Reflections of Life

Ervin Darnell Isom was the youngest of four children born to T. G. and Helen Isom on November 29th, 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Ervin accepted Christ at the early age of 10 and was baptized at Mount Pisgah Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He was a member of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis, Tennessee and had been active in the Diaconate Ministry and New Members Ministry.

Ervin graduated from East High School in the Class of 1980 where he played football.

He attended Christian Brothers University where he majored in Business Administration.

Ervin was employed by FedEx Express where he worked his way up through the ranks of the company by starting off as a handler, ramp agent and was promoted into management early in his career. He received numerous leadership awards and “best of the best” manager awards for his outstanding leadership. Ervin received the 5-Star Award, the highest honor at FedEx, for outstanding management, leadership, coaching, and developing his staff to be the best. After nearly 34 years of service, Ervin retired from FedEx Express on November 30, 2017. He held the position of Hub Operations Manager at his retirement.

Ervin loved God, his family, and friends. He loved listening to gospel music, watching movies, and cooking (we loved his famous spaghetti and chocolate chip pie). He lived a life of service and touched the lives of many people throughout his life journeys.

On Monday, September 2nd, Ervin departed this life to be with the Lord. He was greatly admired and loved by all his family, friends, co-workers, and church family.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved mother and father; two brothers, Charles Isom (Bonnie) of Little Rock, California and Marvin Isom (Cheryl) of Fairfax, Virginia; a sister, Sharon Isabel (Anthony) of Memphis, Tennessee; five nieces, Brandy Grey (Samuel) of Palmdale, California, Stephanie Lawrence (Kenny) of Lancaster, California, Quinesia Love (Quintin) of Bartlett, Tennessee, Crystal Isom of Little Rock, California and Tiara Isom of Fairfax, Virginia; two nephews, Nelson McEntee (Mandi) of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Taurean Isom of Fairfax, Virginia; six great-nieces, Alana Love, Samantha Grey, Laila Stewart, Samaya Grey, Kaitlyn Lawrence, and Alivia Love; one great-nephew Kenny Lawrence Jr; and a host of cousins, extended family and friends. Ervin also leaves to cherish his memory his best friend/brother, Jerry Harrison of Memphis, Tennessee.

Don’t grieve for me, for now; I’m free. I’m following the path God has laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day to laugh, To love, to work or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way I found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void Then fill it with remembered joys. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Yes these things, I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I’ve savored much Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and share with me God wanted me now; He set me free.

Son, I wish I could wake up and see you standing there. Then I would know that it was just a nightmare.

Son, I remember when you were small and how you would hold my hand, And as you grew older you became my best friend.

Son, I have 56 years of memories that I will treasure and keep safe in my heart. We share a bond that time and distance can never break apart.

Son, oh how my heart aches so. I would love to have you back and never let you go.

Son, where there was happiness, Now there is sadness.

Son, how I long to hear your voice and see your beautiful smile And have you back for just a little while.

Son, until that day I see you again, I will look to the sky and search among the stars for my son and best friend

Ervin, I will always love you!

My only regret is that if I had known That the last time I saw you, Would be the last time I saw you, I would have hugged you a little tighter, Told you I loved you a little louder, And stayed by your side a little longer. My mind knows that you are gone, But my heart will never accept it. I miss you so much!
