FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK... Wow! Another month has flown by! Can’t believe this is the October Edition, and summer is almost upon us. (The Australian Summer!) We have another huge edition for you to read. I am getting many requests for interviews so I have started another music site to promote bands and to release the interviews that may not fit in to this magazine’s genre. Please like Music Injection on Facebook here to keep up with other bands news. We welcome Sophie as our news editor, Sophie is no new comer to the magazine, she has been a writer almost since the beginning of the magazine. She is studying journalism and with her experience and passion she has added depth to this edition by covering the SP news. Once again our designer Freda has worked tirelessly to give our magazine a more professional look, and our writers have worked well together to bring you the SP news and much more. Thanks to John Howath from Nuclear Blast Records for setting up the Threshold, Seether and Sierra interviews and others that will be in next month’s. Also thanks to Ceri for the Echosmith interview, and to Vincent for the Less Than Jake interview, Dan Palmer for his time to catch up for a drink and a chat the last time he was here in Australia, and Bianca for the Spectral Fires interview. Thanks to the bands for answering my questions either by email or by phone. There are many more interviews to come! While I am thanking everyone I would like to thank the photographers that are kind enough to allow me to use their images. Next month we have an interview with Little Sea that have just written some songs with Pierre and Chuck and many more features and interviews and of course the Simple Plan news. We are looking for new writers and proof readers. If anyone is interested, email us at simpleplanspace@gmail.com and tell us a bit about yourself. Till next time, keep listening to the music you love! Jen

Kiehl’s Rocks For Kids Written by Gillian @pierrebuvier The Kiehl’s Rocks For Kids concert kicked off with Chuck talking about how important the cause was to the band and their foundation and thanked the fans for being there. Chuck went on about how Kiehl’s had a weekend where one dollar from every purchase at their stores was donated to the Simple Plan Foundation. Simple Plan also has a special cream, and all the proceeds go to their foundation as well. Also, for every view the live stream of the concert got, one dollar was donated to the Simple Plan Foundation. Simple Plan started the show with their massive hit “Welcome To My Life”, and ended it with “Summer Paradise.” The set list was: 1. Welcome To My Life 2. I’m Just A Kid 3. Jet Lag 4. Shut Up 5. Loser Of The Year 6. Perfect 7. Astronaut 8. I’d Do Anything 9. Crazy 10. Lucky One 11. Summer Paradise

If you missed the live stream, or if you want to watch it over and over again, here it is. To learn more about Kiehl’s and what they do, visit their website. If you want to learn more about the Simple Plan Foundation, click here.

live review

Simple PLan Kiehl’s rocks for kids I tried to see Simple Plan twice this year, the OneXOne concert & the Canada Day concert. I was about to go but 5 days before both times it all failed on me. This time I was luckier. I met my friend Megan and we stood in line and met some other fans. Finally I got a chance to chat in person instead of online! We met Tasha the one kind of involved with the SP Crew. Vivian was one fan we got chatting to and became friends with. She got her tickets from Chuck. We heard someone coming around asking for winners for tickets sure enough Vivian, Megan, and I were on the guest list. We ended up getting up in front of the line, got wristbands, got in earlier, got professional photos shot of us three together, and ended up in the VIP section. This was Vivian, Megan, and my first VIP event. and first acoustic show to see. Us three were Lucky Ones. The VIP section was stage level, had nice seating area and we could get free drinks and food. Throughout the event on the walls there were videos playing of the Kiehl’s promotion and Simple Plan foundation. The Vice President of Kiehl’s came out and talked then introduced Chuck to come out and talk. Chuck did his thing and high fived her. He thanked Kiehl’s and truly cares about the foundation to helping teens and sick kids. He loves that his face is so moisturized. Chuck then intro-

duced the rest of the band to come out. We were right there in front of the guys. This event was being broadcast online worldwide, you had to register and for every person watching it Kiehl’s donated $1 to The Simple Plan Foundation. Pierre mentioned something with biatch before the show all of a sudden when he looked in the crowd fans from Brazil had a sign. He read it thought it said biatch but it didn’t. Pierre also messed up lyrics to the song “Astronaut” he expected us to sing out. David talked about people complaining about being violated with the free music on their new iPhones. At the end of the show Simple Plan all got together and bowed to us. David slammed Tasha’s hand with his hand and he grabbed Megan’s hand really hard. After the show Chuck was over meeting the fans so we went over. Vivian’s photos were not turning out and I was trying to get Megan to go get a photo with him. Chuck said something on the lines of this “come on let’s get this moving.” I went up to him to get my photo with him said “hello again” because we met already at the book signing. I said “sorry I was trying to get my friend moving I know you have to get going.” Vivian had to leave so Megan and I chatted and waited inside with Tasha and her friends Marcy, and Steph. The security guy came up told us to get go-

Live review Simple plan - Kiehl’s rocks for kids ing, they are closing up. I asked a woman there when are were going to get the professional photos of us that were taken. She said that she’ll find out for us. She told us that it would be on Kiehl’s Facebook page. She thanked us for coming out and told us we were so sweet. Megan and I left and all the fans were standing out back waiting for the guys to come out so we chatted and hung out with Tasha, Marcy, and Steph again. Simple Plan’s manager Eric left and later on Pierre finally came out. The rest of the guys came out and we all got to chat and take more photos with them. I told Jeff that he didn’t come see me at his restaurant and it was my birthday he said “I am so sorry” I told him don’t worry about it. I went over to chat with Chuck told him that I was sorry about earlier he said “don’t worry about it” I let him know Jen from the Simple Plan Space magazine wanted me to do a review he said “Do It.” When I took a photo with Pierre I said “It’s hot again.” At the book signing it got really warm and it we were all getting hot, well it happened again. It seems like every time we go see Simple Plan in Toronto Summer Paradise comes back to us. Marcy and Steph were standing beside us on our way to Hamilton. We chatted all about the event and Simple Plan on our way back to Hamilton. We made more friends now and I also got more fans to know about the Simple Plan.cz website, Simple Plan Space magazine, and to join the group 4 of us fans run on Facebook. It was time to say good night. From feeling so down with things happening to feeling on a high by doing things I love is crazy. Thank You to Kiehl’s Canada, The Hoxton, Simple Plan foundation, and Simple Plan for being so welcoming and nice.

8

For letting Megan, Vivian, Tasha, Marcy, Steph, and I to be apart of a good cause. Also for letting us have such an amazing & wonderful experience with all of you. We’ll always be a Simple Plan Astronaut forever <3 Jennifer L.W. @8jlwphoto

David

Lets shout Hooray! David made a return to twitter this month (making my job at writing this piece a little easier, so for that THANK YOU DAVID xx) Whether it was having drinks with his sister and his favourite business man ;) heading to Premiers, hanging out with his friends or heading to a Ed Sheeran concert. We have all just loved David sharing this with us. PLEASEEEEEEE keep tweeting David.

September is birthday month in the world of SP, and first off is Pats. Chuck made sure to tweet his great friend his birthday wishes. As his own birthday approached, Chuck decided to do something special for sick kids by making a donation to http://www. mafeteencadeau.com/ with fans also able to make contributions on Chuck’s behalf. Having just wrapped up two weeks of song writing, I think we all agreed the guys deserved a little break. Especially when that break meant Chuck and Pierre catching up with Oz’s very own 5 Seconds Of Summer as well as the guys from All Time Low. Then it was back to writing, this time with Blinks Mark Hoppus as well as ATL’s Alex Gaskarth. We will have to wait and see if that song makes the album, or if it really was a colossal waste of time. Having headed out for a special birthday dinner, he was up bright and early for an appearance on Toronto TV. Lunch with Jeff, didn’t go exactly as planned, but hey, Jeff wasn’t the only reason to back in town, because as we all know, there was a very special acoustic set about to be streamed to the world. Thank goodness the live steam wasn’t as terrible as the sound check.

pierre

Sometimes, when Pierre brushes his teeth with his shirt off, he takes pictures of himself. (Who here thinks he should do this more often??) Enjoying the last of summer, Pierre splashed about with some beautiful mermaids, hanging out with his partner in crime and having paparazzi snapping shots oh his sunset nap while escaping on a weekend getaway. Red Gummi bears are the tastiest, especially when caught in traffic jams. Then it was time to celebrate with a bunch of d-bags. Waking up the next day, he was psyched to be spending Chuck’s birthday writing tunes with some special friends. Then, there was only minutes to go until they were playing live #biatch!

Jeff kicked off what was to be another busy month at the Biéres et Saveurs beer in Quebec. He whet our appetite with a little teaser about the upcoming album #5. His new project Mimi la Nuit was coming along rather quickly. In fact, according to Jeff, it was almost done. But that had to be put on hold while Jeff joined the rest of the guys for Kiehl’s Rock For Kids live stream. Suffering a bout of man flu wasn’t going to stop him lending his voice to the future of music conservatories in Quebec. We hope that you are feeling better real soon Jeff.

The start of the month saw Seb ready in the MOTH studio, and he probably won’t need his sword that day. He was going to make the day count. He was feeling that he should always be entertaining us. But we were cool right? Seb started dropping things, it wasn’t his new favourite hobby, unlike the unsubscribe button on spam email. Skinny dipping was feeling rad, even if he had to watch out for the neighbours (I think I need to move to Seb’s neighbourhood) He finally finished painting the last room of his house made him happy. Then, having loaded up on ginger, it was time to drive to the airport; he did have a date that night after all. When the weekend hit, it was time for Seb to have some fun. As always, I missed #AskSeb but still loved reading through his replies.

Firstly: what exactly is Bières et Saveurs? It’s a tasting event that took place from August 29th to September 1st this year. Visitors could taste beers, winery products, but also some meals prepared from simple recipes by chefs. Everyone could find their favourite food, but also discover some new ones. People also had fun watching the program or dancing to traditional music. You can find out more on their website. Now: what was Jeff Stinco doing there? He was answering questions about the business in beer industry in tent no. 17, “Les Brasseurs de West Shefford“ and also promoting West Shefford. West Shefford is a small brewery that he co-owns with Éric Le François (if this name sounds familiar to you, it’s because you could read about him in the Laurea restaurant articles in previous editions). Here’s a photo of Jeff and West Shefford crew in front of their tent: If you want to keep track of Jeff Stinco’s business activities, I recommend you to check out the list of his bars and restaurants on SimplePlan.cz! :)

He also added a link on an article about it on montreal.eater.com, where you can find some photos of how it looks right now. He’s working on this project with Edward Zaki, who said about it:

“It will be a wine and cocktail bar with an easy tavern, street food menu. We are aiming for a clientele of 25 and over, that are looking for the ambiance of a bar and the quality of food and wine that you can expect from a restaurant but all in simplicity and with no frills.” He also announced that Eloi Dion will be in the kitchen of Mimi la Nuit.

pierre updates Written by Damla @pierre_1905

As you know, Simple Plan is getting ready to release their 5th album in 2015. They are in the studio. Especially, as a songwriting duo, Chuck and Pierre spend most of their times together in the studio in California. And on this journey, Pierre shared a pic of song writing process with Chuck and Ben Berger on instagram: On Chuck’s birthday Pierre said that they were writing songs with Alex Gaskarth and Mark Hoppus. Besides Mark confirmed this news on twitter by tweeting in French. How amazing is that! Hearing that, I think we should be prepared for a “crushing” pop punk album. (And Pierre continues to take photos of Chuck in the studio) But of course except their studio life, they are hanging out some friends such as All Time Low members. In other news, according to http:// www.simpleplan.cz Simple Plan confirmed there might be a collaboration

with 5SOS. After that, Pierre and Chuck were seen with 5SOS members after their show. It seems like collaboration news will come true and maybe the new album can include a duet with them. Recently, Pierre decided to share his personel life not just the studio pics. He said on twitter: “I’ve always been a little reluctant to share my personal life online. I’m not sure why but I guess I felt I needed to protect my loved ones. But lately I’ve realized that I don’t really care if people know who my wife is, or what my kids look like. There’s no real threat. And if I don’t share that part of my life, then I’m not really sharing who I am. And that’s kinda boring. So on that note... Get ready to enter my life. The real me. And get ready to be bombarded with cuteness cause my girls are cute as hell.” And shared his cute family moments with us.

Lastly,Simple Plan played at Kiehls Rocks For Kids in Canada on september 19. The show was streamed live. The purpose of this show was raise money for The Simple Plan Foundation. You can watch it here.

chuck’s month in review Review on wh at Chuck Com e au i s doin g! Written by Vitória @dearvitt

On August 3rd, he was present at the Osheaga Festival, the most popular summer festival of Montreal. Besides him, David and Jeff also went there with their work colleagues. Some of the people that played there were Lorde, Artic Monkeys and Foster The People. Check out a photo of Chuck in the event:

Later in August, Chuck was challenged by his friend Marc-Édouard Vlasic to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which consists of throwing a bucket with ice over your head. The challenge began to raise funds for a institution that helps people with the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and also to make the disease more known. Chuck did the challenge and nominated all the members of the band, besides Avril Lavigne, Chad Kroeger, Michael Bublé and Joel and Benji Madden. Check out the video he made of it here.

18

We all know that in September is the birthday of our favorite drummer, Chuck Comeau. So, he decided to promote it as a way of raising funds for the institution Le Phare, which helps sick children and their families. Check his tweet:

On the 12th of Sept, Chuck posted a photo of himself working on the new album of the band. He was in the studio and said that the last two weeks they worked hard on it. Check out the photo!

At last, but not least, Chuck and Pierre took a picture with some members of the band 5 Seconds Of Summer, during their show with One Direction. There are some suspicions about a project between the two bands, let’s wait. Check the photo posted by Chuck on his Instagram.

Spotlight on Sébastien Written by Vitória @dearvitt

In August, when nominated by his band mate Chuck Comeau to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Sebastien did not waste his time and on the next day already posted a video of him doing it. He challenged all the SP fans, besides James Valentine of Maroon 5, Andee and Lights. Check the video he posted!

Later on August, Seb, Jeff and David went to Kiehl’s store in Montreal to launch their facial cream, whose sales will help the SP Foundation, and talked with the fans through the Twitter of Kiehl’s. Check some photos of them there.

Still on the launching of the product, they gave an interview to GLOSStoi, in which they talked about what cosmetic products they use and what they find attractive in a woman. Check out what Sebastien said: What is your essential beauty product? Sebastien: “Before the launch of Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, I did not wear any cosmetic product or rather I didn’t pay any attention to them. Now I cannot live without this cream and I apply it every day!” Aside beauty, what attracts you to a girl? Sebastien: “I love everything about girls, I always find something that appeals to me on every girl. I don’t see a difference between a girl with or without makeup, both is pretty.” Sebastién appeared on the Breakfast Television Montreal, the Canadian morning show of City TV. He talked about the acoustic show the band was going to do in association with Kiehl’s, which happened the last 19th. Check Sebastien’s interview here.

Can’t Keep My Hands Off You Album: Get Your Heart On! Length: 3:21 Genre: Pop-punk Release: March 31, 2011 Label: Lava, Atlantic Can’t Keep My Hands Off You is the first single of Simple Plan’s fourth studio album ‘Get Your Heart On!’ and the first single to be released since their last album. CKMHOY was released on March 31, 2011. ‘Get Your Heart On!’ as an album has a lot of new things to offer such as guest vocals and writers, duets and a French song. CKMHOY is one of the songs with a guest vocalist and it’s the front man Rivers Cuomo of Weezer that lent his voice, as well as writing skills, for this particular song. Can’t Keep My Hands Off You is an up-tempo song that makes you want to dance. It has a really nice beat with drums and a lot of room for the audience to sing along. It’s a part of the setlist for the GYHO Tour. The song also ended up as a part of the soundtrack for the American teenage movie ‘Prom’. It was released later in April 2011. The soundtrack version is without guest vocals. A music video was released around the same time as the movie and features Simple Plan taking over a high school prom. All the stu-

dents come outside to see them play and they dance and cheer. Can’t Keep My Hands Off You was performed on Australia’s The X Factor on October 4th, 2011. And as the song debuted it peaked at 45 on the Australian ARIA charts later on October 24th. Watch the official music video here.

h t n e he month h mo fan comments:

“Well, without that song, I wouldn’t even become a fan of Simple Plan. It means so much to me! Before CKMHOY I heard just Welcome To My Life, but didn’t know it’s Simple Plan. Then I heard this and I became a fan. After few months, I could call myself an Astronaut. Great, great song plus awesome music video.” – Mária, Slovakia, @MariamAstronaut “I love this song, it is a feel good song that I am sure every that has been in love can relate to. I love how they have used funny lyrics in it. It is a song that introduced a lot more people to their band. Every time I listen to it I feel like dancing and singing along.” - Jen Rees, Australia @justjenrees “It’s a song that makes me want to get up and dance. It’s a fun song that gets the crowd excited and a good song to perform live. I enjoy it a lot and I think the music video is pretty cool and easygoing. Two of my favorite moments are when Pierre tries to breakdance and the prom photo the whole band takes at the end. Such silly dudes, you just gotta love them!“ - Sophie Carlbrant, Sweden @sophiecarlbrant “It was the very first song we all heard from the new album and I played it on repeat for days on end , even on my way to Gold Coast!.. It’s like Ol’ School SP!” - Brett, Australia @DangerBrett

“Such a catchy song me and my girls love doin car karoke! - Jodie, Australia It’s one of my favourite songs from the album. Such a catchy, up beat song. - Sara Australia

Exclusive Interview with Sydney from

By Jen @justjenrees

Echosmith are the band to watch right now. They are taking the world by storm with their hit single “Co ol Kids”. I interviewed Sydney, (vocalist and keyb oards) in Germany. They are a young hardworking band that have played Warp ed , b een to the Philippines and are now in Germany. What a fantastic summer this has been for you and looks likely to be a great rest of the year as well! First Warped Tour, then the Philippines and then more tour news. A great to start to what is shaping up to be a great career in the music industry. You have achieved success pretty quickly, has it seemed like a whirlwind time for you? Sydney: It seems like it’s fast to a lot of people but we’ve been a band for almost 7 years. We started super young but we’ve been working so hard for that whole time. It’s gotten a lot crazier the past year though that’s for sure. I’m writing you from Germany right now, which is hard to believe.
A few questions about Warped Tour, I have read awesome reviews of your sets in each city and that you are one of the hottest acts to watch. Aw thank you. (blushing)
Take us through a typical day at Warped, I think our readers seem to think that

26

it is all glamorous, can you set us straight? Ok it’s not glamorous hardly at all and that’s the funny thing about doing this as a job, sure it’s super rewarding but it’s more work than glamor on most days. We would get up every day around 8am and put posters wherever we could, (they only allowed 10 because the year before we did 150 every single morning) and then we would chalk every entrance saying our band name and the set time. (See the pic on next page). Funny part is fans didn’t know us the year before but this year they did and fans would gather around. It was a lot of fun! Then we’d go run to breakfast or shower real fast and then someone from our label would pick us up at like 9:30am and we would go the radio station and play 3-4 songs and meet everyone and sometimes do a fan meet and greet till around 11:30 or 12pm. Then we will go out to eat somewhere. This was for sure one of the highlights for us because we love food a lot! By 1:00pm we would get back to Warped and then we would have a signing for 30 minutes and then run to 2 more signings after

that. So around 3:30pm we would finish those and get ready for our set on the Journeys stage. The set time is never the same but most of the times we had were after 5pm. After our 30 minute set we take 15 minutes and wash our faces and clean up to then do a fan line for 2 hours. Our fans mean everything to us to we made sure that we met and hugged and signed and took pictures with every single person. We would only leave when there was nobody left. Then by like 8pm we’re done and we would chill on the bus and laugh and eat dinner with friends, usually asleep by midnight. We seriously didn’t have a day off the entire summer till Aug 6th and even on weekends our schedule was just like that. Doesn’t sound glamorous does it? But we love it and are super grateful we get to do this. Sydney, as a female do you think you were treated differently at Warped, than your other band members? I have seen a few interviews about the way females are treated differently by crowds and bands and was interested if you had any stories you could share. Yeah I do, all girls have the usual thing of guys trying to hit on you and flirt and stuff like that, but it’s more about people invading your space as a female where they think you owe them something. One time this guy asked me to meet his girlfriend because she had something really important to tell me in our fan line, so I go over to the side and she come up and kissed me and ran off. That was weird! Most people on Warped tour from the staff and other bands were really cool though. In general it’s how you carry yourself that helps avoid weird situations. Even though I’m only 17 I make sure people know there’s boundaries with me from the get go.
Did you meet any of the bands that have had an influence on you or that Photo: Jonathan Weiner

27

you were a huge fan of? We met Reel Big Fish who we think are a lot of fun. We didn’t get to meet that many bands this year as we were so busy.
What was your biggest highlight of Warped overall? The fans for sure. We heard story after story of fans who are somehow deeply affected by our music in real ways. It’s just hard to explain what that does for us to hear that something we wrote matters to someone and actually makes their life better in some way. It’s really a beautiful thing!

VMA’s After Warped you went to the VMA’s and met some pretty cool musicians, Sydney you were pretty happy to meet Taylor Swift. How rad was that for you? Any other artists that you met that you admired? That was a really fun experience for sure. Taylor is such an inspiration for all of us as somebody really owning their own career and doing it their own way. She was so sweet and knew our songs and had a lot of complimentary things to say. It was surreal for sure!
Other than that how was the night for you? Please tell us all about it! We walked the red carpet and met lots of fellow artists like 5SOS, Katy Perry and Al Roker. Al Roker is seriously one of our favorite people we’ve met. He’s hilarious and genuine. Katy was amazing too. The 5SOS guys were cool but our meeting was super fast.

28

Philippines You recently completed a tour of the Philippines; you seemed to have fun according to your Facebook page. How

many shows did you play there? We played 2 shows, an acoustic show at a mall and a full band show at the only indoor festival called “Bazooka Rocks”. We have a special place in our hearts for the Philippines; they are some of the nicest and warmest people in the world. They knew every word of every song and were just so kind. They would find us everywhere, from our hotel to a mall to restaurants they would be there. It was one of the most fun experiences we’ve ever had.
You were interviewed on SiriusXM Morning Mash Up. (readers can listen to that here). What else did you get up to over there? Other than making fun videos with security guards! Did you have any time for sightseeing? We didn’t get to sight see (sad face). We hope to next time and we definitely will come back there. We loved messing around with the security guards.
You often on Facebook do a “caption this” pic, are you amused by some of the answers? Yes, our fans are creative and so funny. They make us laugh a lot!

guitar part and everyone writes lyrics. We grew up in this very creative household where we just always created so it’s never been something hard to do, we just decide to do it and out it pours. Some songs can take a long time and others can take 30 minutes, it just depends on the song. “Cool Kids” took a long time, we did lots of tweaks and that one really felt special so we took our time. We had no idea it would be the single, people just responded so much to that song that it did something on its own.
Who came up with the idea of the Cool Kids video? When filming was there any funny stories you can share? Mark Pellington the director pitched the idea to us and we loved it. It’s directly taken from our song and we really wanted the point to come across that everyone matters and that when you accept yourself and be yourself that’s what makes you cool!
I hope you are having a well deserved break! We aren’t we’re in Europe right now doing promotion. But we were in Hawaii for a few days like 2 weeks ago and that was a nice break. Thanks Sydney! Wish you well for your future.

Can you tell us about your writing process? Is it a whole band approach or is it one person? It’s always the full band, we never write the same way and any idea can come from any of us. Graham is great at melodies, and sometimes Noah will have a super cool Photo: Jonathan Weiner

Their song “Cool Kids” is a dreamy anthem that is currently number 15 on

the iTunes charts, no doubt by the time you read this it will be higher. They played “Cool Kids” on Conan in June (you can watch that here) and the music video has currently received nearly 5 million views. Earlier this year they were named an MTV “Artist to Watch”. Echosmith has toured with Owl City, Twenty One Pilots, Young The Giant and Neon Trees which has given them the chance to gain more fans through their energetic packed live set. In April, Echosmith was featured on MTV’s hit comedy series Awkward. You can read about that here. You can watch all their music videos on their YouTube here Press Quotes about Echosmith

“…how awesome and polished they are in such a brief time on this planet” – Huffington Post “Of all the bands looking to make noise on the Woodies, though, Echosmith seemed most ready to break out.” – Entertainment Weekly “A band you need to know about…If they are not on your radar yet, they should be, since their song ‘Come Together’ is a dreamy but solid tune.” – PopCrush “Talking Dreams would make great listening for an impressionable young person— but it’s not for kids only.” – Alternative Press “Sydney leads the group with her stunning voice...” – Seventeen On “Surround You”: “The hushed track captures the quartet at its most intimate, with singer Sydney Sierota leading the tender love song. “Darling, I’m thrilled to have you by my side,” she sings, and the song lifts from lonesome acoustic chords to a chamber-pop climax.” – MTV Buzzworthy “Romantic, dreamy and whimsical...the vocals on the album are stunning and the harmonies melt like butter.” – Buzznet Written by Jen @justjenrees

interview with

r e dDeatah bynStpereoalm Zebrahead and

By Jen @justjenrees

I h ad the ch ance to interview Dan Palm er ab out ju gglin g b ein g in two b and s, and got talkin g ab out so mu ch m ore. Hu ge th ank s to Dan for takin g tim e out b efore a gig to grab a drink with m e. It turne d into a lot of l au gh s. Hi Dan, got my phone on I think… Testing Testing Testing 123 (Laughing) Haha I was wondering how you juggle being two bands with all the tours and practice etc. It is sometimes a little hard but I figure it out, you know right now with Zebrahead (pronounced ZEEEbrahead) we have a little downtime with tours and we are actually writing a new record and the tour with DBS is only 12 days so I thought ok I can be gone for 12 days so I’ve did that and it was easy. ZH has not been touring much at all, we do a couple of shows now and then, so that is easier. And SW! (Laughing) So when you are writing, is it as a group? Yeah well what we do is go a few different ways, recently in the studio it was just been Ben and I as the others have been

34

so busy. So Ben and I get the BPM’s, the clicks on the ProTools whatever and write music to it. So we throw ideas back and forward and we have been doing that lately. There are also times where we all get together and get in the same room and write and I much rather prefer that as it is way easier. Is it more pop punk this album do you think? Ah a bit of both, a combination of things, we’ve been writing so much new material, what we are going to do is sift through it and work out whatever is best. Yeah SP do that, they wrote 90 songs for their last album. Yeah that is insane. Most of what we write won’t make it but it is fun writing anyway, like you might write a good part of a new song and that past of the song is great but then you find another part of a different song that is better, you know

Photo: Ron van Rutten Photography what I mean? Then we kinda mix and match. We do that with lyrics and melodies too. So what do you two bands have in common? Well we all like to party! Yeah I had picked up on that! We all like to hang around the stage and drink a lot. Well you have a barman on stage….. Yeah we do! So is Marc your manager? He is our tour manager yeah. Yeah I noticed he was playing in another band in America at the moment. Yeah he plays guitar in a band called Patent Pending. OK, oh with Jaret from Bowling for Soup? His band People on Vacation? Oh they were on tour together but not this time.

Recently you were here on Soundwave, what were you highlights? Other than meeting me of course. Well that is it! Conversation over, no more to say! (Laughing) I loved the acoustic set that you played at the tent. Oh yeah the tent! We did one at the tattoo shop as well. That’s right I could not make that one as I was working. So you have some real die hard Zebrahead fans here. Yeah we do! I’ve seem quite a few of them on this tour which is kinda cool, it was fun seeing them again and hanging out and having drinks with them. So do you have the same for Death by Stereo, like fan group? No not really the fans are a lot less organised that say Callum from ZH Australia.

35

So touring wise, are there any countries that you have not been to yet that you want to go? Yeah I want to go to Brazil, we have been to a few countries in South America but never Brazil, I want to go to Cuba as well, I want to go where they don’t have McDonalds, I want to go to Thailand, Indonesia. The only country I don’t want to go to is Antarctica. Yeah that is fair. Metallica did a concert down there. Yeah that’s right, no way I would! What do you think of The Voice, The X Factor, do you think that there is a future for music in what you do or will it become just winners of comps? What you mean rockbands? No like winners of the shows. Well what can you do. People are going to watch it if the ratings are high, if the ratings go down then they won’t make any money then they will stop. I am watching The Voice as I really like Joel Madden, that is the only reason I am watching it…… Ha perfect…. Have you got any advice for the bands that are starting out and struggling to get exposure? Yeah stop playing and go back to college!

36

(Laughing). Keep playing, I think a lot of bands perform before they are ready and put out records before they are ready, I guess because technology makes it so easier. I mean you can record at home and put it out but my advice is to make sure of yourself before putting it out. There are so many bands out there and that first impression is everything. If you put out a crappy first record why would anyone listen to your second? So make sure your first record is the best that you could put out. That is great advice! People’s attenand I at the tion span’s Dan is so small these days, if they don’t like what they hear in 30 seconds they jump to something else. It is easier to move around so that makes it a little harder. So what bands do you have the most fun touring with? We have done so many tours with Less Than Jake, I

love those guys. Yeah they are great! The side wave in Melbourne was one of the best concerts I’ve been to, I mean Bowling for Soup are one if my favourite bands so with ZH and LTJ it was a perfect concert for me. I really enjoying hanging out with them. We are going to do lots more tours with them. It seems like every show we play is with Less Than Jake.

Have you done anything with Reel Big Fish? Yeah we just did a huge tour of the UK with them with also Less Than Jake! They are super nice dudes. Yeah they were at Warped and I got to meet them they were lovely. Funny guys. If you could pick one song, any song in the world that you could of written what song would that be? Final Count Down. Interesting, most people say oh I don’t know can I think about that one?? It is the world’s greatest song!

In regards to e interview Simple Plan, have you ever met them? Yep! I can remember where but we did Warped Tour with them in 2002 and met them at the gym, they were working out, they are really nice guys.

Anything else you can tell us about meeting Simple Plan? Yeah I know that David hires Ferrari’s in the towns that he goes to and drives them around, that is pretty cool. How long did it take to grow your moustache? 4 or 5 years now. I trim it and stuff. Now I am stuck with it. Does it drive you mad? No not at all. It keeps my upper lip really warm. It is a lip sweater. Do you do anything like music management? I like to help other bands write music, like jamming and stuff, I like to play guitar solos on other peoples songs, I don’t care who it is!

Dan and I at the interview Do you like their music? Yeah I do. Fav song? Ummmm Final countdown? NO A SIMPLE PLAN SONG! Haha well track 6. Of which album? Um… Album 5? No 4. Good as there is no album 5! (Laughing - think the drinks we were having were taking effect)

So thanks Dan, that is pretty much it! Thanks for your time and catching up for a drink with me. Hope the show goes well tonight.

The entire tour went really well for Death By Stereo however the Tour Promoter never paid them for their time out here as promised. You can watch here the video of their response when they found out.

Threshold I n t e r v i e w w i t h Ri c h a r d W e s t By Jen @justjenrees

Ten albums into a career that began in London’s leafy suburbs back in 1989, it’s time this situation was reassessed. Sure, Heavy Metal and Progressive Rock are the cornerstones of the group’s sound, but as proven by the consummate quality of their last several albums, THRESHOLD are a classic Hard Rock band, built upon high-quality musicianship, enormous quantities of musical light and shade and, above all, memorable, hummable songs. Few bands are capable of gracing the stage of a leather ‘n’ studs gathering such as Bloodstock, as Threshold did in 2004, or conversely the Hard Rock

40

all-dayer the Firefest, at which they played three years later. Their music is eloquent and deeply melodic without relying upon the usual gratuitous levels of power and repetitive twiddly bits. “The key to THRESHOLD is songs,” believes long-serving keyboard player Richard West. “By all means we have all those extra ingredients, but without the song you’ve nothing.” “I’ve no objection to the label,” elaborates Damian Wilson, among the finest singers of the current Hard Rock scene, “it only bothers me when causing people, who might otherwise enjoy us, to shut them-

selves off. Nobody likes being pigeonholed.”

you are going to have line up changes, people’s lives are going to change but you just keep on turning up. That has certainly been my philosophy and the “Since the band joined Nuclear Blast same with Karl our guitarist and it is true we’ve tried to make the ultimate THRESHOLD album,” Richard West nods. as we are the only two left within the original line up. Everyone else has come “I love what we’ve done with For The Journey, but I can’t wait for the next one. and gone, our singer has come and gone three times and he is back again now. I’m so happy that there were just two Yeah I read about that. I do think that is years between albums instead of five.” the trick, you look at a band like Queen I got the chance through Nuclear Records and the whole longevity, the same 4 guys all the way through, but they had times to interview Richard about their new album. I really enjoyed chatting to Richard, when they could not stand to be in the same room together but they kept turnhe can sure talk! So we got on well! If it was not for the 20 minute limit I think we ing up and we are glad they did as even though they went though a rocky patch in would of talked a lot longer! the middle but in the end they were back playing beautiful music together. Yes that is very true. We try and do the same, you know we live in a society that everything Hi Richard, how are you going? is so disposable, you don’t like your wife, Good thanks how are you? you get another one, you don’t like your Great. life you get another one. That’s right. I You guys started out in the late 80’s and don’t think you can do that, you need to are still together making great music, in get through those difficult times and then my opinion better music now than then. come through it stronger than ever and I hope that is what we have done with Thanks a lot! Threshold. With the new album I think it What do you think your secret is? is the best thing we ever did so I am glad We kept going, I recall watching a TV that we kept going. Yes the album seems show a while ago and someone was to be about the journey of your life over saying “What’s the secret for you having the past few years. Yeah the new album a long marriage?” and the guy said, “I is about perseverance, forgiveness and keep showing up” (Laughing) I think it is honesty and all the things that help you the same for Threshold, over the twenmake that long journey. Yes very true! ty years you going to have arguments,

41

“For the Journey” is the third album you have done with Nuclear Blast who seems to have motivated you to write and record in a timelier manner for your fans enjoyment, can you explain to us how you guys have changed and what were you like before? Do you mean musically? Yeah, I read that you guys were very lazy before….. (Laughing…..) only writing when you could be bothered….. Ha! That was a flippant comment. We were not lazy we were just busy with other things. It was a funny period I think, the end of our period with Inside Out, they were a great label for us, we just reached a point where the relationships were broken down, certainly our singer, he had a bit of a drinking period at the time and it wasn’t so pleasant to be around each other, like mistakes made on stage due to the drinking and so it was not such a fun place to be, so we ended up quite slowing down, we ended up having three years between Subsurface and Dead Reckoning that we did with Nucleur Blast. I think it just was that we did not want to be in the same room together. We reached a point where we thought if we want to keep going with this we need to change a few things and go through a whole new chapter, so we changed labels and we’ve change management companies and various things. You know that is not the answer really, I think the answer should have been- Get comfortable in your skin, get comfortable with each other and do that whole honesty, perseverance and forgiveness thing. We could of carried on but we were younger back then and we were looking to make things work and we changed it all around, the singer left, the guitarist left, it is peoples mind set that change things and things will keep on changing. I don’t think it is always the best thing.

42

head all day. Which is a good thing. Was that the plan from the start for that to be the lead song? Yes as soon as Karl sent me the instrumental for that song it sounded like it had all the elements for a great bombastic Threshold opener, give it a big chorus, it had a great riff and had a great energy and momentum to it. It also had a great section for solos, you know we could stretch our fingers a bit and go a bit prog metal . We knew right from the get go that was the best one. I think the other options were maybe Turn to Dust but that was a little bit more poppy, a bit less prog metal, I did not think it was the right way to introduce ourselves. We also thought of using The Box because it is a beautiful soaring epic but we thought it we put that first it is all downhill from there so we kept it until a bit later. I think that was a wise decision. What is the story behind you buying back a keyboard for the second time for this song? Are you now going to keep it? Can you explain the story a little more? The third time actually, over the years, I’ve used so many keyboards on these records and either you end up with a pile of keyboards gathering dust or you just move on, you sell the old one and bring in the new one. That’s what I have intended to do but then I think I really need that sound and this is the third time of buying it back and I am not selling it again! (Laughing) Trinity it is called, it is really old keyboard from the 90’s, it just has a couple of sounds on there that I need. It keep’s getting cheaper each time I buy it so I’ve probably made a profit.

I think most people if not everyone will be able to relate to ‘Lost in Your Memory’, I love the lyrics, you are a very talented song writer! Thanks very much. The chorus would be a great mantra for I listened to Watchtower on the Moon first and loved it but was carefully not to me to say to myself when I get stressed over the smaller stuff. I am actually a assume it would be the stand out song teacher of teenagers and they always for me, however after listening to the rest of the album it still is the stand out worry about the small stuff and can’t song and the one that I am singing in my see the bigger picture, I am actually

trying to grow in difficult conditions, trythinking of playing the song to them ing to put their roots down in a dry arid to help them to see the bigger picture, desert or trying to grow in a place that is that what is happening right now, even so dark it is not getting what it needs but though it is really stressful, you will look at the same time it makes the roots grow back and it will be lost in your memory stronger as they have to grow deeper to like a faded photograph. Something just find their source and you end up with a clicked in my head when I read that and stronger plant. And that is kind of what listen to that. the song is really about, you are going Wow thank you I am really proud and through a tough time right now but when humble about that at the same time. It you come though it you will be stronger. is one of those songs that, well I’ve been So it is a song about you wanting to get through quite a few things in my personal to another place, you have to go through life that has made me have to persevere something to get there. Yeah I can reand the verses are analogies of plants late to that with that in my personal life

43

but we won’t go into that now! I think we are roughly the same age…. 21. Yeah 21! (Laughing…) yeah it is one of those songs that I had to go through it to write it. Of all the songs on the album it is the one that I am the proudest of. Musically too I am very proud of it, I just sat at the piano and try to find a beautiful changes and sets of melodies that will suit the emotional content of the lyrics. I think that is one of my proudest moments writing that song. Well I am sorry that you had to go through that but I am glad that you can share it and help others including me. Thanks very much.

44

and what he does is he will write a whole instrumental part of a whole piece, all the instruments, the drums, the guitars, the bass, the whole thing and then he will give that to me and then I will write the lyrics and the melodies to it. So slightly different process there.

The Box goes for a whopping 12 minutes, was that planned when you wrote it or did it evolve into that? That’s a long song! That is one of the ones that Karl wrote so I can only speak for him really but yes it is normally planned to have a long song. You have a sense that a piece of music is going to be too long for 3 or 4 minute Hold on keep yourself together format and I know with The Box he wrote There are better sights to see the end section first , the beautiful stringline and ending to the song and he knew Hold on this will all become that it would be the end of an epic. Then A faded photograph you start by building and building it and discovering what is going to work as a Lost in your memory song. It is lovely, it takes a long time obviously to write a long song but it is such How does your typical writing process go? Do you write them on your own? You a beautiful thing to do. You just have all this extra space and all this extra places said you sit at your piano. you can go. You can let all the ideas flow It is 50/50 Yeah I just write, not normally at the piano, they are going around in my and fall out instead of that pop format it is lovely writing long tracks as you get to head and I will find a place where I am not distracted by life and where my mind explore a tell a story as I did on The Box, can freely wander, like walking in the hills but in a 3 minute song there is not really time to do that. I better have another or it might just be in the shower, it is just listen to it, I did not get to listen to it as one of those times we you are free to many times as the others for obvious drift off into your thoughts and I try and reasons! capture those melodies. If it is a piano ballad at some stage I will sit at the piano You mentioned pop before, I was going and start working it though in what key to ask you what are your views on shows that it will fit into and try some different like the Voice or the X Factor rather than keys. Most of the writing is just done in my head it feels like I have a 48 track tape working your way up in the music scene. recorder in there and I build things up lay- We have many young Australian bands that are struggling to get exposure er by layer as they go round and around. It drives my wife quite nuts as often I am who are really talented. What are your lost in my little recorder in my head. Your thoughts on those shows? I think it has its place, I mean some of poor wife! That would drive me crazy if those singers have been singers for years my husband did that! (Laughing) She they are exploring their dreams and that is very patient and very supportive, it’s is cool, there is no problem with that. It is lovely. I get to the point where the song funny, I look back on my record collection, is built up in my head and I will go to the and any of these bands that have won studio and try and get it on real tape, the these shows, do I have any of their CD’S other half of the album is written by Karl

the answer is No. So even though it has it’s place it is not what I got into music for. Music is about the whole package the song, the writers, the players and everything and I’ve never wanted to buy them however good they are. Even looking at Adam Lambert going out with Queen, he was on American Idol, I think he came second, sure he has a great voice but he has nothing to do with Queen and to me that is a very strange thing, it is like watching a theatre show of what Queen used to be. I am going to see that concert soon. I am sure it will be a good show, I mean I saw We Will Rock You show but there is something about that authenticity of Freddie, he lived and breathed every note of those songs, he created them, he sat at the piano and wrote them, that is the stuff I love. That whole artistic pack-

age, I’ve never been into the whole manufactured thing where you pick someone who has a good voice and is good looking, a team of writers and marketing team behind them, it is all about commercial product rather than artistic integrity. Any plans to come out to Australia for a tour? Have you been out here much? I would love to. Sadly we have no plans to at the moment but I would love to do Soundwave so hopefully yeah I would love to! I can dream! Great thanks Richard for your time! Thanks Jen it was a pleasure to meet you. Bye. Ok bye now.

SAVE THE CLOCK TOWER

Interview with brett kennedy By Jen @justjenrees Hi Brett, thanks for taking the time out to answers all these questions. I interviewed you guys after Warped last year, seems that you have been busy since then. You have had a hectic touring schedule over the last year, Warped, SW and In Hearts Wake as well as others…. when did you find the time to write the tracks? Reality Redefined was written in February through to May when we recorded it, however some of the ideas came well before that. How does you writing process go, do you write all the songs or is a shared effort? Do you scribble lyrics on receipts?

Our guitarists Jordan and Logan are responsible for a majority of the structure, then drums and bass are written around that. This time around I found myself continuously adding to the “Notes” section of my phone with new lyrics. You headed to Sydney to work once again with Electric Sun Studios after the success of your self titled 2013 release. Did you find that using the same Production studio allowed you to keep the sound that you had imagined? Working with Stevie Knight again really allowed us to explore and create this record. He understands us having previously worked on our releases, so we were

47

all able to push the envelope together and produce a sound not commonly put out by the studio. It was good that you went into the studio with a sense of open mindedness from everyone, did that open new doors for you to experiment with your sound? In my mind that’s what made the record. There are a lot of new techniques and sounds we used on this record, and that only came from trial and error. Rather than dismiss things that were voiced by members, they were tried before being scrapped. Most ideas actually feature in encourage thought and reflection while the record. keeping much of what is written open to interpretation. On a less serious note, Brett, you said that this EP is made up of we believe we’ve progressed our sound 5 individual tracks each with their own and musicianship with ‘REALITY REDEpersonalities but still have some comFINED’, and it should translate well in a mon threads that bind the record tolive setting.” Can you give our readers a gether, can you explain a bit more about quick run down of your personal, society that? and global change you mean? I think from the songs themselves, while It’s everything from the very inner and they each sound different, they still retain personal details of my life through to what could be identified as our sound. We worldwide injustices I have no control enjoy writing different styles, but its imover. What I see and relate to would be portant that we can tie them all together completely different to the next person to make a consistent record. The title I because we all see the world in our own really like, who came up with that one? way. As for specific examples, it’s things That was my doing, and it came pretty like self-doubt and worth, the behaviour early on in my lyric writing. I could just of my peers and youth, and decisions see the themes I was addressing and made by the Government of this country knew it was a change from the strong which I address. positivity messages from our 2013 release. I like that you offer fans free downloads, what is the motivation for this? Do you Your quote in the press release, feel that you can reach more fans that “As time and life progresses, things way? change and so does our perception of It’s just hard to charge someone for our what is happening and what is importmusic when our sound was still develant. This record is a diary of personoping. We also didn’t want to impact on al, societal and global change and the who could access our music by putting impacts they’ve had on me these past up a barrier such as money. We hope that couple of years. I’m not trying to inspire ultimately this decision has led to more drastic change in masses, but rather enjoyable shows and stronger support.

48

You streamed this early on killthestereo last night, was that planned or a last minute idea? It was a little last minute, but we had always planned to stream. We are grateful KYS jumped on board to give people an early taste. I think I like “Hideaway Revolution” best, out of the 5 tracks which one is the one that you most connect to? We’ve only played two tracks live, so once we’ve jammed the entire five I will have a better idea of what really connects with me! Will you be announcing a tour soon to play this EP live? Our farewell tour will be held in late January! Which song do you think will be the song that you will love to perform live the most?

I’m hoping The Great Charade goes down well, as I really enjoy the chorus. Thanks Brett. Sadly the day after I interviewed Brett the band posted this on their Facebook page.

“Our personal journeys through life are too ambitious to confine to Sierra any longer. Please embrace this positive realisation of ours, and continue to enjoy and share what we’ve created collectively. We send love to all who made this band together we dreamed. Farewell details coming soon for early 2015.”

debuting at number 4 on the Billboard charts as well as the single reaching number 1…you must be stocked about that! Yeah sure are! You have a close relationship with producer Brendan O’Brien, what is it like working with him? We do yeah, we have worked with him before on our last album and yeah we have become good friends with him, he is a great producer, he is a musician too, a guitar player, so we have a good working Breaky Heart way!! relationship. I think if we were working with a non musician it would not work as (Laughing…) Can you explain to our readers the meswell. It is really good to work with him. sage of that song? Yeah it is very just much about relationYour first single off the album “Word of ship security, and bad relationships and Weapons” was written a long time ago. I guess how people can be hurtful and You held off it’s release, was that song used to set the tone for the album “Iso- the whole Sticks and Stones analogy that is completely false, words can be really late and Medicate”? powerful especially from someone that Yeah actually we recorded two new knows you well. songs for the “best of“ last year and we actually did not want our record comThis album has a different feel to it, pany to cash in, that is not fair to fans it feels more personal, would that be so we decided that one of those songs, ‘Word Of Weapons’ would be the song we something that you agree with? held back and put it on the album. (some I think so yeah, I mean every album answers inaudible due to interference on stands alone and that I feel that this one the line.) I am glad that we did! It is doing is a little heavier than the last, a lot of dark sort of stuff but at the same time it really well for us. is incredibly melodic so that yeah I think this album is my favourite, I know every I really love the song “Word of Weapband always says that, hey our new alons” and it’s message. bum is our favourite but I really do feel Thank you. like that. (some answers not written due It was my fav before I heard “Crash”. to inaudible words.) That is my fav too. Actually? Recording wise it only took 16 days. Yeah. It has been stuck in my head for a while That is amazing! You must of worked really hard! Did it all just fall into place? now, In a good way not like an Achy

51

I am blown away that an album of this quality can actually be that rad after 16 days! Yeah it was a combination of a couple of things really, we had all the songs ready and we spent a lot of time in the studio so you become a better player, it is different than playing live you know, it is a very different mind set and the more you do the better you get and you can’t do an album in that sort of time without using technology. It is a huge help in the studio. We were after a live organic sound, yeah I think it was a combination of all those things. I do think that we are pretty good studio players, and technology and having a great producer helps. I think that is how we are going to do our recording from now on. Good Idea! You guys have been together as a band since 1999, what do you think the secret to staying together for so long? Um I don’t know, I think actually it is like being in a relationship, it is almost like a marriage, you live together on a tour bus like months out of the year so it is a case of getting along and gel musically. We respect each other, we respect people’s space and yeah it is like pick your battles, don’t sweat the little shit and basically get along, that is where I think that what ever makes a marriage works, it is pretty much the key to make the band work. You guys have an action packed touring schedule, any plans to head to Australia? Yeah nothing is set in stone yet but it is something that we are talking about, we are pretty much spoken for, we are do-

52

ing a tour with Godsmack in a couple of weeks, and we are going to Europe. Then we might think about coming to Australia, it has been along time since we have been there, it would be huge to come out to play the new album, we always have the best time there. Much as we want to play shows we also want to come and hang out and have a good time. Thanks heaps for your time Dale, best of luck with your album and tour. Great to talk to you. Thanks Jen, nice to talk to you too. Cheers. Like Seether on Facebook here.

FACTS ABOUT THEIR MUSIC With Simple Plan, Authority Zero, and Sean Paul a song of Less than Jake featured in the movie Grind. The song was Look What Happened. They also performed ‘I think I love you’ in the Movie Scream 2 in 1997. Their song ‘All my friends are Metalheads’ was in Digimon the Movie and the video game Pro Skater 4.

Losing Streak (1996)

In 2008 Vinnie said “When you are in a pop punk band in your 16th year, sometimes you don’t fit in the modern music industry. You need to be a shiny new penny. We didn’t feel like the rest of our years as a band should fit in that narrow parameter. ... All I do know is that we’re writing songs now and they seem to have the spirit of a tempo in mind, all very speedy but once we hit the record button they may be slower” He wanted to combine ska punk and pop punk in every song on their GNV FLA album. They toured the UK with Zebrahead to promote this album.

In With the Out Crowd (2006)

With a band name like Less than Jake, there must be a story about why they called themselves this. Their name came from Vinnies dog, Jake who was treated better than anyone else therefore everyone was Less than Jake.

Pezcore (1995)

ess Than Jake are a ska punk band originating from Florida USA. They formed in 1992. The current band members are Chris (vocals and guitar), Roger (Vocals and Bass) Vinnie (drums and Lyrics), Buddy (trombone) and Peter (saxophone).

 exclusive warped tour inter Written by Jen @justjenrees

Warped and why? Our 365 Warped Tour show in West Palm Beach Florida. It was great and the entire tour wore tshirts celebrating the day. Which was the worst show that you played at this year or were they all good? They were all great actually! Best place with the best crowd? Maybe New Jersey? Hard to say as I said before they were all pretty great. Take us through a day of Warped Tour. We wake up, drink coffee, poop, find food, watch crowd walk in and play for 30 minutes then get drunk. Pretty simple.

Thanks for taking time out of your hectic schedule to answer my questions. It is freezing down under, what is it like where you are? It’s hot and rainy right now in Gainesville. I interviewed you after Soundwave this year, I did meet you but you wouldn’t remember! I saw you at your sidewave as well. I am glad that your US fans can enjoy your shows but can’t wait till your next tour. Thanks. How many times have you done Warped Tour now? 372 Warped Tour shows total. What city has been the highlight for you on

54

You guys signed stuff for free, does that mean that other bands were charging for signatures? Some bands had fans purchase an item to sign and wouldn’t sign items that weren’t purchased. To us, that is against the point of what Warped is all about. Just our opinion. Please tell us some stories of mischief that went on, or tell us two or three! I know you would have some! We were napping most of the summer. Playing at different times each concert, was that annoying of did you think that it was good to mix up for the bands that usually play earlier times as they got some late times as well? Well Warped has done the same thing for 20 years so not so young. More tradition. 1. Last One Out of Liberty City 2. The Ghosts of Me and You

Was this your set list? Do you play the same one each show? It was around that basically. We changed some songs daily. What is next for Less Than Jake? Canada tour and The Fest in the US. And a full US tour in the beginning of 2015. How can fans keep in touch with you? Facebook and Twitter works! Got any new merch since we last spoke? HEAPS of it. On our webstore. Any messages for our readers from Less than Jake? Take us to your leaders and make them give us beers.

Thanks, Jen

Fresh Fruit Interview by Jen @justjenrees

spectral fires

Our second band in our Fresh Fruit Feature is Spectral Fires. I meet their manager Bianca while having a coffee before work one day. I commented on her Green Day shirt and we chatted. I caught up with the boys from the band.

How did you guys all meet and form the band? Harry: Lachie (drums), Jack and I have been pals since high school and Lachie and I have been playing in bands together since we were young enough to be terrible no matter how much time we spent rehearsing those Sum 41 covers. He and Jack and I were destined to be in Hey, you guys are just starting out, great this band and when it came time to find to interview a band that has a great fulike-minded individuals on guitar and ture ahead of you. bass, the obvious people to persuade/

58

pressure to join us were my younger brother Jonah and Lachie’s younger brother Daniel (who themselves had played together in bands in high school). It’s quite the family affair. What bands are your inspiration? Jack: I know that this answer changes depending on which member you talk to, we all have quite varying tastes in music. One common band that we all agree is a massive inspiration and definitely influenced the music we make is Carpathian. When they released ‘Isolation’ it changed the way that I thought about hardcore and seeing Martin the vocalist perform that live was incredibly inspiring. In terms of your musical direction did you decide on your genre or did it just form when you started playing together? Harry: We were pretty much planning Spectral Fire for years before we actually all played a song together (other things just took priority in the interim) and the idea for the sound changed over that time – for a while we were set on being a serious metalcore band (in the vein of Parkway Drive, The Amity Affliction, etc) called Forever’s End! We came around on a more raw, less heavy, punk driven sound though, so when we wrote our EP, we revisited old ideas to tweak them and went off in a direction we liked more and felt gave us a little more scope to express ourselves in ways wanted to. It all rested on Jack being able to do something with his voice other than Cookie Monster growls – turns out he can yell into the mic! You competed in the Battle of the Bands

late last year, what was the outcome of that? Jack: We did. It was late last year and we managed to win a day in the studio at The Basin Productions which ended up being where we recorded our whole EP. We also got to play at the Corner Hotel as part of one of the Melbourne Fresh Festival gigs, which was fun just for the fact that we’ve seen so many of our favourite artists there, from The Matches to Defeater, Gyroscope to Aston Shuffle and about 30 others.

“We came around on a more raw, less heavy, punk driven sound” You took 4 days to record your debut EP at The Basin Productions, how stoked were you with the final product? Harry: Super stoked. I mean, there are of course small things we’d change if we could, and the standard of debut recordings from bands these days is very high, but the experience was really positive (thanks to Matt at Basin Productions) and the sound we got we’re really pleased with. Hopefully it’s not just us… So excited to go one (or two) better with release #2 though! Love the cover of the EP, simple but effective, who’s idea was it to go with the spray paint with 5 colours.

59

Jack: They are actually blow pens..! We always wanted to keep the cover very DIY and simple as well as making each one unique. Harry was smart enough to use his love of blowing on things to make each EP unique! You played a few gigs now, including one at The Tote upstairs with The Approach, The Evercold & Myyth. How do you find the crowds here in Melbourne? Jack: We have played with all those guys a couple of times and that in particular

“we understand you have to put yourself out there when no one cares who you are” was a very fun show. The crowds usually consist of mates who I can only convince to come by telling them they can have my rider! Haha na really well actually. We seem to get a lot positive feedback from all the new comers and it always gets pretty rowdy and energetic at shows. Your EP ‘Old Haunts’ is available for free on Bandcamp, are you finding that is a good way of getting your music out there? Harry: Obviously it’s nice to get some return on something you spend a lot of money on, but we’re not in it for that and

60

we’re pragmatists in that we understand you have to put yourself out there when no one cares who you are. We originally charged $5 for our EP online but quickly realized that was a mistake. Way more people will download something they don’t have to pay for (as we’ve seen) and it’s all about getting as many people hearing the music as possible, not getting as much money as possible. Tell us about your tour that you are planning in November. Hitting the road in a van? Harry: We couldn’t truthfully call it a ‘tour’ – more of a little excursion into NSW – but it will be our first time playing outside Victoria so we’re hugely excited about that! My parents will hopefully be trusting enough to lend us their people mover and we’ll cram into it like a true bunch of road-worn rockstars with, packed lunches for three days and some cold Carlton Draughts. I actually can’t wait. How did you get involved with Dead End Girl Management? Jack: I saw a post on Facebook that she was looking for a band to play a show in Ultima, which we jumped on. The show turned out to be in the backyard of a pub in the middle of Victoria. It is still probably the craziest show to date and we ended up getting along real well with Bianca who runs Dead End Girl. We were lucky enough for her to like us and what we are doing enough to wanna become our manager. Thanks guys, look forward to keeping up with your news and best of luck with your future.
