Our Special Pa

rtne rs

RELOCATE 2 Colorado Springs™, is the annual publication that’s been assisting individuals, families and businesses relocating to the Pikes Peak Region for the past 41 years. KPG (Keaton Publications Group) took the publication digital with our 2023/24 Annual Issue. We left the world of paper, ink, printing and shipping to be a digital publication at www. RELOCATE2ColoradoSprings.com. Although KPG agonized over this decision, we’ve discovered the decision restored flexibility and control of our operations, while allowing users the ability to click on web addresses to quickly access the information they need without a middleman involved.

About Our Cover

Our cover once again dives into the world of Art on the Streets, by the Colorado Springs Downtown Partnership. This time, however, we are revisiting the 2023/24 Art on the Streets program. KPG is also revisiting the artist Juls Mendoza that submitted a mural of “I Choose Art”, which is part of Juls Mendoza’s “cultural surrealism” portfolio. Follow his work at Instagram:@Juls_arte_ and www.julsmendoza.com. Juls is a Denver-based multi-disciplinary artist whose work celebrates his cultural heritage. It is a distinctive style he calls "Cultural Surrealism." His art centers on themes of Cultural Identity, Community, and Social Justice. Born in El Paso, TX, and raised in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Juls’ artistic vision is profoundly shaped by his experiences growing up in a border town. His work reflects his Mexican roots and Latino culture. In “I Choose Art”, the child serves as a broader representation of Latino culture who find their identity and voice through creative expression. Juls has painted large-scale murals across Colorado and has also completed significant public murals and art projects in Mexico. His murals are more than just visual experiences—they are cultural dialogues that connect communities and celebrate heritage. Juls says of his work, “I am who I am because of my Mexican and Latino heritage. Incorporating my heritage into my art is deeply meaningful to me, and I believe it resonates with others who share that sentiment.” He sees it as a blessing to channel these influences into his art, using them to inspire others and foster a sense of cultural pride and unity.

Community Profiles Colorado Springs An enviable quality of life, a location impossible to duplicate and a history that is both unique and diverse has made Colorado Springs a thriving community that is always moving forward. As Colorado’s second largest city and largest when defined by area, Colorado Springs is a year-round destination for tourists, business and future residents because of its impressive surroundings, broad array of regional assets and a long list of accolades as a place to live, work and play. Colorado Springs was the dream of General William Jackson Palmer who envisioned a city of the future where culture, temperance and gracious living would define the community. Fountain Colony, the original name for Palmer’s young city, quickly became known as Colorado Springs – a derivative of the bawdy mining and milling town of Colorado City and the therapeutic mineral springs of nearby Manitou Springs. The discovery of gold in Cripple Creek brought thousands anxious to find their fortune: promoters, industrialists and gamblers - even artists and writers - came to what was the richest city per

capita in the nation. Extravagant homes built by miners who became millionaires are now an exclusive neighborhood near downtown that is also home to Colorado College. When the gold played out, civic minded business men led by Spencer Penrose, determined that Colorado Springs’ natural beauty, Pikes Peak and the automobile would make it a unique tourist destination. From these beginnings the city has seen continuous and sometimes explosive growth. Its location along with generally sunny and mild weather has made it an ideal location for military training and defense related high-tech industries. Small business is “BIG” in Colorado Springs and tourism is still the third largest part of the economy. Then there is Colorado Springs’ long history with Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Today, as Olympic City USA, Colorado Springs is home to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), U.S. Paralympics, 20+ National Olympic Governing Bodies, the Colorado

Widefield and Security are high density housing developments. All three are neighbors of Fort Carson, one of the youngest posts of the U.S. Army. The growth of Fort Carson has had a profound positive impact on the valley. New housing, businesses and retail opportunities keep sprouting up all over the area adding to an already bustling community. People like living in Fountain Valley because of the great schools, small town charm, affordability and proximity to big city amenities.

Widefield started in the mid-60’s when Widefield Homes began construction of this community. Widefield School District 3 serves Security/ Widefield and takes on several key functions normally performed by municipal governments. The school district manages the Community Center (Widefield Community Education and Recreation Services), oversees the Security Public Library and has built trails and parks in the area for the citizens of the school district. Its students enjoy a wide variety of curriculum choices in up to date facilities with low student/teacher ratios. Planning for the district is a key component of success as it positions itself to meet the demands that come with the future growth expectations.

Basics Auto Registration, Driver License, Auto Insurance

High Altitude Tips for Visitors and New Residents Colorado Springs can get to an altitude a little over 6,000 feet. Victor and Cripple Creek get up to 9,500 feet and the summit of Pikes Peak sits at 14,115 feet. This is good for our bodies (because it burns more calories), but it can also cause some very uncomfortable side effects, which may ruin a great adventure you’ve been looking forward to. Just remember, high altitudes, when you haven’t had the time to adjust can produce dizziness, nausea, headaches and dehydration.

Auto Registration

Give your body time to adjust. Avoid strenuous exercise and drink lots of water. Also cut down on alcohol and caffeine and make sure you’re in good physical condition to take advantage of activities at higher altitudes.

Registration is required: • within 60 days of purchase • within 90 days of becoming a resident • non-resident who owns a business and owns a vehicle trailer, etc. There are certain military and student exceptions. Requirements are located on the website. Required documents include: proof of title and/or current out-of-state registration, VIN verification form, proof of Colorado vehicle emissions test for hybrid and diesel vehicles; odometer reading at time of purchase (if not on title); proof of insurance and payment of fees and specific ownership taxes must be made. License plates may be renewed online at: www.dmv.colorado.gov

Auto Insurance

Colorado’s auto insurance requirements are bodily injury liability, property damage, personal injury protection (no fault medical) and uninsured motorist liability. Further documentation may be required for other forms of transportation. Call 520-6240 or online at https://clerkandrecorder.elpasoco.com .

Driver’s License

Log on to https://clerkandrecorder.elpasoco.com for detailed information regarding applications, necessary identification and the types of permits available for minors. Military

INSTALLATIONS

The Military is a major presence in Colorado Springs with five major installations, numerous commands and headquarters, including the United States Space Force – Combat Forces Command. A thriving defense industry is one of the cornerstones of Colorado Springs’ economy. The military also has a major impact in shaping the “personality” of the Pikes Peak region.

United States Space force - Combat forces Command Combat Forces Command (CFC) is one of three Field Commands within the U.S. Space Force. The mission of CFC is to generate, improve, and provide combat-ready intelligence, cyber, space and combat support forces to the U.S. Space Force and Combatant Commanders. CFC is committed to generating and improving combat-ready space forces to enable competitive endurance in space, while also safeguarding against hostile uses of space. This involves sourcing and providing tailored, combat-credible forces to meet the demands of joint and combined operations, advocating for combat-ready spacepower through comprehensive force design that incorporates all mission requirements, and improving family readiness as a crucial element for maintaining operational effectiveness and resilience. CFC is headquartered at Peterson Space Force Base, CO and is organized into eight mission areas, and three critical base support organizations, operating in more than 55 locations around the world. The eight mission areas include: Mission Delta 2 – Space Domain Awareness; Mission Delta 3 – Electromagnetic Warfare; Mission Delta 4 – Missile Warning & Tracking; Mission Delta 6 – Cyberspace Warfare; Space Delta 7 – Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance & Targeting; Mission Delta 8 – Satellite Communications; Mission Delta 9 – Orbital Warfare; and Mission Delta 31 – Navigational Warfare. CFC’s critical base support organizations are Space Base Delta 1 – Peterson SFB, CO; Space Base Delta 41 – Schriever SFB, CO; and Space Base Delta 2 – Buckley SFB, CO. Schriever Space force Base

peterson Space force Base

Schriever Space Force Base boasts several mission sets, including six Space & Mission Deltas whose are focused on satellite control networks, cyberspace, GPS, satellite communications, training, and protecting and defending operations. Located 10 miles east of Colorado Springs, the base is home to about 8,000 military and civilian employees. It is also home to National Space Defense Center, Missile Defense Agency, Air Force Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities unit and the U.S. Navy Observatory Alternate Master Clock. These units and missions highlight Schriever Space Force Base’s role as a critical hub for space operations, command and control, and national defense.

Located east of Colorado Springs and adjacent to the Colorado Springs Airport off US Highway 24, Peterson Space Force Base (SFB) traces its roots to Colorado Springs Army Air Base established on May 6, 1942. On December 13, 1942, it was renamed Peterson Army Air Base in memory of 1st Lt. Edward Peterson who died in a crash while conducting a routine test of a Lockheed P-38 “Lightning” following an engine change. Also known as “Pete Field,” the base served at varying times as a training site for photo reconnaissance, bomber, and fighter aircraft. The base’s status changed multiple times after World War II, until the Air Force once again reactivated Peterson Field following the January 1951 establishment of Air Defense Command at Ent AFB in Colorado Springs – now the location of the USA Olympic Training Center. On March 1, 1976, Peterson Field was renamed Peterson Air Force Base (AFB), then Peterson SFB on July 26, 2021 as part of the establishment of the US Space Force (USSF).

Base construction started in May 1983, and Falcon Air Force Station opened in September 1985.

In June 1988, Falcon Air Force Station was designated Falcon Air Force Base. And on June 5, 1998, Falcon Air Force Base was renamed Schriever Air Force Base in honor of retired Gen. Bernard Today, Peterson SFB hosts several strategic headquarters, including A. Cheyenne Mountain Space force Station The vision for Cheyenne Mountain SFS (CMSFS) began in 1956, when a local commander suggested the construction of an underground site to replace the vulnerable open facility at nearby Ent AFB in Colorado Springs. As a response to the growing threat of Russian bombers and missiles, the United States and Canada created the North American Air (later Aerospace) Defense Command (NORAD) on May 12, 1958. Cheyenne Mountain seemed to be an excellent place for the new base and NORAD command center. Construction began in 1961, and excavation ended in 1964. Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station (CMAFS) became fully operational as the NORAD Command Operations Center on April 20, 1966. The Cheyenne Mountain Complex--or CMC--within the mountain is a unique facility. Located 2,000 feet underground, protected by 25-ton blast doors, supported by springs, and designed to be self-sufficient during a nuclear attack, it is basically an underground city. To defend against the emerging threat of intercontinental ballistic missiles to the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, the CMC initially served as the collection and processing facility for data from radar, optical, satellite, and other sensors under the Integrated Tactical Warning and Attack Assessment System. The 1980s saw a series of improvements to the facility. During Operation DESERT STORM, it fulfilled a critical missile warning function. Its role continued to evolve after the end of the Cold War, to include supporting missions for the Global War on Terror. Renamed Cheyenne Mountain SFS on July 26, 2021 as part of the establishment of US Space Force (USSF), Space Base Delta 1 headquartered at Peterson Space Force Base operates the base today. US Northern Command and NORAD are the base’s largest current tenants with the facility serving as their Alternate Command Center and as a training site for crew qualifications. Day-to-day crew operations for USNORTHCOM/NORAD typically take place at Peterson Space Force Base. Staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the base also supports 15 other Department of Defense entities, from USSF, US Space Command (USSPACECOM), the US Air Force, and others.

fort Carson

Fort Carson – The Mountain Post, and home to the 4th Infantry Division, sits on 137,000 acres just south of Colorado Springs. It owns an additional 236,000-acre training site in southeastern Colorado. Fort Carson is the state's 3rd largest employer and accounts for $2.55 billion economic impact in El Paso County. Named after the famous frontiersman, Kit Carson, the fort was established in 1942, three weeks after Pearl Harbor. Currently the post has a population of approximately 24,000 active-duty military, 57,000 Family members and is served by over 5,400 civilian employees. The post’s 4th Infantry Division has armored, Stryker, aviation and sustainment brigades. The "Ivy" Division celebrated its centennial December 10, 2017. Throughout the years, the mission of Fort Carson has remained as it was in the past - training troops to be combat ready. It's extensive on post training range areas and Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site provide ideal facilities for large forceon-force maneuver training and live-fire training. In 1995, the troops of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) moved to Fort Carson. In 1999, Fort Carson became the headquarters for the 7th Infantry Division, which is in charge of training National Guard personnel. It was also home to the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment that deployed in 2003 in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In 2006, the 3rd ACR left Fort Carson for Fort Hood, Texas. In 2009, 4th Infantry Division once again took up residency at the Mountain Post. Additional changes are always underway at the fort, but it is safe to say Fort Carson will continue to have a significant impact on Colorado Springs and the surrounding area. home.army.mil/carson

United States air force academy The mission of the United States Air Force Academy is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the Air Force and Space Force in service to our nation. Authorized in 1954, the United States Air Force Academy came to Colorado in 1955 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. At the same time construction began in Colorado Springs on the permanent site of the Academy, which was occupied by the wing of cadets in 1958. As the training ground for tomorrow’s Air Force and Space Force leaders, the scenic 18,500-acre campus doubles as university and boot camp. While many cities in the United States support colleges and universities or have military bases within their boundaries only a few have a facility that combines the unique attributes of both into one. The Academy has become a well-known landmark of Colorado Springs and a reliable contributor to the quality of life shared by all in the Pikes Peak region. With its “Commitment to Excellence” the United States Air Force Academy enjoys a rich history with its host community and looks forward to meeting the challenges of the future through the accomplishments of its cadets. www.usafa.edu .
