Life’s Reflections

Jason Gatewood Sr., born on July 31, 1984, to Rosalynn and Milton Gatewood in Memphis, Tennessee, passed away surrounded by love and memories that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

Jason spent his early years in New York City, where he forged lasting connections with his grandfather and family. It was in New York that he and his brothers were baptized at Allen AME Church in Queens, a moment that marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith and family. A proud graduate of Melrose High School, Jason was a member of the Melrose Golden Wildcats class of 2003 and participated in the school band, representing the vibrant spirit of the Orange Mound community.

After high school, Jason continued his passion for music on a scholarship at Mississippi Valley State University for a year and a half, before joining his brother Reggie Sr. at Northwest Mississippi Community College. His infectious energy and zest for life made him a beloved figure in the neighborhood, where he was known for always being in the thick of things, whether it was a spirited debate with his brothers over sports or playfully teasing his parents.

Jason proudly served in the Navy, where he completed A-School in Great Lakes, Illinois. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease, which ultimately led to his retirement. After returning home to Memphis, he faced the challenges of life on dialysis. Despite the struggles, Jason fought the good fight with unwavering strength and resilience until the very end.

As the last of his brothers to become a father, Jason cherished his son, Jason Anthony Gatewood Jr. He was preceded in death by his mother Rosalynn and leaves behind his two brothers, Reginald Sr. (Ciera) and Milton Jr.(Monica), as well as their father, Milton Sr. Jason is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who became family, all of whom will deeply miss his unique holiday humor and the warmth he brought to every gathering.

Jason Gatewood Sr. will be remembered not only for his vibrant spirit and love for his family but also for the courage he displayed in the face of adversity. May his memory continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Closing Prayer

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalms 23
