Life’s Reflections

Ms. Vinetta Ann Jones was born on February 24, 1952, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Eula Butler Jones and Levi Jones. She departed this life on March 18, 2026, after a courageous battle with a terminal illness.

Vinetta Ann, known affectionately as Viann to her family and friends, was a lifelong resident of Marechalneil Street. After graduating from Melrose High School with the Class of 1970, she left Memphis for a few years to study, and ultimately returned to the city with a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee State University. She went on to serve for over 25 years as a dedicated social worker with the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

Following her retirement from the state, Vinetta Ann remained active. She enjoyed a series of retail positions that complemented her love of shopping. She rounded out her time with civic engagement and occasional travel.

A woman of deep faith and strong community ties, Vinetta Ann was an active member of Mt. Pisgah C.M.E. Church. Her church service included participation in the BR Danner Club, which supports cultural programming within the church and broader community, and the Faithful Few Missionary Circle, known for its outreach initiatives such as clothing drives.

Vinetta Ann was a dedicated member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., having pledged during college in 1971 and remaining involved thereafter through her local chapter. She was also an engaged presence in the Orange Mound community throughout her life, consistently offering support and genuine friendship to her neighbors.

Vinetta Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lonnie S. Butler. She is survived by her niece, Joy R. Butler of Somerset, NJ; her lifelong friend, Julia Robinson of Memphis, who played a central role in coordinating the care and support needed by Vinetta Ann during her illness; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Hymn

Affirmation of Faith: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. The third day He rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. AMEN.
