Life’s Reflections

Bernice Green Nevils was born on January 26, 1926 to the late Zedrick and Jessie P. Green in Memphis, TN. Bernice was one of five children. God called her home on July 25, 2021.

Bernice accepted Christ early and worked on many ministries over the years. Her last membership was at New Hickory Hill MBC in Memphis, TN where she was an active member until her age and health made it impossible to attend.

Bernice was educated in the Memphis City School, but she later moved to St. Louis, MO where she completed school with honors. Bernice was joined in Holy Matrimony to Aubrey L. Nevils in 1948. Bernice and Aubrey moved to Detroit MI and had a daughter, Angela.

Bernice wanted to pursue a career in accounting but Aubrey wanted her to stay home and care for her family. Later in life she found her niche and became an outstanding Avon Lady. She enjoyed many titles as wife, sister, aunt, and mother. The one title she cherished most was Granny.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband (Aubrey), one sister (Alma) and two brothers (Zedrick “Sonny” and Earl). She leaves to cherish her sweet memories daughter- Angela (Tyrone) Leakes, Grandsons-Rashard (Shavetta) Nevils-Leakes, Damien Leakes Sr and Eric (Christina) Smith. Great Grandchildren: Shakiya Bryson, Brooklyne Nevils-Leakes, Damien Leakes Jr. and Denim Leakes, Sister-Mary Diggs, God Daughters: Ella (Trent) Cobb and Gwenda Carter-Louis and a village of nephews, niecies, cousins, relatives, friends and the entire Leakes Family.

Your prayers, cards and loving words and visits are immeasurable. Your love and support made this time of sorrow bearable. The words thank you are small, but they are monumental in terms of the sentiment we wish to express. A special thank you to LaKesha Thomas (God Grandchild) for stepping in to assist with Granny’s care during this last year. We would also like to thank the staff of Crossroads Hospice who was our advocate to make her final days at home possible.
