News From the General Manager’s Desk Jennifer Croce Dear Agawam members, It certainly does seem that summer has finally arrived at Agawam. It’s time to dust off the clubs, pull out the racquets and dig out your swimsuits! The racquet and golf programs have kicked-off for the season, junior camps are starting up in just a few weeks and the pool is a balmy 75 degrees! This Saturday, June 5th, we will officially start the summer for the Agawam juniors with a bouncy house, face painting, lawn games, tasty treats and author, Christine Chitnis who will be signing / selling her book while providing complimentary samples of some of the delicious recipes contained within. In the event of rain, we will move the festivities to June 12th. Please watch your email or call the clubhouse the morning of Sunday, June 5th if the weather is questionable. The month of May included some fun social and sports activities. On the social side, Cinco De Mayo drew a big crowd at Agawam. The food was tasty and the Agawam Wyatt-Rita was being sipped throughout the clubhouse! The Mother’s Day brunch was well attended, the food was outstanding, the service exceptional and the laughter of Moms and their families was heart-warming. Our Sunday family meals went very well, and we continue to receive feedback from Agawam parents who are letting us know how we can exceed the needs of their families. Please keep the comments coming so we may continue to raise the bar for Agawam families. Thursday Throwbacks were a big hit with bar stools being the only seating options on several of the Thursday evenings in May! Agawam members delighted in the different flavors that were served during each Throwback theme night. Thank you to all who joined us for this Thursday evening culinary tour. Finally, even with the poor weather over Memorial Day weekend, our members enjoyed the course, the courts, the pool and the clubhouse in between raindrops! Moving from social to sports, your pros will fill you in later in the sports section of this newsletter. The social side of June will bring more Sunday family meals. We will continue our culinary tour with the Agawam ‘Taste of’ series which will feature the tastes of Spain, Germany and summer this month. As mentioned earlier, we will have our Summer Celebration for the children on June 5th with a rain-date of June 12th. On the 19th, we will have our annual Father’s Day cookout. Please bring Dad out to the club to celebrate in style! Finally, as you all know, the dinger occurs in June. The Swing into Summer Celebration and Dinger Award Ceremony will occur on Saturday, June 25th (please note that the calendar that came in your monthly statement shows the dinner and celebration on Sunday the 26th, but it is actually on Saturday the 25th.) All members are encouraged to attend the Celebration whether or not they are playing in the dinger. More information on the dinger weekend including the weekend calendar, trunk show, dinner and celebration will come in a separate document that will be sent later this month. Being that this is one of our biggest events of the season, we want to give it special attention outside of the newsletter. Please do join in the festivities on June 25th — it is a party that is not to be missed! The next few pages will highlight the very positive comments that were received throughout the month of May. Please note that not all comments we receive are positive, and we do address negative comments immediately. That being said, we have listened to the Agawam vegetarians and have incorporated vegetarian options into our a la carte menus, specialty nights and Sunday family meals. We have heard Agawam parents ask for healthier options at the snack bar, and they are now on the menu. We’ve listened to the Agawam children who have asked for desserts to be included on all Sunday night buffets going forward. We’ve even included our first junior comment card later in the newsletter — the Agawam juniors have spoken! Finally, on the golf lounge side, we have a new smoking policy. We ask that smokers utilize the green Adirondack chairs and avoid the dining table area while smoking. We thank you in advance for your cooperation. Cheers, Jen.

Tennis at Agawam was booming with the Indoor Club Championship
It was the highest participation that we have had in the last three years for this event with 40 registrations! Some new face have emerged during this tournament and combined with some of our existing Agawam tennis players, it made this event and really fun one to watch.
We have already two champions out of five events for this year's event.
In the Mixed Doubles event, newer members Molly and Patrick Franke posted back-to-back upsets against last year's grass championship finalist team first to eventually prevail against the defending grass champion team, Lisa Mackey and Paul Musarra, in a tight match. Final score 7/5, 5/7 and 10/5.
In the Gentlemen Doubles event, it was a family affair with Tom and Sam Kellogg finishing on top after defeating in a nail biting three set match Paul Musarra and Tim Schmutzler by 7/5, 5/7 and 10/7. Tough two losses for Paul but he still have one more shot at the championship at the Gentlemen Singles final.
May was a busy month here at the Agawam Tennis courts. All of our outdoor courts are now open for your enjoyment. You can choose from clay or grass courts or just play on both! Our tennis court technician, Jeff Sprague, has again pull off an amazing feat and both clay and well as grass courts are playing incredibly...and way before Memorial Day! May, has also hosted our Indoor Club Championship. We also had our first Parent/Child on the har-tru courts. Six (6) families spend a full morning a fun social but yet competitive tennis. At the end Patrick Franke and his son Nolan took the title with Jen Coia and her son AJ came in close second. Plenty of tennis events coming up so stay tuned!

Golf News from Norm MEMBER GOLF ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR JUNE MONTHLY BEST BALL OF FOURSOME TOURNAMENT (FORMERLY OUR MONTHLY MEMBER-GUEST TOURNAMENTS) Our first monthly Best Ball of Foursome tournament is scheduled for Friday, June 17th. These are a 1pm shotgun with a lunch buffet in the main clubhouse starting at 11:45am. Teams can be any combination of members or guests with male, female and junior golfers all welcome to be part of your team. Contact the golf shop for more details or to be signed up. WOMENS GOLF Wednesday continues our Spring Ladies Clinics. Please note there must be a minimum of six (6) ladies enrolled to run the clinic. The June clinic topics will be announced each Friday through the golf shop weekly update. Our Ladies Guest Day scheduled for Friday, June 10, 2016. We have already signed up 14 teams so we are in record setting territory at 56 players. This is the perfect day to reciprocate an invitation you have had to another club. I look forward to what will be a spectacular event. Email or call the golf shop if you would like to sign a team up. JUNIOR GOLF Our Sunday Junior Clinics resume tomorrow, May 15 at 3:30 and 4:30pm. This weekly program does not require regular attendance so members can enter their junior golfer for any of the weeks convenient for their family. MENS GOLF You should have received an email with the formal invitation for this year’s Dinger Invitational Men’s Member-Guest. We are just about one month out and it will begin to fill-up fast as members realize we are flying into Memorial Day weekend next week and the summer is upon us. The Men’s Stroke Play & WASP Cup two day stroke play tournament is just a few weeks away. The dates are Saturday and Sunday, June 11th & 12th. There will be staring times both days from 7:20am-8:40am with the 2nd day pairings divided by the best gross and net scores from the first day. The low two day total without strokes will be crowned the Stroke Play champion and the lowest two-day net total will be the WASP Cup winner.
LADIES’ GOLF
The Ladies Opening Day ”Play with the Pros” Scramble saw a record turnout of 25 players. The field was split into teams of four and the Pros camped out on holes 1-4 while the groups scrambled on their own for holes 5, 17 & 18. The low score came from the team captained by Chris Rooks, with Diane Gooding, Carol Peterson, Carolyn Kressley and Sarah Whinery. They edged the field with a very good score of 27. The other five teams all came in just one or two shots back. The closest to the pin prize went to Debbie Leach with her approach to about 10 feet on the 5th hole. MENS GOLF The Men’s Atwood Bowl Member-Member first round was contested on 5/21. We had some great pairings with the defending champions, Mike Costello and Walter Hunter looking to defend their title against Agawam Club President Ed Thomsen and fellow board member, Drew Carlin. They did not fare well as they went down 4&3 to the ThomsenCarlin team. The #1 seed team of Wally Gernt and Rich Cavanagh advanced with a 5&3 win. Dick Glenn captained Bob Griffith to a 2 up win in their match. Paul Kappel took advantage of his handicap strokes and helped his partner Win Major to a 4&3 win. The match of the day went extra holes and saw Peter Brown Jr and Kevin Sullivan to eliminate Isiah Osofisan and Ed Massoud advance. Below is a summary of all of the matches and the results. The winning teams move on to the Quarter-finals to be played by June 30th.

Agawam's Caroline Farber captures the Rhode Island Girls High School Championship by four strokes with a spectacular 73 at Newport Country Club Tuesday. Congratulations to Caroline for a well-deserved state high school individual title yesterday at Newport CC. Caroline out dueled Katie Um from Portsmouth to post a four shot win over Katie who shot 77. No other player in the field broke 80.
Caroline has played an important role on her Moses Brown team since her freshman year. Last year she helped Moses Brown to their first state championship. Next week she will be playing with her team at Cranston CC as they try to defend their title over the two day finale to the 2016 high school golf season. Today’s journal has a great feature on Caroline and an in-depth recount of her round.
While Caroline was representing Agawam at Newport, we had some spectacular and rare golf achievements happening here at the club. Drew Carlin holed his second shot on the 4th hole to record his second career "Albatross" i.e. double-eagle with a perfectly struck 3-iron that landed on the green and rolled smoothly into the cup. This is the second time Drew has made a "2" on the 4th. He did so just a few years ago. I can't recall who was in his group then, but yesterday's two was made playing against his brother Gray who is part of the Agawam clubhouse staff. I'm not sure if they were playing a match but it's a fair bet that Gray lost the 4th hole.

Wally Gernt and Peter Brown Sr. claimed a tie for tenth in the RIGA Senior Fourball Net at Crestwood CC with rounds of 68-61=139 total. Ed Thomsen and Tom Acciardo finished 19th with their 68-65=133 total. Tom was coming off a win in the Senior Fourball Gross just a week earlier with his partner Dr. George Pirie. Amy Fuller and Leslie Gernt competed at Kirkbrae CC in the RIGA Women’s Series. They combined for a score of 79 and a tie for 23rd finish. Agawam hosts the Salute Military Golf Association for two days in May. Twenty-four vets joined us on Sunday, May 22nd for a practice round in preparation for their Monday event with their sponsors. They were very appreciative of the member support they received during their two days at the club. Peter Brown and Marisa White showed the Agawam hospitality and appreciation by buying them their first round of drinks in the golf lounge on Sunday night. On Monday morning they returned with some very generous sponsors to enjoy a spectacular day of golf. The Agawam pins were decorated with flags from every branch of service including the US flag on the pin for the 18th hole. Josh and I will continue see these six of the vets in a series of clinics starting in a few weeks. It is rewarding for us to join the club in support of such a deserving association and its members.
RESULTS FROM MEMBER GOLF ACTIVITIES GREAT SHOTS & GREAT HOLES Last Tuesday, Drew Carlin made his second career Albatross (Double-Eagle) on the 4 Hole. After a long drive, Drew struck a perfect 3-iron that landed on the green and rolled gently into the hole. Drew also made a two there just a few years ago. Ironically if he does this just one week later it would be an eagle as the 4th is being downsized to a Par 4. th
On Thursday, Al Hall made his first career Hole-In-One on the 5th hole. Al hit a seven iron from 145 yards onto the green. As he approached the green he didn’t see his ball on the putting surface. With no ball to be found just off the green’s edge, he decided to check in the hole where his ball was comfortably at rest. Patience pays off as Al waited 70 years for his first ACE! With the way his game is improving, I bet a second isn’t far around the corner. With the opening of the new holes I am pleased to report some of the first birdies. Tom Clayton made a birdie three on the 4th which has been newly assigned a Par of 4. Out early in the day, Liz Chace was the first women player to hit from the new tees on #6 and #15. After hitting solid shots down both holes she commented that she like the new 15th design much better than the old design. Playing later in the afternoon Dottie Hunter made the first women’s birdie on the 15th. That helped Dottie post her best Agawam round ever with 85 Zach Mandell celebrated his 30th birthday Saturday with a small 20 player group of members and close friends. The group enjoyed the scramble format and closest to the pin challenges.
