Vertical Transparency by: Jenny Fetveit Marion Engevold Dromnes Marte Valderaune

Imagine a volume of 10m x 10m x 10m, that is only to be lit through the ceiling. The volume contains a workshop, exhibition area, a small office area and a place to have a cup of coffee. What kind of lighting would a place like this need? How to approach this kind of space? How to make the lighting in this area special? The following project is a study of how this might be done. In early face of this case study we found inspiration in glass tubes in a laboratory shelf. We tried to translate the expression of this into architecture, and to explore the possibilities in this kind of construction concerning lighting. As a result of these studies, we created a glass tube ceiling. The focus in this study is manly the lighting effects and the light quality the roof creates, rather than how it would actually be built. How would it feel to spend a day surrounded by ever changing sparkling daylight? What if the daylight was to be displayed as art? Constantly changing with the time of day and seasons of the year? Could a whole room be a chandelier? These questions led us through the studies and left us with a fairy expressive result and a spectacular roof construction. The roof contains of a steel load bearing structure, with transparent tubes in different diameters and length attached. These tubes are enclosed in both ends. A glazed roof on top covers the whole construction. As a response to the sun altitude throughout the year at this location as is set to be Trondheim, Norway, the roof is tilted by 10 degrees facing south. As a result of sun altitude, latitude and the angel of the roof construction, the sunlight penetration varies throughout the year, and the rooms appetency are strongly influenced by this. In the summer, with the up to 55 degrees altitude, the sunlight will penetrate deeply into the room and will almost reach the floor by the highest sun altitude. In the winter the sun does not reach higher than 10 degrease above the horizon, and by that, there will be no sun pattern on the walls. Instead the roof construction captures the light, resulting in a spectacular, sparkling expression. The focus is no longer on the walls as the ceiling is now the queen of the room. To create spatial contrasts we made the entrance high and narrow, with more limited daylight access. By these contrasts the zones emphasizes each other. From here you might turn left, in to the main room passing through two thick concrete walls, entering under the mezzanine, to experience the light exhibited on the ten meters high wall in front of you. Optional you might choose to experience the narrow staircase, walking upwards along the coloured wall. By a gap in the roof the light is led down along the coloured wall, creating a dramatic coloured atmosphere and glare. At the top of the staircase, you again enter the main room, but this time experience the art of daylight from a higher mezzanine, and in that way be closer to the sparkling chandelier. Further, by creating the washroom, the aim was to transforming an ordinary situation into an extraordinary sparkling daylight experience. Imagine having a private moment, powdering your nose, in a 2x2x10 metre high room. Imagine sitting down, looking up to the roof filled with light tubes: the private ÂŹÂŹchandelier. By testing different colours, we found they had a dramatic impact on both the impression of the narrow staircase, and the main room as you see the colour from here. As the light is the main focus in this project, we found it best emphasised by the blue and its cool light temperature.
