ABOUT THE PLAY

The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs, a witty critique of society through the story of Leonor, a woman who sets out to find her one-time lover (Don Juan, naturally) and bring him to justice. The play is a comedy of wild intrigue and lively ingenuity in which Leonor crosses geographical boundaries and defies social expectations of gender in order to bring her fickle lover to justice and restore her lost honor. The author, Ana Caro Mallén (ca.1601–ca.1645) was a Spanish poet and playwright. Born an enslaved person in Granada, Spain, she came to be one of the most celebrated playwrights of Spain’s Golden Age.

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:

This is a story about love, forgiveness and young people growing into themselves. Leonor’s fire and fury comes from a deep love that she feels is worth fighting for, even to extreme degrees. Don Juan’s transformation is a blessing to the women around him, not only because he returns the love of Leonor, but because he has learned how his toxic behavior harms others. Ana Caro gave us this beautiful opportunity to reach younger and broader audiences by threading these important themes into deliciously comedic situations. Estela, Lisarda, Fernando and Ludovico create a web of missed connections to untangle, each character bringing their own blindspots to the table. And then we have Ribete and Tomillo, the Harlequins, whose nature is base and self-interested and somehow the most relatable to anyone who knows what it means to work hard. All of these characters are flawed, all of these characters grow and all of these characters are worthy of love. Students only hear about one playwright from this time period, but Ana Caro is a renegade in her own right whose work has survived the centuries for good reason.

ANA CARO DE MALLÉN Y SOTO (Playwright)

Ana Caro de Mallén y Soto was a Spanish poet and playwright and one of the few women writers of the 17th century. She was born as an enslaved morisco person in Granada, between 1590 and 1600 and she was adopted by Ana María de Torres and Gabriel Caro de Mallén. She received a private education, because in 17th century Spain women were not permitted to attend formal school. Her career took off when she published poetry and studies for festivals and cultural events in theaters called corrales, in 1628 in Seville. Ana Caro was the author of religious plays as well as a number of entremeses. Only two of her full-length plays are known today: El Conde Partinuplé and Valor, Agravio y Mujer (translated as The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs). Ana Caro made money from her poetry and plays, making her one of the first professional female writers. Her work was praised by eminent playwrights and novelists of her day. Her friend and celebrated novelist María de Zayas wrote, “audiences have praised her, and every great mind has crowned her with laurel and cries of victory, writing her name on the city streets.” Ana Caro appears to have died of the plague between 1645 and 1660.
