Agawam Hunt May 2016

From the Desk of the General Manager Jennifer Croce Dear Agawam Members, Greetings. April was a great month at Agawam. We kicked the season off with the ABCD Scramble and had more players this year than in the past. I’d like to send a special thanks to Norm, Josh and the pro shop team for marketing this event so effectively. The Spring Showcase was our next big event in April. Thank you to all members who attended and a special thanks to those members who were able to bring prospective members with them. We had a great turn-out and had our first family join the day after the showcase! Please join us in welcoming Kelly and Heather Fowler and their five year old daughter, Ansley. Thank you very much to their sponsoring member, Hillary Fagan and their secondary sponsors, the Burokers. After showing off our Club, our Golf Course Superintendent, Drew Cummins and his team jumped in to prepare the course for season. The team started at 4:30am and ended at 6:00pm. After 15 staff members put in 170 man hours of work, all 20 greens were aerated, cleaned off, seeded, fertilized and top-dressed with sand. Sand was swept in to fill holes, greens were rolled and we were open for play. Later in this edition, you’ll find links to videos where you can see the team in action! Drew, special thanks to you and your team for not only taking care of the course but also for being flexible and waiting until after our annual Spring Showcase! Finally, we ended the month by recognizing our administrative staff on Administration Day. Ellen and Inez had deliveries coming to the main office all day starting with a box of baked goods, then came a giant basket of Godiva chocolate followed by a beautiful spring pitcher filled with a flower arrangement. Ladies, thank you so much for all of the administrative support you provide the team on a daily basis! Coming up in May, we have some great social activities on the calendar. We started the month off with a very successful Prime Rib and Popover Night. Members and their guests attended the event, and the return of the popover was a big hit! Coming up this week, we will be celebrating Cinco De Mayo on Thursday . Looking to the weekend, we will be celebrating Kentucky Derby Day. Please join us for the two most exciting minutes of sports. The race will be cheered, mint juleps will be sipped, derby fare will be served and showy hats will be judged! The following day, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day with a grand buffet that is sure to delight Mom! We will feature several Throwback Thursday nights including Sushi and Sake, Tapas and Tap Beer and Seafood and Specialty Cocktails. Rounding out the dining options are our Sunday Family Meals which consist of Italian Night, Piping Hot Pot Pies and Joe’s Famous Chicken. Please bring the family out to dine and to meet other families who belong to Agawam. We will wrap up the month of May with a Memorial Day Cookout that is sure to delight. Please RSVP today to join us for these social and dining experiences at the clubhouse. Finally, it’s hard to believe with the chill in the air, but the pool and snack bar will officially open for season on May 27th. Look for increased service and healthier options at the snack bar this year. The pool is full and the water is heating, so we’ll be ready for your family and friends to enjoy the beautiful, refreshing pools at Agawam! As always, we look forward to seeing you at your Club. Cheers, Jen.

New Traditions Are Being Made Just a quick thank you for making things run so smoothly last night:) All of us had a great time (we have 13 kids between us so nice to have a night without them!) and also love the club for our kids! We are excited about a great summer ahead! Making 'girls' night' a monthly thing going forward! Please also thank Joe and all of the staff :) everyone was happy to meet 'our new GM' and Joe and to see some new faces in the dining room too! Agawam Member

We Are Being Liked & Shared On Social Media My wife and I had a lovely dinner in a warm and cozy environment. The food and service was excellent. Love the golf course as well! Facebook Posting by Agawam Guest

Our Service Is Being Recognized The membership enjoyed a wonderful luncheon to accompany our business meeting. We extend our compliments to the entire staff that made sure all amenities, service and dining were exceptional. President, RIGCSA

We Are Creating Memories For Brides and Grooms Gray has been very pleasant to work with from meeting with us when we booked the venue to meeting with us at the tasting. Agawam Bride

We Are Exceeding Member Expectations …...My friends and I were playing golf when a golf cart pulled up behind us and not liking an audience we asked if he would like to go ahead before we hit. Before he pulled ahead we started to talk and I realized this must be “Joe”. We were only kidding when one of the ladies said “oh, I thought you were bringing us hot coffee”. We all laughed but lo and behold when we were on the next hole he delivered pot of coffee, milk, cups, stirrers, and covers ( I guess he forgot the danish)! Please tell him we do not expect this kind of service but the fact that he did that will long be remembered. You both bring such a wealth of knowledge and experience and overall good spirit to the club and I for one am most thankful…..we should have hats made that say “Let’s Make Agawam Great Again”. Norm’s News This weekend turns May 1st and with that comes the start of the heart of our member golf activities and tournaments. Golf programs for the men, women, and junior members begin just in time for the weather to break and the grounds to take on their colors in full bloom.

JUNIOR GOLF

Our spring junior golf program begins this Sunday with the first of four Sunday afternoon clinics. Juniors 10 and over begin at 3:30pm for 45 minutes followed by the younger juniors, ages 5-9, at 4:30pm. The forecast for Sunday is not cooperating but we will make a decision first thing Sunday morning whether to cancel or try. If you would like to sign-up your son or daughter, please email Josh or call the golf shop.

The PGA Junior League is a great opportunity for junior golfers to participate in a fun team environment. The tentative schedule has been set for the matches. We are still taking registrations if any junior is still interested in joining the team. If you have any questions please call the golf shop or email Josh.

WOMEN'S GOLF

The Agawam ―Ladies of the Links‖ kick-off their 2016 season on Thursday May 12 with their annual cocktail party at 5pm in the Golf Lounge. This is a meet and greet with a short discussion about the 2016 season and the events that they will be looking forward to. The ladies will start their Thursday morning golf the following Thursday, May 19, with the Opening ―Play with the Pro’s Scramble.‖ This is a 9am start that runs about nine holes and concludes with an optional lunch around noon. Email, call or sign-up outside the golf shop.

MEN’S GOLF

Two major men’s events have already started. Individual qualifying started in April and continues into May for the Atwood Bowl and President’s Cup tournaments. The Atwood Bowl is a two man team match play event with your net qualifying score to determine your playing partner. The first round of matches must be played on Saturday, May 21 at the posted morning starting time. The remaining matches are played in monthly intervals and arranged by the teams remaining. Qualifying rounds must be announced before teeing off and you must be accompanied by at least one other member. All play is from the black tees. The defending champions are Mike Costello and Walter Hunter. They are exempt and will be the second seed team. Atwood Bowl qualifying ends on Thursday, May 19 at 6pm.

Norm’s News The other men’s spring major tournament is the President’s Cup individual match play championship. This is a 16 player match play event with and individual net qualifying score to determine the field and the matches. Matches must be completed in a monthly interval and are arranged by the players. Qualifying runs through May 31 and the lowest 15 and the defending Champion, John Parziale will be seeded into match play. The qualifying format is the same as the Atwood Bowl and players may declare the same round to qualify for both tournaments at the same time. Once the intention to qualify has been made, it cannot be withdrawn and the score will be posted. MIXED GOLF

Our mixed golf opens in May with our first of two major mixed championships. The D.E. Jackson Memorial Day Mixed is an alternate shot format with a long standing tradition at Agawam. Tee off is at 8:30am on Monday, May 30. The sign-up for this event is now posted outside the golf shop so please email, call, or sign-up in person if you would like to join us on Memorial Day.

DINGER ANNUAL MEN’S MEMBER-GUEST

Agawam’s premier men’s golf event, the Dinger Invitational Three day Member-Guest, is just two months away. This year we have moved to a Friday, Saturday and Sunday format to run June 24, 25 & 26. Friday is an afternoon start with 18 holes, Saturday is 36 holes, with things wrapping up Sunday after 18 holes and the championship playoff. The entry fee is $795 and includes all tournament amenities except mixed drinks in the clubhouse. Each player receives a favor valued at $150 each. Daily cash prizes are also included in the entry fee as well as golf carts and one practice round. The field is limited to the first 40 teams and 9 teams are already pre-registered. Formal invitations will be emailed shortly. I will continue to take pre-registration entries by phone, email, or in person for those who know they are playing and want to reserve a spot before.

OUTSIDE GOLF EVENTS

May’s member events also signal the start of our outside event activity. Outside events are typically on Monday or Tuesday with the exception of a few Friday morning events. This coming Friday May 6 is one of those few exceptions. This is a 48 player field that tees off in the morning and will be clear of the first tee by noon. This will allow for the normal Friday afternoon member play to be uninterrupted. I will make a point to highlight a week in advance the outside play activity and the impact to member availability. Many of these events are also in your printed golf calendar. Late additions or rescheduled outside events will be emphasized in these weekly communications. I’m looking forward to an exciting 2016 season. Have a great weekend! Norm
