Program Notes

Cider sets a poem by Amanda Hollander. The brief but concentrated text expresses warm, comforting love, but also the fear of being hurt by love. The song was written for Tim Stoddard as part of The American Opera Project’s Composers & the Voice program, where it will be workshopped.

Text

I love you like a cup of cider fizzing memory, Tied to earth and tree by root and buried seed. I love the hum of waiting, barrel-bound, to fill the cup. Yet in the echo of crisp leaves I fear the apple after-bite.
