ABOUT THE COVER For many years, Bill DeOre ’65 has produced the artwork for the Jesuit Dallas athletic programs. An award-winning and nationallysyndicated editorial cartoonist for The Dallas Morning News for 34 years, DeOre is a member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. DeOre has been an active member of the alumni community and currently sits on the Jesuit Dallas Museum Board of Trustees.

ABOUT JESUIT DALLAS

Founded in 1942, Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas is a Catholic, private, independent, all-boys high school. Following the 500 year-old Jesuit tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Jesuit Dallas strives to form young men into leaders who are open to growth, intellectually competent, committed to working for justice, religious, loving, and physically fit. Currently, Jesuit enrolls over 1,100 boys from 170 different middle schools.

Admission to Jesuit Dallas is open to qualified young men of all faiths and denominations, without regard to race or national origin.

Prospective students are chosen by an admissions committee on the basis of past school performance, academic and personal recommendations, a competitive entrance examination, a personal interview, and demonstrated promise of future development.

Additional consideration is given to members of the Roman Catholic Church, sons and brothers of Jesuit Dallas alumni, brothers of current students, and students of ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic diversity.

In athletics, Jesuit Dallas has claimed 121 team championships dating back to 1954. Most of the titles were won as members of the Texas Christian Interscholastic League (TCIL), a precursor to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) of which Jesuit was a member until 2000. In 2003, Jesuit Dallas, along with Strake Jesuit (Houston), became the first private schools to be admitted to the University Interscholastic League (UIL), which serves as the governing body for Texas high school athletics. Since joining the UIL, Jesuit has captured 69 district championships.

In 2010, the Jesuit Dallas soccer team became the first private school team in the history of the UIL to capture a state championship.

The Ranger baseball team captured its first UIL state title in 2016 and soccer added a second UIL crown in 2017. Jesuit rugby won Texas Rugby Union championships in 2001 and 2010, while the lacrosse program won back-to-back Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) titles in 2016 and 2017. The crew program routinely ranks as one of the strongest in the country, and has qualified for the USRowing Youth National Championships nine times since 2010.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends and Fans, Welcome to Jesuit Dallas and the 2021 lacrosse season. We began this year at Jesuit with the pledge to maintain a continuity of community, and despite a global health emergency that has impacted our lives in so many ways, we are blessed that our students have been afforded the opportunity to participate in one of our school’s greatest traditions – the great game of lacrosse!

While the spiritual and academic formation of our students take priority, as Jesuit educators we place strong value on the formational life lessons learned on the playing fields, in the rehearsal halls, and as members of various clubs, teams, and organizations. Although the experience this year will be different for our participants – and fans, we anticipate the upcoming year to be another full of great potential for our young men to grow, excel, and benefit from the rigors, challenges, and joys of a competitive schedule.

Thank you to our parents and benefactors, whose generosity of time, talent, and treasure enables our students to enjoy great facilities and programs that offer the finest environment for developing their talents. I would also like to thank our alumni, who continue to be a great source of inspiration and support for their alma mater. I am filled with gratitude and pride by the opportunity that our devoted community affords our current and future student-athletes.

HEAD COACH CHRIS SURRAN Entering his 14th season coaching the Rangers, Surran returns to the Jesuit Dallas sideline after leading the Rangers to Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) State Championships in 2016 and 2017. Coach Surran owns a 194-60 record as the head coach at Jesuit and has anchored a resurgence of the Ranger lacrosse program.

Last season, Jesuit Dallas finished a shortened season undefeated, earning a 7-0 record prior to the shutdown of the 2019-20 academic year. The Rangers finished the season as the top-ranked team in the Inside Lacrosse Southeast region, won all seven games at Postell Stadium, and picked up an electric, 11-10, double overtime win over ESD in their penultimate game of the year.

Jesuit has qualified for a state semifinal berth in eight of the last 10 full seasons, earning THSLL State Championship berths in 2011 and 2014 prior to winning titles in 2016 and 2017. Jesuit captured its first title in program history on May 15, 2016 with a 9-4 win over Highland Park. The Rangers then secured its second state title on May 14, 2017 with a 9-8 win over ESD.

In his first season at the helm, Surran led a team that went 2-9 the previous year to a 16-4 mark to earn 2007 Dallas Morning News Lacrosse Coach of the Year plaudits. Surran also earned the Jesuit Dallas Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading the Rangers to a 16-2 season. In total, Surran has posted double-digit wins in all but one of his 13 full seasons at Jesuit. Surran’s impact on the program is profound; currently 19 former Rangers are competing in the collegiate ranks.

Prior to arriving at Jesuit in 2006, Surran was the head lacrosse coach at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island for three seasons. In addition, Surran is the founder and president of Iron Horse Lacrosse, the Dallas Deuces Lacrosse Organization, and has served on the board for Bridge Lacrosse Dallas, a non-profit organization focused on bringing lacrosse to traditionally underserved areas across the Metroplex.

An All-American lacrosse star at Syracuse University, Surran was a member of the Orange’s 1993 NCAA National Championship team, played in two title games and participated in the NCAA Final Four on three occasions, additionally playing in the prestigious North-South All-Star Game during his collegiate career. Surran currently ranks ninth in Syracuse history with 476 career saves.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Surran earned a Juris Doctorate from Syracuse Law School, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. Chris practiced law at the Dallas office of Jenkens and Gilchrist until 2006, when he opened his own boutique law firm focusing on commercial real estate.

COACHING & SUPPORT STAFF ANTHONY SHERMAN ’99 • ASSISTANT COACH Sherman enters his 14th year coaching at his alma mater, serving as assistant for the varsity squad. A 1999 graduate of Jesuit Dallas, Sherman played lacrosse for the Rangers before attending the University of Texas at Austin, where he played two seasons for the Longhorns’ club lacrosse team. After graduating from Texas, Sherman played with the Big D Lacrosse Club in Dallas, and began his coaching career with the Dallas Deuces and Iron Horse Lacrosse before joining the Rangers in 2008.

BRANDON BANISTER • ASSISTANT COACH Banister enters his eighth season with the Jesuit Dallas lacrosse program, where he serves as an assistant on both the junior varsity and varsity roster, specializing in mentoring the goalkeepers. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Banister was a senior captain of the Mean Green’s club lacrosse team and, following graduation, began coaching with the Dallas Deuces Lacrosse Club, an organization he has been with for 12 years. Banister is also an assistant coach for Iron Horse lacrosse, a position which followed a four-year stint as a high school referee. Banister’s son, Christian Carson-Banister ’13, was a United States Interscholastic Lacrosse Association (USILA) Third Team All-American and played professional lacrosse for the Connecticut Hammerheads and Dallas Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse (MLL).

CARL SPROCK • ASSISTANT COACH Bringing over 15 years of coaching experience to Jesuit, Sprock has been a member of four state championship programs during a career that has spanned high school programs in Ohio and Texas. The 2014 THSLL North District Assistant Coach of the Year, Sprock was born in southwestern Pennsylvania, but relocated to Texas where he was a three-time football letterman at the University of North Texas.

Sprock has coached in the Metroplex for eight years, and has coached teams to six total THSLL State Semifinal berths. Coach Sprock brings energy and passion every day and enjoys working with the student athletes to improve their basic fundamental skills both on and off the field.

NATE LEWNES • ASSISTANT COACH Lewnes enters his second year on the Jesuit Dallas coaching staff following a stellar collegiate and professional career. Lewnes graduated from UMBC in 2015 after concluding his four-year career with 145 points on 119 goals and 26 assists. Lewnes’ 2016 season earned the vaunted attacker All-American honors as Lewnes finished the season as the national leader in scoring average with 3.91 goals per game. After graduating, Lewnes has played professionally in Major League Lacrosse, taking the field for the Chesapeake Bayhawks, Ohio Machine, Dallas Rattlers and Connecticut Hammerheads. Lewnes will mentor the Ranger attack and offense during his second full season on the sidelines.

HANK LIKES ’14 • CLASS B HEAD COACH A former Jesuit Dallas lacrosse player, Likes enters his fourth year on the Jesuit Dallas coaching staff.

Likes was named Jesuit’s team captain during his senior season and was a THSLL all-district pick in 2013 at long stick midfield before taking his talents to Lindenwood University. Likes has been a member of the Iron Horse coaching staff since May 2015, and enters his second season as the team’s Class B head coach.

TED HOVIVIAN • JUNIOR VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Hovivian enters his third season on the Jesuit Dallas lacrosse coaching staff, and also serves as the team’s statistician. Hovivian was a coach for the Franklin Youth Lacrosse Association (Mass.), before joining the Allen Sports Association upon arriving in Dallas in 2010. Hovivian has been a member of the Allen Lacrosse Board since 2012, serving as president from 2014-16, a time period in which Allen’s high school program qualified for the playoffs and the 5th and 6th grade teams won North Texas Youth Lacrosse Championships. Hovivian and his wife, Meredith, are proud parents of former Ranger studentathletes Teddy Hovivian ’17, Tommy Hovivian ’20, Tess UA ’23 and Toby.

COACHING & SUPPORT STAFF KYLE MASSIMILIAN • ASSISTANT COACH Massimilian enters his first season as a position coach at Jesuit Dallas, where he mentors the Rangers’ face-off specialists. A four-year letterwinner at Highland Park, Massimilian was a 2015 THSLL State Champion, two-time all-district selection and was named all-state in 2017. After concluding his Highland Park career with a 75 percent win rate at the face-off “x”, Massimilian played at Harvard, where he was a three-year member of the Crimson lacrosse program and recorded 67 face-off wins his sophomore year.

MATTHEW WARD • ASSISTANT COACH Coach Ward is a native of Michigan where he grew up playing lacrosse, hockey and football. While attending Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania, Coach Ward played four years on the lacrosse team with an overall record of 56-6 and a NCAA DII National Championship Title in 2011. Coach Ward graduated from Mercyhurst with a degree in applied intelligence studies and a minor in Russian studies.

In June 2019 Coach Ward was honored, along with the 2011 National championship team, by being inducted into the Mercyhurst Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to joining the Rangers, Coach Ward served as the head lacrosse coach for Plano H.S. from 2018-20, with the 2019 campaign ending as the second winningest season in program history. Prior to Plano, Coach Ward spent time with McKinney lacrosse and Parish Espiscopal. Coach Ward is also a current assistant coach for Iron Horse Lacrosse.

SEAN RILLEY ’16 • ASSISTANT COACH Rilley returns to Jesuit Dallas after graduating from Fordham University in 2020. A former Ranger standout, Rilley was a member of the first state championship team in program history, earning honorable mention plaudits in 2016. Currently, Rilley serves as a member of the Alumni Service Corps at Jesuit Dallas, a volunteer opportunity available to Jesuit Dallas graduates to devote a year of their lives in service and thanksgiving for their Jesuit education. It is a unique opportunity for participants to give back to their alma mater during a year between college and a career or graduate school. Participants in the program tutor, participate in retreats and liturgies, help with campus ministry, community service and assist with extracurricular activities.

RICK MARTIN • HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER Beginning his 23rd year at Jesuit, Martin is a board-certified member of the NATA, a Licensed Athletic Trainer in the state of Texas and an American Heart Association BLS instructor. A Central Connecticut State master’s of science degree recipient, Martin has worked in the clinical setting and at the collegiate level with Yale University.

Martin served as a secondary level athletic trainer in Connecticut, New York and Texas prior to arriving at Jesuit. Martin, his wife Jane, and twin sons Andrew and Garrett Martin ’12 are strong supporters of Jesuit Dallas athletics.

GIULIANO SANCHEZ • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE Sanchez will enter his third year at Jesuit Dallas, and his second as the director of athletic performance.

Joining the staff as the assistant director of athletic performance in 2018, Sanchez served as an intern for the Michigan State strength and conditioning department after stops at Colorado Mesa University, Muir Orthopedic Specialists and the University of Denver. Sanchez graduated from Louisiana State University with a master’s degree in kinesiology with a focus in exercise physiology.

Sanchez earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a focus in fitness and health promotion from Colorado Mesa University in 2014. A lacrosse player at Colorado Mesa University, Sanchez was a twotime team captain and All-Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association team selection. Sanchez lives in Dallas with his wife Natalie and daughter Gemma.

LACROSSE CLASS OF 2021 16 • MASON CHANDLER • SHORT-STICK Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? A football coach in the second grade, he was also the lacrosse coach and thought I would be good.

I am best known by my teammates for: My high spirits.

I love the game of lacrosse because: The intensity of running down the field and making split-second decisions.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Beating ESD in overtime my sophomore year after we played over two days because of a rain delay.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

Being with a brotherhood of friends that will stick with you and motivate you.

28 • ALEX CHEN • DEFENSE Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? Realizing that my soccer career was over at the ripe old age of eight, my father encouraged me to pick up lacrosse. He grew up in Maryland and although he never played formally, it was the pickup sport when hanging out with his friends.

I am best known by my teammates for: Having the best hair on the team.

I love the game of lacrosse because: It brings me great joy; the sport, the brotherhood and the competition. There’s no other sport like it.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Beating ESD in the rain in double overtime last year with a great student section cheering us on.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

Being able to spend a couple hours each day with my best friends, playing the sport we love for one of the greatest coaches to ever play and coach the game.

17 • BLAKE DICKEY • SHORT-STICK Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? I grew up watching University of North Carolina lacrosse, was a huge fan of the sport and wanted to play.

I am best known by my teammates for: Getting injured.

I love the game of lacrosse because: It is a team sport and I enjoy playing with my closest friends.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Beating ESD in double overtime.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

It instills the mindset to work hard, be disciplined and play together as a team.

9 • TILT FERNANDES • MIDFIELD Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? The kids a grade above me in the third grade that were practicing at my middle school.

I am best known by my teammates for: Being very competitive in practice.

I love the game of lacrosse because: I love getting to compete in a sport that involves different hints of every other sport in a team setting.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Beating ESD in overtime.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

Helping me grow up through balancing different aspects of my life, including: making close friends, being a good student and having the ability to play my favorite sport at the same time.

LACROSSE CLASS OF 2021 44 • TRISTAN HASSELL • DEFENSE Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? I watched my brother play lacrosse, so that encouraged me to play. After I started to enjoy the game, I liked to compete against him and get better.

I am best known by my teammates for: Having a great shoe game.

I love the game of lacrosse because: The competive nature of the sport. I also love contributing to a team of hardworking and dedicated guys.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Getting to beat ESD in double overtime before our season was canceled last year.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

Playing for Jesuit Dallas lacrosse is more about the practices than the games.

To me, it means making the people around me better and holding myself to a high standard for the benefit of the team.

35 • MATTHEW ISBELL • LONG-STICK MIDFIELD Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? My best friend in second grade signed up and convinced me to play with him.

I am best known by my teammates for: My sense of humor.

I love the game of lacrosse because: The lifelong friends and memories that I have made. My friends and memories playing lacrosse are some that I will never forget.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: The team trips we took on the bus.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

To me, playing Jesuit lacrosse means working hard to push yourself to your highest potential.

7 • HUDSON JOHNSTON • MIDFIELD Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? My brother played when I was younger and loved it.

I am best known by my teammates for: Being the only one of our group to join sophomore year.

I love the game of lacrosse because: It toughens you up like football, but it doesn’t require you to risk as much injury.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Watching Mac’s game-winner against ESD. What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

It’s the best place in Texas to develop as a player and learn to love the game.

12 • CONNOR LEGG • ATTACK Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? My dad. He taught me how to play from a young age and encouraged me to keep getting better. It quickly became my favorite sport and he still motivates me to help me get better everyday.

I am best known by my teammates for: My toughness. I have had three leg injuries and I play my absolute hardest regardless. I play through hard hits and use my physicality to my advantage.

I love the game of lacrosse because: I love the creativity and teamwork the game has that makes scoring each goal rewarding and fun.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Going to The Woodlands, winning a very tough and emotional game, then celebrating afterwards on the bus with my teammates.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

It is a committment to being the best. We have to work every single day together to become the best players that we can, and therefore become the best team that we can be.

LACROSSE CLASS OF 2021 22 • CURRAN ROSE • ATTACK Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? I picked the sport up on my own. I wanted to try it out but around eighth grade, Coach Surran inspired me to put more effort into my game.

I am best known by my teammates for: Strong stick skills and being a good friend.

I love the game of lacrosse because: It gives me an outlet to relieve stress and it fuels my competitive spirit.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Beating ESD my junior year and being so confident in my teammates. I knew we were going to win even though we were down a majority of the game.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

It’s the hardest sport at Jesuit and prepares me for the real world. It’s your responsibility to get better, and if you don’t take advantage of that, then you reap what you sow.

3 • HENRY SUAREZ • MIDFIELD • FACE-OFF Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? It was a combination of friends and my big brother. Lacrosse was a popular sport in my community, and it looked like a fun sport to try. Also, my brother playing definitely influenced me to play.

I am best known by my teammates for: My toughness and spin moves.

I love the game of lacrosse because: It has allowed me to grow as a person in a way that I believe will help in life.

Lacrosse allowed me to become a better leader, to be persistent in reaching my goals and to utilize my competitive drive both on the field and in the classroom.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Beating ESD in double overtime last season.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

Fulfilling a goal of mine to wear the Jesuit jersey and represent all the great things about the school. It also means knowing we are consistently one of the top teams in the state and having the privilege to be coached by Coach Surran.

16 • SAM TEACHOUT • MIDFIELD Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? I was inspired to play by my friends who started to play in third grade.

I am best known by my teammates for: Being tall and shooting the ball really hard.

I love the game of lacrosse because: It is fast paced, physical, and I get to play it everyday with my friends.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: Beating ESD in double overtime last season.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

Putting forth maximum effort into everything you do and striving to be your best everyday.

19 • CAIDEN VLASIMSKY • MIDFIELD Who were you inspired to play lacrosse by? Why? I was inspired to play when I saw people beating each other with metal poles. I wanted to do that.

I am best known by my teammates for: Keeping my duffy with me at all times.

I love the game of lacrosse because: It has given me a group of friends over the last four years that are like a family.

I also get to hit people with a stick.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: When I forgot sweatpants on a cold day of practice when we were asked to bring them. I told a senior teammate that I couldn’t go get them because I didn’t have a driver’s license. He told me to age quicker and figure it out.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

It is a place to grow from a boy to a man both physically and in character.

I am best known by my teammates for: My hardworking and positive attitude.

I love the game of lacrosse because: Being a teammate and knowing that together, with the hard work and values learned through lacrosse, we can achieve anything that we work for.

My favorite lacrosse memory is: The overtime win in the rain against ESD last year.

What does playing Jesuit Dallas lacrosse mean to you?

The team and brotherhood we create. Lacrosse has taught me life lessons, hard work and patience which will translate positively off the field.
