This past November was filled with many fun events, from the social to many amazing festivals! Also, as of right now there aren't many upcoming events for December, but check back on the FB page often to stay updated. Additionally, finals are soon approaching, so make sure to stay on top of your grades guys! One last thing, remember to regularly check your hour log to make sure you are nearing the hour requirement for the semester!! Enjoy the read, and have a great month!

PRESIDENT'S NOTE a word from our co-presidents!

Happy December everyone, It is now the official holiday season you guys!! We hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving break, and also thanks to everyone who participated and contributed in the school wide Thanksgiving Food Drive! This year, we are implementing a new idea that we like to call “Key Club Families.” Freshman and Sophomores, this mainly applies to you! Each Freshman and Sophomore member should have received a family leader (KC Officer or Club Rep) at this past meeting. They are here to be your friends, encourage you to attend more events, and give you guidance in anything you need that relates to Key Club! Make sure to keep in contact with them as they will be there for you the entire year! Also, we have officially released our 2018-2019 Key Club Shirts. Make sure to purchase one and wear the stylish, cool, and extravagant shirts! As the cold now comes into Texas, we hope that everyone stays warm and safe. From all of the Officers and Sponsors, have a great holiday season!

Yours in Service, Arianna Garza & Patrick Tran

Meet the

Event Coordinator Edition:

Has Key Club and volunteering become an integral part of your everyday life? Yeah of course! Usually every weekend I try to volunteer and it just feels awkward without volunteering!

As one of the BOD's, do you think it's difficult to find interesting events to post? Ehhh I'd say it's kind of half and half? There's these periods where there's a bunch of events that conflict with each other and then there's periods where we have to salvage any event we can find.

What is the most annoying habit that other people have?

7

People who put milk before cereal and PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO KPOP.

Officer!

Steven Nguyen

If you were a dictator of a small island nation, what crazy dictator stuff would you do? I'd give criminals extremely weird punishments! For example, have them stare at the sun forever or force them to drink gallons of water, but surgically disabling them from peeing.

What part of your body would you replace with an improved mechanical version? I would do my arms! But if I were to be specific I'd say my left arm. ;).

What's your most impressive "go to" meal that you can cook? I burnt instant ramen... so yeah!

8

Meet the

Event Coordinator Edition:

Since you're constantly emailing coordinators about needing volunteers, how do you feel when they don't email back? I feel pretty normal about it, I don’t exactly think much about it. I’ll email them again if I need to but less work for me.

Do you think the BOD position is under appreciated, if so why? I think sometimes the BOD position is under appreciated because people like to assume it’s an easy job until they actually have to look for events each week and talk to people who think me or the other BOD's don’t do much.

Do you have a secret talent or skill that you don't get to use very much?

9

I can predict the future, that’s why my name is “That so Cindy”.

Officer! Cindy Vo

What superpower would you like to have for a day? I would like to be able to read minds, so I can see who the fake people are. And so I can hear all the tea that goes into people’s minds.

What is the most useful thing your mom or dad has taught you? Reusing plastic bags from stores for everything so I don’t have to buy any.

Name someone you'd like to spend a day with (alive/ dead)? I would like to spend a day with Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians aka Nick Young.

10

Meet the Event Coordinator Edition:

As BOD do you pick events that you would also like to volunteer at? Yes, I always try to find events that I would find enjoyable for everyone.

Do you think formerly being a club rep helped you smoothly transition into being an officer? Absolutely! It taught me how to find events early, so that way I didn’t have to just jump right into it without experience.

What would you rate 10/10? I would rate Whataburger's Honey Barbecue Chicken Strip sandwich a 10/10.

11

Officer!

Matthew Gabino

If all jobs had the same pay and hours, what job would you like to have? I would be a person who flips houses because I love rearranging and decorating rooms.

Name the top five things to take with you during a zombie attack. 1) laptop, 2) phone, 3) phone charger, 4) headphones, 5) my dog.

Would you rather have one life lasting 1000 years or live 10 lives at 100 years each? Explain. I would want to live 10 lives at 100 years each because I would improve myself with each new start. If I lived 1000 years I would have to make new friends every 40-60 years and that’s not fun.

12

Meet the Vice President Edition:

Overall, what is one of your favorite memories from your past years in Key? My favorite memories have been at the food bank, jamming to music, fooling around with friends, and packing things perfectly into cardboard boxes.

Have your duties increased as Vice President compared to being a BOD? As vice president I definitely have harder decisions to make than as a BOD, but definitely not as tiring as my workload as a BOD. I feel for the current BOD's.

What are a few of your favorite songs or songs you know by heart?Â

13

I know the alphabet.

Officer! Ivy Zheng

What would your perfect room look like? It would have gigantic windows for natural lighting, a bunch of fluffy blankets, a hammock, an egg chair, and a nice library.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time? I would spend time to explore my interests like taking up aerial silks, ballet, read, try to learn the piano, or another language.

What's your dream car? My dream car is a Tesla .

2018 ROCKETS RUN

NOVEMBER 10TH, 2018 " Even though the weather was freezing, I’m glad I went out to volunteer at the Rockets Run event to help pass out food for the runners! "

- DELENA VO, 12TH " The Rockets Run was a valuable and interesting experience! Despite the sudden cooler temperatures, the event was a success! To begin, our job as dedicated volunteers commenced with setting up tables, unboxing various snacks and drinks for the Runners’ after party, and placing everything on tables. As the event progressed, different runners, all varying in age, began walking to the tables and, as it was the duty of the other volunteers and I, we congratulated them with a smile and passed out snacks and drinks. Although the weather did not cooperate, the experience as a whole and the unity of key club brought upon warmth to all of us who volunteered that day. We had our laughs, gave back to our community and spent a cold day enjoying the magnificent view of Downtown. "

Black Horse Fun Day November 10th, 2018

T

he Black Horse Fun Day is a volunteering event, PUMPED full of fun! (Black Horse LLC specializes in making pumps for the oil and gas industries) At the event, volunteers get to help with inflatable activities, eat some barbecue, and they get a free hat!

I

-Â Matthieu Huynh, 10th

had a great time volunteering at Black Horse. It was a small event, close to home that allowed for me to get in a couple volunteer hours while doing my best to help out where I could. Since this was mainly a company festival, it was cute to see the children tagging along with their parents whilst enjoying the games and food. I would recommend this event to anyone who wants to have a easy and relaxing volunteer experience!

OWENS ELEMENTARY FALL FEST NOVEMBER 10TH, 2018

I was at the silly string station and I let the children pick a silly string color and I opened it for them, put the tickets in the box, then I explained to them how the game worked. It was very cold that day, but overall enjoyable to see the children have fun.

-VANESSA CASTILLO, 10TH

Cypress half marathon N O V 1 6 , 2 0 1 8

" Cypress Half Marathon was a super fun experience, even though I had to wake up really early and stand in the cold, I enjoyed making each runner’s day by cheering them on. The event is a normal any other marathon, but this specific event was the best! The runners were very excited to see all the volunteers cheering and passing water with a smile. I loved this event last year and this year even more. I would totally volunteer again next year! "

- CINDY VO, 10TH

Social AJOINT SOCIAL WITH KEY, HOPE & INTERACT!

" I attended the Key-Hope-Interact Annual Thanksgiving Social on November 16, and I had a fantastic time. I got to hang out with my friends, and I was able to catch up with some friends that I haven't spoken to in awhile. Since the social was hosted at a park, my friends and I got to hang out on the playground equipment. I personally love being outside, which made the event very enjoyable. The social made me realize that these clubs aren't just to keep you from being bored after school or to look better on a college application. These clubs really do bring people together. I hope I can attend another social soon, and I would definitely get a few of my other friends to come along. The Key-Hope-Interact Thanksgiving Social was a great way to start off my Thanksgiving break. "

- Jadyn Buono, 9th

" The Great Inflatable event never disappoints, it's been an amazing opportunity to volunteer for this event again this year! Nothing was more memorable than cheering families on as they race to the finish. "

THE GREAT INFLATABLE RUN November 17th, 2018

23

-ANGELA DANG, 10TH

" The Great Inflatable Race was an enthralling experience. As the volunteers and I were cheering and leading the participants on, excitement filled the air while the racers were competing to finish the race. Although some moments were dull, we finished off strong cheering on even the last participant. " -JANIE HINH, 9TH

NOVEMBER 18TH, 2018

Via Colori 2018 " Via Colori was an amazing event to volunteer at! You could see all of the hard work that the artists put into their vibrant murals as you walked around the block. Not only did this event showcase gorgeous pieces of art, but it also raised funds for children with hearing loss. I couldn’t have asked for a better event to be involved in, and will definitely be going back. "

- Pearl Vu, 11th " Volunteering at Via Colori was a remarkable experience. I got the chance to see magnificent artworks made on the street by participants. Afterwards, we headed back to our stations where we welcomed people to play games and collected data to help the healthcare organizations get a public view on medical conditions. I would highly recommend art fans to volunteer at Via Colori with their friends, as the event exposes oneself to great artists in Houston and exceptional art. I had a great time volunteering at Via Colori and cannot wait to volunteer there again to see other masterpieces. "

- Krishna Panchal, 10th

FRIENDS OF THE HOUSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY November 24th, 2018

25

“ This was my first event as a Key Club Representative and honestly I was nervous that it wouldn’t go well, but the event was a success! The coordinator, Bryan, was super nice and I really felt that we were helping out the community, because we sorted books that would later be sold or put in the Houston Public Library. There was even a lounge provided to us with snacks and drinks for when we needed to take a break! Once we were finished with our tasks, we still had half an hour left, so Bryan let us make crafts before it was time to go. I’ve even been told by many fellow volunteers that they had fun and liked this event, so I’m glad it went well! ”

- Elizabeth Finley, 11th

Major Emphasis - Children's Miracle Network's mission is to increase funds and awareness for Texas Children's Hospital and other children's hospitals. Additionally, through fundraising and donating CMN is able to provide the best care to kids and improve the lives of as many children as possible. - March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies, by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. This nonprofit guides and supports moms throughout their pregnancy journeys. Furthermore, March of Dimes pioneers research to find solutions to the biggest health threats to moms and babies to build a brighter future for everyone. - Through funding and donations, The Eliminate Project's mission is to get rid of maternal and neonatal tetanus. With vaccines, lives are saved and futures are protected. And the end of this disease means the beginning of better health for many families.

Due to the constant accessibility of indoor plumbing and clean drinking water at our convenience, many of us may forget that not everyone also has these luxuries.

In fact, the shocking reality is, 663 million people on our planet lack access to safe, clean drinking water!

That's why The Thirst Project works toward eliminating shortages of water by building a socially-conscious generation of young people. And by educating students about it and encouraging them to help the clean water cause, we can build real water projects all over the world.

Clean water means: LESS DISEASE, FURTHER EDUCATED STUDENTS, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, and overall a BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE.
