Our mama Ella, lived her life like a beautiful song—full of rhythm, warmth, and joy. She had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen, welcome, and loved, but no one felt that love more fiercely than her children.
Mama taught us to find joy in the little things, to face hardships with a smile, and to always treat others with compassion. Her kitchen was always open, her advice was always honest, and her hugs could heal any heartbreak.
We aren’t just saying goodbye to our mama today; we are celebrating a woman who poured everything she had into her family. We will miss your laugh, your stories, and your bright spirit every single day. Thank you for a lifetime of beautiful moments, Mama. We love you.

To many, she was Ella, but to us, she was Grandma. She was the heart of our family, the keeper of our history, and the gentle hand that always welcomed us with open arms.
Growing up under her watchful eye was a gift we will cherish forever. Grandma had a way of making each of us feel uniquely special. Whether she was sharing her wisdom, telling stories of the past, or simply filling the room with her unforgettable laughter, her presence was our safe harbor.
She poured her love into her children, and we are the fortunate generation who got to watch that love overflow. Grandma, thank you for the tight hugs, the endless encouragement, and the beautiful heritage you have passed down to us. We will carry your love, your strength, and your beautiful spirit in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

A Life of Faith & Purpose
Mrs. Ella Louise Avery Malone was born on June 30, 1931, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Buford and Delia Avery. The seventh of twelve children, Ella was a wonderfully mischievous child—so much so that her father once anxiously asked her mother, “What we gon do with her?” Her mother calmly replied, “Just pray and hope she finds her way.”
True to her mother’s faith, Ella found her way early in life. She professed Christ at a young age at Springdale Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Grafton. The Avery family later transferred their membership to Hunter Ave Baptist Church, where Ella remained a dedicated member until the age of 70. In her later years, she became a deeply faithful member of Messiah Baptist Church under the leadership of PastorJeffrey Harden. On Friday, May 8, 2026, God gently summoned His servant, and she peacefully passed away at Methodist University Hospital.
An Enduring Love Story
In 1951, Ella met the love of her life, James E. Malone. The high school sweethearts eloped in 1952 while Ella was pursuing her nursing career. Shortly after, James enlisted in the military, and Ella continued her education with unwavering determination while he served. Together, they built a beautiful life and welcomed their children: Jacquelyn, James Jr., Kelvin, and many years later, Kedrick. Their home was the heart of the family, filled with fond memories of reunions, vibrant parties, vacations, holidays, and impromptu Sunday dinners. After 42 years of beautiful, holy matrimony, James preceded her in death in 1995.
A Legacy of Learning and Care
Ella was a lifelong learner and a passionate advocate for children. Her impressive professional journey spanned healthcare and education: 1951; graduated from Manassas High School. Nursing Career: Graduated from the prestigious Homer G. Phillips Nursing School in St. Louis, Missouri, and dedicated 7 years to caring for patients as a nurse. Education Career: Earned a degree in education from LeMoyne-Owen College. She went on to shape young minds for 25 years as a teacher at Richland Elementary School in West Memphis, Arkansas. Entrepreneurship: Driven by her deep love for children, she founded, owned, and directed the Supreme Learning Center for 19 years, leaving an indelible mark on generations of families.
Those Who Cherish Her Memory
Ella leaves behind a rich legacy of love, strength, and family. To celebrate her homegoing, she leaves: her devoted children: two daughters, Jacquelyn Malone and Shirley Davis-Newsom (James); three sons, James Malone Jr., Kelvin Malone (Clara), and Kedrick Malone (Kiasi); and one adopted son, Reginold Thompson; her siblings & in-laws: one sister, Catherine Swearingen; one sister-inlaw, Mary Scott; and one brother-in-law, Odis Williams; her Legacy of Generations: 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A special caregiver: one loving nephew who was always faithfully by her side, Ricky Hulon. A cloud of witnesses: A host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Well done, good and faithful servant. You found your way right into the arms of the Lord.
