Life’s Reflections

India

Maria Fowler, lovingly known as “Vickie,” was born on February 20, 1964, to Claude and Louise Fowler in Birmingham, Alabama. A proud graduate of Ensley High School in 1982, India dedicated her life to faith, family, and service to others.

From an early age, India was a born-again believer, baptized and nurtured in her faith. She found a loving community at Olivet Fellowship Baptist Church, where she was an active and devoted member. India contributed her time and talents to various ministries, including the POWER Ministry, where she uplifted others, and served as the Jean Spain Harris Reading Room Instructor. Her leadership extended to the youth dance group, as well as participation in the Palms and Women’s Ministries, showcasing her passion for nurturing the next generation and supporting her church family.

In high school, India showcased her musical talent as a clarinet player and was known as a vibrant high-stepper. Her love for dance was a reflection of her joyful spirit, and she proudly cheered as a diehard Alabama Crimson Tide fan, embodying the spirit of loyalty and passion.

India transitioned to her eternal home on Sunday, July 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and inspiration. She was preceded in death by her cherished parents, Claude and Louise Fowler and brother in law, William C. Hudson. India is lovingly remembered by her siblings: Carole (William) Hudson, Dannye (Madilyn) Fowler, Cathy (Derek) Fowler-Johnson, Tracey D. Fowler, and Terri L. Fowler, along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Her circle of friends, coworkers, and her beloved goddaughter will also carry her memory forward.

A dedicated scholar, India attended Belhaven College, where she earned her BBA and MBA in Business, graduating with honors—Magna Cum Laude. Her professional journey included 12 fulfilling years at Morgan Keegan | Raymond James, followed by roles at First Tennessee Bank and ultimately as an Executive Assistant for Memphis Shelby County Schools. Her commitment to education extended beyond her career, as she also took pride in tutoring students for Shelby County Schools, reflecting her passion for helping others succeed.

As we celebrate the life of India Maria Fowler, we honor her unwavering faith, her vibrant spirit, and the profound love she shared with all who were blessed to know her. She will forever remain in our hearts, a shining light of compassion and joy.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
