As I walk through the streets of Porto I recognize the city is like a collage of colours, shapes and lived life. Layers on layers with history and never ending changes embraces me as I let myself get lost in the spatial diversity of this old port of Portugal. Traces from bygone times have never been more present. Narrow alleys slipping around the next corner, stair leading to secrets and a roadway promising surprises just around this very next corner. If I just take the time to discover them. The site for this project is an infill next to the river, perfectly orientated towards the river and the south. In the rear the site is limited by old stonework structures. Once there used to be a connection between the site and a monastery in the rear, but this arcade are totay closed off, hidden and forgotten.

I will try to grasp the soul of the city, to capture the diversity and the qualities of this rich townscape, and I will try to bring some of them into my project as a response to the context of Porto. I re-establish the connection to the monastery and the rest of the city, by reopening the arcade and disconnect the to rear buildings from each other. By doing this I establish a flow through the site, and entry from two sides; a connection and a locus. An alley of stairs and secrets to discower are established. By this the site respond the diversity of the city. The new construction I introduce to the site is aligning to the street line, and it creates a shaded back yard towards the old stonework walls. To protect from the harsh sun the building have a cladding of adjustable steel panels. These panels are perforated to maintain contact to the street and to be able to get light and air inside while. The glazed sliding doors behind these panels are disconnected from them, to enable ventilation control. At the same time the perforating gives the facade life and changes throughout the day and year as a direct response to climatic changes of the mount of year and time of the day.

To walk around in the project is like walking through the city.

Re- establish the connection to monastery and the rest of the city in the north by re opening the closed of arcade. This will disconnect the rear corner buildings. I chose to open up the facade between the existing window openings, to let more light into the room.
