Jesuit High School

Mission Statement Jesuit High School of Sacramento is a Roman Catholic college preparatory dedicated to forming competent young men as conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others for the greater glory of God.

Policy of Non-Discrimination Jesuit High School admits students of any religion, race, color, national origin or disability to the rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, employment or other school administered programs.

Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignation values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community. Through participation in athletics at Jesuit High School, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the studentathlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God; that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond self-interest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

Jesuit 101 Enrollment: 1068 School Colors: Red and Gold School Mascot: Marauders The faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued support of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout our 52 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition. The advertisements in this booklet were sold to help support the students and the athletic programs of the school. Please patronize the businesses who generously chose to advertise in this program; they, together with loyal support of the Jesuit Booster Club, are in great part, responsible for our school’s continued development and success. 4

From the President and Principal

elcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of W Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your enthusiasm and

generosity. Please accept our thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community. Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (We like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it all for God’s greater glory. What will we do with what we have been given? All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words, but by our works. To our student-athletes, we encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches and teachers. To our parents, coaches and teachers, we encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, we encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stands, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are. Our sports success over the years has come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder, become more skillful and give opportunity to show all who come to see our teams play what is possible when talent and desire combine in response to challenge. We welcome you and your fans to our campus. Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. To our JHS Booster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches. Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs. May God bless you. GO MARAUDERS!

It is my hope that many of you will consider participation in our athletic program, along with many other co-curricular opportunities offered by Jesuit High School. We couldn’t maintain the sports programs at Jesuit without our Booster Club. I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize the efforts of a few key members, including President Hugo Schmidt, Event Staffing Chair Linda Metcalf and Snack Bar Chair Karen Barbre. The Jesuit Booster Club is vital to the function of the athletic program, and I would like to encourage all members of the Jesuit community to consider being involved with the program. Special thanks go to our 201516 game staff Tim Fleming ‘77(announcer), Mark Hilder ‘80 (scoreboard operator) and John’70 & Ellie Meissner (chain gang coordinators) for their continued support of Jesuit Football. In keeping with our tradition of sportsmanship, I would also like to highlight the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” program. Our student athletes, Jesuit families, friends and fans demonstrate gracious and respectful behavior to officials and our guests from other schools at athletic events. I am proud of the way we pursue victory with honor and want to emphasize how important it is that we continue to model that respectful behavior for our students to witness. Finally, please support our many patrons who have advertised in these pages and have signs placed at our athletic venues during our games and matches. Your sponsorship enables us to purchase needed items for our teams and studentathletes in order to provide them with the finest equipment and facilities possible as they represent Jesuit through our sports programs. Thank you for your continued support of Jesuit High School. Our coaching staff - assistant athletic director, Ross Evans, and administrative assistant athletic director, Robin Cummings and I - look forward to working with you to execute another exciting athletic experience at Jesuit High School. Go Marauders! Best, Gregory C. Harcos ‘89 Director of Athletics

Our Students s a Jesuit, Catholic college A preparatory high school, we are committed to the excellence of our

broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God in service who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to justice. The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

From the Booster Club President elcome back, Marauders! Whoever W said, “Once your son ends up in high school, you won’t ever see them

again,” obviously did not get involved with their school. When your son attends Jesuit, he is not just attending a great high school, he is entering a Jesuit community that welcomes his entire family. At Jesuit, one of the ways that you, as parents, can be involved is by supporting or joining the Jesuit Boosters. Our main purpose, as Jesuit Boosters, is to enhance and boost your family’s experience at Jesuit. We “boost” the boys by running the snack bar and by providing support for concerts, plays, BBQs and banquets. Jesuit Boosters are actively boosting all aspects of school spirit. From athletics to the arts, your Jesuit Boosters are here to deliver a fulfilling high school experience for your sons and your family. Jesuit Boosters offer so many ways to enjoy the Jesuit experience with your son. Don’t be that parent that later wishes they had been more involved. Get involved early so you can benefit by the memories and friends you will gain. Join us for events like the “Back to School Bash” that welcomes in the new school year, or the best Crab Feed in the area every January! You can volunteer to host an athlete for the Fr. Barry S.J. tournament or chaperone a dance. Jesuit Boosters offer many ways to help out in the spirit of Christian service and Jesuit pride.

Football Preview and Coaches football is very excited for the 2015 season. The team is working feverishly to further our Jfromesuit commitment to each other and our Jesuit community. The Marauders return 25 lettermen the 2014 team, including many in key positions on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The Seniors have led the charge during an inspiring offseason.

The season kicks off with former state title champion Granite Bay, followed by a much anticipated home game against Yuba City, in the best, newly-renovated field in Northern California, Hanson McClain Advisors Stadium. Our competitive pre-season will end with a game against Christian Brothers in the 45th Annual Holy Bowl. After a bye, Jesuit will begin competition in the grueling Delta League with games against Pleasant Grove, Davis, Elk Grove, Sheldon, Franklin and Monterey Trail, before finishing the season off against Grant. Players and coaches in the Jesuit football community will continue to foster a program built on the identity of the “Marauder Way.” An identity created through mental and physical toughness, unity as a group, and a commitment to working hard everyday. Character reflects in each player’s willingness to be honest, communicate, and listen to both coaches and fellow teammates. Community is developed by gaining trust; working hard to fill a role on the team; being supportive of each other regardless of the circumstances; and pride in being a Marauder. Simply put, the “Marauder Way” means: You can count on me and I will find the better of myself, and be constant and consistent. Go Big Red!

Cross Country Preview and Coaches esuit’s 2015 Cross Country team appears to be the strongest harrier group in many years. Jduring The Marauders bring to the starting line, six runners who broke 10 minutes for 3200 meters the spring track season. Leading the group is Senior Sean Kurdy, a 9:08 3200 runner and section champ last fall in cross country. Kurdy placed 5th at the State meet and ranks among the state’s top returning distance runners. Junior Ben Holland follows him. Holland was an individual qualifier at last year’s State meet and recorded a fine 9:32 best for 3200 meters in the spring. Right with him should be senior Patrick Cummings, who had excellent marks in the 800, 1600 and 3200 during the track season. Senior Michael Lackner should keep Holland and Cummings company; he recorded marks of 4:36 and 9:41 in the spring. Junior Brendan Jones ran an excellent 4:25 for 1600 in the spring and can compete with Holland, Cummings and Lackner. Senior Matthew Sickman had a somewhat limited track season due to injury, but still managed an excellent 9:58 3200. Junior Robert Bell rounds out the top seven. He won the Section Sophomore Cross Country title last fall, and should be right up there with the others despite a track season marked with injury and illness. Also on deck are Sophomores Jordan Rahe and David Vincent, as well as Junior Alex Tyree and Freshman Miles Worthen. In pre-season polls, the Marauders rank #2 to Davis in Northern California and could place among the top teams at the State Championships. The Marauders open with the annual inter-squad Meet the Marauders on August 22rd, at Hoffman Park. Their first big meet is the Jesuit/Davis Jamboree at Granite Regional Park on September 12th. Two meets featuring many of the state powerhouses are the Stanford Invitational on September 26th and the Clovis Invitational on October 10th. The season concludes with the Delta League Championships on October 31st at Willow Hill, the Section Championships on November 14th at Willow Hill, and the 29th annual California State Championships on November 28th at Woodward Park in Clovis.

Water Polo Preview and Coaches ollowing a 2014 CIF championship season, the 2015 Jesuit water polo team will have some F big shoes to fill. The program will look to replace all seven starters from last year’s squad that went 22-8 on the season. Head Coach Zac Koerner looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that this season brings.

“I am really excited for the season to get started. There are going to be a lot of opportunities for our athletes to contribute in ways that may have been unavailable last season.” The team will look for leadership from Senior Erik Echeona, one of the few returning athletes to play significant minutes on last season’s team. The Marauders will also look for new contributors to step up from their senior, junior and under classmen players. The 2015 schedule will provide many opportunities for the athletes to compete against some of the best teams in Northern California and the country. The Marauders will open the season by travelling to Clovis and Clovis West high schools before hosting Palo Alto and Gunn High Schools the following weekend. Additionally, the team will travel to the Schmitt Tournament and S & R Sport tournament again this season, along with competing in the Delong Tournament and hosting the Jesuit Invitational. “We have a very challenging schedule this year that will really give us a great chance to improve throughout the season. With so many new athletes being asked to come in and contribute, we should get better as the season progresses. Our goal is to play our best water polo at the end of the season.”

Soccer Preview and Coaches

he 2015 varsity soccer team hopes to continue and surpass the success of last year’s T squad. The 2014 squad won the Delta League with a record of 12-1-1. This team finished the season as the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section Semi-Finalist while posting an overall record

of 24-2-1. In addition, the Marauders received a NSCAA Final National #18 ranking (twice ranked in top 10 nationally during the season), a #24 National Ranking in the TopDrawerSoccer National Poll and a #6 National Ranking by MaxPreps at the seasons end. The Marauders were ranked #1 in California. This team had one of the most difficult schedules in the country, playing competitors from Portland through the Bay Area. Six Seniors moved on to college programs, including Luc Barbe (West Point Military Academy), Diego Buenrostro (Southern Oregon University), Matt Carnefit (San Jose State University), Gonzalo Garcia (Southern Oregon University), Max Kearney (Cal Baptist) and Nicolas Kolokotronis (UC Davis). These Seniors join a long list of Marauders actively playing at the collegiate and professional levels. This season’s team hopes to continue the Marauder tradition of excellence. The 2015 team is composed of a talented group of Seniors and Juniors, boasting five returning starters and twelve returning players. Three Seniors have already committed to college soccer programs or are considering offers. Challenges will begin early with games against talented teams, including Chaminade (St. Louis), University (SF), Holy Cup rival Christian Brothers and neighborhood rival Rio Americano). Jesuit will test their talents against out-of-state teams from Portland. Hopefully, with unselfish play and hard work, the 2015 team will achieve the goal of another section title.

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor 1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.” 2. It is the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.” 3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible. 4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character. 5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators. 6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules. 7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents. 8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed. 9. School Boards, superintendents, principals, school administrators and everyone involved at any level of governance in the CIF must maintain ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of CIF programs. Such individuals must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals and that the academic, social, emotional, physical and ethical well50

being of student-athletes is always placed above desires and pressure to win. 10. All employees of member schools must be directly involved and committed to the academic success of student-athletes and the character-building goals of the school. 11. Everyone involved in competition, including parents, spectators, associated student body leaders, and all auxiliary groups have a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and to treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a special responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that their student-athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct, including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations. 12. School Boards, superintendents, and school administrators of CIF member schools must ensure that coaches, whether paid or voluntary, are competent to coach. Training or experience may determine minimal competence. These competencies include basic knowledge of: 1) The character building aspects of sports, including techniques and methods of teaching and reinforcing the core values comprising sportsmanship and good character; 2) The physical capabilities and limitations of the age group coached as well as the first aid; 3) Coaching principles and the rules and strategies of the sport. 13. Because of the powerful potential of sports as a vehicle for positive personal growth, a broad spectrum of school sports experiences should be made available to all of our diverse communities. 14. To safeguard the health of athletes and the integrity of the sport, school sports program must actively prohibit the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and performance enhancing substances, as well as a demand compliance with all laws and regulations, including those related to gambling and the use of drugs. 15. Schools that offer athletic programs must safeguard the integrity of their programs. Commercial relationships should be continually monitored to ensure against inappropriate exploitation of the school’s name or reputation. There should be no undue influence of commercial interests. In addition, sports programs must be prudent, avoiding undue dependency on particular companies or sponsors. 16. The profession of coaching is a profession of teaching. In addition to teaching the mental and physical dimensions of their sport, coaches, through words and example, must also strive to build the character of their athletes by teaching them to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and good citizens.
