Caversham Artisan & Farmers Market

Craft is not highly appreciated in oxford compared to lon don. There isn’t many opportunity for local crafters to have working space and a place to sell their creativity and artwork. I hope that my incubator could help and provide local crafter more opportunity to show it to the public.

FOR CRAFTERS

HOW OUR INCUBATORS WORK?

Handmade stuffs not only increase living index and life satisfaction of people, but also provide an opportunity to bring people together. Art binds. Culture generates social capital and strengthens a community’s character. Art brings people together physically — at galleries, mu seums, performance spaces — and culturally, through its capacity to tell a community’s shared story, to inspire reflection, and form connections that transcend differences.

The studios have 24/7 access, 365 days a year. All have natural light, electricity and broadband access. The majority are shared by between two and five people, though there are some single studios. We take time and care to find studio pairings which best meet the needs of all makers involved.

At Cockpit Arts we work with craft businesses at different levels – supporting start-ups taking their first steps and helping mid-career and established businesses to accelerate growth. Our incubators are specifically tailored to help talented makers who are developing creatively – and we get great results.

Both of our incubators feature:

• Meeting Room hire

In addition to raising profile, with our support, makers’ turnover and profits at Cockpit Arts have increased yearonyear since we introduced the incubation model in 2005. In 2019, our makers generated £5.9 million total annual sales, with turnover up 7.7% and profit up 12%

Touchwood Crafts was created by designer and maker Charles Ash. Known for his unique, stylish furniture pieces, Charles selects only the most elegant lines from the trees he collects to bring a flow to his work which can only be found in nature. This symbiotic relationship he has with nature and the rolling Oxfordshire landscape in which he works is an ever present inspiration.

Contemporary carved from tradition

Goosey Glass was founded by Alison Curtis in 2014 in the quaint village of Goosey, Oxfordshire. Alison is a predominantly self-taught glass artist and has a passion for the craft. She has loved working with glass as a medium from the very start!

STEAM BENDING

HOW TO CURVE WOOD?

Steam bending is a woodworking technique where wood is exposed to steam to make it pliable. Heat and moisture from steam can soften wood fibres enough so they can be bent and stretched, and when cooled down they will hold their new shape.

Fences not only provides privacy but the gap in between also provide some exposure to the users. Fences are widely used in between houses as people can have a different space differentiated from their neighbour but also be able to see each other and the street.

Curvy wall helps to seperate and create SEMI PRIVATE space for people to read and rest in resting area without exposed to everyone who walks pass.

Timber battens are available in a range of length op tions to suit on-site needs

Random Length is the most common form of timber supply. It typically is a length spread from 1.2m – 3.6m with an av erage of 2.4m. It is generally the most cost-effective way of procuring timber.

LENGTH OPTIONS - RANDOM LENGTH

MOUNTING TRACK TYPES

All timbers recommended for exterior use are Durability Class 1 (AS 5604), ensuring peace of mind that the timber will remain durable for a minimum of 40 years.

WOHA STUDIO

The ever fabulous WOHA studio based in Singapore. This is a wonderful interior pro ject for the Genexis Theatre, Singapore. It’s wonderful what a bit of digital fabrication can do these days – the sensual curvaceous form appears like a skeletal frame, the stark geometry balanced by the honey coloured plywood timber. Note the interior of the theatre in the third photo – the skin of the room is lined with timber balls for acoustic muffling.

Length options available are 600mm and 1200mm.

- SLIDING CLIP TECHNICAL AND CONSTRUCTION 19

Battens can be cut to any width on site up to 1200mm. Beyond 1200mm, consult Sculptform directly.

EXTERNAL CORNERS AND IN-FILLS around require the use of a specifically designed corner clip which simply clicks into a mitred mounting track corner.

PIVOT HATCH

As building tolerances vary greatly, and often at the time of ordering, there is no confirmed site measure ments, the sliding clip allows for “fudging” the spacing to maintain a symmetrical, consistent appearance at the peripheries of the layout.

Clearanceconsider:

CLIP TYPES

Using loose clips on either side of the layout, the appearance can give the illusion of being equally spaced.

Notice how more “symmet rical” it appears, with the last three battens on each side, fudges slightly to give the illu sion of equal spacing.

INTEGRATED LIGHT

RELATION

INLAID LIGHTS

OF TIMBER CLADDING AND LIGHTS TECHNICAL AND CONSTRUCTION 20

The flexibility of the Click-on battens system al lows lighting to be integrated quickly and easily.

The most common light to be integrated into our Click-on Batten system, linear lights offer a variety of ways to provide lighting solutions. Options to install linear lights include placing the light in the space between the batten, or remov ing part of a batten to incorporate the light in its place.

LINEAR LIGHTS

One of the most effective ways to use lighting into our Click-on Batten system is by integrating the lighting into the battens themselves. By routing out a groove in the face of the batten to insert the lighting fixture into, our inlaid lighting method allows for the lights to be seam lessly integrated within the system.
