Editors note : Hi All, This month has been incredible. To kick it off on the first of March was Sound Wave. What an awesome day. To see Blink, Sum and All Time Low (and many other bands) was a great way to start the month. Read Leeann and my review and I am sure you will agree it was a great day. It has been on my bucket list for some time to see all the bands mentioned in Grow Up live. Well I saw GC last year, then Sum and Blink at Sound Wave, then the weekend after that was MXPX. So a big tick on that list! I hope you enjoy the interview that I did with Mike Herrera, and my story of meeting him and being at the Melbourne Concerts. It certainly was a highlight of my year and the rest of the band that was with Mike were great as well. MXPX fans are just like SP fans! Maybe just a few more tatts‌That weekend I also saw Nine Sons of Dan live and met them, thanks to Marc for arranging that. So this edition is full of the usual Reviews and Simple Plan News including an interview with Gabriella who was in the music video for TSSML. Once again a huge thank you to those who support me, Martin, Leeann, Maddie and Valentine. Without you guys this magazine would not be possible. Thanks also to my facebook SP mates, you guys know who you are! Hope you enjoy this edition, Peace, Jen

MXPX & Simple Plan I must admit, when I first started writing this article, the only thing I knew about MXPX was that they were mentioned in Simple Plan’s song ‘Grow Up’. However I now know the connection between these 2 bands is more than just a line in a song. In fact it goes back more than 15 years to their Reset days.
Having just produced their first demo, ‘Concerned’ (1995) Reset had began a campaign to get their music heard. In the Autumn of 1995 the American Label ‘Look Out’ released a compilation album entitled Punk Uprising. This was to be Resets, and later Simple Plans first real brush with MXPX, as both bands featured on this album. In August of 1996, with the financial assistance of 2112 Records, the guys headed to the Morin Heights Studio to record their first album. To achieve the best of this recording, the band used sound engineer Steve Kravac. Kravac would later team up with Tooth & Nail where he produced three of MXPX’s full length albums including the RIAA gold accredited album ‘Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo’ (1998) and ‘Life in General.’ (1996).
November of 1997, with tension mounting between the members of Reset, the guys embarked on a 3 week Canadian tour supporting Bracket and headliners MXPX. It was in fact on this tour that the friction between band members would come to a head, and ultimately lead to Chuck leaving the band, and the creation of Simple Plan. Fast forward 7 years and we again see these two great bands cross paths (or should I say share a stage?) again. This time Simple Plan and MXPX would co-headline a 2 month tour of the US. In fact they switched headline duties every night of the tour with both bands playing full sets. Running from January to March of 2004 the tour also featured Sugarcult as well as Motion City Soundtrack and Billy Talent on selected dates the tour. In my research for this article I stumbled across the following interview by Xian Ke – Quit Your Life and Become a Rock Star (Volume 124 – Issue 7: Tuesday, February 24, 2004) in which Yuri Ruley from MXPX and Sebastien talk about living the life of a Rock star. You can read it here.
In another interview written by Jon Singer, Lumino Magazine, Mike Herrera once said – “Ironically, a lot of kids worshipping MXPX in the mid-90s are now hit makers in their own right. It’s funny, because Simple Plan was in another band called Reset - a couple of the guys were, the drummer and the singer – and they opened for us on a Canadian tour years ago. And now they start this new band and come back, and they’re getting big. And it’s cool to see, like ‘wow, these kids that just opened up for us on a bunch of shows, and now they’re making their own way.’” I, for one am so glad that they did make it on their own.

Who is
?
MXPX is an American punk rock band with connections to the Christian punk scene. During the past 20 years, the band has recorded nine studio albums, four EPs, four compilation albums and a live album. During this time they have also released over twenty singles as well as a video (come on we are talking a 20 year history here guys) and a DVD.
1993-1997 1992 15 year old school friends; Mike Herrera, Yuri Ruley and Andy Husted from Bremerton, Washington, inspired by the Southern California skate punk scene started playing music together. Originally calling themselves Magnified Plaid (as a tribute to the original guitarist’s fascination with plaid shirts) the guys soon found the name did not fit on the band’s posters. The name was abbreviated to M.P. But in Yuri’s handwriting, the full stops looked like “X”’s, and soon the name MXPX stuck.
Tooth & Nail Records were soon on board after the band showcased their music to the label from Mike’s parents back yard. A year later (with the guys still in high school) their first major album Polinatcha (1994) was released. Tom Wisniewski replaced Andy in 1995 when he decided to leave the band to continue his education. This period saw MXPX release another two albums with Tooth & Nails; Teenage Politics (1995) and Life in General (1996).
1997-2004 Signing with major distributor A&M Records saw the re-release of Life in General followed by the release of another two albums in conjunction with Tooth & Nails; Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo (1998) and The Ever Passing Moment (2000). Having fulfilled their contractual obligations, the band parted ways with Tooth & Nails. Then in a radical departure from their old sound, MXPX released Before Everything & After (2003) exclusively with A&M.
2005-2006 MXPX signed with SideOneDummy Records in 2005 after being dropped by A&M and released their 7th studio album Panic. In September 2006, having allowed the use of their song ‘Move to Bremerton’ on the cities promotional website the band received keys to the city from the then Mayor, Cary Bozeman in recognition of their contributions to Bremerton. On October 24th 2006, SideOneDummy Records released ‘Let’s Rock’ an album featuring previously unreleased songs, re-recorded b-sides and acoustic demos. This was followed on November 21st by Tooth & Nail Records re-releasing the earlier compilation ‘Let It Happen” as part of a deluxe edition which included a bonus DVD.
2007-Present 2007 saw the return to Tooth & Nails and the release of a six song EP ‘Left Coast Punk’. This was followed by Punk Rawk Christmas on December 1st 2009. 2009 also saw Mike team up with Kris Roe (The Ataris) and drummer Chris Wilson (The Summer Obsession/ Good Charlotte) for a MXPX All Stars tour of Japan and South East Asia. ‘Both Ends Burning’, a documentary about the band was released on December 1st 2011 before releasing their ninth studio album Plans Within Plans on April 3rd 2012 and in 2013 have just wrapped up a successful tour of Oz. You can find out more about MXPX as well as a review of their Ozzie tour in this issue of SP Space magazine.

Phone Interview “ When I heard that MXPX was touring Australia in April I decided to see if I could interview them about their time touring with Reset and Simple Plan in the early days. I heard back from their Press Agent and we set a time for a phone interview early in the morning for me and early afternoon for Mike. I was not surprised when the first date we made was cancelled due to Mike becoming a father for the first time the day before. We did connect the week later for a 15 minute interview and below is the result! ” Jen : Hi Mike, Thanks for spending some time with me. Congratulations on your baby daughter! Mike Herrera : Thanks and it’s a pleasure! We only have 15 mins so I am going to dive straight in and ask the questions! Way back in the early days when you toured with Reset, did you think that they would be as successful as they are now? Ah it was such a long time ago, it is hard to remember but I remember that they had so much passion and drive you know. What was it like touring with SP? Any stories you can share? Well they were so young, so young and they were excited to be out on tour, excited to be touring with an American band, an American Punk band, that they were listening to. So they were always really cool, ever since then they have always treated us with so much respect, even though they are international super stars. They are great guys. As far as individual stories, gee I have not even thought of that in so long, I may remember some more. They were like always taking the
piss out of their guitar player Phil, he was like a metal head and he did not quite fit in with the rest of band in the same way but he was a great guy, super nice guy, super good guitar player but he was sort of a little odd, that is what I remember about the dynamic of the band and maybe even partly why they ended up going like changing to Simple Plan, and getting new members, not that Phil was a jerk or anything he was great but they were on different pages musically.
I have seen quite a few you tube clips of your songs that the person uploaded saying thank you to SP for introducing them to your music. How did it feel to be part of the lyrics of Grow Up that has become an anthem of my generation? Oh it’s cool! I remember hearing that for the first time and for me it is a shout out for some friends, which is nice. It was why I first listened to your music. That is right! (laughing)
“When I see Simple Plan, it’s all hugs and smiles”
I have also seen a video of David joining you on stage during a performance of Chick Magnet, is that the only time that one of SP has joined you on stage? Um David has come up a few times, he has played a few different songs with us on stage, during the years when we were doing a Co Headlining tour I don’t remember what year that was, early 2000’s I think that was in the US though, we did a lot of kinda messing around on stage and a lot of just hanging out, it was really fun. These guys really have a good time and they love what they do and they treat people with a lot of respect. Which is something that I have always tried to do. Seeing these young guys come up and become very famous and still treat people so well. I am proud of that, I am proud to be friends with guys like that.
Have you kept in touch with any of SP? Yeah, you know, like anything I don’t see them all the time but when I see them it’s all hugs and smiles and we catch up on line, every now and then we talk on line, but like anything they are doing their thing, I am doing my thing. Do you have a fav SP Song? Um, I don’t know if I have a favourite but there is one that definitely stands out to me… Let’s see… well, I would probably pick something of their first record… That was the one that they were playing all the time when we were on tour with them, so we heard them all the time. I know “Addicted” was always a super catchy song, I always thought that was pretty damn funny. What was it like working with Benji Madden on It’s Alright and On the outs? Our readers are huge GC fans as well as SP. Really easy you know we were just in the studio and he came down for the day and tried some stuff and sang a few things. We are obviously good friends, we go way back to our touring days when we used to tour to a lot with them. That was just another day in the Sweet life of being (lots of laughing) in MXPX! Sweet!
You teamed up with Kris Roe and Chris Wilson to form MXPX All Stars, who would you like to choose if you were to do this again? Well yeah, I mean I actually do have different guys playing with me all the time, well not constantly different guys, I have like a few different sets of my buddies that I bring out from different regions of the world, from all different bands. Kris Roe won’t be on tour with us, yeah so that is something that is probably not clear of what the All Stars is. It is always me obviously as I write all the songs, and the singer and it sounds like MXPX you know, as it is me singing but ah it does sound like me, we are playing the songs but when Kris is playing with us, it does sound a little different as if Tom was playing the same guitar part, I try to use who ever I am working with, their strengths and or weaknesses to make the best show the best it could possibly be. I have been really, really happy with all the guys that I have been playing with lately. What makes you guys want to keep coming back to Australia? Well definitely you know when I think of punk rock there are only a few major regions in the world that really sort of are up at the forefront. Obviously the US and the UK, but also Australia is right up there. Right up there! Not, you know with what your guys have had over the years, a lot great festivals a lot of great bands, international bands and a lot of really great Australian bands like ACDC, Men at work, people think that they are funny as Australians but those bands were really good and some of the best in the world. So I guess Australia inheritably lives and breaths rock and roll. That is why we keep coming back. That’s great and we appreciate it!
You are not on the bill for Sound Wave this year, any plans for you to be on the bill for 2014? Well hopefully, it depends on what MXPX are doing at the time, but definitely, if I wanted to do a festival tour it would be Sound Wave .It is one of the best all time festivals that I have played on and traveled on. It is great, I love it! It is kinda crazy that we are going to be so close to SW, a week after it, so hopefully you guys wont spend all your money on SW tickets, save a little for MXPX. We will come next year on SW! Will your set list be similar to your shows last year? Really hoping that you do your Acoustic set. Um I will probably will do my acoustic set but it will sound different, much different, as I progress I get better at everything you know things get better, my songs choices will change, we have the new album out now, we will play some new songs, as far as like fan favourites we always try to do a big handful of fan favs, whether it be responsibility, Chick magnet, that kind of stuff, so we will do all of that of course. Awesome! Would you consider doing songs like You make me, me or Prove it to the world? Well I could consider it, putting in to the acoustic set. I would love that You make me, me, is my favourite song. Alright I will try to work on that. (Laughs)
I know that you don’t like to be labeled as Christian Punk. I admire the message that you are sending with your songs rather than preaching to your fans. Has it been difficult for you in the music business because of your faith? Um maybe yeah definitely maybe you know it is been sort of a moving living breathing thing, that as you grow up as you grow up as a person hopefully more clear where you should be in your life, me I just always try to keep things positive so when I think I am up against road blocks or negativity, my first reaction is sometimes mad or being pissed off, yelling at the wall kinda stuff, then I try to move that in to a positive thing, music, you know I write music and I turn it around to be positive. I feel that no matter where you are in life and no matter what you believe and who you are there are always going to be bad road blocks, and many road blocks, it could be in a lot of different forms. So that changes for nobody and never will, it is just how you problem solve those road blocks.
How did you get involved in the Forest Edge Festival? Lets see, we just got booked to play there, As far as I know, we just get booked. I think that I have played there before, a solo show if it is the one that I am thinking of, you have to understand that we do festivals all over the world and if it was not last month it is hard for me to remember! But Forest Edge I think is the one that I went out and got to off road, I don’t know what you guys call it, mudding or off road or you know… that was like amazing to get to do that, but yeah I did a solo show there I think and that was right when the earth quake happened in Japan so I remember that ah I remember that show as I was kinda freaked out, my parents were in Japan at the time, my dad goes there for work a lot, he is actually there now,he is there half the year usually, um that was something that I tied to that festival. Lets hope that it all ok there when we are there this time! Absolutely! Let’s hope for no earthquakes!
“Soundwave, it’s one of the best all time festivals [...]”
There are a lot of youth groups heading down there to see all the bands, do you feel that festivals like this are a great way to get the word out that not all Christian music is not boring and is enjoyable to listen to? Well of course you gotta live in todays world, you gotta… this kids are of course are very impressionable, and I don’t know… I mean I am kinda one of those guys that I kinda feel that people should find their own path the way they should find it. I did the music festivals and I did heaps of activities like that when I was growing up, and it is a positive experience for kids to come down, youth groups and if any thing make some great memories, and something they can take with them and look back on for the rest of their lives to look back on. And you know like anything after time memories fade a little bit but there are some things that don’t. There are memories that have a huge impact on you and then there are the subconscious elements as well, like what you are saying, you know just because it is labeled Christian like a hymn does not mean that it can be good fun music. Will you have a meet and greet there? Oh I am sure we will yeah I am sure, we usually do when we do these festivals. Your new album, Plans within Plans, is a really good title, pretty much sums up my life, always making plans and feeling out of control when the plans don’t work out. Is that how you were feeling when you named this album? Um the title was just about where we were with our lives and how the album came about and we all had different plans and the songs had their own ideas about what they were about, it was a play on words that had a double, triple, quadruple meaning to it. Thanks Mike, I realize that our time is up, I appreciate the time and the trip down memory lane. Sure! I look forward to meeting you in Australia! Bye! “ I saw MXPX twice and they were the best concerts I have been too this year, and I have been to many! I hope you enjoy my reviews of the concerts, it was a huge weekend with a lot of travelling but one of the best weekends of my life! Huge thanks to Mike and Kelly for the interview. ” Written by Jen @JustJenRees
Review X P X M . t f
A Christian Rock Festival held every year in Neerim South, 2 hours from Melbourne, Australia. Check out more info here.
I was very tired due to the heat and already seeing 3 bands that day and heading down to Neerim South for the Forest Edge Festival may have been hard but as I was going to see MXPX play it was not difficult to get motivated! After 2 hours driving we arrived to find that the stage one was running a bit behind so we were able to watch Dylan Joel. He was better than I thought; as I have not had much luck lately listening to rappers. His crowd interaction was spot on, he had everyone involved and hanging off every word that he said and sang. If you would like to get more information on Dylan check out his facebook page. I loved his song Change and the cover of Dancing in the Moon Light was really good. In between Dylan Joel and MXPX, The Winner of the Talent Competition played. I was not really interested but as I was front row, I watched. Her name was Melanie Kennedy and she would be one of the most talented teens I have come across. She sang a song that she wrote called ‘One Day’ The crowd loved her, clapping along and cheering when she sang the lyrics of the chorus that were that one day it would be her standing in front of a crowd. Check out her facebook page here. When MXPX came on the older people like myself in the crowd went mad. We were surrounded by younger people that had not been born when MXPX formed….. However they were as keen as I was to hear them play. The set list included some classics and some new songs. Mike asked what we wanted him to play and when I yelled out Chick Magnet, Responsibility, and Quit Your Life, he said well we will play them later! He smiled at me…. Yeah Fan girl I know! As usual they played “My Life Story’ first up and they played my other favourites ‘Heard that Sound”, “Far Away” and two of the ones that I yelled out. Of course when they played ‘Punk Rawk Show’ I thought it was all over until they bounced back on stage to play ‘Aces Up’ their new single that is actually one of my fav songs! All too soon it was over, but I was happy that I would have the chance to meet them. Another tick off my bucket list was about to happen!
Melanie Kennedy. Melanie Kennedy.
Dylan Joel.
After the concert I begged (as in really beg ged) the security guard to get me the set list but he would not. I walked down to the merch tent very sad, knowing that it was in my reach yet so far away…., to get my tee signed. After half an hour in the queue the security guard found me and said “were you after the set list?” I could not believe it, he found the set list the n came looking for me. He also gave me Dylan Joel’s set list. I was able to get bot h of them signed, all the members of the band signed next to their fav song. How nice was that of the security guard to take the time to find me? When I met Dylan he said oh you’re the lucky one that got my set list that I changed during the sho w! I told him what happened and he said that was really sweet. I was really excited about meeting Mike Herrera . After liking MXPX for a while now and interviewing him on the phone, I walked up and said who I was. My husband who was the photographer on the night capture d Mike’s expression as he worked out that I had interviewed him. I later printed that pic out and got him to sign it the next night. (Yes I love signed stuff!) Meetin g the band was great, and the knowledge that I was doing it all again the next nigh t was even better! After this I headed to another stage where ‘Have you met a boy?’ was playing, seeing them again after what was only 5 hou rs was great. Their energy was so good! I met them while they were eating dinn er prior to the show; they looked as tired as I was! However this was not reflecte d in their set. After seeing them we made the long trip home to get into bed by 2am . Think this story is finished? Think again, next MXPX concert for me was that nigh t!
MXPX Corner Hotel review
“After a huge night at Forest Edge Festival I had a long sleep in as I knew that soon I would be in the crowd watching MXPX at the Corner Hotel in Richmond, Melbourne. We got there to find that we had a couple of hours wait as the band had been held up in Geelong. We headed upstairs to the Bar and Grill and enjoyed a great meal and a few drinks. After that we went back downstairs to see two other people wearing MXPX tees. We started chatting
and it turns out that they were SP fans as well and were in fact the same SC we were at. Then I went up to the bar and met a nice guy that sounded like he knew me. He was at Forest Edge and we spoke in the line while waiting to meet the band. (I usually speak to so many people wherever I go!) After a while we had a small group that clearly were all there to see MXPX. We chatted until the M&G started.
The Meet and Greet only had 6 people. After being at the SP one in Melbourne that had 168, the biggest one ever I was pleased. Mike came over to us first and said “Long time no see! That was great. We had a good chat once again. We struggle to open the DVD we got from the band as they were going to sign it. He also signed the 2 photos that I had printed out, one that I took of him the night before and one of when I met him, and my red MXPX tee. Then we got the normal pics done and I asked him if he would not mind me kissing him on the cheek and have Martin (yes my husband) take the pic. Mike agreed and that was probably the highlight of my night! Hahaha. I then met the other 3 band members and asked them to look shocked that I was kissing them. It was a lot of fun. We got whole band pics and the guys were really nice to us all.
Until MXPX came on I stayed out at the bar talking to many different MXPX fans, even one guy that let me take a pic of his tattoo. Luckily it was on his leg and his fiancÊe was there at the time! Meeting these people was a lot of fun, I know that I probably would never see them again but it made it special that we were all there together in the concert. The set list was a little different from the festival, which was a nice change. There was a lot of crowd interaction between the band and the crowd. Also there was a lot of interaction between us the crowd. I was in the middle of the mosh 6 rows back from the front. There was a large pole there and I was able to use it as a shield a bit when the mosh went wild. (No I was not pole dancing!) It was totally insane. There were lots of crowd surfing, no stage diving, just people getting thrown in the air and carried. I have never been in a better mosh. I was given someone’s van sneaker and asked to keep it. I was also at one stage holding drinks for people who were lifted up to crowd surf. As Martin was taking the pics I was free to just enjoy the show. Enjoy it I did! I remember being piggybacked by a guy that bought me a beer and said I was cute. (Pretty sure he was quite drunk!) I met two girls that were wild. The guys around them certainly enjoyed watching them... Then towards the end when the circle started up I was pushed to the front row and listened to the last few songs there with all the people I met at the bar. It was one of the best concerts ever!
They finished off with Punk Rawk show, which the crowd went crazy. After that there was only one thing else to do, hand the shoe into the bar! I had bought all the merch I had wanted so we were able to head home. We got home at 2.45 in the morning and luckily I was able to fall asleep straight away. That concert ended a huge couple of weeks for me in regards to seeing bands. A fantastic couple of weeks! A few dreams come true and many many special memories had been made.

MXPX END
There was a lot of excitement and hype waiting for this music video, especially because of the fact that fans were going to be used holding lyrics. To be completely honest though, I was a little disappointed, I’m always going to love what Simple Plan do, but “This Song Saved My Life” didn’t really even feel like a proper music video. It was great that fans were incorporated into it, but there weren’t as many as I expected. But of course, being from Australia it was very cool that the crowd from the Melbourne show were featured! It also seemed that Pierre was the main focus, they could have had the other members of Simple Plan holding signs as well.
But still, a new SP video is always good to see and it was still great! I loved how they had someone doing sign language to the lyrics, it shows that the hearing impaired can still be a part of this and can still connect to the music. The live footage of the guys on stage was incredible. I think the reason that so many people are criticising this video is because how special the song is to them. This song was written by the fans, so it has a special meaning and connection to all the fans. That’s also why so many were shocked and annoyed when they heard about TSSML becoming a possible single. Because this project was something completely different to what the guys usually do, I think they did a pretty good job, there are only a few faults but maybe we’re just picky? I mean, usually most videos do revolve around the lead singer anyway. Either way, it’s a music video by Simple Plan, so obviously it’s still great! You can watch it here!
Written by Maddie @MaddieBirkett
Jen : Hi Gabrielle, Thanks for agreeing to have a chat about the making of the TSSML video. How did this all come about for you? Did you send your pics in like other fans and hope for the best? Gabrielle : I did not send any pictures for this video. The video was filmed in Toronto on December 2nd , at the jingle ball show. Chuck tweeted that the fans in the Toronto area could be part of their next video, but they had to have a ticket for the show. The tickets were pricey and I live 8 hours away from Toronto, 16 hour drive in total. My friend Jo-anny whose holding the ‘save’ sign at the end tweeted Chuck saying her & I would love to be part of it. He responded saying : we’ll make it work. I’m gonna put you on the guestlist. So we had tickets to go to the show, so we could be in the video ! Did you know prior to the release that you were going to be in it? -I had nothing assuring me that I was going to be in it, all I knew is that I was filmed in Toronto, but with the editing and stuff, you never know if you’re not going to be cut out.
You are in at least three times? If I am correct? Yes, we were all filmed equally, every fan was filmed 3 times, but only my three shots were in the video ! I’m super happy about that. Try and describe to us the feelings that you had when you first saw the video. -This Song Saved My Life is a super important song for me, because they did save my life. When I first saw it I was super happy to see that I was the first fan to appear in the video and that they kept all my footage, tho I was disappointed to see my friends footage was not all in the video. I do love the video, especially the part where David is crowd surfing. Tell us the story of getting your Simple Plan Tattoo. (love it btw!) Simple Plan have always been a big part of my life, and when I met them all for the first time, It was clear in my head that I wanted that Simple Plan tattoo, not to impress them, but for myself, kind of as an eternal thank you, a way for myself to remember all the good things they’ve brought in my life. So I asked my parents if I could get my tattoo, I explained to them the meaning behind it, & they agreed ( I was only 16 at the time ) . So on September 2nd I went & got it done ! It’s even in Simple Plan the official story at the end ! Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions Gabrielle, once again it is my pleasure to meet a SP fan from another country who loves SP as much as we all do! Keep in touch!

SONG OF THE MONTH When I’m Gone
94: The CD single’s tracklist is: 1) When I’m Gone 2) Running Out Of Time (Non-Album Track) 3) When I’m Gone (Acoustic Version) 4) When I’m Gone (Video)
When I’m Gone is the first track and single from the Self-Titled album. This song’s sound is so different from the other songs. Chuck and Pierre wrote it with Nate Hills, who worked on Justin Timberlake’s and Nelly Furtado’s albums. With Nate‘s collaboration the band put new sounds and beats in the song and on the third album, including some gospel influences. The song premiered on Simpleplan.com on October 24 (2007). The band posted 25 seconds of it. The single came out on October 29, 2007 via ITunes, in conjunction with a live web chat from the band who answered fan questions. Marly : “ It means that ‘When I’m Gone’ you will miss me nah, jokes. I’m not going anywhere. But in all seriousness, this song means to me....well it doesn’t have a specific meaning for me except that when I first heard it, I knew that SP were back better than ever. Well, after all that time waiting and Pierre and Chuck going crazy with their MySpace vlogs...lol ” Brett : “ This means to me that when I walk away it will be forever and that you one day you will realize that it was a mistake to let me go!... And they’ll come running back! “
Erin : “ When I’m Gone hasn’t always been a favourite song for me but since the Sydney 2011 concert it’s now my fav. That’s when Pierre held my hand and crouched down on stage looking into my eyes..best memories, I google it all the time. “ Lisa : “ I have ‘Coz every wasted day, becomes a wasted chance, your gonna wake up feeling sorry, coz life won’t wait, I guess it’s up to you’ tattooed on my back. I got it done in 2007 just before I moved from Perth to QLD. It reminds me to treat every day as if it is your last and to go for all your dreams because there’s no better time then now! “ Maria : “ It was the first song I heard from their 3rd album. I was in a very dark place at the time and it reminded me that SP were still there and to keep holding on despite everything that was going on. Their 3rd album has always been my favorite and most meaningful to me.” Sue : “ When I’m Gone” means to me; I should stop feeling sorry for myself and treat every day as not a waste of time. I should move on and start doing the thing’s I want to do; before my life is over. ”
To film the video the band flew to Los Angeles on November 8, 2007. In it Pierre’s ex-girlfriend (played by Zoey Myers) drives around the city and she sees the boy she broke up with everywhere. One example is the ex girlfriend arrives at a restaurant and she thinks she sees her ex-boyfriend sit in a table next to her, but it is not. This role is played by Perez Hilton as a cameo role. At the end of the video she calls Pierre, but he ignores the call and continues to drink a bottle of beer. This is the last video where we can see Pat.The video was filmed on Sunset Boulevard and outside North Hollywood.
During the video there’s a scene where the girls stops next to a newsstand and sees the magazines moving. On the covers there are Patrick and the other guys from the band (except Pierre).
Lyrics [ 1st Part ] (We’re doing it) I look around me and all I seem to see is people going nowhere expecting sympathy. It’s like we’re going trough the motions of a scripted destiny. Tell me where’s our inspiration. If life won’t wait I guess it’s up to me. [ Chorus ] Woah ! No, we’re not gonna waste another moment in this town. Woah ! We won’t come back. The world is calling out. Woah ! Leave the past in the past gonna find the future. If misery loves company, well so long, you’ll miss me when I’m gone. [ 2nd Part ] Procrastination, running circles in my head. While you sit there contemplating. You wound up left for dead.
Life is what happens while you’re busy making your excuses. Another day, another casualty, but that won’t happen to me. [ Chorus ] [...] You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone. You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone, When I’m gone. Let’s go ! [Part 3 ] I won’t look back, when I say goodbye. Gonna leave this world behind me, Gonna take what’s mine tonight. ‘Cause every wasted day becomes a wasted chance. You’re gonna wake up feeling sorry. Cause life won’t wait, I guess it’s up to you. [ Chorus ] [...] You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.

Chapter 4
Book Review
Simple Plan - Highlights
THE SIMPLE PLAN SELF TITLED ALBUM (the year that was 2006/2007) written by Marly @thepiesendure
“It wasn’t our best period…everything was going well for the band but we burned the candle at both ends for too long.” – Chuck Comeau – Official SP Book, pg. 196 The chapter on the self-titled album cycle in the book was the most emotional for me as a reader and fan of the band. I was very interested to read behind the scenes workings of this album. The chapter opens with a photo from their album promo shoot. It then starts off outlining the effects of touring with the first two albums – it explains that they were ‘completely drained’ and came home to ‘recover’ and ‘reorganise the lives they had put on hold to chase after their dream’. It outlines several individual projects – Pierre got into surfing, Seb and Pat created Man of the Hour, Jeff started a record label that is now defunct, Chuck got stuck into the SP Foundation, and David hung out with muso friends. They also didn’t really rest as they performed at several events, including playing Perfect World at the Much Music Videos Music Awards and other important events. Pierre and Chuck, continued to write during the 2006 and 2007 period though it is hard going as Pierre’s brother is diagnosed with cancer and Chuck goes through a painful breakup. On page 197 we are told in 2007 Chuck and Pierre along with the rest of the band were ‘determined to show they were capable of evolving’ and with that in mind they collaborate with several different people. Nate ‘Danja’ Hills, was one of them and they also asked Arnold Lanni who had collaborated with them on No Pads to help them out. On page 203 we are introduced to Dave Fortman who produces the album for them and then once the album was recorded, they went on tour late November of 2007. The album didn’t do well in the US, but they toured three times through Europe during this tour and travelled all around the world, places they’d been before. They toured through 2008 and 2009, during which they also appeared at several different events. By the end of the tour they were exhausted, but also optimistic, as they figured out along the way where they wanted to go in the future. “It made us rediscover who we were – our identity – and made us fall in love again with Simple Plan’s more traditional style.” – Chuck Comeau pg. 229.
Focus on 2006/2007 In February 2006 the band had completed the Still Not Getting Any touring and was looking to recuperate from the relentless schedule they had set themselves. Of course, without losing sight of their fans and the music industry that was an ever evolving, never ending ride. In light of that, they appeared at several award shows, including the Much Music Video Awards where they were nominated and won the People’s Choice Award – Favourite Canadian Group for the fourth time in four years. They also performed Perfect World live at this event [http://youtu.be/jyT0lKQ-H4U]. Another highlight of 2006 was when they won an ADISQ [the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy’s] award for most successful group outside of Quebec. This was a special award that was created in 2006 to allow Anglophone bands to be recognised by the Canadian music industry. The rest of 2006 was spent with family and friends with Pierre and Chuck slowly starting to write new songs for their next album. In 2007, the push to start the next album was more evident and the fans began to receive news from the band of the process. During this time period the guys, namely Pierre and Chuck were relatively active on MySpace keeping the fans updated on the writing progress [including some very memorable vlogs – does everyone remember the MySpace song? http://youtu.be/3pG0sHQxplw]. Anybody also remember Seb and Pierre’s ‘new song’? [http://youtu.be/bc_C0PANyUU] I think this video appeared late 2006, but I cannot find the original source. January 2007 saw several shows in Brazil to end their SNGA tour as well as an appearance on Big Brother Brazil where they performed a small set. [Crazy - http://youtu.be/HpiYJavlCjw] On the 21st of March, 2007, the band went into the studio with Dave Fortman to begin pre-production of what was to become their self-titled album, Simple Plan. This album was to become a departure from their earlier two albums, with a darker tone and different vibe. With songs that came directly from their lives [Your Love is a Lie – Chuck’s breakup; Save You – about Pierre’s brother who was diagnosed with cancer] and other songs touching on serious subjects [No Love, Holding On, What If – the latter song apparently influenced by the TV show Heroes which Seb and Pat were watching a lot [MOTH-H]]. The first single of the new album When I’m Gone was released October 29th on a live Web Cast to fans worldwide. They then embarked on a pre-album promotional tour around the world before doing some Holiday shows in December including at a special New Year’s Eve concert that was broadcast on YouTube where they performed another song from the yet-to-be released self-titled album – Your Love is a Lie. At the end of the year they took a break from their schedule to again spend time for family and friends, before the whirlwind which would be the release of their new album hit in early 2008. GALA ADISQ The Felix Award For all of you who don’t know, The Felix Award is a music award given annually to Canadian artists. Nominations and winners are chosen by ADISQ (Association du disque, de l’industrie du spectacle quebecois) members. The awards have been running for many years now and in 2006 Simple Plan were lucky enough to be nominated. Normally, artists like Simple Plan would not be allowed to even be nominated for a Felix Award because of the silly reason, that they were signed to an American label. However, for this case the organisation changed the admission rules so that Simple Plan could be in the running. Obviously they must’ve been doing something right for the rules to be bent for them! After a few big Canadian events such as The Grand Prix and Tout Le Monde En Parle, more people started paying attention to them. For some odd reason, people in Canada didn’t really recognise Simple Plan for their musical talents. Although the guys didn’t mind much since people all around the world were supporting them. They had also gained quite a few media followers, and they were actually the reason for the rule change.
There were a lot of media outlets that were commenting on how unfair it was that Simple Plan could not be involved, so the ADSIQ changed the rules. Chuck likes to call it the ‘Simple Plan amendment’. Simple Plan was nominated under the category of Best English-language Album of the Year and also Best International Success. To no surprise, Simple Plan won both awards on October 28. David, Jeff and Sebastien were chosen to speak for the band on the night. All of the guys were incredibly honoured to receive such a notable award. They were also proud to finally be recognised in their own suburbs. They also made sure to thank everyone in their lives who had supported them especially fans and also thanked all of the people who helped behind the scenes. One thing that stands out is when Jeff says: “We’re little guys from the suburbs who had a big dream that turned out to be bigger than we’d ever expected when it came true”.
It really shows in perspective that as long as you keep trying, you can achieve your dream. Simple Plan was so proud to even be at that event with all of their parents there supporting them. Chuck says that they felt a bit odd compared to everyone else, like they were from a different world. But he also thought that was cool because they were able to change things, like the way the Awards worked. Although Simple Plan have been recognised for many more awards since then, this will always be a very important one for the guys. It was the first time that they had been noticed as successful artists, which led to things getting even more crazy and hectic, but it also led to where they are today.

Track by Track 1. When I’m Gone
The album’s lead single was released on October 29th on iTunes. To celebrate, they had a webchat with their fans. The guys said that they wanted the beat that is clearly audible in the beginning to be the ‘heart’ of the song. A music video was released on December 10th and to date the video on YouTube has 16,000,000 views. Link to official music video.
2. Take My Hand
With its pop-punk elements and amazing lyrics, this high-energy alternative rock track has become somewhat of a fan’s favourite. The focus lies on the recurring ‘Hey, hey’ and the heavy guitar sounds. Link to lyrics video.
3. The End
This song impresses with its extraordinary intro and has a lot more pop elements than most of their other songs. Pierre’s voice has been edited to match the sound of the song. The track deals with a break-up like situation. Link to lyrics video.
4. Your Love Is A Lie
This song was released as the second single in February 2008. The band performed the song at the closing ceremonies of the 2010 winter Olympics. The song was also featured in an episode of the MTV show The Hills. In March 2008, a video was released in March of 2013. It has more than 34,000,000 views. Link to official music video.
5. Save You
Save You is the third and last single from the self titled album and was released on August, 14th 2008. A music video was shot in late September and premiered on October 28th. Pierre stated in several interviews that the song was written about his brother who has battled cancer. He’s also featured in the video. Link to official music video.
6. Generation
This song is yet another standout due to its amazing intro! Chuck stated on MySpace that this song was the last one they finished recording. They actually re-wrote most of the song and then had to re-record it all in one day. They ended up finishing it at 3:30 in the morning. Link to lyrics video.
7. Time To Say Goodbye
With a length of 2:57 minutes, this song is the shortest of the whole album. Along with Take My Hand and Generation, Time To Say Goodbye are more pop punk than the other tracks. Link to lyrics video.
8. I Can Wait Forever
This beautiful rock-ballad is about a long-distance relationship and is another fan favourite of the album. Even though it was never officially released as a single, it was chosen as the title track for an animated movie called LaMB Which was released in August 2008. Link to lyrics video.
9. Holding On
Holding On is a very special song because it’s the only song in which Chuck has a vocal part. He says a sentence at the end of each verse. It’s also one of the very few songs that the band has never performed live, probably because no one could replace Chuck on the vocal parts. Link to lyrics video.
10. No Love
Despite not being released as a single, this song has entered the Canadian Hot 100, peaking at No 77. The song has received a lot of good reviews due to its lyrical contents. Link to lyrics video.
11. What If
With a length of 5:55 minutes, this song is the longest on the record. It’s quite different from most of the other songs, one reason being the use of violins. They performed the song along with the OSM Orchestra on September 22nd 2011 in Montreal, which was the first time ever that they played it live since their tour in 2008/2009. Link to lyrics video.
12. Running Out Of Time
This song is a bonus track on Simple Plan’s self-titled album. This song is both upbeat and catchy in a way, but it’s also one of those songs that you put on at a high volume when you’re not in your best mood. Running out of Time was written by Simple Plan, Nate Hills and Arnold Lanni who also wrote the majority of the other songs on the album. Many fans have agreed that the lyrics in this song are incredibly powerful “’Cause you’re watching people die and you still don’t care” and even one of their best songs.

FUN TOUR
Supported by Let’s Not Pretend, Hometow
“
On a scorching hot Melbourne day Emma, Caity and I headed to Phoenix Youth Centre to see Nine Sons of Dan. We had been waiting to see them live and meet them in person since Sian and I interviewed them last year. They have just released their single “Fun”. We were lucky that we were able to get in early as it was so hot outside. After helping to set up the bands merch the crowd came in. I sold quite a few tees straight off and bought many for myself! To kick off the gig was a band called Home Town. They were great. Check out their facebook page here. I bought their merch pack and the singlet is perfect. The next band was Have You Seen This Boy. They rocked the place, with their pure energy. Their CD was available and I have listened to it many times, in particular the song ‘We Got You Surrounded.’ Their facebook page is here.
n, and Have You Seen This Boy.
Let’s Not Pretend kicked off their set with their song called ‘Rocketship’. These guys have certainly got the touch when it comes to connecting with their audience. They then sang ‘Believe it’, followed by a Cover of ‘All the Small Things’ a Blink cover, which really got the crowd going. They played some songs of their new EP as well as a medley of ‘Jet Lag” (which of course I loved!) and ‘Summer and ‘Like Never’ The last song was “Out of Time’ which is my favourite of the EP. I strongly encourage you to check them out and purchase their EP. These guys are so friendly, happy to sign their merch and have pics taken. I was able to get their set list as I asked Jordan to grab me one. Check out their facebook page. Watch out for our interview with them in the May Edition.

Nine Sons of Dan were certainly worth the wait to see live. Their relaxed banter between themselves and the audience was great. Wil took peoples mobile phones while they were setting up and got the band to take selfies, which the crowd loved. The first song was “Diamond Skin’, my fav song of theirs (in fact one of my fav of all bands!). Flakey did a great solo and got us clapping while he played. That was really enjoyable and the entire crowd loved that. They played the songs of their EP The New Kids. Check out their facebook page for details.
The tour was called the ‘Fun” tour. That song is a really catchy tune. You can watch the video on YouTube.
NSOD Meet and Greet : After interviewing Flakey last year I was really looking forward to meeting them. I headed backstage with Marc, their manager, to have a chat with them. Flakey was really talkative and continually tapped his drumsticks on his leg. I teased him by saying that I had not met anyone that talks as much as me and does he always drum like that? He replied “No” but the others said he did! We all had a chat about the ‘Fun” music video and whether the girls in it were models or friends. Apparently they were both. All members of the band were friendly and were happy to have lots of pics taken as well as signing merch. Huge thanks to Marc for letting us meet them, and the band for putting on a great show! Set list : Diamond Skin You Took My Heart Again Villain Cities Animal Biffy Clyro- Mountains(cover) She’s So Fine Hope Is Dead Landslide FUN

R e v i e w
The first time I saw Nine Sons Of Dan was when they were supporting the one and only Simple Plan on their Australian tour in June of last year. They were amazing and since that day I had been wishing that they would come back to Townsville, hopefully headlining their own show. That day came and it was even more amazing than I could of ever imagined! I was lucky enough to go to the pre show soundcheck plus meet and greet along with only three other girls...let's just say I will never forget it! We all originally thought we were just going to watch them soundcheck for a while and then take a few photos with them before heading back out to the line to join everyone else...so when we were actually taken backstage, saying I was just a little excited would be an understatement! After hanging out for a while and having photos with them all we were taken to the stage so we could be up the front before everyone else was allowed in. The opening act Finding Luna were quite different in sound from Nine Sons Of Dan but had plenty of energy and by the end of their set they even had a few people dancing around in the crowd. Finally the moment everyone had been waiting for came. Nine Sons Of Dan were about to perform and after seeing them with Simple Plan, I knew they could put on one hell of a show. They were even more awesome than last time! The amount of energy they all had while performing was
unbelievable and during Landslide it was almost impossible to keep your eyes off Dan (guitar) as the energy he has and they way he performs is so captivating. Their crowd interaction was also brilliant. Throughout the show, Jay (singer), took some peoples phones and recorded from the stage and after seeing some of the footage, it looks awesome! The only downside of their set was that it finished! All the guys hung around for ages afterwards to make sure they got photos with everyone, even when everyone was asked to move outside. Have to say, they give really good hugs! They were all so nice and made everyone feel really comfortable around them, I even felt like I could go up to them more than once to get my ticket signed along with more than one photo. My friend and I asked for hug photos which were really nice, but then Wil decided to 'take it one step further' and 'proposed' for the photo...this 'one step further' thing also happened when I asked for piggy back photos, he actually got me to sit on his shoulders! I finally found a perk to being short! And that's a perfectly reasonable excuse to fangirl alright... Though anyway, in total the entire night was amazing! Definitely the highlight of 2013 so far. I left with 3 of Dans picks, 1 of Pidgeys, 1 signed ticket, a ton of photos and lots of memories! I just hope they come back up this away again sometime soon!

Review
Written by Jen andthen Leeann tells the truth!
Since Leeann and I bought our tickets to Sound Wave we have counted down the days. The draw card for me was Blink 182 and All Time Low and for Leeann it was Mettalica. Metallica! So we had many a discussion (sometimes heated) over who we would see. Luckily when the schedule came out Blink and Metallica did not clash, luckily as I shudder to think whether our friendship could handle the arguments!
Finally the day arrived. Leann -How long have we known each other, and you still can’t spell my name right!- and I met the day before and decided to stay at the Crown Towers in Melbourne. We did a little gambling, had some dinner, saw a band, and maybe a little drinking Yes, Jen was corrupting me but had a pretty early night as we knew the big day was almost upon us. We did not plan to leave really early as the crowds lining up to get in would be huge and we wanted to get a few drinks in to get us through the day. I headed down to the pool for a swim and had a nice chat to the guy in the lift that was wearing a cap and sunglasses. He asked me what I was doing and I said that I was going to SW. He said he was as well. We wished each other a great day and went our own way. When I got back to the room and told Leeann she thought it could have been someone famous. With my
luck, I knew that the only time in almost 24 hours that we had been separated it was bound to be somebody famous. Then finally we were ready to go. We jumped on the train -after jumping on the beds, did I mention Jen was corrupting me???at Flinders Street Station and the train was not too packed. At the next station there were so many people that we all packed in. Leeann and I were separated but I kept yelling over to her as well everyone else was yelling and being silly too. The train jolted as it left the next station, my arm slipped and I grabbed hold of the nearest thing I could. This happened to be a lovely young man’s behind. I did not believe this story then and I still don’t believe it now, Jen was just going for the grope, I said sorry and he replied that it was no worries and that he enjoyed it and I could feel free to do it again. I could not stop laughing and then ended up talking to a large group of guys about their tattoos. Something about the fact that we had taken a day off work and spent the money to go and see bands all day made us all very friendly. Should I mention Jen’s son and best mate were also with us while all this was going on?
Ok, so we arrive at Flemington racecourse, where Soundwave was being held knowing that we needed to enter through the Epsom Road entry. Someone had lost our tickets, no idea who that could be... Don’t look at me; I was smart enough to get my ticket emailed to me. I did not know that it would be the entry on the other side of the racecourse past the show grounds. No problem, we used the brisk 45 minute walk to warm up for all the jumping that we would be doing! (not sure that Leeann would agree…) I’m just glad we found that little oasis where we were saved
from dehydration, even if it was only a few hundred metres from the actual gate. I was glad that we did as we then met up with the boys from Masketta Fall and got a quick pic between songs. It was great to see them, it was the first time that Leeann had met them and she had heard all about them from me. (Maybe more than once or twice!) Well, I didn’t really meet them; more just got thrown in the shot as Jen’s son took pics. But I did finally get to hear them sing, and they are AWESOME !
When we finally made it through the gates we headed to stage one to see Anthrax. Anthrax, WOW, still can’t believe I finally got to see them live. I won’t say how old I am, but let’s just say I finally got to fulfil a dream made by my 15 year old self. I had no idea that they were that old! Hold on, didn’t I just say we were not talking age?? However I guess we are all aging at the same rate. Speak for yourself. I don’t want to be told to grow up! We decided not to get our merch at the first tent as the lines were pretty big (HUGE MISTAKE). You can say that again! And we had a look around -taking pics of anyone that even looked like they might have been a part of a band-. We bought some SW merch -Jen did, she is always buying merch- at a smaller stand and then went to find out about meet and greet tickets. They were all sold out and even though a friend of mine who had lined up since 6 am did not get them. She was devastated, as she wanted to meet All Time Low. Being a fellow Hustler member I did feel it was a little unfair not to have the chance to meet them. But it was not really fair that Melbourne was left out of their Side wave but don’t get me started on what I think of all that! Can we get back to the soundwave review?
Now it was at this stage that we decided to line up for merch. I was keen for a blink tee, so was my son and his friend. Leeann was keen for yep you guessed it Metallica! Can I just add here that I live in the bush, so any chance to actually buy merch featuring my favourite bands can’t be passed up! Well we lined up for at least 2 hours before I said that I could not stand anymore (which in reality was prob 5 minutes) Who are you kidding? you walked me to the line and gave up. It wasn’t even 5 minutes but Leeann said she would tough it out and take one for the team. Well she certainly did. My job was to get bottles of water and deliver them to her. I had to walk a long way and when I got back I could not find her. Leeann is not the tallest person -I prefer the term vertically challenged thank you- that I know and well the crowd was tall and huge. I
tried ringing and texting but we did not have that much success connecting. We laughed later about getting text messages 2 hours later but not at the time! So I lay in the shade and after about an hour I was starting to get worried. I still have night mares about being stuck in the merch mosh. More and more people were lining up but not many people were coming out. I guess I should be grateful for it being so... cosy in the merch line. That is what stopped me from hitting the floor when I fainted. Well that and the nice man in the MXPX shirt that I groped as I passed out. Finally after an hour and a half -is that all? It felt a LOT longer than that- Leeann emerged with our merch! (is this the time to tell Leeann that I got a Blink tee at around 6pm with no line? Maybe not) Not happy Jen!
By the time we got the merch, ok Leeann got the merch, the lucky 100 people were meeting All Time Low. There were people there meeting Miss May I too, or didn’t you notice them?. We got some really great shots of them meeting some fans, but it was all over very quickly. There were so many people that would have been happy to donate money to the charity to get a photo but apparently Alex had to rest. Why he could not rest instead of laying in the parking lot of his hotel at 4 in the morning I don’t know. It was 2am, and wasn’t it Jack who was doing that?? Remember you asked the doorman at our hotel about it, even though they were staying somewhere else hahaha. Anyway don’t get me started on ATL again. Did I mention that there was no Melbourne Side wave? Or Hustlers could not meet them? Yes, I believe you did, so get back on topic. So after that huge effort of mine to ensure that we had merch, -cough, cough, yeah right- Leeann and I headed over to one of the bars to meet up with Jason a mate of Leeann’s and to have a well earned drink. I needed rehydration after the merch mosh. Luckily Jason had lined up as the queues were huge.
Well, after a few text messages and a phone call with Jason yelling where he was we finally caught up with him. After quickly consuming a can Leeann and I realised in the nick of time that All Time Low was about to start. We ran -yes, I ran- over to tent 4 where ATL had just come on stage. We managed to get close to the front. Leeann was taking pics and videos while I rang Sian, -one of our writers-. Not sure how much she heard as I was screaming! When they sang ‘Time Bomb’ I nearly cried as I knew that Chuck and Pierre wrote it. Weightless was prob the best song that they performed; the crowd certainly seem to like that. I know I did. The songs they sang were their most popular ones and made the crowd really wild. I had been waiting a long time to see them live and I hope they do come back as promised. When Alex said that they were coming back in the ‘Fall’ we got a little excited until he said oh no I meant our Fall, your spring…. But hey we look forward to seeing them in September. Woohoo, can’t wait.
Then after All Time Low we headed over to see Blink. I was a little worried that I was going to cry all the way through it as I had waited so long to see them. I was sad about Travis but totally understood as I am petrified of flying. However the day after saying that he was not getting on the plane, for Travis to advertise a signing session that seemed pre booked was a bit annoying. Blink was the highlight of the concert for me. Yeah, they are all right I guess. The set list was a bit messed up, and I guess they thought that it should be different to Sydney’s. I loved every song they did but when they did not sing ‘I Miss You’ I was nearly in tears. Mind you
if they had played it I would have been in tears anyway! There were so many people at Blink I wonder if any of the other bands had crowds to see them. It was packed. It was just so good to see them live. (Did I say that already?) What, you could actually see them?? I caught the occasional glimpse of them on one of the big screens, but that was only if the crowds parted in sync, but it was still awesome to be surrounded by so many other people dancing and singing along, especially when they played family reunion.
So once Blink was over we decided to go for a drink. Blaming Jason for corrupting us at this point as more drinks were his idea. I was feeling a bit over whelmed with the excitement of Blink that I decided to go and get something to eat. Leeann headed into the bar -where I could enjoy a drink and still take in Lincoln Parkand I joined the mass of people heading to the other stages. One guy thought that it would be fun to go wild and dance around. Well he knocked a few people over and elbowed me in the jaw. It hurt! I got out of the crowd, bought some chips and sat down leaning against a wall. After a while I realised that I was hearing lots of laughter coming from a group of teens. They were looking at me. Whoops! They were all students at the school I teach at. I waved at them. One of them came over to speak to me, she had finished year 12 last year and we had a great chat.
Meanwhile I had texted Leeann to say I was having a sit down, but she did not get it. The last text she got was me saying that I had got elbowed in the head so she got a little worried. A little worried, I was FREAKING OUT, especially when you had been missing over an hour and Jason started telling me you had left and gone back to the motel. So we tried to find each other. Clearly the elbow in the head made me a little crazy as when I was wandering around trying to find her I totally forgot about the meeting point. Meeting point – in the event of any of us getting lost, we would head to the big elevator type amusement ride. This being the tallest structure in the whole venue and was also lit up once it started getting dark, I can see how Jen forgot......NOT! During this time I passed the empty merch tent and bought another blink tee. Aaaaagggghhhhh! Jason found me wandering around in a daze and then he found Leeann for me. So that was fine, you know she was not worried at all! I was not worried, I was in tears on the verge of taking up smoking again that’s how calm I was. So
then we headed over to see Metallica, we got a great place to see them, and the opportunity to sit down. Then I got all of Leeann’s worried texts… I may have sent one or two... dozen. But we were now safe and together having fun. It was time for me to introduce Jen to Metallica and my head banging skills. Thank goodness there is no footage of this, well, I don’t think there is any footage of this. Then the realisation that the guy on the big screen playing the drums was the guy I’d seen in the lift earlier in the day was scary. I thought hmmmm maybe I should not tell Leeann. She saw the look on my face and kept saying WHAT! Let the record show, I thought the look on her face was due to her still being unwell or
in pain from the elbow to the jaw, cause that’s the kind of friend I am, worried about her health even with one of my all time favourite bands playing. I had to tell her. However Leeann was fine about it not upset at all… um maybe not quite the truth? Ok, so there may have been some colourful language used when I was expressing myself, my voice might have been a little raised, but that was only to make sure you could hear me over the band...
and I might have said once or twice that I hated you, but I didn’t punch you in the arm... it was a love tap. BUT I still maintain that exercise can be good for something as I was going for a swim and she decided not to. So that proves that exercise is always good for you! I hate you! Metallica were spectacular. Have I converted you Jen??? Leeann may write a bit more about them as I don’t really know them at all. (Clearly or I would have know it was Lars in the lift!). I will never ever let you forget who Lars is either.
JEN THIS IS LARS!!!!
Metallica - 2 hours and 8 minutes of pure musical genius. (I’m not bias at all) The guys played 18 tracks, and rocked them all. Kicking off the night with Hit the lights, they soon had fans jumping playing songs from 6 of their albums. I, like many other fans was shocked when the first strands of ‘My Friend of Misery’ started, as this was the first time it had ever been played in Australia, and the first time it had been added to a set list that didn’t include a full performance of the Black Album. I don’t think my mum was impressed when I rang and told her to get my kids out of bed so they could hear some of the concert (what can I say, my boys have been raised Metallica fans too) When the gun fire started and flames leapt into the night at the start of ‘One’ goose bumps spread across my arms and tears sprung to my eyes, for this was the song that led me to Metallica all those years ago. I’m glad everyone else was singing along to Nothing Else Matters, as my voice was shot by the end of it I was singing that loud, but that didn’t stop me from attempting to sing along for the rest of the set. When the camera zoomed in on James kneeling on the stage, projecting onto the screens surrounding the stage the image of him holding a specially designed Australia 2013 pick, you should have heard the crowd erupt! (My only regret of the day, not being close enough to the stage that night to get one of those picks) Then as the balls dropped during Seek and Destroy the tears started again for I knew not only was Metallica coming to an end, but so was SW13 in Melbourne. The perfect end to a perfect day.
After Metallica we headed back towards the station. The police were setting up fences to control the crowd but being the rebels we are we snuck through. Just another example of Jen leading me astray. We got herded into the crowd and shuffled our way towards the station. The first gate we came to was locked, but they quickly opened it so we were able to get to the station quicker. We lined up on the platform and when the train finally came to a stop, the door was right where we were. The crowd surged forward and luckily we got on the train unhurt. Although, there was that moment when I thought my luck had changed and I had a guy finally falling for me, until I released he had actually lost his footing in the rush onto the train and was crashing to the floor. We managed to get a seat and spent the whole trip listening to a guy blab on and on about his headache. I was trying to resist having a go at the woman trash talking Metallica, I’m a lover, not a fighter, until it comes to my boys ie. My kids or the bands I love. We were trying not to go to sleep. When we got off the train I realised that we were at the wrong end of the platform so we headed the other way, letting some other people go first as there was a rat the size of a wombat on the platform. I 2nd that, the rat was HUGE!!! When we got down to the gate that would lead us out of the station, we found it locked, we could not get out. So once again the rebel in us took over. A guy helped me get over. Yes, I have pictures, and so could you all... for the right price lol. Then he got over and we helped Leeann over. Hold on, that’s not how I remember it. I helped the guy over and then the two of you held all my gear while I struggled over the gate. This gate was taller than me people, honestly. There once again was a sense of people sticking together as we were all at the same concert. That is probably how I got the huge bruise on my leg but I can’t be sure. My love tap was to your arm, so you can’t blame me for that one) I still could but I wont. Can’t believe that after all day at a concert I get hurt by climbing a fence at Flinders street Station!

“ We then started to head towards Crown. I don’t get out much at night in the city - hello, I don’t get out much period!and was stunned at how many buskers and people there were. It was around 12-30am by this stage. We stopped at one guy that had a huge telescope and we got to see Saturn with its rings. How many drinks had you had? I thought Saturn only had one ring, I only saw one ring. It was so cool! We then saw a guy dressed up as Mario and some other freaky people. I hope you’re not talking about me at this point? We seriously only just made it back to Crown; we were so tired that each step was an effort. When we got to our room we both fell onto our beds and did not move for half an hour. I was still holding the room key in my hand; I was too tired to let it go.
What an awesome day! I had a great time, I won’t bore you all with the next day but I had a relaxing time as I had a late check out. After less than 3 hours sleep, I crept out of our motel room while Jen slept and headed to the airport. After such a big day the day before, maybe an 8am flight out was not a good idea) Can’t wait till we do it all again next year! (Next year? Warped Tour is heading back down under in December, I say we hit that. I promise that I won’t lose the tickets and will remember our back up plan if we get lost!

FAN OF THE MONTH This month I am pleased to introduce to you the Lucky Fan of the Month who lives in the Philippines! Her name is Agnes and we are now chatting a lot over twitter! It was a pleasure to meet her. To find out more about her please read on! When was the first time you heard about Simple Plan? I saw their “Addicted” MV on TV once and I was like, “hmm, this band’s pretty awesome” and after that, I just fell in love with them and searched their other songs and that was in 2004. When was your first SP show? Unfortunately, I haven’t been to any of their concerts. They’ve been here twice but I live a gazillion miles away from the usual venue. For How long have you been a SP fan? For 9 years now and I’m still very much in love with them! What do you like the most about Simple Plan? What I like most about Simple Plan is that they always keep it real, no pretenses, especially with their songs. You just listen to their songs and you already feel like you’re okay because you know that SP is just right there to comfort you, you’d feel like SP has got your back with their songs. Lastly, they’re pretty awesome guys who love their fans so much and I admire them for that and for being humble. They always appreciate their fans and they’ve also not forgotten where they came from and that, for me, is a mark of an AWESOME and AUTHENTIC band!
What’s your favorite possession of Simple Plan and why? My SP CDs and posters. When I listen to their songs, I feel like I’m watching them live especially their live albums and it makes me feel better. I also talk to my SP posters, it also makes me feel better! But I’m totally NORMAL, I swear! Say what SP means to you. Simple Plan is more than just a band to me. The guys are my heroes and my inspiration. Their songs have helped through the hardest times of my life and just dealing and understanding who I am. Without them and their songs, then I’d probably feel like I’m nothing, that my existence is worthless. They might not know/will never know this but they mean so much to me. They basically let me know, like no one else, that IT’S OKAY TO BE MYSELF! Describe each member with one word. Dave- Mysterious Jeff- Cool Pierre- Pierrefect (haha) Seb- HOT Chuck- Awesome Favorite SP song and why? I’d have to say CRAZY. The lyrics are powerful and relatable. I was in high school when I first heard this song and I was just mad at some people for trying to be someone they’re not and this was the perfect theme song to accompany my teenage angst!
What’s your favorite part of ABPFY? Uhm, Pierre humping David on the first part? LOL! Kidding! My favorite part’s actually the “looking back” part, that part made me cry and made me love Simple Plan even more. If you could ship each member with an other artist, with whom would it be and why? Pierre & Billie Joe, Chuck & Tre, David & Jack Barackat, Jeff & Pete Wentz (pairings seem odd to me but I like it) Seb & Patrick (my favorite duo) If you could spend a whole day with SP, what would you do? It would probably be in a recording studio with the guys and we’ll be making music all day! My dream is to actually sing with SP someday, although I suck at playing instruments but I can sing! Haha! And after that, we can watch a movie or two. As long as I’m with them, I wouldn’t even mind what we’re doing or gonna do! Best Simple Plan memory? It was when Pierre said hi to me! My friend went to Warped Tour 2011 where SP was also performing. She knows I’m a huuuuuge fan of them especially Pierre so, during the meet and greet, she asked Pierre if he could say hi to her friend while she records it and Pierre was such a sweetheart, he agreed. Pierre was like, “Hi to your friend, hi Agnes” with a huge smile on his face and when I saw the video on facebook, I just screamed and cried and just went crazy ‘cuz Pierre just said hi to me, indirectly though, but who cares! That moment was one of the best moments of my life! Have you made friends thanks to Simple Plan? YES! I’ve made a lot of friends all around the world on twitter, friends who are also as addicted to SP as I am and
we talk about SP all day! Special shoutout to my buddies Stacy and Sam! :D Favorite SP quote? “I’m not a rockstar, I’m a loser who got lucky!” - Pierre Bouvier Favorite Simple Plan video? I’m Just A Kid. What song would you like SP cover ? Damn Sure by Taking Back Sunday. Apart of SP, which other bands do you like? Green Day, Good Charlotte, All Time Low, Yellowcard, Taking Back Sunday, Panic! At The Disco, Forever The Sickest Kids, Mayday Parade, Marianas Trench, Imagine Dragons, The Killers, The Script, The Fray, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Boys Like Girls, Lifehouse.
Q: If you could say anything to Simple Plan right now, what would you tell them? Pierre, Chuck, Seb, David, Jeff, you guys are my heroes and my inspiration. You helped me overcome the hardest challenges I've encountered in my life and I'm very grateful for that. You may not know this but you mean so much to me that I couldn't just imagine living in a world without you guys! I hope you keep making awesome music and keep inspiring people as you have inspired me. I have been in love with you since 2004, it's been 9 years but I haven't met/seen you live yet but I'm very hopeful that someday I will! I'll meet you there, I can wait forever! I love you guys and I'm proud to call myself an ASTRONAUT. LONG LIVE SIMPLE PLAN! P.S. Seb, I hope you don't mind this but I'm declaring myself your “W”. Remember when you replied to me on twitter with the letter “W”? :P Q: Okay, now pick 2 songs of the No Pads album and say what you think the real meanings behind them: 1. I'd Do Anything – This song was actually written for David! Bahahahaha! 2. Meet You There – This song was probably written about one of their relatives who passed away. Q: Favorite lyrics off No Pads?
“I’ll meet you there, no matter where life takes me to!” because I know I'll meet SP someday! :)
I loved meeting Agnes. I hope that one day she can come to Australia and see my SP merch collection! Once again a pleasure to meet another member of the SP family. We have so much in common our love for music clearly!

- Pierre -
007 was put on hold once Jeff discovered Bowie’s new record was being released. Real life might involve being able to keep in touch, but there’s nothing better than sharing fish tacos and a few beers with fiends. Some much needed time off had Jeff reflecting on the past, and that one day, at band camp... Re-energized, positive and inspired, Jeff was ready to do some more work on his upcoming projects before hitting the road again. Home from Jakarta, Jeff showed us living in the Southern hemisphere what we were all missing out on, then, with everything marked off his to do list, it was time to head back out on tour. March also saw Jeff finally reach the 100k mark on twitter (Woohoo) can’t wait to see the much awaited video. Jeff is now verified and officially on Instagram.
Love when Pierre is back out on the road, cause that means he’s back on twitter. Once upgraded, it was time to head to Beijing. Pierre has since been sharing his pics of the tour across his social net works, be it his morning cuppa or a can of coke, we all just love seeing and hearing what he’s up to.
- Sebastien March began with the writing of more music and songs. Things seemed a little quieter with Seb asking what’s happing and if anybody was off this week. Still being 75k away from 200,000 twitter followers hasn’t stopped Seb making plans with Chady for his video to mark the occasion. Spending time with family, in the studio with MTL or spreading some MOTH love, Seb enjoyed his time off before catching up with the boys and heading off on tour, first to Indonesia where he was able to relax in his pj’s on the plane, and then to China after a little side trip to Toronto to collect a little award.
- Chuck -
I’m not sure if it was work or play, but never the less, Chuck got to spend a bit of time hanging out with the Madden brothers at their studio, before Dumb and Dumber (David and himself) took off on a little ‘Road Trip’. Home with the family, Chuck enjoyed a home cooked meal courtesy of his mum, as well as just driving around listening to music he loves. A smelly passenger didn’t stop them having a great time in Jakarta, even if they were only there around 30 hours before heading back home to Canada, where he spoke on 2 panels during Canadian Music Week and was present with fellow band members to receive the Humanitarian Spirit Award.
- David -
Trying to write this piece, I know there have been many months where I’ve asked myself -“WHERE’S DAVID?” Well, it seems he’s here! Now we just need to find him. David must have known where he was going tho as he managed to find his way to a Foo Fighters, Pink and The Hives concert. Wish my sat nav could do that.

My Chemical Romance goes to the black parade !
On the 22nd of March, My Chemical Romance posted a statement on their website announcing that they were parting ways. As a person who used to be a huge fan of theirs, I was pretty bummed to say the least. As much as I don’t like to admit my old MCR phase, it’s still a part of me. I still think they’re a great band. The sentimental period was only made worse through Gerard’s official statement on this, which was very well written and basically told the fans how the band had lost its magic, read here. Though they were hated by about 75% of the people of the world, they really were an incredible band. My Chemical Romance may be done, but they’re not gone. As long as you still listen to their music, they’ll never be dead.

Bands beside SP you like :I love so much Paramore, Maroon 5, Fall Out Boy, Texas and Green Day. I'm gonna see Maroon 5 live in Paris in July with a friend, it's a sold out concert. And maybe in August, Fall Out Boy. I think it's gonna be huge. All these bands are back this year with new records and new tour dates, so I'm really excited to see them during a show ! Since when have you been a fan: I’m a fan since 2004, I would like to buy the Welcome to my life single, but it was sold out, so I bought the album. I became a fan by listening to Still Not Getting Any for the first time. I’m a Simple Plan nerd, I collect all records, cd singles, dvds and vinyls about the band. That begins to take up some space in my room. Hobbies : I like going to concerts, listening to music, playing video games, listening to Man of the Hour, watching movies and tv shows. I love to hang out in Paris, visiting museums and just have fun there. Also I love very much being stuck in front of my laptop, surfing on web sites.

Have you seen SP live?: Yeah, three times. The first time was during a private show in Paris, it was hot, it was for the promo of GYHO. And Sebastien gave me his towel, it was cool. The second time was the biggest European show in Paris. It was a really huge concert and the guys took a picture with the crowd (we have not yet seen the photo). I thought that I was going to die in the crowd, because of the temperature and the pushing. And the third concert was in Nantes, it was a different concert because the most of people in the crowd came for the very first time at a Simple Plan show, and they were really shy. But there were two projects during the show : paper planes during Jet lag and the message "You don't have any power, but you are my heroes" during This song saved my life. The guys really liked the concert and Jeff was very emotional at the end of the show. Sebastien gave me his guitar pick because I was the only girl with the message in front of him, and after the show, he remembered me and he talked a little bit with me. Have you met them? : At the end of the shows, I met Chuck two times, I met David, but it was really fast. And I met Sebastien. The next time, I'll speak much more with him because I love so much that guy. Fav SP Song : Welcome to my life. This song is really special for me, it helped me when I was teenager. I was disliked by the others, I received a lot of stupid jokes because of my name (it means « death » in french)... Fav SP music video : Welcome to my life, too. I remember when, for the very first time, I watched on tv Welcome to my life music video, the lyrics came easily in my mouth, whereas I didn't know them yet. Languages : I speak French. Foreigners Simple Plan fans, if you don't speak French or if you don't understand French, you are not able to know how to listen the guys speak in French, it's just so hoooooooot. They have a canadian accent, and it's so cute and adorable. I speak English, even though I make some mistakes. And I understand Spanish. What do you do for a living?: I'm a student in plastic arts. I would like to become a graphic designer. Fave books : Owen Noone & the Marauder, Nine Eleven. Fave movies : Panic Room, The Devil Wears Prada, One Day, Le prénom (french movie), The Hunger Games and the saga Resident Evil. Fave Tv shows : I love The Big Bang Theory, and I was a huge Friends fan. And Lost too. Sometimes, it was weird, but I liked it.
