A SMALL UPDATE!

Letter from the Editor Hey guys, I hope everyone is having a good break! As the editor, I can tell that this past year has been a great one for our club and helping the community!! The monthly recaps, has really allowed me to see, and emphasizes the efforts of our club and members. Anyways, in this newsletter are the final editions of "Meet the Officer", which consists of our presidents and secretaries. So, take a look to learn more about them!! Not going to lie, being editor has really challenged my creativity, and pushed me to create interesting layouts and compositions that are not only appealing, but easy to understand. Overall, I'm glad to have this experience, and here's to new layouts and more volunteering in the upcoming year!! Have a good rest of the break!

Yours in Service, Jennifer FinleyÂ

Meet the President Edition:

What message do you want to leave for future Key officers, or even presidents? I want them to know that: even though you are one of the officers that run the club, you can still interact with the members and go out and have fun while volunteering. Being an officer will change your life forever because of the amount of new people that are met everyday through Key Club.

What drew you to Key Club, instead of, for example, Hope or Interact? From the first day I visited JV while I was in middle school, I read some posters that said “Join Key Club, we don’t make keys but we unlock doors.” At that point, I knew instantly that I wanted to join this club. I also knew that it was about volunteering, which I found as a passion for myself. Joining Key Club was one of the best decisions I made freshman year.

If you had to change your name, what would you change it to?

7

Matthew. People say that I look like a Matthew, haha.

Officer!

Patrick Tran

What are some of your favorite foods and why? I LOVE sushi because you could never get tired of it. There are just too many different ways that sushi could be presented to a person. Pho is also pretty good because you could eat it literally any day and in the cold it is soooo good. Walnut shrimp with rice is pretty good too.

Who inspires you (in any aspect) ? I would have to say my parents inspire me the most, along with some of my friends.

What irrational fear do you have? HEIGHTS. I have a major fear of heights. I would rather eat cauliflower or brussel sprouts than be put on top of a building over an edge. .

8

Meet the President Edition:

Do you think you would be the person you are today without Key Club? I do not think I would be the person I am today without Key Club. Key Club has allowed me to find my love for volunteering and has taught me so much about interacting with others.

What is one Key memory that really sticks out among the others? One of my favorite memories is volunteering at Dance Marathon my sophomore year. That year we had miracle families come to Dance Marathon to speak to us about their stories, and I remember feeling so happy that we were able to help these amazing people.

What fictional place would you most like to go to?

9

One fictional place I would love to go to is “The Land of the Dead from the movie Coco.

Officer!

Arianna Garza

What shows are you into/ which do you recommend? I really really love Black Mirror, Bojack Horseman, and Game of Thrones.

Are you scared for the future, or are you excited for what it possibly has to offer? I am terrified of the future, but I am also super excited for college and all the new experiences.

What one thing do you really want but can't afford? I really want to go to Costa Rica to visit a sloth sanctuary, and I promised myself I would one day but not at the moment. .

10

Meet the Secretary Edition:

Do you truly enjoy volunteering? Yes, I do enjoy volunteering because I know I am helping people in need whether it be directly or indirectly. I am making a change in someone's life that will certainly impact them in a positive aspect.

If you didn't take time to volunteer, what do you think you would be doing instead? I'd probably be loafing around the house or playing some epic games.

What do you think happens to you after you die? I believe that our soul is released from ones body and enters a new body to learn something new about life.

11

Officer!

Ian Hernandez

What piece of tech do you hope is invented in your lifetime? I hope that they invent an alarm clock that wakes me up by doing annoying things so I can actually wake up for once.

What will finally break the internet? I will personally drop nukes on all internet service providers if I ever feel like it.

What would be in the gag reel of your life? https://youtu.be/ulT9Jxf UGig .

12

Meet the Secretary Edition:

When did you first join Key, and what were your initial thoughts towards the club? I first joined Key Club my freshman year because I thought it would be a cool way to flex on my college applications. After my very first event, I realized that Key Club was also a club in which I could develop amazing friendships and connections that I would cherish throughout high school.

What's it like being Victor Xia? It’s pretty great other than the fact that I’m only 3’3” :-(

How do you balance school and other extracurricular activities without going insane? You have to be insane.

13

Officer!

Victor Xia

What were some of the turning points in your life so far? When I was 3 I fell down an escalator. I no longer like peach jam.

What technology from science fiction do you wish existed? A time machine so I can convince myself to ditch the bowl cut earlier.

What are some of your favorite songs, or musicians? Steven Nguyen’s playlist. .

14

Meet the Secretary Edition:

Do you think you'll continue volunteering even after Key Club? I will definitely continue to serve my community long after I leave high school and Key Club.

What are some things that you think Key Club could improve on? Some things Key Club could improve on is connecting more with all the members and making the club more of a family environment rather than just an extra curricular activity.

What do you hate and love about your phone? I hate that I’m so attached to my phone, but I love being able to talk to my friends and play music anytime I want.

15

Officer!

Jessica Sweeten

What movie/ book character are you most similar to? Explain. I am most like Boo from Monsters Inc. because I have a habit of accidentally getting myself into things and we look the same when we’re mad.

What are some things you hope to accomplish in the upcoming years (big/ small)? Some things I hope to accomplish are becoming less anxious, accepting the things I can’t change, and graduating and going to college!!

What do you want to be remembered for? I want to be remembered for always going the extra mile for the people that I care for. .

RUN HOUSTON! SUGAR LAND DEC 1ST. 2018 "Although this event was very early in the morning, the pleasant weather and good energy made it worth while. My position was at the finish line, and I must say it was pretty rewarding. To see every runner one by one cross the finish somehow filled me with a sense of accomplishment as well, like that proud mom feeling. Overall, Run Houston was a pretty pleasant event, and I even coincidentally reconnected with a few old friends while there! If you want a simple, easy volunteer experience, I recommend Run Houston!"

Houston Food Bank

December 19th, 2018

Volunteering at the food bank always feels so rewarding! My group and I were 'box makers'. Basically, our job was to fold and tape as many boxes as we could during our shift. Believe it or not, our job was very enjoyable, and I’m pretty sure we qualify to work at UPS now. Having fun with friends while accomplishing tasks that help the community is such a treat. 10/10 would recommend volunteering at the Houston Food Bank.

Due to the constant accessibility of indoor plumbing and clean drinking water at our convenience, many of us may forget that not everyone also has these luxuries.

In fact, the shocking reality is, 663 million people on our planet lack access to safe, clean drinking water!

That's why The Thirst Project works toward eliminating shortages of water by building a socially-conscious generation of young people. And by educating students about it and encouraging them to help the clean water cause, we can build real water projects all over the world.

Clean water means: LESS DISEASE, FURTHER EDUCATED STUDENTS, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, and overall a BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE.
