WELCOME TO JERSEY STAMPS!

Welcome back to our second bulletin of the year. This issue dives into the Spring 2024 issues, including 150 Years of La Corbière

Lighthouse: First Lit 1874 illustrated by Martin Mörck who used the original blueprints of the lighthouse provided to Jersey Stamps by Jersey Archives.

Available within the first week of April ‘Jersey Western Railway’ illustrated by local artist Kevin Pallot, showcases Jersey’s railway past. The issue explores the landmarks, locomotives and crew from the western railway which existed between 1870 to 1936.

In late April, ‘150 Years of La Corbière

Lighthouse: First Lit 1874’ will be this year’s SEPAC issue. Illustrated by renowned stamp artist Martin Mörck, the issue commemorates 150 years since the lighthouse was first lit.

Jersey Stamps are delighted to announce the release of the new definitives featuring an evolution of the Crest of Jersey design with a fresh new colour pallette.

Included in this issue is the highly collectable £5 definitive stamp featuring Martin Mörck’s regal portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

Illustrated by SoDesign, the ‘Rotary Club Centenary’ issue commemorates 100 years since the formation of the local branch, depicting key initiatves and undertakings by the club that work to better the lives of others both locally and internationally.

Jersey Western Railway

Set of six stamps

Although not in operation commercially for over 85 years, the western railway formed much of the character of the west coast of the Island of Jersey and was a vital piece of the island’s infrastructure and way of life. Running along the south-west coast of the island from St Helier to La Corbière the route was developed and extended over several years to its final length of 7¾ miles.

The six stamps, featuring original artwork painted by local artist Kevin Pallot, depict some of the locomotives and a railcar that operated on the railway towards the end of the line’s working life, together with portraits of some of the crew that worked on the line at the time.

Set of five stamps

£8.33

To commemorate 150 years since it was first lit, Jersey Stamps are delighted to release SEPAC Iconic Tourist Destination: La Corbière Lighthouse First Lit – 150 Years. The issue tells the story of La Corbière lighthouse and its construction by engineer Sir John Coode 150 years ago.

The five stamp and miniature sheet issue is illustrated by reknowned Norwegian engraving artist Martin Mörck using the plans and first working drawings of the lighthouse and its development. Each of the five stamps illustrates the story of the lighthouse before, during and after its build. The miniature sheet features an extra technique whereby the beam of light depicted is UV spot ink, glow in the dark.

La Corbière lighthouse remains one of the most photographed landmarks in Jersey and is a popular tourist site for its panoramic views. In the evenings the surrounding area provides an ideal viewing point for sunsets.

The Island of Jersey has been a Crown dependency since 1204 and in 1279, the seal from which the Coat of Arms, or Crest of Jersey is derived, was granted to the Bailiff of Jersey by King Edward I. Hundreds of year later, it was recognised by the College of Arms that they held no record of this event, as the College was not incorporated until 1484. In 1907, the continued use of the Arms of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, ‘as previously granted’ was sanctioned by King Edward VII.

For ten of the values, a revised palette of colours has been evolved to represent King Charles III. The background field on which the crest is mounted features a watermark pattern made up of the names of the 12 parishes of Jersey. The eleventh definitive for the £5 tariff features the regal portrait of His Majesty recently featured on the Miniature Sheet of Jersey’s Coronation issue of November 2023. The portrait was created by acclaimed stamp engraver Martin Mörck, based on an original photograph by Mario Testino.

Artist Feature Norwegian Stamp Engraving Artist Martin Mörck

At 16, Martin enrolled in engraving evening classes, he also undertook a year of stone building, as he’d always had an interest in stone art. After a year spent on developing his stone building understanding, he undertook two years of art school, before leaving, confident that he had learnt all he wanted from the school.

After gaining a number of technical skills, Martin landed a job at the Swedish Post which gave him an understanding of the postal system, building both his artistic and philatelic skills. Ultimately, Martin’s goal was to pursue his art career full time, an aim that would need initial funding which led to a short but inspiring time working on a fishing trawler. Somewhat inevitably, Martin enrolled back into school, in order to learn how to build boats and vessels, fuelling his love of engraving ships and boats. As his father would say “Only two things in the world have to be created in perfect harmony, music and ships.”

Fast forwarding to the present day, Martins’s enduring love of engraving has formed the cornerstone of his celebrated artistic career, particularly within philatelic circles. Driven by a desire to keep the art alive, Martin is committed to engraving the original way eschewing digital methods in favour of traditional techniques, a process which Martin enjoys immeasurably and he believes may leave him the ‘last man standing’ in traditional terms.

When asked about his favourite subject matter, Martin describes a love of all things organic. From people to animals to ships; Martin loves expressing life through his chosen art style and takes great pride in bringing all of the little characters and quirks of the subjects into full light.

It’s always a delight for Jersey Post to work with Martin Mörck, and we look forward to having his input in many future issues. Keep an eye out for an issue in 2024 once again featuring Martin Mörck’s unique engraving style and a captivating thematic!

Rotary Club Centenary

Set of six stamps

Jersey Stamps are delighted to celebrate The Rotary Club Centenary in 2024 with a six stamp issue highlighting the clubs initiatives within local and international communities. Rotary aims to support the less fortunate by bringing business and professional leaders together to help those in need to help themselves.

The stamp issue features illustrations by the Bristol-based multidisciplinary graphic design agency SoDesign using Rotary’s worldwide projects as inspiration.

The local 60p stamp shows a team undertaking conservation work on the sand dunes in Jersey’s Les Mielles, reducing invasive species. The first 98p stamp shows the building of sand dams in Kenya which help to collect clean rain water of which the benefits are numerous for local people.

Depicted on the £1.65 stamp is the renowned Polio-Plus campaign from which cases of the disease have reduced from around 350,000, eventually recording no new cases of polio in 2015.
