Jasmin Marie Barnes, 38, passed away December 8, 2017. She was a resident of Memphis, Tennessee and Olive Branch, Mississippi.
Jasmin was born May 2, 1979, in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Eddie and Frances Table Barnes.
Jasmin was a State of Tennessee Probation and Parole Officer, a position she held for 13 years.
Jasmin graduated from East High School in 1997 and earned two Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Memphis.
She was a woman of wit, resourcefulness, and commitment. From creating her own line of makeup to encouraging young people to “Go For It,” she passionately and skillfully gave her all.
At Mt. Pisgah C.M.E. Church, Jasmin was a Trustee, Usher, Vice-President of the Higher Education Ministry, and an enthusiastic, willing worker. She introduced “Holy Hats” Sunday to the Women’s Day line-up. Through the years, she worked with children and youth on various projects.
Jasmin assisted Memphis Black Arts Alliance with the FedEx Golf Tournament. She also assisted Mid-South Kwanzaa, Inc. with several of their initiatives. Jasmin has always been a leader, a go-getter, an adventurer, and a voice for the voiceless.
One of her most daring adventures was persuading her sister to go skydiving with her. Yes, they jumped out of a good working airplane. Jasmin was also an accomplished writer. While in high school, she won first place in the NAACP’s ACT-SO playwrighting competition at the city level, region level, and state level. She placed 2nd at the National Competition in New York.
Always abreast of what’s going in the world and beyond, Jasmin unquestionably had an opinion and would unhesitatingly speak up for those who were passive and/or uninformed.
During Jasmin’s illness, she fell in love – all day and all night love. Yes, she fell hard for a mini schnauzer (dog) named Ripley. Whether the pain kept her in bed or had her going to the emergency room, Ripley was a comfort to her. Jasmin courageously fought the good fight. With her hand in God’s hand, she didn’t give in, and she didn’t give up. Whether it was chemo, radiation, or some other treatment, Jasmin kept the faith. Instead of jumping out of good working airplanes, Jasmin is probably now soaring off of mountain tops, clouds, and planets.
To celebrate her life and her love, Jasmin leaves her mother Frances, brother Elliott, sister Ebony, uncle Sonny (DeeDee), Auntie Joyce (Charles), cousins Melba, Maya, Makina, Alix, nephew Delvon, nieces Madison and Ayanna, and a host of loving relatives and fabulous friends. She also leaves special friends Jessica, Sharon, and Ripley, her “bestest” buddy.
