Reflections
Martha Ann McKinnie McNeil was born on September 13, 1927, in Fayette County, Tennessee. She was the sixth child born to Herman Duryea Duryea McKinnie and Darthulia Price McKinnie. She attended Allen White (a Rosenthal School) and graduated from Fayette County High School in Somerville, Tennessee.
At an early age, Martha Ann confessed her belief in Christ at Mays Hill Baptist Church where her father was a deacon. In 1947, she married Savoy McNeil after he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy. They raised four daughters and two sons in a loving Christian home and remained until Savoy’s death, fortynine years later.
After moving to Memphis in 1954, Martha Ann joined Shiloh Baptist Church where she was a faithful member and attended regularly as long as her health permitted. During her many years of service at Shiloh, she was a member and longtime secretary for the Gospel Choir. She sang with the Golden Girls Gospel Group, served as president of the Rose of Sharon Ministry (originally the Young Matrons Auxiliary); and taught or lead vacation bible school.
She served as a volunteer with the Melrose PTA, and in 1969 was hired as an assistant in one of the first Head Start classes. She spent several years providing daycare for her grandchildren and the children of family members and friends before returning to the classroom. When she retired as a teacher assistant for Memphis City Schools, she was employed as Interim Director of the Greater New Shiloh Childcare Center. She taught there for many years.
Her family appreciates not only the many years of childcare but also the care gibing she provided for her father, her mother, her sister, her brother-in-law and her husband. She helped others. Her living was not in vain!
She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters, Georgia M. Oliver, Loretta McNeil Dunwoody (James), Deborah Moore and Paula McNeil; sons, Herman Savoy McNeil (Rose), Keith McNeil Jabati (Myra); 13 grandchildren, Maurice Oliver (Shuntina), Marcus Moore, Omari Dunwoody, MarKeshia Truzy (Teo), Nathan Moore, Lynette McNeil, Jamila Dunwoody, Amber Stallworth (Bennie), Keshard McKinney, Akilah Mattews (Travis), Shanee’ Dotson, Malik Jabati and Jamal Jabati; 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-greatgrandchild, a brother, Silas J. McKennie; three sisters-in-law and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, friends, neighbors, and church family.
