dear friends of Jesuit High School,

T

he new year. 2018. Can you believe it!

I don’t know about you, but I was just getting used to writing 2017 and now have to force myself to recall the year. Every year seems to be more jam-packed with events and activities and the more jam-packed, the faster the year flies by. As we turn the page on this past year and before we get too caught up in the new one, it is appropriate to reflect and take stock.

Now, I am not saying that we are perfect.

Certainly, there are other schools that inspire their students to live exemplary lives. What I can say with great confidence is that if you search you will not find a school that does it better than we do, year after year, student after student. Our success is no accident. The results are produced by a culture and a curriculum designed not just to fill the mind but to fill and change the heart and the soul.

I have had the privilege of devoting my entire career to Catholic education—from teacher, to principal to president. From grammar school to high school, in the Bay area and now in Sacramento, and I have to say—there is something very special about this place! As I reflect on it, I believe that JHS stands apart because of two things—Jesuit’s insistence on excellence and its unwavering commitment to challenge an adolescent to measure his worth, not by the wealth he acquires or position he achieves, but by the love and service he shares with others.

There is always room for improvement and just as we challenge our students, this year we will continue to challenge our Ignatian educators to strive for excellence and to treasure and to make the best use of our time with the precious gift you have entrusted to our care—your sons.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time this year and look forward to a “changing of the guard” when Father McGarry, S.J., returns to us this summer. What a wonderful future is in store for Jesuit and this community!

Jesuit’s laser focus on these two goals challenges our boys at the time in their lives when they are the most self-conscious—when they are Lorraine W. Paul the most hesitant to be different—when all President they want is to fit in and not stand out from the crowd. As educators and parents, we know how difficult this time can be in a boy’s life.

But, here, we embrace the challenge and strive to push each student towards excellence with the purposeful and constant reminder that by striving for excellence in all things, he will reach his goals and will develop the skills he will need to serve others well.

iving your time, talent and treasure is a saying you hear often. This past year those words were put into action by John Susac (Anthony ‘21), Nick Susac ‘80 (Andrew ‘09, Matthew ‘10, Daniel ‘20), Dave Williams (Luke ‘20) and Phil Balestreri (Samuel ‘20). Their friendship, which began as classmates at St. Ignatius Elementary School, has continued as they married and had their own children.

Last Spring, after the huge rains and floods wreaked havoc on Jesuit’s baseball fields, John Susac was discussing with his business partner, Dave Williams, the ways they could help with improvements. John felt that they could do more than just fix what the storms had destroyed.

During a conversation with legendary Varsity Baseball Coach Joe Potulny ‘76, John asked “what is your wish list for the fields?” Joe responded, and that began a grassroots effort fondly known as the Field of Dreams project.

Recognizing that it is a once in a lifetime occurrence when a group of people come together with the expertise and shared passion to take on a project of this magnitude, John also reached out to his brother Nick and childhood friend Phil Balestreri.

Since this was a project for which the school had not budgeted, John launched fundraising efforts, reaching out to former players and Jesuit alumni and parents. Working with Marshall Sperbeck, Vice President of Development, more than $200,000 in cash and gift-in-kind donations have been raised.

On August 18, 2017, began a grueling construction schedule to beat the rains, a schedule that can only be described as a labor of love. Dave Williams became the day-to-day field foreman, overseeing construction. As their enthusiasm for the project grew, so did their ideas: adding astro-turf, raised fan seating and covered dug outs, with a professional ball park field became their dream and reality. Of course, a project of this scope is filled with challenges, especially since the labor was donated by those already working full-time jobs. Coordinating schedules was complex, but with the support of Board of Trustees Facilities Committee Chair Dave Higgins ‘78 and Jesuit’s Plant Manager Willy Park, the project continued to flourish.

Calling in favors from other Jesuit alums and parents, baseball fans and friends, crews worked seven days a week to deliver what John Susac calls a “Cadillac field on a Ford budget.” Dale Piwinski (Chris ‘09) donated all of the Basolite bricks, Robbie Geremia ‘74 ( Jeff ’00, Brian ‘02) provided the concrete pump and finish work, Phillip Martin donated all of the heavy equipment, and Greg Aguilera (brother Matt ‘84) provided construction labor.

As we did a walk through with Head Coach Joe Potulny ‘76 and Athletic Director Greg Harcos ‘89, they shared “the hard work of so many has created quite a buzz and a sense of pride in the baseball program. It is fitting that the project finished during the Christmas season, as it is a real present to the school. From day one everyone working on the project has been meticulous in making sure everything is right. Looking at it now - they nailed it. What a beautiful facility.”

Jesuit High School is very grateful to John, Nick, Dave and Phil for their vision, don’t-give- up attitude and generosity of time, talent and treasure that made this dream a reality! Truly “Men for Others,” their legacy will be enjoyed by generations of Marauders to come. Please join us for our first home game on March 21 as the Marauders host Del Oro. Play ball!

A MILESTONE

CAMPAIGN A

notable school does not just appear. It is brought into being by great desires. It is built and grows through the hard work of exceptional faculty, staff and coaches, is invigorated by its students, and nourished by the support of alumni, parents and friends.

Commissioned by the Board of Trustees in 2013, the Milestone Campaign coincided with our 50th Anniversary celebration, and was launched to assure Jesuit’s future as a visionary institution that serves its community well. This campaign included renovation of the Hanson McClain Advisors Stadium, creation of state-of-the-art Science Learning Labs and Robotics Workshop, repurposing the King Library into an Information and Technology Commons, and growing our Jesuit Tuition Assistance Endowment.

he Jesuit High School Board of Trustees, Administration and Faculty and Staff, are honored to partner with parents in the great experience of preparing their sons for their future. In the Spirit of St. Ignatius, we are all committed to keeping a Jesuit High School education as affordable as possible and intentionally choose not to charge the full-cost of providing an exceptional Jesuit education for our students. We all work together to support a subsidized tuition model and focus on controlling inflation costs for our families.

With education costs continuing to escalate year after year, the Jesuit High School Annual Fund was established to offset the actual cost of a Jesuit education. Tax-deductible gifts to the Annul Fund help to cover this shortfall in meeting the operating costs of the school each year, including curriculum improvement, co-curricular activities – among them, athletics, campus ministry, Christian service, fine arts and much more.

How Can I Help?

The Annual Fund depends on yearly contributions from alumni, parents – current and alumni – and friends of Jesuit to bridge the “GAP”, which is $2,500. Many cannot afford to give this “GAP” amount, while others can give in excess of the “GAP” amount. Every gift is greatly appreciated and makes a difference!

Carol Wieckowski Dreyer & Debbie Martial Carol Wieckowski Dreyer and Debbie Martial were named the 2017 recipients of Jesuit High School’s highest honor, The Insignis Award, in recognition of their outstanding commitment and generous support of Jesuit High School.

Carol and her husband, Roger, have been married for 37 years and have four children: two sons (Evan ’06 and Dylan ’12) & two daughters (Kelsey and Natalie). Carol is an attorney who specializes in personal injury defense. Her record of service is as impressive as her distinguished law career.

Debbie and her husband, Robin, have been married for 37 years and have four children: three sons ( Jason ’06, Ross ’08, Brent ’11) and one daughter (Amanda). Debbie is the CEO of her household and worked previously at NCR for 16 years.

Debbie and Carol first met at St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School, where they both served on the Board of Trustees. Their spirit of volunteerism and giving is shared throughout Sacramento, where they have served on numerous Boards of Directors, been involved with scouting and have supported the arts.

At Jesuit, they have served on the Board of Trustees, chaired PACE Auctions, worked on numerous fundraising campaigns - from the Chapel to the Stadium - and donated time, talent and resources to every major Jesuit event since their sons started here. They have done all of this with great generosity of heart and love of Jesuit. Carol and Debbie, we are grateful to have this opportunity to say “thank you” for all you do and have done to support Jesuit’s missions to shape a new generation of Men for Others.

017 Alumni Reunion & Homecoming Weekend = A Huge Success! On September 29 – October 1, the Jesuit High School Alumni Office hosted eleven events, with alums from 1967 – 2013 attending the Welcome Back ’67 Lunch, Guys Night Out Tailgate, Homecoming BBQ, and Anniversary Class events for ’67, ’77, ’87, ’97 and ’07.

This year had special significance as we celebrated our first-ever 50th Class Reunion with the Class of 1967. As our first graduating class, they started in September of 1963 as the only class on campus. In May of 1967, 70 young men crossed the stage and continued their journey beyond Jesuit High School as Men for Others. These pioneering students, who were here when it all began, received their Golden Diplomas at their 50th Reunion Celebration.

It was great to visit with our alums and hear their stories: senior pranks, favorite teachers and classes, what has changed since they were on campus. The best part was the reminder that although the look of the campus has changed with new buildings and improvements, what has stayed the same is our students! Current Marauders, just like the pioneers of the Class of 1967, learning in the classroom, playing sports, enjoying co-curriculars and discovering who they are and where their journey will take them.

hile it is true that our greater Sacramento Community remains home for most of our graduates, Jesuit also sends thousands of Men For Others across America and around the world. As we continue our efforts to stay connected to our far-flung Marauders, we are thrilled to learn their stories and to share their memories of their time with us.

Most recently we are working with a Jesuit grad who lives out of the area. While he has been busy building a life with his wife and children he has remained committed to his Jesuit roots and is determined to pay forward the gift of his Jesuit experience.

He recalled to us that his love for science was nurtured here by one teacher whose contributions to Jesuit’s early days are often cited by our early graduates—Ron Edwards. He attributes his love for science and much of his success to Mr. Edwards.

“Mr. Edwards was an inspiration to me. He introduced me to chemistry and made learning fun. I think of him often and I want to be sure that Jesuit continues to offer that inspiration to others.” This alum went on to pursue first his bachelor’s degree and then his doctorate prior to going into industry. He has been involved with many startup companies during his career and is still working in the field.

So, in honor of Mr. Edward and his love for Jesuit, this alum has established the Chemistry Encouragement Fund.

This fund was set up to encourage future Jesuit students to consider pursuing careers in Chemistry. The endowment is intended to be grown through a legacy amount within his estate. The proceeds of this fund (5% per year to be distributed) will have little restriction for the absolutely superb current Chemistry staff at Jesuit, just that these funds be used to encourage interest in chemistry. Concepts discussed with teaching staff were for cool new experiments, travel to compete in local, regional or national chemistry events, travel for meeting, to help fund lectures or additional visiting teachers. He has committed to add to this fund this year in the name of whoever can guess the name of this alumnus.
