July 2016

It simply doesn’t get any better.

The Agawam Experience. It simply doesn’t get any better.

Greetings Agawam members, Welcome to a fabulous season at Agawam. The month of June was very busy with social events, junior camp, junior golf league, the dinger, member-guests and private events! After being shut down then rained out, we were finally able to celebrate the opening of the pool on June 12th with our Summer Celebration. The following weekend, we celebrated Father’s Day with Agawam’s annual Father’s Day Cookout. We continued our “Taste of” series by taking a culinary tour of Spain, Summer in Italy and Summer in the USA. The men’s and ladies’ golf and tennis events kept us busy all month with multiple activities including several memberguests. And, of course, we finished the month by celebrating the dinger and Swinging into Summer! Looking forward to July, we have a lot of activities on the calendar for you, your family and friends to enjoy. We’ve had a request from the Agawam families to have some Thursday night activities. Thursday in July will consist of “Sunset 7” golfing for juniors and adults, Bingo and Dinner for juniors and adults, Jr. pool party combined with adult dinner at the clubhouse and finally a Junior “Chopped” competition with a buffet featuring their creations later in the day. Please do come out and show the Agawam juniors support by participating in the audience or being a culinary judge! For Agawam adults, we are featuring two date nights. We’ll have activities at the pool for the children including pool games and a scavenger hunt while the adults will be enjoying a leisurely meal at the clubhouse complete with board games! Based on feedback, we will continue our Sunday Family Meals with A Taste of the Mediterranean, Super Slider Sunday, a Backyard Chicken Barbeque and Casual Seafood Sunday. On the last Saturday of the month, we will feature Agawam’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Masquerade Party so be sure to save the date and join in on the fun! Finally, we’ll finish the month off with an etiquette class for juniors age 6-16 which will be presented by our very own Front of House Manager, Gray Carlin. In this edition of the newsletter, you will see three pages of positive comments from the very busy month of June. The joy these letters bring to the staff is overwhelming as it lets them know they are pleasing their members. I’d like to personally thank each and every staff member who works hard every day to make comments like these possible. Although the letters are written to me, they are a reflection of your hard work. You are all doing a phenomenal job, and it is clear that your hard work is not going unnoticed. On a final note, I’d like to extend a thank you to the entire board of governors for the hard work and perseverance they have exhibited in working with local banks to provide funding for Agawam. Ed Thomsen, David Duffell and Lawrence Wagner have led the charge and have done a fantastic job for your Club! On that note, I’d also like to personally thank the board members for living up to everything they promised during my interview. They have done a fantastic job of letting me run the Club which isn’t always easy for a board who has been forced to run it themselves. Without their full commitment to me and my management style, we would not have been able to make such strides in such a short period of time. You are a board of governors who should be very proud of knowing how to step out of day to day operations and instead focus on the longevity of the Club. I sincerely thank each and every one of you. Cheers, Jen.

Dear Agawam members, Please join me in thanking the community of physicians listed here for donating to Agawam Hunt. This fine group of local physicians have donated monies to Agawam for staff training in First Aid and CPR. In addition, this group has provided funds for purchasing a defibrillator for property to ensure the safety of our members, their guests and our staff. On behalf of the staff and myself, thank you very much for caring so much about your Club! With sincere thanks, Jennifer Croce, General Manager

Dear Jen, Thank you for a lovely ladies luncheon today. The meal was delicious and the small details did not go unnoticed. Loved the fresh herbs in the ice cubes! My guest today was all the way from Sydney, Australia. I was proud of my Club and really appreciate the steps being taken to elevate the Club's atmosphere once again. It's feeling more like the Old Agawam which is a good thing! Thank you to you and the entire staff! My best, Amy Fuller, Agawam Member Wow Jennifer, Thank YOU for your kind words. You are too sweet and warm. You even take the chill off of the ice cubes! The Taste of Spain was amazing. My husband ate the leftovers before I could get another shot at them. Nice that Chef can display his talents. I think “gem” is the word to describe the club! You are just what we needed. The wait staff is 100% improved—all good hires, attentive, and personable. We used to suffer through it and now I am coming back twice in one day to taste the fine, fun and unusual offerings! Anne Carty, Agawam Member Jen, all the little touches were definitely appreciated. We were all impressed with the herbed ice cubes and the tennis themed table arrangements. It couldn’t have been better. The little lemon tarts were phenomenal as was all the food. Thanks again. Alice Nichols, Agawam Member Loved this newsletter. I have seen newspapers with less news and human interest. Love the cover, as usual. It appears you and your team are bringing this "little gem" back to life. Go get 'em little warrior!! It's great to see how supportive the members and staff are of your leadership. Sharon Ayres, Retired Industry Consultant Jen, Yes, I am in need of some rest but I am playing tennis tonight with the Mixers! Thank you for all you do. It was a great day today. My guest was very impressed with the golf course and the luncheon. Thanks for your attention to all the details. I know that there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make a day like today happen. My best, Amy Fuller, Agawam Member

Jennifer, We had a lovely tennis event on the grass and I am so glad you were there to greet us and meet my friend Laura who was on her way to the Cornell reunion where you are both alums! I know she was absolutely delighted to meet you! It was a great luncheon too, and my guests just loved it- ice cubes and all! Another asked for the membership fees. Also, I have to add that since my daughter finished Middle School this week, we went right back last night to enjoy the Spanish Night Dinner. That also was exceptional and the flavors were so intriguing. We certainly wanted to be able to enjoy that special night, see our friends there, and we were glad we did. You are doing such a fantastic job I must say. Thanks for working so hard to improve our club and making it more interesting! We appreciate all the help and details! Anne Carty, Agawam Member Hello Everyone, After lunch, golf, grandchildren and book group I wanted to be sure to send off a quick note of thanks to you all. I feel that Agawam's ladies' guest day was exceptional today. I have heard rave reviews about the course, the golf, the food, the flowers, the favors,- a good time was had by all! I truly appreciate the expert support you and your staff gave us in making today such an enjoyable event. Agawam was shining today! Thank you so very much, Dottie Hunter, Agawam Member

Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much for sending this! I appreciate your level of communication and news, it is exceptional! Sincerely, Claudia Majorana, Agawam Member Hi Jennifer, Just passing along a note of thanks. Everything went as smooth as possible. Appreciate the help. Bob Ward, Executive Director, Rhode Island Golf Association Thank you Jen. It feels so nice to be a valued employee. Inez Silva, Agawam Assistant Office Manager

I thought the lunch today was terrific. Let’s touch base about the menu tomorrow when I meet with you about the ladies golf day at 3:00. I think we should do something very similar with a few changes for those who were there today. Everyone loved the menu and the food was delicious!! Thanks again Alice for your help with this. Your gifts for Susan and Amy were very thoughtful and they both really appreciated them! Mary Reineman, Agawam Board Member, ‘Not So Junior” Committee Chair Patrick, thanks for filling in twice when needed! Jen, the lunch was beautiful and delicious and it was so nice to see everyone in the snow- I mean tennis whites. Very nice planning Mary, Alice, Jennifer, and Patrick -I so enjoyed it! Anne Carty, Agawam Member I forgot to send you some extremely positive feedback from the Racquets Committee. They ALL, without exception, praised the amazing transformation of how the Clubhouse, food and Club communication has improved and couldn't stop raving about what an amazing job you are doing with the place and how professional you are in every aspect of your work. They also said that staff demeanor and professionalism has improved drastically under your tutelage. I can also pass some positive mojo every once in a while! Basically, awesome job. They are all extremely happy and feel very fortunate to have you! Patrick Montane, Director of Tennis

Thank you Jen for all your hard work and appreciation. Ellen Girelli, Agawam Office Manager Don and I would like send to our gratitude Agawam Hunt staff for our beautiful wedding on May 28, 2016. Don and I fell in love with the venue the moment we toured it. The old character and charm of the building, the outdoor terrace, lawn games and firepit were exactly what we envisioned for our wedding. We knew immediately, we would be getting married there, we didn’t know however, that we’d also be working with some extraordinary people. First off, Jennifer Croce, you are amazing! Although we only met a month before the wedding, you were absolutely wonderful to work with! Thank you for keeping me organized, for seeing our vision, and for being a bride’s best friend! I only wish I had met you sooner. Don and I would like to give a special thank you to Gray for always being there throughout the entire planning process and for being so incredibly helpful on the wedding day. Thank you to Adrian, Kasey, and the rest of the serving staff for being so helpful, for your creativity in decorating the venue, and above all your excellent service. I even had other vendors complimenting your impeccable service! To the kitchen staff and Chef, the food was delicious and the portions were generous! So many guests complimented the food! A 5 star meal!! We truly can not thank you all enough for a beyond perfect day! It was such a pleasure meeting and working with you all! Thank you so much!! Sincerely, Mr. & Mrs. Swift , Agawam Bride and Groom 2016 On behalf of the entire back of house....THANK YOU for all of your hard work with the epic nightmare you walked into. All of the hard work you do is appreciated and respected. Chef Joe, Agawam Interim Exec Chef

Art Deacon and Ed Thomsen

The 2016 Dinger Invitational Member-Guest is in the books and we have a new first time overall championship team with Ed Thomsen and his long time guest, Art Deacon. Ed and Art captured the Cornish Flight by one point over David Duffell and his guest, his brother Paul Duffell. The Duffell team qualified for the playoff as a wild card team having the highest point total without winning their flight. Also qualifying for the playoff were Parks Flight winners, John Parziale and his guest Michael Follick, along with former champs Walter Hunter and his guest Terry Steelman from the Ross flight. In the four team, three hole aggregate playoff, Ed and Art jumped off to a quick lead with a team net six on the 16th hole. The Duffells were just one back at net seven while team Hunter and team Parziale were two shots back. The Thomsen-Deacon team stretched their lead with a total of net seven on the 17th hole. That could only be matched by the Hunter-Steelman duo while the Duffell team made net eight to fall two back. Ed and Art managed to come down the 18th and make a net nine for a total three hole score of 22. Both David and Paul Duffell made bogeys for net pars to make it come down to the last putt where Art Deacon was able to clean-up a 20 inch putt for a one shot margin of victory. This was after Ed buried a six foot downhill putt to salvage a net 5. Congratulations, gentlemen!

The 2016 Ladies of the Links Member-Guest was the best ever with 56 players competing on 14 teams in their choice of a Best Ball or Scramble Format. The weather was spectacular as we teed off just before 9am. The pace of play was perfect as most of the groups finished within 15 minutes of each other. Then everyone met in the main clubhouse where Jen and her staff treated them to a fantastic lunch as I recognized the winning teams and individual skill winners on the course.

We also enjoyed the many photos of the teams and action photos from the course which included a few aerial photos taken with the drone before tee-off. I’m attaching a link for anyone who would like to download any of these photos for their own enjoyment. Just copy and paste the link below.

Congratulations to Julia Bush and Mary Glenn for their Ladies of the Links leadership this season and special recognition to Peggy Duffell, Mary Reineman and Dottie Hunter who took care of all of the details for this year’s tournament. Job well done!

Team Agawam had a great win over Ledgemont’s team in our first official match up of the year. The kids were sinking putts and hitting it close but most importantly they had smiles on their face while having a blast playing golf! Here are some pictures and results from the match. Practice will continue this week on Wednesday at 4:30pm. A quick note, the time for the TPC Match on July 2nd will be at 4:30pm instead of 3:30pm.

Congratulations Team Agawam
