Jessie Chien is a creator in several different aspects born in Taiwan, Taipei. Attended at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology towards a bachelor's degree in commercial design. For now, she majors in philosophy department of National Taiwan University.
Thanks to the philosophy and logic training practice, she's strong at concept developing and proposals. Also, as the result of study in philosophy and literature, she has the ability of writing and narrating.
She has a diverse interest in art, music and philosophy. Her interest includes art critic, photography, VJ, production design and video art, speculative design, literature and music. Also, she participated in several video making projects. Besides designing, she studied aesthetics, existentialism, feminism, gender theories and post-humanism to gain the depth of her creations and observations. In her works, you can clearly observe the influence of rock ’n’ roll culture and the bold, uninhibited style.
She takes travel as a hobby, in target to broaden her horizon, reach out to anything new and inspiring. Now, she keeps an identity as a graphic designer, a VJ and a freelancer.
INK SPEAKS
Tattoo is the way to convey oneself, is a way to "speak with your skin". Therefore, I chose "Ink Speaks" as the theme of the exhibition. In Chinese it sounds the same with " 墨言 ", which means "no need to speak".
To convey this idea, I recorded the sounds of tattoo process in a tattoo studio, recreated the acoustic wave by dripping ink, and finally painted the pattern on skin to present the form of tattoo.
NATIONAL MUSEUM of MARINE BIOLOGY and AQUARIUM
This project produces the concept “stream between mountain and sea” . Since the aquarium is located in the southernmost tip of Taiwan island, I combined the shape of Hengchun Peninsula and waves to create the logo. And the color is inspired by the iconic “Kelp Forest” exhibition area of the aquarium.
J.Y. ROVASE
Personal Project
J. Y ROVASE aims to create a brand new impression of enzyme nutritional supplement products. It aims to avoid the image of gender stereotype and medical image, recreate a high end young and unisex image. After taking the product, any sorrow will be gone with your metabolism.
The pattern is squirming like intestines on the bottle. Printed with temperature sensitive ink, the colorful pattern turns white when the bottle was picked up. The loosening of color symbolizes the metabolite brought by enzyme.
ASHEN

Ashen is a Taiwanese grind core / death metal band founded since 2007. Though in Taiwan, Chinese character logos can hardly be seen in heavy metal genre. Since they named the band Ashen in Chinese as “礙礙”(impeded tongue), I thus tempted to design a highly recognizable identity for the band. Instead of the traditional nasty and brutal logos, it is more elegant and meanwhile keeping the impactful grind core visual style.
The logo was applied to every event visuals, including Ashen’s brand new album released in 2023.
BRUTAL TAIPEI
Brutal Taipei is a indie heavy metal mixed concert held at live houses in Taipei for several times.
To create the image, I found chewed betel nuts deposed on streets of Taipei, ravaged the printed out logotype with it and finally photographed it. I tempted to make the graphic more intense and aggressive, but still
provides a sense of aesthetic. Since betel nut gives a boorish image in Taiwanese culture, I think it’s the best way to represent the theme “Brutal Taipei”.
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE of VISUAL KEI
Visual Kei is a genre of rock music originated in Japan. It is a specific music style, instead, it’s a general term of a kind of music culture. Visual Kei is inspired by Glam Rock. They dress in exaggerating ways while performing, thus gives a strong stage impressions.
This book is on it’s end to edit and compose the culture and history of Japanese Visual
Kei music. The book cover is binded with copper sheet, printed topic with the technique electrolytic metal printing, and decorated with embroidered lace fabrics. As a respond to the culture, I tried to make the binding and layout as gorgeous as possible.
HANDSOME MAN AND CIGARETTE

Based on Dazai Osamu’s article “Handsome Man and Cigarette”, I created a series of ”exquisite corpse“ games. The audiences were invited to participate in the game, and create a brand new content of the article.
The audience has to choose their character between
four vivid featured ones, including— the Milk Spilling Clockmaker, the Smoking Venus, the Folk Guitarist Living 1 Centimeter Underground, the Cookie Crumbs in the Eye of Cat. Then, they filled up a questionnaire serval questions to take part in my exquisite corpse game experiment, according to the character they’ve chosen.
Everyone know that the presidents always keep a dolphin in their suit pockets. Feminism was outgrown from the pist il of rose. Augustus the Great never dare to watch a horror movie. And an unicorn can be swallowed after dipping in soy sauce.

BIZARRE HAPPENINGS EYEWITNESSED OVER FOUR DECADES IN TAIWAN

Setting in 2060s Taiwan, we imagined a world where the dead spirits are wreaking everywhere. The government established a ghost busting institution, making them beloved by public. However, behind the public’s back, they use spirits as ingredient to manufacture drugs and sells them back to society. Besides making immense amount of money, this make sure that enough people will be killed and provide sufficient future ingredients. The maelstrom end up to be the government’s conspiracy.
The building of this project mixed several techniques concluding digital painting,3D modeling, graphic design, image postproduction .etc. All concepts, from the plot, printing, layout design to character persona are based on Taiwanese folklore religions, customs, ethnicity and history.
民間對道教信仰之依賴，已然達到侵蝕生活之境界，筆者在此 略舉一二：宮廟成為商業區之中心點，土地租金由內向外遞減 ︵上圖為近年之競租曲線︶，宮廟周圍房價居高不下；另，最近 出現許多如符咒app、躑筊app、線上驅魔等服務，人民 凡事皆求神，失去自我思考之能力，實在悲哀，不忍卒睹。
ISCREAM
I tried to create a character mixing with rock ‘n’ roll style and the metallic texture. The character has a ferocious facial expression, vomiting a goldfish from its mouth, which shapes an androgynous and surreal figure.
SPIES OF THE STIR-FRIED FOOD RESTAURANT
Stir-fried food restaurant is an iconic part of Taiwanese grassroots food culture. People come for drink and last night supper within this vigorous atmosphere.
In this project, I imagined a stir-fried restaurant that is in fact a spy base hidden underground. All of the Taiwanese traditional food culture symbols, including “Taiwan Beers” and roadside banquet tablewares become secret gadgets in this case.
The scene design is a fusion of Taiwanese aesthetics and exquisite spy-style fashion.
Elements such as traditional colors, water towers, iron sheet houses, beer crates, giant lobster signboard, fresh seafood fish tanks, the wealth-brining fish arowana (and a crocodile) were brought in. This special place also has the most representative and typical name “Vigorous Seafood ( 生猛海鮮 ) ” of a Taiwanese stir-fried restaurant
LIE is a song of Taiwanese rock band "No Party For Cao Dong". Inspired by Edogawa Ranpo’s novel “The Human Chair”, I modeled a bed with limbs to present the helplessness of living described by the lyrics. There’s a man trapped in a bed which symbolizes subsistence. Eager to escape but being disempowered and helpless, until the death.
This is a work of Kaohsiung Music Center VJ training program. Due to the project time limit, the whole animation were completed in 5 days. Also, the film was played public at venue Live Warehouse and received several positive comments.

Gan Ah Niah means "Oh, is it? " in Taiwanese. We created a short film of daily obejects. However, all objects reacted surprisingly later. Collocating the music "Tequila" by The Champs, we tried to create a simple animation which gives a cheerful meme vibe.

This project is the music video of NTU graduation song.
I tried to create the characters that can be recognized as sorts of typical NTU students. And create outfits and room decorations which suits their personality perfectly.

“Scapegoat” is a traditional Taiwanese witchcraft which can bring the dead back to life by sacrificing another person’s life.
After building a Taiwanese typical living room, a altar and a Taiwanese bourgeoisie family. I tried to brought in all the decorations of Taiwanese funeral ceremony and worship. Such as placing a immense amount of paper lotus and spirit money. It aims to create a Taiwanese style spooky atmosphere.
