HAPPY 50 BIRTHDAY, JERSEY POST! TH

On 1 October 1969, there was a simple ceremony at the main post office in Broad Street to mark the start of Jersey’s postal independence from the British Postal Service. To mark the occasion, the first set of “Jersey stamps” was launched and Mr Frank Guenier MBE, was appointed to take the helm.

There have been notable milestones during the past 50 years and Jersey Post boasts a rich and interesting company history.

The organisation has moved its entire operation twice from the original Broad Street location, first to Mont Millais and then to Rue des Pres.

Fast forward several years and the 1990’s saw major developments for Jersey Post, the introduction of post codes, but also the employment of the first female delivery officers since 1798!

Times have perhaps changed more dramatically since then.

In 2006, Jersey Post became an incorporated business, stepping away from local government operation and operating commercially.

Customer demand for quicker services led to the introduction of automated sorting machines, not just for letters, but also for parcels in order to accommodate the massive increase in threedimensional mail.

This increase in parcels came hand-in-hand with a rapid and significant decline in letter mail, a perfect storm which culminated in the need for an ambitious international strategy to ensure long-term revenue growth and stability.

This saw diversification, not just into new services – Ship2me, Call & Check and digital communications for business clients - but also into new markets.

Jersey Post is no longer a Jersey business, but a global one with acquisitions across the world that form a network of delivery channels to reach new markets and customers.

However, in spite of Jersey Post’s new global stance, the organisation is still very much in touch with its local community and the needs of Islanders – both from a charitable perspective, where it supports a range of local charities and initiatives, but also from an environmental perspective, with the introduction of electric bikes and vans to its delivery fleet.

So, throughout October 2019, Jersey Post will be celebrating this milestone, but this time for a bigger, more diverse, more technology-enabled, global business.

50 YEARS OF JERSEY STAMP ISSUE Take a journey through fifty years of postal history with our special stamp issue!

Eight stamps depict the growth and change within Jersey Post during the last fifty years. Portraying a ‘Then and Now’ narrative of postal operations, four of the eight stamps have been produced using imagery from Jersey Post’s photographic archive, while the other four show Jersey Post’s current operation.

The dual aspect of the stamps inspire nostalgia for a bygone era, whilst at the same time offering an appreciation for how our advancements in processes and technologies have allowed postal operations to develop and become more efficient.

The imagery of our anniversary stamps have been enhanced with the use of a special gold hot foil printing technique. We have also issued a prestige booklet, containing four panes of stamps, providing a more detailed journey of

Jersey Post over its fifty years since independence.

52p and 67p pairs The 52p se-tenant pair represents the dramatic change in methods of island delivery, whilst the 67p pair shows how mail sorting has changed with innovation in technology.

99p and ÂŁ1.46 pairs The 99p stamps show the developments in counter services, which have been supplemented with new technologies and the ÂŁ1.46 pair demonstrates the growth of our now global network.

Huge congratulations to Tracey Muir, who won the naming competition for our new Jersey Post I.P.A to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Tracey won an Amazon Echo for choosing the winning name.

Congratulations also to the other members of staff who were shortlisted in the competition: Chris Thomas, Sonia Ferri, India Cook and James Martin.

The I.P.A. is a unique recipe, brewed especially for Jersey Post, with an on-brand red colour and a gold bottle cap to tie in with our 50th anniversary theme.

POSTEUROP This October, we are thrilled to be hosting the annual PostEurop Plenary Assembly here in Jersey.

PostEurop is the member-driven association, which has represented European public postal operators since 1993. It is committed to supporting and developing a sustainable and competitive European postal communication market accessible to all customers and ensuring a modern universal service. It is a restricted union of the UPU and participates regularly in UPU related activities.

The annual Plenary Assembly gathers Members of the association to discuss and approve matters pertaining to the governance of organisation. One of the largest recurring events for PostEurop, it welcomes members from 52 European postal administrations, dignitaries from the UPU and international restricted unions, CEOs, other stakeholders and postal experts.

Participants look forward to the Business Innovation Forum organised alongside the Plenary Assembly, which provides them with deeper insights into current postal interest areas, from Regulatory issues to New Market Trends. The Business Innovation Forum in Jersey will focus on future Innovations and pitches from a selected number of start-ups that drive convenience in E-Commerce services and enable new services using IT (translated into complex algorithms and Artificial Intelligence, Automation & Robotics applications).

We’ll also be showing the attendants some of the beautiful sights of Jersey, hosting dinners at both Le Mare Vineyards and The Lido at Havre des Pas. This is an exciting opportunity for Jersey Post to host the event, and we aim to provide an outstanding experience of the plenary, Jersey Post and Jersey as a whole.

STP - A PLATFORM FOR THE FUTURE The Seal the Pipeline (STP) project started back in March 2019, with the objective of providing a solid platform for Jersey Post to understand the steps it has to take to build a more modern and sustainable business for the future.

But what is STP? To answer this, we first need to understand the problems it is addressing.

Jersey Post has grown and diversified over the last 5 years at pace, and in order to meet this growth and diversification, we have developed various adhoc systems and processes to keep up with this rapid change.

Today, we have a varying range of products and even companies, but the systems and processes we use are no longer fit for the Jersey Post of today, let alone the future.

Our systems require a great deal of manual intervention, which adds time, as well as the potential for errors. Thus, information is slow to be produced and often not trusted.

How can we build for the future, if we don’t have confidence in the information being generated? How can we expect to provide a best-in-class service, if it takes far too long to obtain our service figures?

The STP project is designed to tackle these issues head on, across every department to enable the business to: • Reliably cost our products and services in an efficient and accurate way • Eradicate multiple information sources, which lead to unnecessary internal reconciliations • Capture all revenue accurately through to invoicing and payment • Have one source of truth through accurate data capture • Provide a platform for departments to analyse real-time data to make better business decisions • Have better visibility of business performance, both financial and operational • Gain a better understanding of where revenue, expenditure and contribution comes from

Since the project began in March, the STP team lead by Jamie Pestana and Dan Derry have engaged every department, working with key individuals to identify all the various problems and jointly develop potential solutions.

Early results of this collaborative approach have been successful with new systems soon to be introduced and old ones phased out.

More importantly, these changes are being led by Jersey Post employees for Jersey Post employees and our customers.

We believe these improvements will transform how we do business. It will give us meaningful information at our fingertips, and with the resulting dashboards, every member of Jersey Post will be able to see how their relevant department is performing on a live basis, against the KPIs that really matter.

Our customers will be able to interact with us on a more IT enhanced platform, giving them greater flexibility and opportunity.

This journey we have embarked upon is one of exciting change that will revolutionise Jersey Post, making us stronger, better informed, producing higher quality, enhancing the customer experience and improving our revenues.

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT SUCCESS Congratulations to Michael Borowski from the Digital team and Sarah Angell and Daniel McCarthy from the Change Management team who recently completed the Jersey Business Improvement Programme. Their aim was to review the digital team’s campaign management process, as it was heavily manual and they believed that there was scope to free up valuable resources.

The improvement will not stop here as the team carry on activity on further projects and more staff have been lined up for the next Jersey Business Improvement Programme.

As they further developed their lean tool-kit, they created a simple problem statement for the project:

“Campaign management is taking up valuable resources which could be used elsewhere.”

Implementing Improvements The success of the campaign management project had the added bonus of identifying improvements on a customer services project.

The customer services team can take over 150 calls per day, which the team identified can, in some way, be reduced through Automated Chat Bots and Interactive Voice Response (IVR).

By drastically reducing the number of calls, this would allow the customer service team to focus on more complicated enquiries, such as upselling products or building better relationships with customers and businesses.

ECO Nespresso Recycling We’ve teamed up with Nespresso to support in their efforts of recycling their coffee pods in the Channel Islands.

Our recycling points are located at the two main post offices in Jersey and Guernsey, as well as De Gruchy’s Jersey.

Nespresso customers can now order free recycling bags on the Nespresso website when ordering their coffee. Once these recycling bags are full with empty Nespresso coffee pods, they simply drop them off at one of our recycling points. Our posties then collect the recycled pods daily and we send them back to Nespresso for recycling.

Currently, Nespresso recycles 25% of all capsules sold and we hope to see that number increase with our efforts. To find out more about Nespresso’s recycling efforts, visit: www.nespresso.com/uk/en/recycling.

Electric Bikes We have added a further twenty electric bicycles to our postal delivery fleet, bringing the total number of electric bicycles to thirty-five.

The Pedego Stretch Cargo electric bicycles were first trialled earlier this year from local bike shop, Coop Bikes and following the success of the trial, we will begin phasing out the last of the traditional 3-geared postal bikes used on our 37 cycle-based delivery rounds.

The Pedego Stretch Cargo electric bicycles can carry up to 100lb of cargo, which helps improve delivery efficiency by allowing our posties to move heavier loads more quickly whilst still delivering on bikes.

“The electric bikes are a great addition to our fleet. With the increase of parcel volumes and lead up to Christmas, these eBikes will be able to support our postal workers and provide more timely deliveries by allowing them to take more volume and weight, especially on days with full, heavy postal rounds to deliver to.”

The new electric bicycles are already in use on postal rounds that feature large inclines such as Les Varines and Grouville Hill for example.

GO WILD GORILLAS The Project In celebration of their 60th anniversary, Durrell have collaborated with Wild in Art, an organisation that create mass participation art trails. Durrell’s trail takes you around the island to find 40 unique, life-size Silverback Gorillas decorated by artists from Jersey and around the world.

Alongside the 40 life-size Silverback gorilla sculptures is a troop of 45 ‘young gorillas’, decorated by local schools and community groups, which can be found in local shops and buildings.

The Aim This large-scale community project will bring together art and conservation to help raise funds for Durrell, in particular marking the launch of their fundraising efforts to create a much needed, state-of-the-art, new home to care for their beloved gorilla family.

Durrell is aiming to better connect one million people to nature by 2025, playing a role in creating ‘a wilder, healthier and more colourful world for future generations’.

Why Gorilla Gorillas are majestic, powerful yet gentle animals, and one of our closest living relatives. But they are in peril. Gorillas in the wild have been pushed to the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, hunting, wildlife trade and the spread of infectious disease.

Jersey Zoo has been home to these majestic apes for 60 years, successfully breeding them and training conservationists to protect these gentle giants. Go Wild Gorillas is a celebration of the remarkable work achieved at Jersey Zoo and in the wild to protect threatened species from extinction.

We are thrilled to have been involved in this incredible project, having sponsored ‘True Colours’ by artist Stuart Semple.

As a reward for anyone who finds True Colours and inputs his code into the app, we are giving away a free miniature stamp sheet of Jambo the Gorilla. Painted by stamp artist and conservationist, William Oliver, the Miniature Sheet celebrates Jersey’s world-famous & much loved silverback gorilla, Jambo.

Stuart Semple is a leading British artist, curator and activist.

His work often deals with accessibility and equality. Stuart is best known for his ‘Happy Cloud’ performance from Tate Modern and his performance piece ‘Pinkest Pink’ which questioned Anish Kapoor’s ownership of the blackest black. Stuart is an ambassador for Mind, the mental health charity and received a ‘Happiness Hero’ medal from the UN on the first international day of happiness in recognition for his commitment to happiness.

To celebrate his appreciation for gorillas and the beauty of this magnificent animal, Stuart has created a super-colourful, rainbow gorilla that catches your eye and draws you in.

Rainbows are rare and magical, and to Stuart gorillas are the same – natural magic that needs to be respected, loved and supported.

DRAGON BOAT RACING & MARATHON RELAY Dragon Boat Racing We were thrilled to have a team entered into the Condor Ferries’ Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday 21st September.

15 members of staff from across the company donned their finest Hawaiian shirts and hula skirts to take part in the event and raise money for Jersey Hospice, raising a total over £700!

Processing Team The A.M. tipping team are responsible for emptying and processing all of the vans that return from the airport with the mail from Royal Mail, starting as early as 05:00 to process the mail for the posties to deliver that day. They are also responsible for processing the Amazon and Royal Mail containers, which can have up to 10,000 packets loose loaded, all of which has to go through the Packet Sort Machine.
