Bus stops aren’t unheard of in Indonesia. However, more often than not, they are not properly designed and maintained. Located at the edge of South Tangerang City is Halte Kademangan, a rundown bus stop that has long since dimmed its lights. The surrounding path was cracked and in shambles, covered in road debris and weeds. At night, no glow lights up the bus stop, not even a street light or lamp post in sight within the radius of the bus stop. It remains hidden in the darkness, engulfed in the shadows of the surrounding kiosk lighting.
In spite of its current condition, the bus stop is still well used by adults and students commuting to and from work and school. In hopes that this bus stop can become a safe transitional space between home and other places, a place where one can feel safe and close to nature, an extension of a shelter.
The bus stop seeks to provide a safe space, from the burning sunlight, from the road of cars ahead, and the darkness of night. The roof of the bus stop is tilted back with an extending front that stretches downwards, creating a triangle like shape to prevent glare from the morning sun as the front of the bus stop faces east.
