Consensus Among Three Daughters! Momma, Queen Rose, your lessons as a mother were valuable and true: You birthed us each at our designated time. You nurtured us in this experience called “Life”! You taught us to RESPECT our Elders. You led us on the path to our Lord Jesus Christ as young children. You taught us to Value Family and to Believe in Ourselves! Yes, We Can! You strongly suggested, follow the “Golden Rule” as well as rules of our Parents Home. Additionally, Kindness to Others and Valuing Education were among your priorities! In Response: We continue to navigate our “Faith Walk”, seek to do what is “Right” and BELIEVE that Self-Care is non-negotiable! We believe that we never stop learning! Momma Rose You demonstrated how to explore the world and navigate outside of our immediate community! TRAVEL MATTERS!
The family of Rosie, (Rose), A. Hood sincerely appreciates and have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and ALL acts of kindness shown over the years during Rose’s health challenges and recent transition. Special thanks to the men of Beulah who assisted Momma Rose in her arrival and departure from church. Thank you to Dr. Charles Williams and Mrs. Hilda Williams for bringing Momma her communion, praying for her and her family as you visited on the first Sundays. Thanks, is also extended to the St. Francis physicians who assisted in her care, the 6th Floor Staff and the ICU – Pod “C” staff for their excellent care.

A Letter to Gran,
I’ve started writing this about as many times as I’ve had years with you. Granny Gran, you know it hurt my heart knowing I would eventually have to let you go. The fun times we had, just the two of us, your girls don’t even know. You tried to prepare me for this very day, but I’m sorry—the tears say it didn’t work. I guess I’ll be pushing into my sassy pants now. Yep, I can imagine that smirk. I’m going to miss my copilot, my cooking partner, your car dancing and singing on our road trips—our “Adventures with Gran and Jan.” I’ll even miss you shrugging your shoulders when I asked you something and saying, “I don’t know.” I knew you meant well, but that smirky smile and laugh told me you were just trying to push my buttons. And ma’am, you always failed. One thing we’ll never have to wonder about is whether we said it all. We did. Thank you. I love you. Be good and always lock the door. My breaks will be a little lonely without you demanding, “Get up out that bed!” or “Bring me a treat.” God has you now, and neither one of us got Him beat. I’m glad you took your rest and answered when He called. Now, while you’re up there enjoying your life’s rewards, being bossy and making everybody laugh, know that your memories are engraved with me and the hearts of us all. Until we meet again in the next life, Your June Middle Grand-Jan Jan

Life’s Reflections Rosie (Rose) Alexander Hood was born on June 13, 1933, in Waterford, Mississippi, to the late Eursey Alexander and the late Ruby Marion Mason. She was the 2nd of three daughters born to them and later welcomed additional siblings. Later, Rosie reminded her family of preparations for ‘when I go.” Her family would remind her that she couldn’t keep trying to “crash the Holy Ghost party” early. On Saturday, August 29, 2026, Rosie peacefully accepted the Lord’s invitation to join the heavenly celebration, passing away in her sleep at St. Francis Hospital. Before slipping into the hereafter, Rosie gave her family their marching orders and her history. Her early childhood was spent in Waterford and Holly Springs, MS. In 1946, she moved to Memphis to live with her father; her stepmother, Willie Mae (“Muddear”) Alexander; and her aunt, Ida Bell Alexander. Rosie’s Christian journey began at Mt. Vernon Baptist, under the late Rev. Hammond. Once in Orange Mound, she united with Beulah Baptist under the late Rev. W. C. Holmes, and was a lifetime faithful member. Rosie attended Larose and Porter Leath elementary schools and later attended THE Melrose High School, home of the Golden Wildcats. Her Melrose pride never faded. A proud member of the Class of 1953, Rosie continued supporting her alma mater and attending class reunions well into her senior years. After high school, Rosie attended Rust College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and became certified to teach grades K–12. Her teaching career began at Lincoln Elementary School, where she taught 5th grade. Over the course of her career, she also taught at A.B. Hill, Mallory Heights, and Kingsbury Elementary. After 34 years as an educator, she retired in 1994. . Rosie held a lifetime membership in the Rust College Alumni Association and received numerous awards for her outstanding contributions. She was also a member of the Melrose Alumni Association and, in 2015, received the Historic Orange Mound Generational Award. She was known for her warm spirit and for creating a home where family, food, laughter, and tradition came together, including her homemade pound cakes, which even made their way overseas to U.S. Air Force service members; holiday and Sunday dinners at her home, where she regularly made it known that special meals deserved to be enjoyed on her china; and homegrown fruits and vegetables from her backyard garden. She enjoyed sewing, watching game shows, and word-search puzzles. She enjoyed Sunday rides reminiscing about where she once lived. No moss grew on Rosie’s stone. She was very well-traveled and enjoyed seeing the world. Her travels took her to AL, CA, GA, HI, IL, IN, MD, MA, NY, VA, the UK, and more. Throughout the years, the names by which she was called reflected the many lives and generations she touched: Rosie Mae, Momma, Ma, Mother, Granny, Grand-Gran, Grandmother, Ruby Rose - as she was lovingly called when similarities to her mother shone through - Great Gran, Sister, Aunt Rose, and Mrs. Rose. Different names. Different relationships. One remarkable woman, deeply loved by them all. Rosie was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Anthony (“Buddy”) Hood; her mother, Ruby; her father, Eursey; her youngest sister, Bertha Ouida Marion Shaw; brothersin-law Luke Pryor and Samuel (“Buck”) Shaw; niece Lillian M. Pryor; sisters Karen Tanya Mason and Sharon Mason Delaney; brother Shaun Mason; cousin Ora Lee Morgan (Simon); her dearest Melrose Class of 1953 classmates, Georgia Oliver and Pauletta Walls; and lifelong friends who were like family: Norma L. Ford, Mabel K. Gilmore, Celia Pierson, Freddie M. Ushrea, and Gladys Doretha Walker. Left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her children, Andrea Lynne Hood Crum (Jerry L.), Lorian Yolanda Hood-Stewart (James), and Leigh Antionette Michelle Hood (Damien); her sister, Betty C. Pryor; brothers Timothy Brooks (Debra), Keith Mason, Samuel Mason (Catherine), Kevin Marion (Marguerita), and Sebastian Marion (Sheronda); grandchildren LeJorian Stewart-Fowler (GeMelle), Jerry A. Crum, Jandrea A. Crum, Joyrilyn A. Crum and Askari S. Frith (Maddison); great-grandchildren Jerrea Crum, Kevyon Hatchett, Jayden Gales Crum, and Jaylen Gales Crum; godson Stephen B. Walker; lifelong friends Marcella Freeman, Maude Glover, and Ellen Perkins; her remarkably caring and closest neighbor, Bridget “Hershey” Young; cousins who would often travel to surprise her, Rev. Mattie B. Harvey, Loretta Moore, Lavonda Moore, Sonya Moore Lewis, and Cookie; beloved friend Juanita Shields Tate; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, former students, church family, and others. For more than 93 years, Rosie’s life was filled with faith, family, education, friendship, laughter, independence, service, travel, tradition, and love. She taught children. She fed family. She nurtured friendships. She tended her garden. She traveled the world. She kept her mind busy and her family on their toes. She lived long enough to see generations grow around her and to leave each of them something worth carrying forward. And although those who loved her would have gladly kept postponing her invitation to that great heavenly celebration, Rosie had already spent a lifetime preparing for it. Although she will no longer be seated at the family table, what she placed around that table - faith, family, memories, laughter, lessons, and love - remains. Rosie will be truly and dearly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those blessed to call her their own.
