FROM THE FRONT DESK

At the close of nominations for the Board this year we once again had insufficient nominations to fill the vacant position or more importantly, require an election to enable the membership to voice their voting rights on who you believe is most appropriate to govern the Association.

With this being the third year in succession we have not received the required number of candidates, I would like to seek some feedback from the membership relating to a) what is it that holds members back from nominating to the Board and b) what more can Jersey Australia do to help develop future leaders of the Association.

The historical pathways via our grass roots clubs are no longer producing the National leaders that we need.

Jersey Australia is actively seeking opportunities for leadership programs for members to participate in to support member personal development and over the last 3 years have put in place sub-committees to provide opportunities for members to engage members in our Board processes as a steppingstone to the Board.

The alternative to not being able to gain sufficient ongoing member support to govern the Association is to seek to reduce the size of the Board.

Thank You Brian

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Brian Wilson for his support, advice, guidance, and the occasional clip over the ear as he steps down from the Board at this AGM. Brian has been a strong positive voice on the Board, a great mentor and most importantly a great leader for the Association. Brian will be greatly missed at Board level.

Best Regards

61st Jersey Fair

On Tuesday 4th of April, a beautiful Autumn day greeted a big crowd of onlookers in attendance to watch the 61st Annual Central Gippsland Jersey Fair unfold.

Our judge, Mr Lachlan Fry of Katandra Park Jerseys, had the box seat to what was a high class show with depth of quality right down the line. Numbers for the show were up, with 80 head and over 100 class entries from exhibitors travelling from all parts of the state.

A huge thank you must go out to two great supporters of our show. Firstly our sponsors who enable us to put together a show which

our exhibitors love to attend and also a show that helps put the Australian Jersey cow on display. Secondly to our amazing exhibitors who continue to come to the show year after year, without you both, the Central Gippsland Jersey Fair would not be what it is today!

Lastly thank you to the incredible hard working organising team and our volunteers who help put the show together both prior and on show day!

Come join us all at next years Jersey Fair, it is sure to be just as big and just as brilliant!

DAIRY’S FINEST ON DISPLAY

THE ORGANISERS OF THE 2023 DAIRY’S FINEST SALE SAY THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO MARKET JERSEY COWS AND GENETICS. – AND THIS YEAR’S SALE WILL REFLECT THE QUALITY OF AUSTRALIAN JERSEYS.

JERSEY

Australia’s Dairy’s Finest showcase sale will be on Wednesday May 24 as part of the annual conference at Coffs Harbour. The auction will be online in person and conducted by Dairy Livestock Services (DLS) auctioneer Brian Leslie.

Joint sale managers Mitchell Flemming and Daniel Bacon say the catalogue will feature high-quality, all-round depth.

“It looks incredible,” Daniel said. “We’ve got exceptional lots from most states, from really nice milking cows out of big-time pedigrees to calves with high genomics.”

“There’s something for everybody.” At this stage there will be 32 lots in the sale, a slight increase on the previous two years.

“It’s set to be our biggest Dairy’s Finest sale which is off the back of successful sales the last two years,” Daniel said.

“The marketability of Jerseys is continuing to grow.”

As first-time sale managers, Daniel and Mitchell have been pleasantly surprised by how it has come together.

“Actually, it has been pretty easy,” Daniel. “Most breeders have put their best foot forward because the results over the past few years have been exceptional so they are keen to be involved.

“We’ve had lots of breeders getting in contact with us, we haven’t had to chase them.

“The market is as hot as ever which has been proven at the Royal Sydney Show. It’s a great time to be marketing your Jerseys, that’s for sure.”

It’s also turned out to be an enjoyable task, mainly involving ringing vendors and chasing pedigrees.

“It’s something I like doing – talking to dairy breeders about what they’ve got,” Daniel said.

Daniel doesn’t want to highlight specific lots but says the sale

“We’ve got daughters of show champions, high BPI animals and imported pedigree and the daughter of the record price animal from 2021.”

managers are impressed with the depth and overall quality.

“We’ve got daughters of show champions, high BPI animals and imported pedigrees and the daughter of the record price animal from 2021,” he said.

“There are a lot of very nice lots, not necessarily one that will push a record price but we are confident there will be a very good sale average.

“We are very excited by the group that we’ve put together.”

MERLES SHOW THE WAY

Whenever Susan Morrison (pictured below) shows a team of cows, a Merle is always prominently on display.

So, it’s no surprise that her first entry in Jersey’s Finest sale is from the Merle family.

I bought her grandmother from a clearance sale about 2012

“The Merle family has done well for me on my farm at Wingham near Taree and every time I show I have a

Merle in my team and they’ve all won at Sydney,” Susan said. Susan bought the heifer’s grandmother from a clearance sale in 2012 and her mother and grandmother have both won their class at Sydney. But,

importantly, it’s not just about show. “They’re all good milkers as well,” Susan said.

“We have other good families. I won at Sydney with a Zara cow but think the Merle family is a better family. The Zara cow never bred anything as good as herself whereas the Merle family keeps on breeding good cows that are among the best on the farm.”

Susan is constantly impressed by her Jerseys. “The Merles are easy to work with and have good temperaments. I’ve only got a small 100-acre farm and I like the Jerseys. They don’t consume as much and they’re quite productive.”

RECORD BREAKER’S OFFSPRING

Declan Patten is hoping for a case of good double trouble with his star lot in the 2023 Jersey’s Finest sale.

We’re proud supporters of the Australian dairy industry

We’re an agribusiness bank. And in the spirit of Rabobank’s cooperative heritage, we are committed to supporting the Jersey Australia Conference.

SALE PREVIEW

Declan’s heifer Lightning Ridge RK Bashful Lovelies will be one of the main attractions in the catalogue after her dam, Brookbora Chrome Lovelies, achieved the top price of $20,000 at the inaugural Jersey’s Finest sale in 2021.

That sale broke the Australian record at the time with the highest price for an unjoined Australian-bred heifer, a record that stands today.

Her stellar pedigree goes deeper as Declan purchased her grand dam privately for what is believed to be the fourth highest price in Australia.

“She’s won a lot of awards and show records and has been a dominant show cow in Australia for the past few years,” he said.

Completing the picture, she is from an Australian bull, Bashful from Robert and Kerrie Anderson’s Kingsville stud.

“I saw the mother of Bashful when Rob and Kerrie had a farm walk at the 2021 sale. I saw her in the herd and she stood out as a cow I really liked and now we’ve gone and used the bull.

“It was nice to buy the Chrome, see the mother of Bashful and go full circle and sell the daughter.

“She was born in July 2022, a perfect age for showing, and she’s doubling

up with two great cow families.” Declan is confident there will be strong interest in Lightning Ridge RK Bashful Lovelies.

“The market is strong and we’re excited to see how she sells.”

MORE DISPERSALS

Warren Burley held a dispersal sale last December but kept a group of young heifers including two that will feature in the Dairy’s Finest auction.

“We retained our younger heifers pre-mating age and the two we have in the sale are both high quality and out of good cow families,” Warren said.

Valentino Del’s mother is ranked 92, grandmother 91, great-grandmother 92 who also gave 68,000 litres so a high-producing cow. As a two-yearold, her mother produced more than 6000 litres

Virat Delvarina is out of an 89-point cow but has at least three generations behind her of 90-92-point Excellent cows.

“Both are from high-producing families,” Warren said. “They’re both nice heifers and I believe they should sell well.”

It is the first time Warren has entered Jersey’s Finest.

“I wanted to support it because it’s in our area. I’m semi-retired now but we’re still doing beef and I have about 50 Jerseys heifers.”

Warren’s farm is 3km from Dorrigo and has been in the family for almost 70 years and he has a platinum average herd.

“The last time I looked before our sale, our herd average was around 7000 litres with the typically high Jersey components,” he said.

The December dispersal sale average was more than $4000

STRENGTH ON SHOW

SIMON ATKINS WILL HAVE THE STRENGTH OF HIS OAKLEIGH DOWNS JERSEYS ON DISPLAY DURING THIS YEAR’S JERSEY AUSTRALIA ANNUAL CONFERENCE.

SIMON’S farm will be on the tour itinerary and his cows will show their owner’s breeding priorities for overall strength, sound feet and legs and well attached udders that last.

“I like cows with good strength and the ability to milk,” Simon said. “I like my cows with plenty of power and longevity.”

Simon will be the third-generation dairying on the 100-ha farm on the Dorrigo plateau.

“My Pop and grandma bought it back in 1964. My dad then bought it off them and continued to dairy and now here I am,” he said.

The farm isn’t all Jersey, but Simon’s favourite breed is starting to take control.

“The Jerseys are taking over,” he said. The rest of the herd is made up of Holsteins, Brown Swiss and a few cross-breds.

“I’ve always loved jerseys for as long as I can remember,” Simon said.

“I actually started out owning and showing a Holstein heifer that I was gifted, but not long after I purchased my first jersey heifer and didn’t look back.”

He has been slowly selecting Australian families and imported

families from overseas. Some of his prominent Australian families include Charo, Lovelies, Pie, Dainty, Vanessa, Secret, Jess, Moya, while imported families are headed by Myra and Vixx.

The farm calves year-round and has a pasture-based feeding system with silage fed during winter.

Oakleigh Downs Jerseys has shown cows at local shows for several years but in recent years has started showing at International Dairy Week, Sydney Royal and the jersey state show “after getting to know some great people in the industry who have really helped me along”.

TIME TO STEP ASIDE

BRIAN WILSON RECKONS IT’S A GOOD TIME TO STEP BACK AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE ON THE JERSEY AUSTRALIA BOARD.

WITH the breed riding a new high and the Board and organisation in good shape, Brian says the time is right for a younger person to take on the challenge.

“Jersey Australia is in a good position with a good general manager and a strong Board,” he said.

“I think 10 years is long enough and it’s time to get a younger member on there that’s keen to make a difference.”

Only the current president Lisa Broad stands alongside Brian from when he joined the Board, and he has worked with four different presidents and three general managers over the decade.

“We’ve had a big turnover with some of the more experienced members leaving in recent years but the current members have been there for a few years and they are going well,” he said.

“I’d definitely recommend standing for the Board if you want to discuss the direction the Jersey cow is going. Being on the board is the best way to have an input. If you’re passionate about the Jersey cow, it’s very rewarding.”

Brian, the current vice-president, followed his father Lindsay, a past president, onto the board. “I knew a bit about it because my father had been on the Board and had been president,” he said.

“I knew from dad’s experience that it took a bit of time but I hadn’t thought about it until I was asked by the then president Trevor Saunders to fill a casual vacancy for 12 months. I

decided I would and after those 12 months I stood for election and got on.

“I was always passionate about the Jersey breed, that’s why I decided to do it, and I thought I could have a positive impact by helping out.”

The Board has dealt with countless issues over the years and while Brian doesn’t want to highlight any standouts, discussions often revolved around classification. “Classification is always on the agenda and it’s something members are very passionate about,” he said. “The people that go on the Jersey Australia board are passionate about the Jersey cow and that’s why it keeps coming up.”

Finances have also been centre of attention. “It’s always a big battle to try to balance the books without charging members too much for the services we provide, but I think it is good value. It’s well worth becoming a member and registering your cows. I believe you get a premium for registered Jersey cows, especially at the moment with Jerseys being on a bit of a high over the past few years.”

Brian says JA’s marketing campaign to highlight the profitability of Jerseys has been a winner.

“I think they are the most profitable cow and that Jersey Australia has

“I think they [Jerseys] are the most profitable cow and that Jersey Australia has done a lot of good work in getting that message out and it has been paying off.”

done a lot of good work in getting that message out and it has been paying off.”

Although stepping down from the Board, Brian has no plans to retire from farming or his Shirlinn Jerseys stud and their processing company Peel Valley Milk.

“We’ve been on our farm at Tamworth for 21 years and milk 200 Jerseys year-round and process our own milk for Peel Valley Milk. “We’re still heavily involved with the Shirlinn Stud and Peel Valley Milk and I’m on a few other committees so there’s plenty to do.”

Brian thanked his family for supporting him over the past decade. “I wouldn’t have been able to serve the 10 years without the support of my family, especially my wife Vicki,” he said.

“Now we’d like a bit more time to spend with our eight grandkids and to travel.”

President Lisa Broad thanked Brian for his 12 years of service to the board.

“Brian has been a well-respected director providing unrelenting passion for the Jersey breed,” Lisa said.

“Brian has led numerous leadership positions and chaired subcommittees and has a huge impact on Jersey Australia and the breed.”

JOINT VENTURE WILL INCREASE PROFILE OF AUSTRALIAN JERSEYS

THERE HAS BEEN A GREAT DEAL OF EXCITEMENT AT GENETICS AUSTRALIA (GA) WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF A JOINT VENTURE (JV) WITH URUS, A GLOBAL LEADER IN PRODUCTS AND SERVICES FOR DAIRY AND BEEF PRODUCERS AND THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY RELEASE OF THE AUSTRALIAN BREEDING VALUES.

Aseries of meetings, webinars and in person visits with URUS CEO Paul Hunt, Genex CEO Huub te Plate and GA Management and Board in April provided answers to a lot of questions from GA members about the JV, and the plan is for it to be operational by 1st July this year.

URUS is based in the United States and is servicing more than 80 countries with brands such as GENEX, ALTA Genetics, PEAK, and Trans Ova amongst many others. By joining with URUS, Australian dairy producers will have access to market leading global genetics, technology

that could not be achieved by GA on its own. GA will now have access to greater global markets for its Australian bred and sourced bull lineup.

Australian Jerseys are widely regarded as being the best available globally and while already a growing part of GA genetic exports the JV will open greater market access to regions such as Latin America, Central and South Africa as well as emerging markets in Pakistan and India.

The 40th ABV release was again dominated by Australian bred bulls with GA bulls at the fore. ARDENT at $431 BPI emerged as the number 1 BPI and Production Jersey, now with his first few milking daughters contributing to his ABV. Now dispersed, the Bercar herd of Bernie and Carol McManus will continue to contribute to the quality of Australian Jerseys with stablemate BESTYET also adding a few milking daughters and is now $361 BPI.

The highest Australian Jersey bull for HWI is Wallacedale PICKLE at

347 HWI while Wallacedale STARK PP at $311 is the highest homozygous Polled Jersey available. For longevity the internationally popular ASKN is the highest bull at 114 while for bulls over 80% reliable While Star Jerseys take out the BPI trifecta with DOUGGAN $376, DOBSON $329 and VALENBLAST $329 being the top three bulls.

For full details on the 2023 Jersey line up visit www.genaust.com.au or contact your usual GA semen supplier.

April 2023 ABV Release – Bull ABVs

It is good to reflect on bulls starting to gain their initial proven proof in the April 2023 release and review where they started in August 2019. While its somewhat difficult to compare BPI from 2019 as there was a fundamental change in the BPI formula in 2020 the below table compares the top 10 genomic bulls from August 2019 to their current proof. The majority of young bulls in 2019 have gone on to remain as top BPI bulls in 2023.

Australian Breeding Values

The advent of genomics has enabled our world leading scientists to deliver new and different traits particularly in areas of sustainability and management. These include traits such as Heat Tolerance and Feed Saved and the recently released Sustainability Index.

Heat Tolerance

✓ The Heat Tolerance ABV provide guidance on which bulls daughters are more likely to tolerate a heat event with less impact on milk production. The research for this trait identified cows can be impacted by a heat event of temperatures around 25 degrees with 40% humidity. With southern cooler regions like Tasmania experiencing something like 150 days per year with temperatures of at least 25 degrees with the 40% humidity, maximising your herds production by using heat tolerant sires is something that can aid benefit in all dairy regions. Select bulls with an ABV above 100 to improve heat tolerability in your herd.

Gestation Length

✓ Shortening the calving interval in your herd can be aided by using short gestation bulls. The Gestation Length ABV indicates a bull whose calves are born earlier or longer than expected. Use the ABV to select bulls with a negative Gestation Length ABV if you wish to shorten the gestation period. Each ABV point equates to approximately 1 day shorter or longer than expected gestation period.

Feed Saved ABV

✓ The Feed Saved ABV identifies animals who can save you money on dry matter intake per cow per year while maintaining milk production. A cow with a Feed Saved ABV of 50 would indicate the cow requires 25kg of dry matter less to produce the equivalent amount of milk.

✓ For those with mixed breed herds, it is important to recognise there is differences with how the ABV is generated for Hoslteins and Other Breeds. The ABV for Holstein is calculated using Residual Feed Intake (RFI) only available from a genomic evaluation. Jersey and all other breeds use bodyweight to calculate the trait.

✓ Feed Saved is also excluded from the BPI for Jersey. Animals with a Feed Saved ABV of greater than zero would typically be smaller in sized. Removing Feed Saved was sought and achieved to reduce the impact of breeding smaller cows which was a historical breed problem. This does not mean that the Association is seeking a larger cow either and we encourage farmers to manage this through their bull selection.

Malanda All Breeds Dairy Youth Camp

Jersey Australia was a proud supporter of the AllBreeds Educational Dairy Youth Camp recently held at Malanda through the Jersey Australia Community Grants Fund. 40 young dairy youth aged from 1017 attended the camp where the attendees were schooled in show ring craft under the tutelage of Kelvin Cochrane, Paul Newland, Colin Daley and Phil Hentschke.

The camp also provided a broader education program on first aid and mobile phone use safety from the local police and ambulance service, Anthony Ball spoke to the group on industry careers providing an insight to the group on his journey from exhibiting heifers in his youth to a career as a successful auctioneer and rounded out with the local snake catcher and a selection of local snakes and snake handling.

Camp participants were required to train, clip and parade their heifer before their family, friends and the judge with RASCHCODA MATT CANDY being crowned Supreme Champion Heifer with Erin Burtenshaw and Mary English being awarded Joint Overall Student of the camp.

Jersey Australia congratulates all students, organisers and leaders on a successful camp.
