Ok, so did Christmas just come out of nowhere or what?! I have to admit that I was not ready for the holidays at all until recently when I was asked to be a guest “blogger” and write a post on the Moda Fabrics blog called The Cutting Table. They were doing a series on JOY and I was among several others in the quilting industry that had been asked to contribute. We all just had one direction for our post…to write about JOY. Isn’t that such a wonderful word? Three little letters that seem to manifest into such big feelings. It was interesting to read about everyone’s experience with joy this holiday season and about the different ways that joy presents itself in their lives. Please grab a cup of coffee and take some time to read all the different posts on the blog in December. I know it will get those warm fuzzy feelings stirring inside and truly get you in the spirit of the Holidays. Now on to 2014…it is just a few days away! Around here we have been planning for this spring since early fall (you never get used to that). I have to say that I am super excited for the things that we have coming your way in 2014. Some really fun and talented guest teachers are travelling far and wide to be with you this year and we have some super events coming your way that you won’t want to miss. If there is one hands-down thing that you must attend this next year, it is Sewapalooza this summer. I won’t spill the beans just yet but make sure to be in Vegas at the end of June for a spectacular summer sewing event! I won’t drag on any longer...just sit back, relax and curl up with this 21st issue of The Stash. I hope you enjoy it and start marking your calendars to be with us in 2014. May JOY fill your hearts this holiday season and we look forward to serving you in the New Year! Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year! – Jennifer and the Quiltique Family

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?

That is called a QR Code or a Quick Response Code and is a mobile phone readable barcode. The purpose of this little guy is to get you to online information…quickly. You do need to have a smartphone with a camera to benefit from a QR code, but we figure the majority of you own one by now. Just download any QR Code reader app from your app store for free. Then, just hold the phone over the QR code (you will see it on your screen) and the phone will immediately take you to the internet and the information we want you to see! We have added these codes all over The Stash so you can easily learn more online about what you are reading or see cool videos that demonstrate feet, notions, techniques and more! Watch for class preview videos coming soon to a future edition of The Stash! Enjoy! The Stash | January 2014 – April 2014

About Natalia... Natalia Whiting Bonner has enjoyed piecing quilt tops for more than twenty years. She learned how to quilt on her conventional home machine. She felt good about it, but decided that if she really wanted to take her quilting to the next level, she needed to invest in a longarm machine. In 2007, when she was pregnant with her daughter, she got the crazy idea to quit her job as a dental assistant and become a longarm quilter. Without really knowing what a longarm machine was, she spent a day at a longarm dealer’s shop and walked out after purchasing a Gammill machine. Natalia’s passion for quilting and being creative has grown each day since. Whether it’s working on an intense show quilt or a simple baby quilt, Natalia has become a real quilting addict. She has won numerous awards for her work and has been featured on Moda Bake Shop, in Quiltmaker Magazine and American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine, and in books such as Fresh Fabric Treats, Modern Blocks and Sweet Celebrations with the Moda Bake Shop Chefs, Modern Quilts From the Blogging Check out Universe. Natalia is the author Natalia’s of Beginner’s Guide to Freewebsite here! Motion Quilting and co-author of Modern One-Block Quilts.

About Terry…

HEXIE GARDEN

At Atkinson Designs, quilting is one of life’s simple pleasures. Terry is a former home economics teacher whose love of quilting morphed into teaching quilting classes at a local quilt shop. Her first two patterns came from her most popular classes in 1994. They were sold locally and later that year she went national with a pattern distributor. In 1997, International Quilt Market came to Terry’s home state, and she happily exhibited her work for the first time. Soon Terry’s pattern line grew to include books, and the family-run business grew along with it.

ONE SWEET SPRING

Meet Our Staff and Teachers…Deborah Young

Quiltique has been fortunate to have Deborah teaching at the shop since 2011. She is one of our primary garment teachers and also enjoys teaching bags and quilts. Any class you take with Deborah will have creative and useful tips and tricks that you will enjoy using in your sewing projects. Deborah was a California girl until 1990 when she moved to Las Vegas. She was born in Los Angeles, but grew up in Merced and attended college in San Francisco. Deborah’s mom taught her to sew around the age of 10, even though her mom didn’t seem to enjoy it as much as Deborah does. Her grandmother was a quilter, and has been her inspiration for a lot of the projects she does with vintage fabric, buttons and trims (Deborah’s specialty). Deborah likes to be challenged in her sewing. She enjoys everything from selecting the fabric and embellishments to interpreting the pattern and sewing the piece. She feels a sense of accomplishment in each of her creations.

An all new Block of the Week! Starting in March We just can’t stop with these adorable Block of The Week patterns from Kimberbell. The sweetness of spring is captured in this whimsical (and sweet!) wall hanging. Learn new techniques like paper piecing, simple appliqué, and more through free video links that are included! There is also a choice for the banner to either read “Spring” or “Easter” giving you the perfect sentiment to adorn your wall. Beginning March 1st, and every Saturday for 5 weeks, stop by the shop and pick up your blocks…or have them mailed to you. The fee for this BOW project is $65 and must be paid at time of sign up. Everything is included in this quilt (except backing), even all the dimensional trimmings! The finished size is 40” x 40”. If you bring in your completed blocks when you pick up the next, you will receive a “punch” on your BOW Participation Card. This punch will accumulate a discount each week that could earn you up to 25% off any one item in the shop after the BOW is completed (some restrictions apply). Limited kits are available, and will “hop” out of here fast, so call us today!

Deborah does more than just sew in her spare time. She enjoys bicycling, practicing yoga and playing dominoes, but not at the same time. It is apparent she has a sense of humor also. Watch for Deborah’s classes, and get to know this terrific lady we admire and appreciate.

CAMILLE ROSKELLEY AND BERNINA - The Dream Team!

Local quilt and fabric designer, Camille Roskelley has teamed up with BERNINA as a new BERNINA Ambassador! Camille has been a friend of Quiltique for years and we could not be more excited that she is a now a friend of BERNINA as well…officially, that is. Learn a bit about Camille below and look forward to what she will create with her new BERNINA 710! Tell us a little bit about your company and yourself. Let’s see… well, first of all, I am a mom to three wild little boys that keep me on my toes. I’m also a 4th generation quilt maker, and learned to sew from my mom, just as my mother did. I started my pattern company, Thimble Blossoms back in 2007 and have designed over 70 original patterns. I design fabric for Moda with my mom, Bonnie Olaveson, and we just turned in our 11th fabric line! I’ve written two books with C&T, as well as teaching classes over at Craftsy.com. I love to sew, and spend almost all of my spare time in my sewing room. I also love Cafe Rio, waterskiing, and staying up late. We know you design fabric for Moda, how did that come about? My mom had been designing patterns for years, and I was about a year into my new company, Thimble Blossoms, when they called and asked if we would be interested in collaborating on a mother/daughter line. It was a BIG yes! We’ve had to learn a lot of new things along the way, but working with Moda has been such a dream come true for both of us. When did you first learn to sew? I learned to sew when I was 5 or 6 years old, and my love of quilting started 16 years ago. I started my pattern company, Thimble Blossoms, back in 2007, and have been sewing like crazy ever since!

The Stash | January 2014 – April 2014

When were you first exposed to the BERNINA brand? My grandma taught my mom to sew on a BERNINA, I learned to sew on a BERNINA, and when I bought my first sewing machine, it was, of course, a BERNINA. It was love at first stitch for all three of us! What was your first BERNINA, and what are you sewing on now? My first BERNINA was a 210 that I bought after Bob [at Quiltique] convinced me I couldn’t live without it. He was right! I sewed on that for a few years before moving up to the 430, which I still use daily, and now I’m sewing on a 710. It’s an amazing machine! What is your favorite feature of the new 710 you are sewing on? I couldn’t pick one, but I think I can narrow it down to three. Throat space, enormous bobbin, and automatic thread cutter. How did I live without any of them? There’s no going back! What can we look forward to seeing come of your new BERNINA Ambassadorship? Oh, I have a lot of sewing up my sleeve! I’ve got several quilting tutorials lined up over at We All Sew, as well as some fun events, and projects coming up. I’ll keep you posted over at my blog, camilleroskelley. com. Stop by and say hello!
