Welcome to the 5th Annual Strickland & Driggers Bull Sale! We invite you to study the EPDs, as many of them are well above the breed averages. Listed will be percentile rankings 50% or better for EPDs and Performance Index’s on each lot. This information will allow you to see how the bulls rank for that trait within the entire breed. Approximately two thirds of the sale offering would be considered heifer safe according to their EPD ranking within the breed for Direct Calving Ease and Birth Weight. All the bulls are yearlings or long yearlings and have been developed in large pastures to allow for plenty of exercise. The bulls are not fat, but instead athletic and ready to go to work. All of them are black hided and either purebred Angus, purebred Simmental or SimAngus. These bulls are problem free cattle. Bulls were selected for good disposition, sound structure and growth rate. They were fed a free choice ration consisting of soy hull and corn gluten pellets and grass or peanut hay. They have passed a complete breeding soundness exam and have been ultrasound scanned for marbling and ribeye area. Many of the bulls offered in this sale are sired by breed leading A.I. sires and out of proven highly fertile, Reg. Simmental, Angus and SimAngus cows. These bulls, whether originating from Strickland Angus Farm, Driggers Simmental Farm or Boyett Farms, all share one important thing in common. They were bred to work in commercial cattle herds in the South Georgia heat and humidity and to go out and sire calves that have the potential to make their new owners money in the cow business. We ask you to study the sale catalog data closely and we are sure that you will find one or several bulls that meet the needs of your breeding program. The bulls are available for viewing anytime up until the sale. They will be on site at Strickland Angus Farm, noon or after, on Friday December 9. DELIVERY If you can not pick your bull up on sale day and will need him delivered, please let the sale clerk or the bull's owner know prior to departing the sale site. Bulls will be delivered as economically as possible. CARCASS ULTRASOUND Dr. Dean Pringle, meat scientist professor at the University of Georgia and owner of Pringle Imaging collected ultrasound data from the bulls on 10-16-16. GENETIC DEFECTS All cattle sold are guaranteed free of known genetic defects unless indicated. HERD HEALTH Routine herd health and vaccinations up to date on all animals. All bulls have been vaccinated and boostered for IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV and Lepto. In addition, all bulls have been vaccinated and boostered for 7-Way Clostridial (Blackleg). The most recent booster vaccination was given to all bulls on November 16, 2016. All bulls were also dewormed with Ivermectin at this time. 1
A Guide to Understanding and Using the Angus and Simmental Dollar Indexes Let’s keep it simple – if you sell your calves at weaning and retain replacement heifers, or background cattle, $W (Angus) and API (Simmental) should be more important to you than $B (Angus) or TI (Simmental). If you feed out your calves, retain ownership and see them through finishing, $B and TI will have more importance for you. All four indexes are multi-trait indexes, combining many traits of economic importance. ALL FOUR are important indexes as all cattle are eventually harvested so the carcass components should not be ignored even if you do sell your calf crop at weaning time. Someone down the road will feed and harvest those cattle and they will be more likely to return to you to buy your calves if the next link in the chain is profitable too. The following information comes from various articles written by American Simmental and American Angus Association Staff. All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6000 over a +50 bull of both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. Current Average Sim Hybrid API index is +120.7 and TI is +67.00. $W – Weaned Calf Value Ask an experienced cow-calf producer to identify the characteristics of a profitable beef cow and you will probably get a response like this: reproductively sound, calves easily, transmits rapid growth, enough milk (but not too much), raises an above average calf year after year, moderate mature size, reduced feed energy needs. Cows meeting these requirements will generate profit, because they do most everything right. A TOOL FOR THE COW HERD Above average outputs (pounds of calf weaned) coupled with average or below average feed inputs are sure to improve the bottom line. But is it even possible to create a cow herd that gets so many things right? Pipe dream or achievable task? Research using the AAA database indicates that it can be done and the $W is the right tool for the job. If your quest is to build a productive and profitable cow herd, the Association’s bioeconomic index called weaned calf value or $W, can help you reach that goal. Weaned calf value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth transmitted to the calf, maternal milk and mature cow size. If you select for higher $W animals, the results will generally be more early growth, moderate mature size, above average (though typically not extreme) milk, and heavier calf weaning weights. Higher $W females get these things right and are constructed in a more desirable package. USING $W AS A SELECTION TOOL Not every high $W cow will be stamped out of a cookie-cutter mold, of course. $W can and should be used as a genetic selection tool to help build increased profit potential to a cow herd. It will pay producers to pursue higher $W cattle, while at the same time keeping a sharp eye on other individual traits and EPDs, and $Values they deem important to their operations. Doing so can help you build a cow herd that does almost everything right. $B – Beef Value $B is an overall $Value for post-weaning feedlot and carcass value. It combines $F and $G as a selection tool for quality, red meat yield and pounds produced. The $B is not simply the sum of $F and $G. $Values are business minded and in the language of economics. They have a great deal to offer the commercial bull buyer in terms of providing a multi-trait selection tool. It is important to remind Angus bull buyers these are one of various tools they use to make their operations successful. Selection indexes will continue to become more widely accepted across the seed stock industry as a means to identify genetics for use in commercial programs.

All the bulls in the sale were developed using a commodity blend ration that consisted of: 50% Soyhull pellets, 30% Corn gluten pellets, 10% cracked shelled corn, 5% Liquid mollassas and a vitamin mineral premix. The feed recipe is very similar to the feed used in both the Tifton and Calhoun Bull Tests. The bulls gained an average of 3.25 pounds per day. They also received Bermuda grass pasture and either peanut or Bermuda grass hay free choice. They were raised in large pastures that provided ample room for exercise and development. They are hard and ready to go to work to breed your cows.
