ISSUE THREE 12/19
Season’s greetings and best wishes for a Merry Christmas from Jersey Post!
ISSUE THREE 12/19
It’s that time of year again, and we’ve been planning for Christmas since mid-September! This involves everything from recruiting 24 extra staff, hiring 15 more vans and ordering an extra 100,000 ‘Sorry we missed you’ cards.
ISSUE THREE 12/19
OPERATIONS UPDATE THE LEAD UP TO CHRISTMAS We’ve created extra parking for customers collecting parcels at Rue de Pres, and we’ve even arranged for our canteen to be open on Saturdays to feed our posties who are working extra hard to make sure islanders receive their Christmas mail and parcels. Black Friday is later than normal this year and we are forecasting that parcel volumes will double in number during December. This means our posties will be working until midnight to process incoming mail for delivery the next day. We also have contingency plans to process and, if necessary, deliver on Sundays to cope with the increased volume. We hope to encourage Islanders to help us cope with the extra work by ordering and posting early and signing up for our free mail delivery options, such as secure drop or parcel lockers, and by collecting any missed parcels early from Rue des Pres, rather than delaying and causing a big backlog.
We’re looking forward to welcoming all those who have registered to attend our Christmas Open Day, and we’re also busy making sure all the letters that the young - and not-so-young! - have written to Santa get to him on time!
Thanks in advance for all the hard work you all put in during this festive period. Niall McClure Managing Director, Postal and Logistics

CHRISTMAS UPDATES CHRISTMAS JUMPER FRIDAYS
CHRISTMAS ROAST DINNERS
We’re making every Friday in December, leading up to Christmas, Christmas Jumper Day!
Don’t forget, each Wednesday and Thursday in December leading up to Christmas we will be serving Christmas Roast Dinner in the canteen between 12:00 – 1:30pm.
That’s the 6th, 13th and 20th. So, it’s time to dig out your colourful Christmas jumpers and get yourselves feeling festive! If you get too hot in jumpers, Christmas shirts and smart tops are also acceptable. To take part, we’re asking for a minimum donation of £2 each Friday, as a festive way to raise some final donations for our chosen charity, the JSPCA.
DECK THE DESKS COMPETITION Also during the run up to Christmas, we’ll be holding a ‘Deck Your Desk’ competition! Bring in some of your spare decorations and get creative at your desk. We spend a lot of time at the office, so why not put some effort into decorating our desks? Enter individually or better yet, come up with a team theme; think Santa’s grotto, ginger bread house etc. It’s a great way to spread festive cheer and lighten the mood. A prize for the best decorated desk will be awarded by Tim who will judge the desks week commencing 16th December. And yes, our clean desk policy still applies!
That’s Wednesday 4th, Thursday 5th, Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th, Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th December. Please, make sure you book a table with Silvio in advance if there are more than 6 of you.
CARDS FOR STAFF We hope you’ve all received your Jersey Post Christmas card now, complete with 25 local stamps and 25 UK stamps, perfect for sending out your own Christmas cards! You will also have received a lottery ticket – fingers crossed one of our Jersey Post staff wins big! Good luck ;)
SANTA LETTERS If you’ve got kids, don’t forget to post their letters to Santa so that we can deliver them to him and make sure he writes back! No stamp required, just pop the letter in any post box around the island, or the special post boxes at Rue des Pres or Broad Street.

JERSEY POST AWARDED GUEST OF HONOUR AT PRESTIGIOUS PARIS STAMP EXHIBITION
Jersey Post has been named guest of honour at a prestigious stamp exhibition in Paris.
The Salon Philatélique d’Automne is an annual event, which, this year, took place from 7–9 November. The guest of honour accolade is one of the highest cultural distinctions awarded in France on behalf of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron. James Dann, our Philatelic Artwork and Production Executive, accepted the honour at the opening ceremony of the exhibition in the presence of senior members of the French government, La Poste, philatelic press, philatelic dealers and associations.
ISSUE THREE 12/19
We are absolutely delighted to receive this honour. Every year, Jersey Post endeavours to deliver a quality and innovative stamp programme and this year has been a particularly special year for us as we celebrate 50 years of postal independence. We’re extremely proud of the work that we do and Jersey Post’s contribution to philately and we’re thrilled to be recognised at the Salon Philatelique d’Automne, a leading event in the philatelic calendar.
Every year, prior to the Salon Philatélique d’Automne, philatelic professionals and collectors come together to choose the stamp they consider to be the best stamp issued by the guest of honour country during the last two years, taking into consideration subject matter, cultural significance, design and technicality.
This year, the judges chose the Miniature Sheet from Jersey Post’s 2018 issue Popular Culture – The 1960s, which was illustrated by Malcolm English, an award-winning designer and illustrator, and designed by Hat-Trick Design. The Salon Philatelique d’Automne is organised by the CNEP (La Chambre syndicale française des Négociants et Experts en Philatélie) and takes place at the Paris Expo - Espace Champerret. We had a stand at the exhibition on which Theodore Champion represented us.

POSTEUROP In October, we welcomed over 150 postal industry professionals from over 52 European postal administrations to Jersey for the international PostEurop Plenary Assembly.
The annual event is one of the largest recurring events for PostEurop, the member-driven association which has represented European public postal operators since 1993. PostEurop serves to support and develop a sustainable and competitive European postal communication and logistics market that is accessible to all customers and ensures a modern universal service.
“We are incredibly proud to have been chosen to host the PostEurop Plenary Assembly – not just because of the significance of the event within the industry, but also to be able to demonstrate Jersey’s ability, as well as its beauty, to host large events and to perform at the same level as larger, perhaps more obvious, cosmopolitan city choices,” Tim Brown Chief Executive
ISSUE THREE 12/19
The event itself ran over three days with different meetings and topics being discussed and debated each day. The Business Innovation Forum on Thursday 10 October focussed on future innovations and had a keynote from our own Digital Director, Lee Bosio, on the importance of brand leverage. A selected number of start-ups that drive convenience in eCommerce services and facilitate new services through technology including artificial intelligence, automation and robotics gave pitches. The main meeting of the three days was the Plenary Assembly, from which the event takes its name, and this provided attendees with strategic insights into current postal trends, regulatory issues in the industry and discussion around new market analysis.
Botond Szebeny, Secretary General of PostEurop said,“The majority of our members have never been to Jersey, so we are delighted to be holding this important annual event in such a unique and beautiful location.”
“The event is always well attended by notable representatives from our industry and the agenda we have planned is set to be an excellent mix of industry trends, developments and enhancements through technology and key regulatory matters.” Botond Szebeny Secretary General of PostEurop

JERSEY STAMPS A CHILDREN’S NATIVITY PLAY
Designed by Sharif Tarabay If you ask anyone about their strongest school memories from the Christmas season, chances are the nativity play will get a mention. This year our Christmas stamps pay tribute to this time honoured tradition. Every Christmas, schoolchildren around the world perform the story of the nativity of Jesus. In Jersey, as in other parts of the world, this is a much-loved part of the Christmas festivities, bringing together teachers, children, proud parents and grandparents and signalling the end of the school term and the start of the Christmas holiday.
and forgotten lines, angels attempting to straighten their wonky halos and shepherds trying to stop their felt beards from slipping down. Undoubtedly, there will be children whispering and giggling mischievously to one another during the performance, grinning and waving when they spot a parent in the audience or swinging their legs over the stage. There will be budding young actors who deliver their lines with confidence and enthusiasm and others who blush self-consciously, looking bashfully at their feet.
Customarily, nativity plays recreate the story of the night of Jesus’ birth with children playing the parts of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the three wise men. In recent times, the school nativity play has been modernised and re-imagined, incorporating traditional characters and songs as well as some more modern additions! Perhaps the most endearing parts of a nativity play are the ad-libs
Designed by Sharif Tarabay, this set of eight self-adhesive stamps has been designed to express the heart-warming humour of a school play. The illustrations on the stamps show the children’s delight and concentration whilst performing and at the same time, capture the emotional, often tear-jerking experience of being a proud member of the audience.

UPDATE ON 2019 PROJECTS • CHAT BOT Our new Chatbot is now live! The Chatbot is an automated software designed to solve customer queries online through preprogrammed conversations. If the Chat Bot is unable to answer the query it will automatically be directed to our Customer Care team. The Chatbot went live at the end of November, and is expected to reduce the volume of phone calls and call waiting times. For more information, contact Sarah Angell. • PARCEL LOCKER BANK SOFTWARE CHANGE We’re switching software providers before Christmas for the smaller locker banks and after for Broad Street and Rue des Pres. Downtime and impact to customers will be minimal and proactively managed. In 2019, we delivered on average 500+ items per week to our locker network. For more information, contact Anthony Kay. • NEW CUSTOMER ADVICE NOTE On the back of a business improvement project examining the inbound parcel delivery process, we will be introducing a new Customer Advice Note (CAN) to provide a simplified user experience for our customers and streamline the docket left process for postal operatives. By including a pre-printed 2D barcode on the CAN, we will no longer need to affix tracking numbers to items or CAN’s out in the field, saving time and minimising manual processing errors, plus cost-saving in the printing of barcode labels. This new process will be implemented in time for the Christmas peak.
Many thanks to everyone who entered our competition to name the Jersey Post Chatbot!

UPDATE ON 2020 PROJECTS SEAL THE PIPELINE (STP) Seal the Pipeline, or, as it’s more commonly known, STP, is designed to build a more modern and sustainable business, and to help deliver this a number of projects will be implemented during 2020 and 2021.

GO WILD GORILLAS 44 gorillas from the Go Wild Gorilla trail, including our own True Colours, went under the hammer at the Grand Gorilla Auction at The Royal Yacht on November 6th. It was a thrilling evening with plenty of bidding wars to keep everyone on their toes!
True Colours sold for an incredible £23,000, and the total amount raised at the auction was an astounding £1,146,500! We’re thrilled to have been a part of this wonderful, interactive campaign. The money raised is to be used to build a new enclosure for the gorillas at Jersey Zoo.

SPORTS MARATHON On Sunday 6th October, two teams from Jersey Post entered the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon Relay. It was a close race between the two teams, with Making The Rounds completing the course in 3:38:52, just beating the Digital team Lightning V, who finished in 3:41:02. Well done to both teams, and thank you to everyone who donated. We raised a total of £507.54 for the JSPCA.
CRICKET As Jersey Cricket’s main sponsor, we were captivated watching their recent entry in the T20 World Cup qualifiers. Here’s an update on it all from Jersey Cricket team member & our own Project Manager, Anthony Kay. Now that the dust has settled on Jersey’s adventure at the T20 World Cup qualifiers, we can reflect on what was a highly enjoyable and promising tournament for the 15 players and support staff that attempted to qualify for the World Cup next year in Australia. At the beginning of the tournament we had a certain amount of ‘British’ optimism that we could achieve something remarkable however following two comfortable wins in the warm up games against traditionally stronger opposition in Kenya and Singapore this begin to grow into something slightly more concrete within the team and also amongst the other teams in the competition. The victories against Oman and UAE showed that Jersey did truly belong on this stage with many teams commenting on the positive brand of cricket we play being particular impressive. When former England cricketer Rob Key, who was commentating for Sky Sports, was asked for his highlight of the qualifiers responded by saying the ‘Jersey victory against Oman’. Gaining recognition from players of this calibre is humbling for little old Jersey.
Ultimately, we fell slightly short of the goal with the loss against Hong Kong standing out particularly as an opportunity missed. We can however be proud of our performances and upon returning to Jersey, it was obvious that these had captured the attention of many Islanders. The most pleasing and exciting outcome from it all is the future of Jersey Cricket in both the immediate and longer term. The average age of the squad was 23, which did make me feel like a dinosaur, meaning that they will be moving towards their prime for the next edition of the tournament either 2 or 4 years’ time. Secondly, the number of children attending cricket coaching camps appears to be at an all-time high aspiring to be the next group to take Jersey Cricket forward whether locally or internationally. There is however no rest with the team heading back out to the Middle East at the end of November, with a 50 over tournament taking place in Oman and forms the first qualification hurdle for the 50 Over World Cup in 2023.

MEET THE TEAM PHILATELIC
Chris Elligott Philatelic Artwork & Production Manager 6 1/2 YEARS AT JERSEY POST
What’s your favourite stamp issue you’ve worked on? My favourite stamp issue worked on is the 2015 Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary issue – it won a D&AD (Design and Art Directors) award for graphic design, made it into the Creative Review Yearbook and was shortlisted in the Design Week Awards. Above all, being an aviation history nerd, researching, writing and art directing the issue was a bit of a labour of love for me.
David McGrath Head of Marketing & Philatelic 2 1/2 YEARS AT JERSEY POST
What’s your favourite stamp issue you’ve worked on? I would say the most stand out stamp issue for me this year has to be Man on the Moon 50th Anniversary – A 1969 Jersey Perspective. The stamps in this issue were illustrated by acclaimed aviation illustrator Keith Burns, who, with incredible attention to detail, has created a timeline of key stages in the mission. Stylised with a vintage effect, the stamp illustrations give a nod to the bygone era of the 1960s and incorporate the headlines from the Jersey Evening Post during the course of the mission, adding an authentic local angle to the issue. Not only were the completed stamps aesthetically pleasing, but they provided the exciting opportunity for Philatelic to make use of the artwork and branch out in to some special limited edition products in the form of fine art framed prints.
Angela Hamon Philatelic Research and Marketing Executive 1 YEAR AT JERSEY POST, HOW TIME FLIES!
What’s your favourite stamp issue you’ve worked on? My favourite stamp issue so far is Charles Dickens 1812-1870, the issue celebrates some of the writer’s greatest novels. It was one of the first stamp issues I had to research when I started here and I loved reading his work! I was able to pick out some of the most iconic moments from the books to feature on eight stamps and it’s been a really exciting process to see the artist, Mark Wilkinson, create his own vision of the scenes we’re portraying. The artwork manages to capture the overall tone of each novel and seeing the books come to life this way has been really rewarding. Look out for this stamp issue in June 2020!
ISSUE THREE 12/19
Rachel MacKenzie Philatelic Marketing Manager 5 1/2 YEARS AT JERSEY POST
What’s your favourite stamp issue you’ve worked on? Tough one! I suppose a standout issue would be the Frankenstein stamps, commemorating 200 years since the novel was first published. I love literature, particularly fiction, and so I really enjoyed rereading the novel and putting the brief together. It was an opportunity to get creative and to bring what is a hugely influential and really atmospheric story to life, especially as the issue included a lenticular Miniature Sheet. The agency we worked with, So Design, understood what we were trying to achieve from the start, incorporating both the Gothic and the Romantic tones of the novel, and the result is a really arresting and quite beautiful set of stamps. By contrast, I’m also a real sucker for Christmas and love working on all the Christmas issues!
James Dann Philatelic Artwork & Production Executive 3 YEARS AT JERSEY POST
What’s your favourite stamp issue you’ve worked on? My favourite stamp issue I’ve worked on is the Ancient Artefacts issue from 2017. It was the first stamp issue that was my responsibility from start to finish. I got to travel all over the island, visiting different museums and photographing pieces out of the display cases.
Astrid Harris Philatelic Administration Assistant 2 MONTHS AT JERSEY POST
What’s your favourite stamp issue you’ve worked on? This is a difficult one to answer because I haven’t really been here long enough to have worked on any of the stamp issues. However, I do particularly love the Christmas stamps from this year (2019), as I think the excitement and happiness of Christmas is captured really well in both the illustrations of the children’s expressions, as well as the bright colours and well-lit scenes that are depicted. They get me in the mood for Christmas already!

ECO - eTRAILERS During December, we’re beginning a three-week trial of a new, innovative eTrailer solution to increase delivery efficiencies and further reduce the organisation’s CO2 emissions. The number of bulky, heavier items being received for local delivery continues to grow at a dramatic rate, especially as the peak festive season rapidly approaches. Traditionally, these items would need to be delivered by an electric van, or a diesel van with higher carbon emissions, rather than by bicycle, which is the preferred method of transport for urban areas. Combined, these logistic and environmental challenges are leading delivery operators worldwide to alternative solutions that enable a larger payload and quicker delivery, as well as a reduced carbon impact. Manufactured by the German start-up company, NÜWIEL, the eTrailer is the first smart electric trailer for bikes. NÜWIEL was founded in 2016 with the vision to free cities from unnecessary car use, noise and air pollution. The eTrailer was designed to support this goal and can be connected to any bicycle or electric bike within seconds, carrying up to 150kg. Furthermore, the eTrailer can be disconnected from the bicycle and used as an electric handcart so that it can be used in pedestrianised areas and inside buildings, as well as on roads and cycle paths.
David McGrath and Paul Belhomme tested the trailers during a recent visit to Hamburg and were really impressed by them. Not only are they easy for the operator to use, but they are completely watertight and offer significantly greater capacity when compared to current methods. We are delighted to be working with such an innovative team of ecologically driven entrepreneurs and believe their eTrailer solution can really help to improve delivery methods locally, drive down costs and further reduce our CO2 emissions. Already being used in other industries by companies such as IKEA, the NÜWIEL trailers are also designed to be of benefit to the user. Each trailer uses patented technology that enables a fully synchronized motion between the bike and the eTrailer. This means that braking and accelerating is fully automatic, and the user makes no additional effort when cycling with the eTrailer. The eTrailers also have integrated suspension to protect the goods being transported from any potential damage during transit over bumpy roads, cobbles or up and down pavements.
The eTrailers will add to our existing electric fleet of 69 vans and 36 bikes, and if the trial is successful, more eTrailers will be introduced early in 2020.

However, as it was mid despatch, actually finding it, recalling it and sending it on a quicker flight wasn’t going to be easy... unless your name is Charles d’Avoine! After a few phone calls to the right people, Charles found a FedEx person in Stanstead who was willling to go and look for this small envelope amongst their masses of parcels and packages. Eureka, it was found, repackage and sent on it’s way. The client said Charles pulled out all the stops on this matter and responded so professionally. Thank You Charles, well done!
