pledge form enclosed in this brochure – is incredibly helpful, leaving us best placed to fulfil your wishes and, crucially, express our gratitude.

10 Recognition

Our gratitude

The 1496 Society

To thank you for your legacy gift, you will be warmly invited to become a member of the 1496 Society. Named after the year when the College was established, the Society exists to recognise and celebrate the many donors who have told us they are suppor ting the future of Jesus College with a gift in their Will. It would be an honour to welcome you to join this caring community.

Benefits of 1496 Society membership include:

A thank you letter from the Master

A special membership pin

Invitations to the annual 1496 Society Lunch, for those who have pledged to leave a legacy at Jesus

Invitations to the Donors’ Garden Par ty ever y year

Recognition in the Donors’ Repor t (respecting anonymity if desired)

The chance to rub shoulders at Jesus with others of ver y dif ferent backgrounds was a novel and valuable learning experience in itself.

Meritocracy in education is an impor tant principle and I hope my legacy pledge will enable others to gain maximum benefit and enjoyment from their time at the College.
