Palm Desert Medical Center

5/15/26

Palm Desert Medical Center This project transforms a vacant site into a contemporary medical center designed to promote efficiency, comfort, and healing. The architecture balances functional clinical spaces with calming communal environments, creating a welcoming experience for both patients and staff. Central lounge areas, a spacious cafeteria, outdoor courtyards, and a layered green roof introduce biophilic elements that support relaxation and recovery, while dedicated staff areas provide private spaces for rest and recharge. The facility includes essential healthcare spaces such as exam rooms, a laboratory, and a conveniently located retail pharmacy near the main entrance. Sustainability and energy performance are integrated throughout the design through rooftop solar panels, expansive daylighting, insulated building systems, and low-E glazing tailored for the desert climate. Universal design principles ensure accessibility with wide automatic entrances, efficient circulation, and elevator access between floors. Designed for a P.C. (Planned Commercial) zone, the three-story medical center responds to local zoning and environmental conditions while providing approximately 40 parking spaces and a safe, code-compliant layout for occupants and emergency egress.

Woodgrove Library) hub for low income Asian residents in Seattle’s The library functions as a communal reading Chinatown, with a particular emphasis on honoring traditional Vietnamese architecture and design to support the neighborhood’s Vietnamese community. The building incorporates natural outdoor spaces and ambient lighting to create a welcoming environment for people to read, gather, and enjoy an educational atmosphere. Curved structural forms and expansive glass elements promote openness and visual comfort, giving a sense of peace and belonging. Additionally, landscaping with native shrubs and small Vietnamese trees introduces greenery, fresh air, and biophilic relief into the surrounding urban environment.

Keystone Library The project focuses on the renovation of an existing library structure that had significant spatial and structural gaps, including incomplete enclosure, an absent upper roof condition, and a largely undefined interior program. The design process reestablishes the building as a fully functional civic space by resolving enclosure, improving circulation, and organizing interior zones to support a range of community needs, including general reading areas, a dedicated children’s space, and a cultural history room. Emphasis is placed on environmental performance through strategies such as stormwater management integrated into the site, improved natural daylighting to reduce reliance on artificial lighting, and the introduction of vegetated roof systems that enhance thermal performance while providing restorative views for users. Exterior spaces are developed to extend the library experience outward, incorporating planted areas and water elements that help manage runoff while contributing to air quality and user comfort. Building code requirements also guided key decisions, influencing material selection, fire-resistance compliance, and accessibility considerations to ensure safe and equitable use throughout the facility.

Concept Sketches During the making of the Keystone Library, I really wanted to capture the magic of the building and how each different spaces whether you’re on the roof or on your way to building; that it invites people to go inside and read some books. I tried to capture points of different people and how they would interact with the space and how the environment around them accommodates their experience.
