The surrealists themselves often played automatic writing and drawing games to unlock the creative potential of the unconscious mind and our partners at Big Car and Indy Reads will re-create these experiences for you.

Surrealism, a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature, sought to unleash imagination by tapping into the unconscious mind and juxtaposing incongruent objects and ideas. Influenced

by Sigmund Freud, surrealists believed societal expectations and taboos weigh down our ability to be truly creative.

Artists such as Salvador Dali, Frieda Kahlo, René Magritte, Joan Miró, and writer André Breton instead looked to the subconscious to find inspiration.

These artists and writers often turned the vivid and bizarre aspects of their dreams and subconscious thoughts into works that have influenced generations.

The RSA Spirit & Place offerings are presented by The Alan and Linda Cohen Center for Jewish Learning and Living at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Castleton United Methodist Church, Northminster Presbyterian Church, and Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis.

Five afternoons of visual arts, music, poetry, and performance art inspired by the Genesis story of Jacob’s dreams with audience and visitors participation.

This year’s Spirit & Place Festival will feature on-going programming in the Indianapolis Artsgarden in which the story of Jacob’s dreams is explored. Fourteen artists participating in the “Religion, Spirituality, and the Arts” (RSA) initiative will entertain the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 7, from 12:30-1:30pm with performances meant to inspire attendees to tap into their own imaginations and spiritual dreams.

Throughout the rest of the week, visitors are encouraged to draw with oil pastels, write poetry, play rhythmic music, and dance their own dream interpretations. Artists and volunteers will be on hand to talk about their artistic discipline and inspire participation.

Rabbi Sandy Sasso’s 20 year affiliation with Spirit & Place set the stage for her development of “Religion, Spirituality, and the Arts” – a seminar that brings together interfaith artists for an intensive examination of a specific Biblical text that they then use as inspiration for a new piece of art.

Fueled by the experience, alumni have partnered with each other to highlight their work in the Indianapolis Artsgarden during the festival.

Veterans Reclaim Armistice Day: Dreaming of Rights for People with Disabilities Saturday, November 7, 2-3:30pm

NPR’s Steve Inskeep leads a discussion and resource fair on the healing impact of the arts and humanities related to the physical and mental wounds of war.

Veterans, their families, and those who care about the status of veterans in our community are invited to a resource fair and panel discussion focused on how physically and mentally wounded veterans can use the arts and humanities as a way to deal with their experiences and/or challenges.

The resource fair will feature creative works by veterans as well as information for those interested in getting more involved in the community. The panel will include moderator Steve Inskeep from NPR’s “Morning Edition,” as well as veteran/New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván, his therapy dog Tuesday, and other veterans. Their discussion will include personal insights on how veterans can cope with their war wounds by exploring their creative sides through the arts and humanities.

Explore how music has the power to confront injustice, speak for marginalized groups, and raise awareness of social justice causes.

Recent events in our nation have shined a new light on issues surrounding police violence, race and racism, sexism, and other social justice causes. Using music from the 1920s through today, this workshop invites participants to examine the history of oppression in America and how music can and has been an empowering and liberating force. By discussing our shared history and listening for the commonalities and themes that continue to ring out in song, participants will work with youth facilitators and each other to understand the role they can play in creating a more just society. This inter-generational workshop ends with a call to action for attendees to not only dream, but to act on ways they can improve Central Indiana.

The Choreography of Dreams Winner of the Central Indiana Senior Fund’s “Dreaming a New Age: Living into the Choices and Decisions of Aging” Award

Incorporating dance, poetry, and videos, this innovative program celebrates the value seniors bring to a community’s life.

We all age. But how we age, where we age, and who we age with, looks different for everyone because “senior citizens” are as diverse as society at large. In this beautiful, evocative, and participatory event, The Choreography of Dreams will challenge and inspire audience members with dance, music, poetry, and video stories of community elders. By exploring the dreams and realities of older adults in thought-provoking, personal, and stereotype-free ways, the very nature of aging will be celebrated in this award-winning entry into the Spirit & Place Festival.

Spoken words, imagery, movement, and music combine in a profound way to highlight the complex and meaningful last third of life. Along the way, audience members will be invited to reflect in a “Dream Session” creative workbook that will enable older audience members and their families to continue an exploration and discussion of how we feel and what we believe about ourselves as we age.

Inter-generational discussion and displays of personal mementos tell the stories of dreams achieved or lost in a community.

What are your neighborhood, congregational, or family stories? Neighbors and others are invited to bring their mementos, photos, and other collectibles to this intergenerational story-sharing event. Interact with new and old friends to swap memories of the past and dreams for the future of the neighborhood. Attendees are encouraged to be an integral part of this event by bringing their artwork, photos, writings—anything that can be used to jog memories and elicit stories—to share neighborhood stories and dreams.

Walk-ins will be welcomed by greeters who will direct them to the interactive exhibits.

Powerful event exploring the connection between addiction and dreams.

Where is the connection with dreams and addiction?

With both, there can be a quest of the spirit—a longing to know oneself better. The word “spirit” is often used to describe the non-physical aspects of who we are emotionally and personally. Ironically, alcohol is often referred to as “spirits.” Alcohol and drugs are used by some to feel more comfortable with who they are.

This event will explore the relationship between the work of psychiatrist Carl Jung, author of Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1963), and the 12 steps of recovery millions have successfully utilized to achieve and sustain a deeper spiritual experience that is essential, in Jung’s opinion, for healing. Alumni and Fairbanks volunteer coordinator Kathleen Gill, director of Indiana Addiction Issues Coalition Kim Manlove, and Jungian analyst Gary Sparks will discuss the power of dreams and how dream work can enhance the road to recovery. Photography exhibition by Michael Alrichs also included. Discover how dissecting dream imagery can uncover powerful life lessons.

Through story and music, a Montana jazz artist celebrates forging an arts refuge in a mountain mining town unaccustomed to strong women leading alternative lifestyles.

Can dreams bring us home? We all have dreams—some specific, others universal. Some of us dream of a world free of prejudice where no one is judged for their age, race, religion, sexuality, or who they love. Many LGBT individuals have evacuated their childhood homes in search of a “dream” community filled with companionship and safety because, for them, home and place are illusive dreams.

Montana jazz artist MJ Williams left her small Montana town to find refuge with her partner on the west coast. But Montana was their home and that’s where they returned in 1973. Guided in conversation by Gregory Hinton–creator and producer of Out WestTM, a national program series dedicated to LGBT history in the American West–hear MJ’s story of how she, her partner, and friends created the Montana Artists Refuge in a mountain mining town unaccustomed to strong women leading alternative lifestyles.

Enjoy a jazz performance by MJ Williams and a dream-sharing activity after hearing her story.

A glimpse into the science and the art of dreams. Experts in neurology and art therapy discuss the inner workings of our dreaming minds.

How the dreaming mind works remains surprisingly unknown. Science of Sleep dares to answer: How do we dream? Why do we dream? What purpose do our dreams hold?

Examining dreams from the perspectives of science and art therapy, by neurologist Dr. Robert Pascuzzi and art therapist Juliet King, the audience will learn about the biology, neurology, and psychology of brain science as well as the creative, personal, and imaginative aspects of dreaming. The history of dream theory, symbolism, and how dreams inform the work of art therapists will also be explored before attendees are invited to tour the museum and view artwork created by members of the Indiana Art Therapy Association as part of a summer-long visual dream journaling project.

Cabaret performance with storytelling and songs from Gail Payne’s journey to realize her dreams as a singer.

Gail’s inspiration for this show comes from her favorite quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. ... We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson Gail Payne mustered the courage to let her light shine as she serenaded friends in her living room. Four years later, she will perform an exclusive Spirit & Place Festival cabaret of stories and songs about her journey to realize her dreams and about what happens when we choose to let our light shine.

In partnership with the Indiana Historical Society, Gail’s musical selections will also feature the songs – and stories – of notable Hoosiers such as Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, and Eli Lilly who tackled their fears and overcame hurdles to also let their lights shine.

Always dreamed of playing an instrument? Have your first lesson on stage at the Hilbert Circle Theatre—a fun event for adult beginners!

Grab a violin and take your place on stage at the Hilbert Circle Theater, iconic home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO) faculty, Shannon Crow and Jesse Hawkins, as well as student mentors, will teach our rookie/rusty musicians the notes needed to play MYO’s signature piece, Pachelbel’s Canon in D. As a grand finale, musicians will experience the magic of performing Pachelbel’s Canon onstage with violin soloist, Jesse Hawkins. (Not sure playing an instrument is right for you? During the 1960s and 70s, thousands asked why the American Dream was out of reach to so many. They organized. They protested. They sought to make America more equal—and entrenched interests fought back. The FBI, led by J. Edgar Hoover, spread paranoia and distrust by use of surveillance, infiltration, and misinformation. The documentary film 1971 tells the story of the protesters and the journalists who exposed COINTELPRO, a secret FBI surveillance program that targeted Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Angela Davis, and others.

After a screening of 1971, join in discussion with filmmaker Johanna Hamilton and Bonnie and John Raines, two of the individuals who broke into FBI offices in 1971 to bring truth to light.

Desmond Tutu Center executive director and anti-apartheid leader Allan Boesak shares how he dared to dream of a better future for his beloved county, South Africa.

Dr. Allan Boesak has been internationally recognized for his influential leadership and activism in the fight against apartheid in his native South Africa. During the 1980s he worked alongside Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela to promote a more just society and reconciled community. Since then, he has emerged as a global voice for human dignity, reconciliation, and social justice.

Before hearing from Allan Boesak, audience members will be engaged in an interactive presentation led by youth from the Kheprw Institute that will help them understand how their life circumstances have played a role in where they are today. By contemplating one’s “place” in the world, the stage will be set to not only hear Allan Boesak’s story but to hear it in light of one’s own story so as to consider how challenges and privileges shape our personal and collective dreams.

Dr. Boesak’s presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A session.

Celebrate the voices of Indianapolis elders in a multimedia performance filled with the laughter, joys, tears, and wisdom of life.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art has joined forces with a diverse group of community partners to celebrate the voices of community elders. The Voices Project represents an intergenerational and cross-sector collaboration to harvest the rich stories and living histories of Indianapolis. This multi-stage process began with the youth of Kheprw Institute who interviewed elders from the Northwest Area Community and Flanner House of Indianapolis Senior program to explore how their hopes and dreams evolved over the decades. Know No Stranger then translated these stories into a multimedia performance filled with the laughter, joys, tears, and wisdom life provides after seventy plus years on earth!

This event will begin with a “light mixer” followed by a performance by Know No Stranger.

A brief discussion between the youth and seniors who participated in this collaboration will round things out before audience members have the opportunity to document and share their own hopes and dreams.

Film screening of the otherworldly 1946 classic A Matter of Life and Death followed by a discussion about hallucination, illness, and recovery onscreen and in real life.

Roger Ebert called A Matter of Life and Death (1946) “one of the most audacious films ever made.” Like the 1990 film Awakenings, it approaches what could be a bleak subject— neurological illness—and explores the vast expanses contained within the human heart and mind. The film depicts British Air Force pilot Peter Carter (David Niven) after a near death experience in which on-going hallucinations (waking dreams) convince him he was not meant to survive.

After the screening (104 min), two members of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, Diane Friedman and Kathy Hubner, will lead a short discussion. Friedman, author of A Matter of Life and Death: The Brain Revealed by the Mind of Michael Powell (2008), will highlight how the filmmakers made use of neuroscience medicine and Hubner, winner of the 2015 National Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice Neuroscience Nursing, will share stories of patients who have transcended seemingly insurmountable barriers.

Holocaust survivor and forgiveness advocate Eva Kor will share her story and dreams for a better world.

Eva Kor is a survivor of the Holocaust and forgiveness advocate whose personal story of trauma is a brilliant example of the power of the human spirit to overcome even the unimaginable and to dream of a better world.

Eva Kor and her twin sister Miriam were born in Romania in 1934. When Eva and Miriam were six, their village was occupied by the Nazis and eventually the family was packed into a cattle car and transported to Auschwitz. After 70 hours without food or water, Eva emerged onto the selection platform at Auschwitz where she realized her father and two older sisters were gone. Soon after, the girls were forcibly taken from their mother.

Eva never saw her parents again. Eva and Miriam became part of Dr. Josef Mengele’s grotesque human experiments where approximately 1,500 sets of twins were abused and tortured. Eva and Miriam miraculously survived and in 1984 Eva founded CANDLES: Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors.

Hear Eva’s powerful story during this presentation, Q&A session, and book and DVD signing of Echoes of Auschwitz (2000), Surviving the Angel of Death (2012), and Forgiving Dr. Mengele (DVD, 2006).

Fabric, sewing, and quilting are literally interwoven into our history, but rarely considered “important.” But quilts are more than just blankets we sleep and dream under—they are a record of family history, stories, and events. Sometimes they are even an expression of abstract design. This event invites guests to see and learn how early hand-sewing transformed from the practical art of blanket-making into a vibrant art form that now, often, never sees a bed!

Listen to historic interpreters from Freetown Village as they share tales about the history of African American quilting. Explore quilting displays—and even the Stutz Artist’s Gallery invitational fiber arts exhibition, Make Your Mark: Dream—and listen to a presentation of “The West was Won with Needle and Thread” by Threads of Time Creative Sewing and Retreat Center. Internationally recognized African American historian and folklorist Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, as well as experts from The Quilters’ Hall of Fame, will also speak.

Professional quilters from Quilting by the Stitch will provide a hands-on quilt-block experience that will be assembled into a special Spirit & Place quilt. College Mentors for Kids will display pieced fashions the youth created. Guests are even invited to bring their own quilts for an informal analysis by Caryl Scheutz.

This on-the-go outing offers a unique opportunity to renew the spirit while visiting several mystery destinations to learn about the people and places making dreams come true in Indianapolis.

This interactive and exciting event offers the chance to visit five mystery locations that each foster dreams or support individuals working to achieve their dreams.

During the “chase,” participants will be given an envelope at each destination with information about the next stop. The envelope includes precise directions for driving and parking. The five community partner venues are unique and each offers its own creative and uplifting take on “dream.” Wear comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate attire, and be prepared for a few potentially messy hands-on activities. You will have the chance for photos along the way, a lunch stop, and time for reflection and feedback before the adventures ends.

Suite Dreams Are Made of These!

A transformational experience for children, especially those with hearing impairments, to participate in The Nutcracker while discovering the joy of dancing and fulfilling their dreams.

After a “short and suite” preview performance of the lively dream-inspired dances from Act II of The Nutcracker by the Indianapolis School of Ballet, children may come onstage to explore the brightly-colored costumes, experience the Nutcracker story through a narrator and an ASL interpreter, and participate in an introductory ballet workshop.

Dancers of all abilities will engage their bodies in this specially created workshop for children—including those with hearing impairments. In addition to learning basic ballet steps, the dancers will experience sections of The Nutcracker choreography and creative movements that reenact the classic holiday tale.

Discover what Indy’s emerging artists, entrepreneurs, religious leaders, and others dream for the future of our city.

The Spirit & Place Festival was born out of a “public conversation” between Kurt Vonnegut, Dan Wakefield, and John Updike in 1996. These three literary giants explored the connection between the arts, humanities, and religion and the role the places we come from shape us— and how we in turn can shape those places.

Twenty years later, we’re shining a light on emerging voices and talent in our community by asking some of Indianapolis’s newest leaders to share their thoughts on our city’s current state as well as its future. What are their dreams and frustrations with Indianapolis today?

What role do they see for the arts and humanities in shaping Central Indiana? How are religious congregations striving to make an impact and shape our city’s future? What does place-making mean for this generation of leaders and how can they—and the rest of us— work to achieve positive collective impact over the next twenty years?

Place-making art activities by Big Car, DREAM inspired remarks by best-selling author Dan Wakefield, and celebratory toast to 20 years of community impact by Spirit & Place also included!

Presenters » The first executive director to serve at Groundwork Indy, Phyllis Boyd is an artist, urban designer, and landscape architect. Her work at Groundwork Indy focuses on community-based strategies for revitalizing neighborhoods with emphasis on youth employment, green spaces, brownfields, and healthy communities.

The Director of Governmental Affairs at the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council, David Sklar, is a past-president of the statewide Indiana Coalition on Human Services and is a leading advocate on various public policy issues including human service funding, poverty, public education, and immigration.

Marshawn Wolley is the board president of The Exchange–a young professionals organization of Indianapolis Urban League. He also served as the Director of Emerging Business and Community Outreach for the 2012 Super Bowl Host Committee and is currently the Director of Partner Relations for Visit Indy.

Rev. Anastassia Zinke of All Souls Unitarian Church in Indianapolis was ordained in November of 2013. She previously served in a variety of pastoral functions in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Massachusetts. A newer religious voice in Central Indiana, Rev. Zinke is passionate about social justice causes, community service, and interfaith dialogue. She is active with the Interfaith Hospitality Network, IndyCAN, and the Center for Interfaith Cooperation.
