A SMALL UPDATE!

Letter from the Editor Hey guys, I hope everyone had a great February! It's kind of crazy how spring break is quickly approaching right? Anyway I hope everyone spends their spring break productively, whether to rest or hm possibly volunteer.. In reality, if you don't have anything to do, why not attend an event and invite a friend! Also I'm testing out formats for the newsletter, so if you like or dislike them, I'm open to any opinions! Thus, beware of change! We're already half way through the year, so let's keep going strong with volunteering and of course, school things! Have a good day!

Yours in Service, Jennifer FinleyÂ

President's Note Hey Key Clubbers, Hope everyone had a fantastic month of February! A lot of events and volunteering went on during the month and we are super excited for what’s coming in these next few months before we end the year! It is that time of the year now where we started having officer interviews for the 2019-2020 school year! All interviews were held and they were all a huge success. Make sure to come to our March 6th meeting in the Downstairs LGI to find out the 20192020 Key Club Officers! We have planned our annual Key Club car wash and we could use your help! The car wash will take place from 11am-3pm at the Wendy’s off of West Road and Beltway 8 on March 23, 2019. This is a huge fundraiser for the club and we want you to participate. We will be making signs after our general meeting on March 20th so make sure to be there! District Convention (DCON) is quickly approaching in April. Our officer board is hard at work planning for this trip to Dallas and is working 24/7 on all of the things for the contests, we hope to bring home many trophies as we have done in the past! That’s all for this newsletter, check in next month to hear our new officer board!

Yours in Service, Arianna Garza & Patrick Tran

Serve Team: SERVING BREAKFAST TO THE HOMELESS

FEBRUARY9TH

ARIANNA GARZA, 12TH

" Serve Team is my favorite volunteer event because it’s so amazing to meet all the wonderful people that are there, and it reminds me to be grateful for everything I have."

MATTHIEU HUYNH, 10TH

“Helping out at the Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen made me see the difference volunteer groups make and how we improve our community. Our service was humble yet still rich in kindness.”

VALENTINE'S DAY HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL February 9th " Considering the frosty rain and the extremely chilly weather, two layers (of clothing) and a fluffy blanket could not do the trick. Despite the severe chills, the event itself was pretty much a success and thoroughly riveting. Â I was in charge of the morning shift and my task was to serve the visitors beverages and food that consisted of tacos, hamburgers, coffee and hot chocolate. Overall, the time I spent there was a significantly great experience from the complaint of the steaks whereabouts to the refreshing cup of hot chocolate. "

THE YEAR OF THE PIG

“ It was exciting to help out at this event especially because I got the chance to learn and be surrounded by the Chinese culture!

Matthew Gabino, 11th Matthew Gabino, 11th " The Lunar New Years festival was fun like always! I got to meet so many people who shared the same cultural background as mine and also celebrated the new year with them! It was such a great opportunity to volunteer and create new memories with fellow members. Cheers to the Year of the Pig! "

BUFFALO BAYOU CLEAN UP

FEBR UARY 16TH

13

" Lending a hand to Buffalo Bayou Partnership as we help restore their parks and trails! "

ELIZABETH FINLEY, 11TH

" Although some of our drivers didn’t show up and I had to pull some strings, everyone safely arrived at the event location. It was our first time working with the Buffalo Bayou organization and even though it was a rainy day, we still worked hard! Our job that day was to pull out weeds and dead leaves from the garden beds. The staff was very accommodating and provided gloves, trash bags, and even refreshments; our Interact Club was also there! The weather may have been cloudy, it rained a little too, but I enjoyed this event. We even finished our shift early and were done for the day! Overall, the event was pretty refreshing because we were able to get close with our environment and help out Mother Earth at the same time! "

Da Vinci Day 2019 February 23rd

15

“ Da Vinci Day was an interesting event that allowed Horizons kids from many schools to come and enjoy a few hours of fun filled science activities! Although my part as a volunteer wasn’t very vital to the kids’ learning about coding, I still found it enjoyable to help pass things out or walk around and converse with the kids. All in all, I had fun listening to the creative stories kids made up for their sprites while coding, and I also received a bag of animal crackers and a water bottle, so what more could you ask for? ”

Jennifer Finley, 10th

" Da Vinci Day was a fun new experience for me, I got to work with kids from grades 1-8 and met new volunteers from other schools. This event gave me flashbacks to when I was younger! And watching these students engaging in team building activities was also very exciting. I would love to volunteer with these students again next year! "

Cindy Vo, 10th

Due to the constant accessibility of indoor plumbing and clean drinking water at our convenience, many of us may forget that not everyone also has these luxuries.

In fact, the shocking reality is, 663 million people on our planet lack access to safe, clean drinking water!

That's why The Thirst Project works toward eliminating shortages of water by building a socially-conscious generation of young people. And by educating students about it and encouraging them to help the clean water cause, we can build real water projects all over the world.

Clean water means: LESS DISEASE, FURTHER EDUCATED STUDENTS, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, and overall a BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE.
