The Co-Curricular program holds a central role in the Senior School experience, offering students a diverse range of activities encompassing music, sports, dance, and drama. These activities are integral to school life, both within and beyond the standard curriculum. Moreover, JESS has a longstanding tradition of participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, which entails engaging in numerous expeditions, charitable initiatives, and community service. We are active within the community and JESS have been present in the Gulf Debates competition, the Wharton Investment Challenge, Model United Nations, and numerous sporting tournaments in the region. Participation in these diverse and engaging activities not only promotes physical and mental well-being but also provides opportunities for students to explore their passions and interests that will endure beyond their time at school. The school community, including form tutors and Heads of Year, actively encourages student involvement in these activities. Our guiding principles of Curiosity and Commitment ensure that every student has the opportunity to discover and pursue their individual passions. The ever-evolving and expanding roster of clubs and societies stands as a testament to the success of this approach.

Sport Sport plays a major role in many of the students’ lives at JESS. The aim is to discover and develop the potential within students through practice, training and competition. Sport also develops confidence and resilience through physical, technical and mental stimulus, and exposure to success and failure in order to develop resilience. At JESS, we pride ourselves on the number of teams on offer and amount of opportunity to represent the school through DASSA leagues, regional invitational tournaments and international competitions. The main sports at JESS are Basketball, Football, Netball, Rugby and Swimming. Athletics, Cricket, Cross Country, Golf and Water polo are also popular and operate through the diverse ECA programme. Success might not always happen, but the willingness to work hard and to improve is always the aim. Effort is simply the most important element of anything any boy or girl does when training or representing JESS.

Sport Selection Boys and girls are to be aware that by playing for a school team, they are representing the school and should give their full commitment, remembering that their behaviour will reflect on themselves and their school. Selection for a team is an ongoing process across the whole season, as such, players can be moved across teams and positions from week to week. The expectation is that pupils prioritise school sport for both training and fixture commitments should they wish to represent the school. Selection is based around what it means to be JESS athlete. On occasion when players do change teams the coach will explain the reasons behind the decision and give the individual things to work on. Parents are asked to refrain from questioning team selection and instead encourage their son or daughter to speak their coach and seek direction. On certain occasions internal clashes between sports do occur and the Sports department will do their upmost to keep these to a minimum. However, when this does happen the decision will lie with Head of Secondary Sport. The priority will always be given to what is decided as the more important event / fixture. The greater good will always be at the heart of the decision over the individual preference. Likewise, clashes between extracurricular activities (Sport, Music and Drama) are kept to a minimum, however when they do occur it will be up to the Director of Co-Curricular to oversee the priority and what the pupil is expected to do. Compromise will always be sought, but it is the responsibility of the school to make the decision and to what is the priority on that occasion.
Communication Communication about team selection and fixture details are published on SOCs and on team sheets via the Games noticeboards. It is the responsibility of the pupil to ensure that they are aware of dates, venues and timings. In the event of a clash an email or letter from parents outlining the reason for the clash must be presented. If a player becomes ill prior to a match they must let the coach or Head of Sport know ASAP. Under no circumstances should a message be passed on by another pupil. Any player letting his or her team down without prior notification or agreement with their coach will see the Head of Sport. In serious circumstances the Director of Sport will be informed and parents will be contacted. It only takes one member of a team not to turn up for the whole team and school to be affected.
Sport Training Training is the foundation of success in any sport. It builds physical fitness, sharpens technical skills, and develops mental resilience. Consistent training ensures that athletes are prepared not only for competition but also for the challenges that come with highperformance environments. It teaches discipline, teamwork, and the ability to adapt under pressure, qualities that extend beyond the playing field. Training is not just about improving performance; it is about creating habits that lead to long-term growth. Every session matters because progress is incremental. Commitment to training reflects a commitment to excellence.
Possible Changes and Adjustments Please note that training schedules may be subject to change due to fixture updates, weather conditions, current political issues other operational requirements or reducing intensity where necessary. All communications regarding changes will be made directly with students.
Fixtures All pupils selected to represent the school are expected to be available for every fixture, during the week and on weekends. In exceptional circumstances unavailability should be discussed with the coach giving at least 1 weeks’ notice: on no account must thoughtlessness lead to a team being short. All start and finish times will depend on several factors and can change. In principle most home games should start by 4.15pm and away fixtures should return to school by 6.15pm. All information is published on SOCs and on team sheets once the details are known, posted on the games notice board. Please note that on occasion fixtures can change night due to cancellations, postponements and clashes.
Training and Practice For the most update information on Sports and Training practices please refer to SOCS There’s no need to sign up for training or practice; students can simply turn up to the sessions, unless it is invite only.
Co-curricular Categories There are a wide variety of co-curricular clubs that are running each week at JESS. These have been planned under certain categories that also align with our JESS core values. There is certainly at least one club for everyone.

International Award The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award delivers the Bronze, Silver and Gold Award at JESS. For our Year 10 students and above, you can take part in an unforgettable journey of personal growth and adventure with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. This globally recognized programme challenges students to develop resilience, leadership, and teamwork through a variety of activities including physical recreation, skill-building, and community service. At JESS, participants benefit from structured support and guidance, with compulsory training sessions held every Tuesday lunchtime to prepare for the Adventurous Journeys and ensure success. Whether you're aiming to boost your university applications or simply want to push your boundaries, the International Award is your chance to shine beyond the classroom. Students will have received a letter home with instructions for signing up to the award.

Beyond the Curriculum at JESS This is an exciting time for the Performing Arts at JESS: a time of growth, creativity, and connection. Beyond the curriculum, we offer a vibrant and inclusive programme where students are not only encouraged to hone their craft, but to discover the sheer brilliance within themselves and each other. Our Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs) are more than just clubs, they are communities that become a second home. They are places where students arrive with curiosity and leave with confidence. Selected ECAs are designed for students who show potential. These groups are carefully curated to challenge, inspire, and unlock that potential helping students grow into confident, expressive performers. Students will be notified if they are invited to attend. Open ECAs are available to all students and strongly encouraged. These clubs are welcoming, inclusive, and designed to nurture creativity, collaboration, and joy. Auditioned ECAs offers students the opportunity to audition for selected groups. These are designed to identify and nurture potential, students will be informed if they are successful in securing a place. In the Performing Arts, opportunities stem from participation. By attending Performing Arts ECAs, students unlock new pathways from performances and leadership roles to collaborations and showcases. Consistent involvement builds confidence, skill, and visibility, opening doors to experiences that shape their artistic and personal journey. CISI Level 2 Fundamentals of Financial Services CISI Fundamentals of Financial Services is an engaging and accessible introduction to the world of finance, designed for students curious about banking, investment, insurance, and global markets. This course offers a broad overview of the financial services industry, covering key topics such as ethical behaviour, saving and borrowing, equities, bonds, derivatives, and financial planning. Through interactive learning and real-world examples, students will develop financial literacy, understand essential terminology, and gain the skills to perform basic financial calculations. Ideal for those considering careers in business, economics, or finance, the course also prepares students for further study and professional qualifications in the financial sector. At the end of the course, students sit a final examination at an external test centre, which provides formal certification upon successful completion. The exam fee is 407 AED, payable prior to booking. There are three sessions available: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afterschool. Please note this course is for Year 12 only.

Leadership for Life Academic success matters. But the young people who thrive beyond school are rarely defined by grades alone. They are the ones who can communicate with confidence, stay composed under pressure, work effectively with others, make sound decisions and step forward when leadership is needed. Leadership for Life has been designed by graduates of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, taking proven principles of leadership, character and personal responsibility and translating them into an engaging programme for young people. Across the programme, students are challenged to think, communicate, solve problems, lead teams, reflect on their decisions and become more confident in who they are and what they are capable of. This is not about creating soldiers. It is about developing the qualities that institutions such as Sandhurst have spent generations identifying and strengthening: confidence, resilience, integrity, responsibility, teamwork, communication and the courage to lead. Schools rightly place enormous emphasis on academic achievement. But there are some skills that cannot be developed through textbooks and examinations alone. At some point, every child will need to walk into a room and introduce themselves. Speak in front of others. Deal with disappointment. Make a difficult decision. Work with someone they do not naturally get along with. Take responsibility when something goes wrong. Or have the confidence to step forward when everyone else steps back. Those moments matter. And the earlier young people are given opportunities to practise them, the better prepared they are for school, university, employment and life beyond the classroom. Model United Nations What is MUN? MUN stands for Model United Nations. It is an educational simulation and academic activity where students play the role of delegates representing countries in the United Nations. The purpose of MUN is to provide participants with an understanding of international relations, diplomacy, debate and the workings of the United Nations.
What will I have to do? During MUN conferences, participants engage in debates and discussions on a variety of global issues, they propose solutions and work towards a consensus. Each participant or delegation is assigned a specific country to represent and they are expected to research, advocate for the positions of that country on various topics.
How will MUN benefit me? Joining MUN enhances your communication, research and critical thinking skills. It helps you develop global awareness, teamwork and leadership. Whilst boosting your confidence through public speaking, MUN also provides practical insights into international relations and diplomacy. The knowledge and skills acquired will not only contribute to a successful MUN experience but also serve you well in various academic and professional future experiences. Peer Mentoring Peer mentoring sessions involves working with Year 7 forms in Term 1 and Year 10 forms in Terms 2 & 3 to discuss important topics such as social media, body image, stress, timemanagement and organisation etc. This is a CAS project opportunity for Year 12 students. They will be delivering weekly mentoring sessions to Year 7 students during form time in T1 and Year 10 in T2 & 3. Topics covered include resilience, body positivity, friendships and mental wellbeing. As part of this project, Year 12 students will be trained by an external psychologist to become qualified and certified in Youth and Adolescent Mental Health First Aid.
