When I fell on my new bike, you were there

When your first grandchild was born, you were there

When they told you I was in the ICU, you were there

When Kaye passed, you were there

All of my mistakes and heartbreaks I brought you, you were there

And finally, When Kevin called and told me you died for the first time in my life, you weren’t there Daddy, as my heart breaks, Thank you for all “the you were there’s”

Reflections of Life

Reverend Charles “Charlie” Walker, Jr. was born to the parentage of the late Charlie Walker, Sr. and Lucenda Harvey Walker on December 5, 1942, at 340 Rear Webster Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Charles and the family moved to Chapin Street, where he, Charlene, Tommy, Naeem (Theodis), and Willie Mae spent their youth. Charles attended Porter Jr. High and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Upon graduating high school, Charles met and married Dorothy Ann Lee. To this union, three children were born; Kevin Charles Walker Jr. and twin girls Danita Kaye (Cupcake) and Damita Faye Walker- Harris. In 1967, Charles was drafted into the United States Army. He worked as a Medic in Germany, caring for his fellow soldiers who were wounded in Vietnam. Charles was fortunate to work over 30 years, retire with the United States Postal Service, and retire from Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Burlington Coat Factory in Dallas and Memphis.

Charles accepted Christ into his life and was called to preach the gospel in 1978. He ministered to many saints in Tennessee at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, and to all those the Lord allowed him to cross paths. Rev. Charlie Walker was the founder of the Trinity Jail and Prison Outreach Ministry at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church (a 501c3 non-profit). This ministry serviced four mens state prisons (Beto I, Beto II, Michael’s, and Coffield units in Tennessee Colony, TX and the Lane Murray Women’s unit, Gatesville, TX. Worship services were provided at each facility monthly. Every Saturday, there was a class taught by Rev. Walker and a faithful few at the Michael’s maximum-security unit, and the Women of Hopewell serviced the Murray unit. Trinity Outreach serviced the Lew Sterrett Dallas County Jail twice a month by having classes and worship services at Lew Sterrett after church on Sundays. God placed the vision and plan in Rev. Walker’s hands, and so many men and women were blessed by this ministry. Many have stopped by the church to say thank you to Rev. Walker and these faithful workers.

Charles loved traveling, talking on the phone daily with Charlene, talking with his cousin Kat and other friends and family all throughout the day, as well as playing golf. His quick wit and dry humor kept the entire family laughing for hours on end. Charles will be missed by all who loved and cared for him. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tommy Lee Walker, and his daughter Danita Kaye Walker. Those left to mourn his passing are his children: Damita and Kevin, his siblings; Willie Mae Ellis of Memphis, TN, Charlene Walker Jackson of Mesquite, TX, and his brother Naeem Abdul Saboor of Riverside, CA. His five grandchildren; Rekita (Jerome), Latrice, Rodrick Earl, Kieran, and Kevin Charles, II. He also leaves to cherish his memory a host of other relatives and friends

Rest well, our beloved Rev. Charlie, and we will see you in the morning! We loved you, but God loved you best.
