stick and poke for percussion quartet Performance Notes Notation Guide: Tom Drum: C4 (Middle C) Low Sound: F4 Middle Low Sound: A4 Middle High Sound: C5 (Treble C) High Sound: E5 Speech is always notated with crossed noteheads and pantomined notes are signified by headless notes. Toms and speech are used by each performer and always notated on the same pitches across instruments. Any and all bold numbers above or below notes in small font describe which percussionist should play said note. Percussionist numberings apply for all notes after that are unnumbered and/or until a new numbering is written in the score. "ALL" refers to an all ensemble tutti, while commas describe subsets of instrumentalists playing the note/notes in mind. All percussionists perform every pitch in unison until measure 60. Instrumentation: Percussion 1 (Perc. 1): Four Wood Slats, F4-E5; paperclips are taped on F4 and E5. Perc. 2: Four Glass Bottles, F4-E5 Perc. 3: Four Cowbells, F4-E5 Perc. 4: Two Congas, F4 and A4 One Pair of Bongos, C5 and E5 Text: “A very small element of a curve is very near being a straight line. And the smaller it is, the nearer. In the limit, it may be termed a part of the curve or a part of the straight line, as you please, for in each of its points a curve coincides with its tangent. So likewise “vitality” is tangent, at any and every point, to physical and chemical forces; but such points are, as a fact, only views taken by a mind which imagines stops at various moments of the movement that generates the curve. In reality, life is no more made of physico-chemical elements than a curve is composed of straight lines.” -Henri Bergson, Creative Evolution
