A Note from the Editor-in-Chief...
lease forgive my tardiness in publishing the Beautiful World Magazine this month. Fall in
general tends to feel a bit overwhelming with the start of school and a steady increase in demand for products and edits. 2020 took my normal Fall stress and kicked it up notch. Or seven notches. Who knew Fall went to an eleven? I want to be transparent with you in all this craziness we are collectively experiencing. I'm behind. I'm tired. I'm struggling. It's OK. I'm late with the magazine, but it got done eventually. As will the laundry. Well, maybe not the laundry. But other stuff. The important thing is that while making time for making art might get delayed, but it doesn't get entirely lost in the shuffle.

he beautiful thing about creating art is that it doesn't expire. You might feel rusty, (I know I do) but it's like riding a bike. When you finally have a moment to sit and focus, art will be right there, waiting to take you to unexpected places (even if you're still stuck inside the house most of the time due to this pandemic). If you've not made much art, or you're behind in your client work, rest assured you aren't alone. You WILL get it all done. Well, maybe not the laundry.

Artist of the Month Artist Month of the
Julie Johnson Lochridge Jessica Drossin: Julie, let me give folks a little introduction. You are talented in so many different forms of art, from photography, to painting, to dress-designing and sewing. Can you please tell me a little about your background?
Before
Julie Johnson Lochridge: I realized I had some artistic talent when I was about eight. From then on, I drew pretty much constantly in my spare time. This led to paintings (with pastels mainly) in high school and beyond. After I graduated, I started to receive a lot of commission work, but took a year out to go to USU on a full-ride scholarship in art. My dad joined the art world during that time as a sculptor. I decided to come home and paint full time. My dad was selling sculptures of famous show horses to the owners, and I would paint them. That seemed quite lucrative for a 19 year old girl, so I stopped going to college and launched from that point onward as a painter. Ironically, my husband started sculpting, not even realizing his talent, and we lived as artists for several years. My children all are artistic as are my 11 younger siblings.
JD: When did you get into photography? JJL: I got into photography through the art. When I was 18, my dad gifted me a camera for my birthday, and I started taking photos of things I wanted to paint. I realized that the only way I was going to grow as an artist was to do my own compositions and stories. So I've been taking pictures for reference material since that time. My son and I started a photography business a few years ago. I was using my camera often and learning so much and how to use one well, so I decided to step aside and let him and his wife run the business, and I went into creative photography as Julie Lochridge Photography. I feel like my photographs and how I edit them are really just an extension of what I was doing with my paintings: storyboarding ideas, finding reference material, composing the scene and drawing the elements in and then painting them. JD: I can definitely see that storyboarding in your art. Your series are always very detailed and complete with a definite beginning, middle and end. It reminds me of the pre-production for movies or graphic novels.

JJL: I guess I'm a bit of a storyteller. I like the sequence of the story in my mind to be in my photographs. I do like to take that one shot that I love, but my heart is really in the sequence and progression. So that's what I do and why I do it.

JD: Do you pre-sketch ideas before you shoot or do you improvise on the fly? JJL: I do some pre-sketches, but I often feel like that takes too much time, so instead, I'll go online and find poses or ideas that I like and let that inspire me. But I have a very clear idea in my head what I want the scenes to look like. I spend a lot of time in my head and lose sleep often because of it. And when I really am stuck, I'll draw it out. As soon as I have a story in my mind, I start flipping through my mental catalog of locations I've seen that maybe I can use, or I drive around and just look. I always ask permission to use anyone's property. I then start thinking of a dress that I want to fit the narrative. I was getting frustrated looking for what I wanted, so I started sewing my own dresses. I do sketch those out on my iPad before I start. And then I improvise on the fly on location because things don't always look like you have pictured in your mind. ! I have told people this for years about my paintings — and say it now for photography — I plan the best I can for my shoot (or painting) and then I do the work and let the story tell itself.

JD: What tips or advice would you recommend to new photographers who love your work? JJL: Work hard, climb that mountain, wade out into a pond, and overcome your fears. Challenge yourself. Be willing to take pictures that aren't always as perfect as you want them to be. Those are the times you learn the most. Be willing to share and collaborate. You can learn so much from other people, even people that aren't "artists." And you're never too old. I started my creative photography journey in my 50s. Get an idea and do your best to execute it.
JD: What products would you recommend to others? JJL: I have so many of Jessica's products. I love Wuthering Heights with all of my soul. It creates a mood that I just adore. I love JD Force of Nature to create drama! I love the JD Illuminations Instant Overlays. They bring cohesiveness to the whole picture. I love JD Leaves and Glitter and Green Tone Correction. The list goes on. I'm almost exclusively a JD product user and no one else's.
