CENTRAL SIRES

INVESTING IN THE JERSEY BREED.

The Central Gippsland Jersey breeders club needs to be acknowledged for its foresight in advancing the Jersey breed in Australia. The On Farm Challenge Competition was initially developed by this club some 21 years ago and has now expanded right across Australia. The concept has proved so successful that other breeds have now adopted the model.

At a club discussion group about 20 years ago, members decided that we needed to improve the quality of young bulls being progeny tested. Central Sires Inc was formed with members purchasing shares and electing a committee to the run the group. This later became the Co-op. Initially each year a young bull was selected, with most of his semen being distributed between Central Sires members.

Club discussion groups took on a new dimension as daughters sired by these bulls entered member’s herds.

The real turning point for Central Sires was the formation by 3 club members of the BIE Syndicate. Barry Monson, Ivan Grant, and Eric Johnson imported a number of embryo’s from North America with the key objective being to develop new cow families (Babe, and Hattie), and introduce young sires capable of influencing the breed here in Australia.

BIE Bistar was selected and progeny tested by Central Sires, and when he returned to service following the outstanding performance of his test daughter group the Co-op was on its way. The BIE syndicate members are now enjoying retirement, are still actively involved in club activities, and take much pride in where Central Sires has positioned itself today, as a provider of premium quality genetics for all Jersey Breeders.

Many people have dedicated time and resource in building the Co-op to where it is today, and should be proud of the contribution that they have made. The recent success of Central Sires has only been made possible by many people thriving to make a difference.

These days, the six directors represent a membership still concentrated in Victoria, mainly Gippsland, with other members in SA NSW and Tasmania.

Central Sires Secretary Ian Anderson said: “We don’t want to revolutionise the world, after all, we have our own businesses to run. But we know the bulls that have been successful, and have had a great impact on the breed here in Australia.”

Biestar, Goldglo and Faxall were among those bulls, as was the all-too-brief reign of CSC Navara, a potentially premium sire that did not return to active service. There was a limited quantity of CSCNavara semen available which the board along with our partners ABS Australia needed to decide how it should be used. We as a board believed that the semen should be distributed widely to benefit the breed with our Co-op members having a

priority access. His impact on the breed will be seen in the years to come with all active AI companies in Australia currently progeny testing his sons.

We look to the future with confidence with the current crop of young bulls creating interest in Australia and abroad.” CSC Ambition has being fully allocated this spring, with semen now being collected so that he can be dual sampled between here and the UK,” said Central Sires chair Kevin Collins. The next 6 months will see the release of a TBone brother to Elton, CSCNavara brother to Lafalot, and a CSCNavara son of Wallacedale Jace Melaine 4.

Central Sires is currently negotiating a deal with Jersey Australia that could see a full online pedigree service available for breeders. Kevin explained:” This is an exciting project that can provide members and associated parties a greater level of access to the Jersey Australia database” The total sponsorship deal will also see a range of branded merchandise, brochures and calendar all promoting the interests of the Jersey breed.

Jersey Australia executive officer Scott Joynson welcomed the contribution, saying: “These are important projects that will help lift the profile of the breed and the breeders.”Central Sires will be helping

The co-op has hit the good times – and is keen to share the benefits. Ian explained: “In many years throughout the co-op’s history there’s been no return to the members, but they have always shown great support. Now, we’re really fortunate that the co-op has come to that point that it has the top-selling bull. We can reward back to our shareholders and also reward back to the whole Jersey industry in Australia. We’re in a situation where we’re able to support wider Jerseybased functions; we’re really supporting grass roots participation.

What are the traits of a Central Sires bull?

Kevin replied: “The main thing we look for is the cow family. We don’t have to push our bulls, people see the pedigrees of our bulls and they want to use them.

We believe that to secure our position Central Sires needs to expand its membership base. If breeders have a passion for the Jersey Breed, support progeny testing, and want to develop the next generation of proven sires, then they should make application to Central Sires for one share with a par value of $50.

Breeders should also have confidence in offering young bulls to Central Sires first, as we offer very attractive and flexible contract agreements.

YOUTH PROFILE - Gavin Broad

Getting a broad experience of presenting cows for show

By Sue Webster Gavin Broad can’t remember his first significant interaction with a Jersey cow, but knows that there have been manygrowing up on his parents’ Jersey farm.

Gavin, 16, is the second child of Lisa and Lynton Broad, who run Broadlin Jerseys, a 170 hectare property ay in Lockingtonin northern Victoria. The family milks about 200 Jerseys and six Holsteins.

Gavin clearly remembers when he started to started to enjoy working with Jerseys – when he first led one of his parent’s heifers at International Dairy Week in 2007.

“My cow was supposed to be better than the one Mum was presenting and Dad thought that I would win,” said Gavin.

“But Mum was able to lead the cow better and make the cow stand in a way to best display her features.

“She won the champion heifer and I realised there was more to presenting a cow that just walking around a ring,” he said.

This realisation has led to Gavin taking more of an interest in getting the family’s cows ready for the show ring and presenting them to their advantage.

“I started preparing all the family’s show cows about a year ago,” he said. “Mum and Dad still choose most of the cows but recently I am also having an input.”

Gavin currently works on the dairy farm on his own about one weekend a month, when his parents go away. But it is not the running of the farm that interests him, it is working with the show cows.

“I start by working with the weaned calves and heifers,” said Gavin. “First I teach them to tie-up and lead. If you tie them up for a while, then take them to water or some nice food, they soon get the hang of leading.

“Next I work on teaching them to walk slowly with their heads up and then to stand properly. I do all the washing, clipping and preparing thetopline. Mum and Dad still help with the feeding, but I am learning about that, too,” said Gavin.

When the opportunity came up for Gavin to present some cows for Nathan Chilcott in Tasmania, Gavin jumped at the opportunity.

“It was a great experience. I have never presented for anyone but the family before that. I was away for 10 days and I learnt a few new things, like how to udder-up before a show. Of course Mum and Dad know these things, but sometimes it is easier to learn from someone else,” said Gavin.

“It was an added bonus that the cow was one Nathan had bought from our farm, so I felt quite proud about the win,” said Gavin.

He said that while he likes working with Jerseys, it is more than just their good looks that he values.

“Jerseys are good producers of protein and fat,” he said. “I like Holsteins, but I don’t think they produce enough components to make up for their size and their additional feed requirements due to that size.

“I think the Jersey is a better choice in terms of profit for the farm.”

Currently, completing year 10 at Rochester Secondary College, Gavin is not a keen student, but “will stick it through to year 12.”

“I think I will work with Mum and Dad on the farm for a few years after that, but ultimately would like to get my own farm,” said Gavin. “I want the kind of dairy farm that makes people interested enough to come and visit.

“They can come, see the livestock and the quality and hopefully buy some. I will make a profit, and with the quality of the cow I hope to produce, so will they.”
