FROM THE FRONT DESK

Itrust everyone enjoyed a great Christmas and New Year and an opportunity to spend some quality time with family and friends.

As we look forward to the year ahead, we have some exciting things ahead for Jersey Australia. IDW is always a great way to start the year and a great opportunity to catch up with members and friends. We wish members the very best who are exhibiting, and we look forward to celebrating the champions in the ring. JA will have our popular Jersey milk coffees all week and look out for the Board and staff delivering donuts and coffees to the sheds on Wednesday morning. Judging starts Tuesday afternoon with the heifers with the milk cows on Wednesday morning.

The burgeoning markets in Pakistan are and a big growth opportunity and we are proud to support this with an in country visit in later January and we are also hopeful of market access opening up into India. There is a jersey population in India and industry is working hard to establish export protocols so exports opportunities can start to be realised.

The Beautizone club is hosting the AGM and Conference at Coffs Harbour and Dorrigo between May 22nd and 25th 2023. This is a great event that brings members together from across the country and the club has some great farm and local attraction visits planned as well as the Dairy’s Finest Sale and AGM and Awards Dinner.

Our office and classification staff will again be busy meeting your needs. In what so far been one of our best years for registrations and class, we will strive hard to set this level of service for the coming year as well. Our field officer has been doing a great job in the field having signed up a large number of new members and we have established five herds through a full GR program to begin their journey with the Association and I encourage all members to reach out and engage these new members with clubs locally.

Best Regards

Glen Barrett General Manager

Changes To Animal Identification

The Board of Jersey Australia (JA) has reviewed the current ID requirements and have implemented a change effective from December 2022.

Currently all animals are required to be identified with either a tattoo or metal tag containing both the Tattoo prefix and ID number.

The new identification rules will 2 of either a Primary ID and a Secondary ID with at least one form of ID being a Primary ID.

The Tattoo Prefix will now be known as the BREEDER IDENTIFCIATION

PREFIX (BIP) and the Tattoo Number will now be known as the BREEDER

IDENTIFCATION NUMBER (BIN)

A Primary ID may be either

• Tattoo

• Metal Tag

• JA Management Tag

• NLIS Tag

The Primary ID must contain the BIP and the BIN. If NLIS tag is being used, the PIC number must be recorded with JA and the BIN must be recorded on the NLIS tag.

JA Management Tags will be produced by Allflex and can be ordered with or without the BIN. They must contain the JA Logo and BIP to be considered an official Primary ID. Tags can be ordered in any colour in the Allflex provide range and must be either a large or Maxi tag and can be either a female or male tag. Members can order JA Management Tags from the JA Online shop at https://jersey.com.au/shop/

The Secondary ID are only required to contain as a minimum the BIN and can include the following

• Freeze Brand

• Management Tag

A generic NLIS Tag is also considered an appropriate form of Secondary ID if the tag number is recorded against the animal record in the JA database.

At least one form of ID must have a readable BIN from three metres.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Pakistan Visit

Prior to Christmas, one of the first major shipments of Australian Dairy Heifers arrived in Pakistan with Jersey and Holstein on board. What was quite significant about this shipment was the animals were selected with a high genetic standard and required animals to be registered and genomic tested.

HRM Dairies in Pakistan has a commercial relationship with Genetics Australia as their distributor and have purchased the heifers for their own dairy operation and on behalf of a numbers of clients. As well as the shipment of heifers, 30,000 units of semen where also exported.

Jersey Australia will be travelling to Pakistan to attend the International Dairy Expo in Lahore on Jan 28th and 29th 2023 providing our support to HRM and GA on their trade site as well as undertaking farm tours and presentations supporting the distribution of the heifer shipment and promoting further export opportunities of Australian Jerseys.

Changes to Lease Rules

The Board of Jersey Australia has recently amended animal lease rules. Leases are now required to be lodged with Jersey Australia prior to the closing date of entries for a show or competition or before the birth of any progeny the lessee wishes to register under their own prefix.

Previous rules allowed the lease forms to be lodged up to 60 days post the event. This was not considered to be appropriate and that any lease transaction should be finalised before the date of the event.

Changes to Prefix Rules

The Board of Jersey Australia at the December Board meeting.

A membership is now permitted without the requirement of having an approved Stud or Tattoo prefix. Members without a prefix will be unable to register progeny under their membership. If they choose to do so down the track, they will be required to submit a prefix request.

Members linked on a family membership will now be able to share a prefix. This will enable the next generation members who plan to continue the family stud but wish to own animals under their own name/membership to use the family prefix. Approval processes will be required to support this from the holder of the prefix.

2023 Dairy’s Finest Sale

Its time to start thinking about whether a suitable lot for the 2023 Dairy’s Finest Sale to be held during the AGM. The 2023 AGM and Conference is hosted by the Beautizone Club and will be based in Coffs Harbour.

The Dairy’s Finest Sale has fast established itself as the premier multi-vendor sale in Australia creating a sale average record in its first year in 2021 of $8178 and followed this in 2022 with in 2022 with an average of $5461.00 with elite pedigrees across type, production and genetic merit being the cornerstone of the sale lots. Daniel Bacon is co-ordinating and collecting pedigrees for the 2023 sale. Contact Daniel on 0407 753 324 to discuss your interest.

SHOWING SUCCESS

LUKE WHATMAN HAS ONE JERSEY HEIFER TO HIS NAME, BUT THAT’S LIKELY TO CHANGE.

THE 15-year-old Year 9 student from Tongarra on the south coast of New South Wales recently won the ST Genetics Youth Challenge Jersey judges’ choice award with two borrowed Jerseys.

However, with his family about to invest in a new on-site processing plant, more Jerseys are in the pipeline.

“My parents are getting a milk factory built on the farm and they’re looking at increasing butterfat and protein amounts so they’re going to add more Jerseys,” Luke said. His parents, Craig and Tammy, initially plan to sell pure milk but also hope to go into cheeses and want the higher Jersey milk solids.

While the bulk of the 210-strong herd are Brown Swiss and Holsteins, there are already some Jerseys in the mix and Luke enjoys their presence. “I’m looking into breeding them,” he said. “Dad has a few Jerseys at the moment and I help him when he’s breeding. I’ve always had an interest in the breeding side of farming and I’ve always loved the Jerseys’ personalities.

“I like showing cattle and I’ve always been interested in breeding better cows.”

When breeding, Luke looks for good structure and a strong mammary system.

“To be a good breeder, you need to focus on overall animal health and welfare,” he said.

Luke has grown up in a learning environment. “I learn from people around me,” he said. “Growing up on the farm, I’ve been able to watch what others do and I’m always asking Dad questions.”

The family has regularly competed in local shows and usually make an annual pilgrimage to the Royal Easter Sydney Show, regularly returning home with a ribbon of some description.

This was Luke’s first time in the ST Genetics Youth Challenge and he enjoyed the experience. “My older siblings did it a few years ago,” he said. “When it popped up, I thought I’d give it a go.”

Luke is starting his own studs with Brown Swiss and Jerseys, although he only has one Jersey heifer at the moment.

“My sister’s partner Shane Oslear has a lot of Jerseys so I entered a couple of them in the challenge, along with some Holsteins and Brown Swiss,” he said.

Luke did a lot of the clipping and helped prepare the team of seven for the online show, earning praise from the judges for his efforts.

The judges’ choice award was based on the cows’ preparation and the presentation and explanations of their handler.

The success has kindled Luke’s enthusiasm for showing and further nurtured his desire to work in agriculture.

After finishing school, Luke plans to study in the agricultural field, most likely in veterinary science.

“I’m also interested in dairy farming,” he said. “It’s something I’d like to do but I think I’ll go to uni first to do veterinary and might come back to dairy farming after that.”

ABOUT THIS ABV RELEASE

Key Changes to Indices / Traits

• The milk volume charge was removed from the ASI in December 2022, in recognition that most major dairy processors had removed the volume charge from their payment structures and have no appetite to re-introduce it.

The energy cost to produce a litre of water (containing lactose, etc) has been retained in recognition that more energy is required to produce the same quantity of milk solids by animals that produce higher volumes of milk.

• The genomic platform used in our genetic evaluations has been updated to a new 74k SNP panel from the old 50k SNP panel. This has led to an increase in the accuracy of the genomic component of our breeding values. The biggest improvements have been for lower reliability traits such as Fertility, Feed Saved and Heat Tolerance. This update has also enabled us to call more haplotypes that affect fertility in Holsteins and Jerseys.

Top Cows

• The top BPI spot is held by one of the grand matrons of the Jersey breed, Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 11 EX-94 with a BPI of 480. She was bred by Alan and Janine Carson and is now owned by the Singh family of Kyogle, NSW.

Daisy 11 is also the number one Sustainability Index cow at 1035. She is the dam of the highranking bull ROULETTE available through AgriGene.

• For the second run in a row, the top Jersey genomic heifer is sired by the Genetics Australia sire, DOUGGAN. Beulah Doug T2 Fairy bred by Daryl and Lani Hoey of Wonthaggi, Victoria, boasts a BPI of 375 with solid ABVs for most of the health traits.

Top Herds

• Perennial breed leaders, Con and Michelle Glennen’s “White Star Jerseys”, Noorat, Victoria, is the top BPI, HWI and Sustainability Index herd in the Jersey breed. The herd’s average BPI is 237, HWI is 176 and Sustainability Index is 511. The result is testament to Con and Michelle’s belief in high performance genetics.

Top Bulls

Australian-proven sires

• The number one Jersey ABV herd, WHITE STAR, owned by Con and Michelle Glennen, has again produced the Number 1 and 2 Australian Proven Jersey sires, both standing at Genetics Australia.

• DOUGGAN ranks number one on this list with a BPI of 397. DOUGGAN now has 551 milking daughters in Australia and rates well for health and fertility traits. DOUGGAN is also the top Sustainability Index bull with an ABV of 887.

• Stablemate DOBSON has a BPI of 328 and is a solid protein transmitter with good ratings for Survival and Workability. He has 221 daughters in 49 herds.

• INVINCIBLE comes in third with a BPI of 289. A strong component transmitter with super Overall Type, INVINCIBLE is also available from Genetics Australia.

Young genomic bulls

• At 402 BPI, CSCJAMIEO leads the genomic BPI list. Available through ABS, CSCJAMIEO has good ratings for Mastitis Resistance, Survival and Type. His daughters are just entering production now so expect him to make a jump in reliability next run.

• ROULETTE from Agri-Gene is in second position. With a BPI of 400, ROULETTE is an excellent conformation transmitter! With a Sustainability Index of 873, ROULETTE is the second ranked Sustainability Index bull (behind DOUGGAN) and is a son of the number one Sustainability Index cow, Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 11 EX-94.

• The top HWI Jersey sire is newcomer 14JE01969 Goff S-S-I Navidad JAKE at 342 HWI. With breed leading ABVs for Fertility, Survival and Mastitis Resistance, it is not surprising that he leads for this index.

STgenetics Australia Great Northern Challenge

About The Judge

The 2022 STgenetics Australia Great Northern Challenge Judge was Mitch Flemming.

Mitch was raised at Finley NSW on the family operation, Philmar Dairy Company, comprising Miami Jerseys and Philmar Holsteins.

After attending boarding school in Ballarat and La Trobe University Bundoora, Mitch spent 7 years as a cattle fitter, travelling across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. He now resides in Gippsland, where he is currently Assistant Farm Manager at the Clyne family’s “Hillside Dairies”. Here he is involved in all aspects of the operation which milks 1600 cows across two farms. Alongside this, Mitch, his wife Lyndsey and two-year-old daughter, Spencer, own Impression Jerseys and Holsteins; focussing on investing in and developing deep cow families and high type individuals. Their 12-acre property also acts as the home base for Lyndsey’s reproduction and genetics business, Quality Breeding Services.

Mitch has judged numerous country shows and on-farm challenges across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania, most notably the Victorian State Illawarra On farm Competition. He has also judged the Youth Challenge at Sydney Royal, IDW and the NZ Dairy Event.

Mitch was incredibly humbled by the opportunity to judge the Great Northern Challenge

AUSTRALIAN JERSEYS IMPRESS SOUTH AFRICAN VISITORS

AUSTRALIAN JERSEYS LOOK SET TO TAKE ANOTHER BIG LEAP IN SOUTH AFRICAN DAIRY FARMS FOLLOWING A DECEMBER VISIT BY REPRESENTATIVES OF CRV XSEED, GENETICS AUSTRALIA’S LONG-TERM DISTRIBUTOR IN SOUTH AFRICA.

CRV Xseed General Manager Roy Dixon, South Cape & Jersey Specialist Robert Bosch and Tsitskamma Sales Manager Niell Ferreira visited farms in west and South Gippsland and Northern Victoria.

CRV Xseed has been selling Australian Jersey semen for more than a decade and thousands of daughters are now milking in South Africa.

Past bulls making a big impact have been BADGER and AUSSIGOLD, two bulls that have sold nearly 250,000 straws of semen.

Roy Dixon said South Africa was moving away from higher input and TMR, now preferring lower cost grazing systems. Jerseys were overtaking all other breeds and becoming the breed of choice given their efficiencies and ability to adapt to a side range of farming systems. In the Tsitsikamma region, Jerseys were used in many cross-breeding programs. Around the Southern Cape more pure-bred Jersey herds can be found.

Many farmers preferred the Australian Jersey for their overall quality, mammary and dairy strength compared to other sources of Jersey genetics available in South Africa.

The group inspected Jersey herds where bull mothers and daughters of proven bulls were on display. In the past year semen has been imported from bulls such as GOLDBANP, INVINCIBLE, BEDFORD, TAHBILK, ASKN and AUSSIEGOLD. The group

visited a number of herds including Wallacedale, Kings Ville, Jandali, Bushlea, Loxleigh and Brookbora Jerseys.

Rob Bosch said he had not visited Australia for more than 10 years and he was particularly pleased with the quality of cows and herds where Genetics Australia bulls were sourced.

“Compared to when I was here last, Jersey breeders are using more local bulls. It was pleasing to see the confidence they had in using Australian bulls. Last time I felt that we had more confidence in the Aussie bulls than Australian breeders but the daughters of Australian bulls were among the best cows in many herds we inspected. With the quality of bulls now available, I can see this trend only continuing to grow which is good news for South African farmers as I can see greater use of Australian bulls in South Africa.”
