As I learn about different architectural environments, I am amazed by the architectural beauty found in nature. Architecture is about problem-solving, creating new solutions, and thinking creatively to make the impossible possible. I want to make a positive impact on people’s lives and to inspire them to become who they aspire to be.

BERKLEY STROKE REHABILITATION

The studio will invite our students to develop innovative approaches toward better support for stroke survivors and their families and caregivers.

ARMOURDALE ART HUB & GARDENS

We will explore alternative methods by which architecture serves its surrounding community by requiring new approaches and methods of programming, design and forms of communication with design partners and end-users.

BERKLEY BREW AND LODGE

As a class we created a world renown site which includes the three essentials of life: living, work, and play. My partner and I wanted to ensure that our design provided an immersive living experience in order to truly create a world renown worthy experience.

BERKLEY STROKE REHABILITATION | KANSAS CITY, MO The studio will embrace the understanding of Stroke survivors’ health and wellness from a holistic approach, which integrates prevention and healing, physical, social, and mental health, environment and local context, current and future technology, ergonomics, human experience, and process efficiency and care effectiveness into an integrated design solution.

The leading design concept behind this project aside from the desire to create a facility of replenishment was to create a visual distinction between inpatient and outpatient facilities with a strong connector between the two. The two wings as shown by the above rendering are inpatient (left) and outpatient (right) with the Wellness bridge connecting them. The two wings were designed to have a more home-like design to create a sense of warmth and welcoming. The Wellness bridge was created as a contrast to the wings in a more industrial design.

This project was completed in pairs. Partners shared equal responibility in each phase of the project and the creation of final deliverables was evenly distributed.

01. THESIS STATEMENT

02. DESIGN

To create a place not only of healing but of regeneration and replenishment. Our goal as designers is to create a sanctuary for stroke survivors and community members. A place that takes the stigma of isolation and illness and transforms that into wellness and renewal. We have incorporated a series of additional wellness spaces to enhance stroke survivor’s experiences throughout the facility based on the results of our research findings.

The rendering above was created from the main street running through Berkley Riverfront Park (Berkley Parkway) facing north toward the Missouri River. This is the view patients and visitors will see as they either drive through the park or are drive into the facility parking. The facade and especially the front entrance were designed to greet patients and their loved ones with a warm and inviting welcome.

The terracotta facade is lined with rustic lace design metal panels and the site has been designed to provide as much connectivity with nature as possible. In addition to having foliage on the facade and near the entrance a series of gardens have been incorporated into the facility program.

STROKE SURVIVOR SPACE

Although indoor spaces, especially stroke survivor’s rooms, are very important components, this competition challenges you to go beyond “bedrooms” in inpatient stroke rehabilitation facilities. It can be either a comprehensive proposal considering private and public spaces and indoor and outdoor environments, or a very focused, creative approach that solves a specific design problem for stroke survivors or related care.

TWO STORY REHABILITATION GYM 01. PATIENT DINING

The two-story rehabilitation gymnasium is located on the wellness bridge between the inpatient and outpatient wings. The gym was designed on the northern side of the bridge to allow patients to have a view of the river and the landscape and gardens surrounding the facility. Because the gym is two stories and is lined with a glass facade patients will also receive optimal natural light during their therapy sessions which will aid in emotional and mental support during times of difficulty. The gym includes treadmills, exercise bikes, parallel bars and more to aid in the regeneration process.

The rendering below shows one of the two patient dining areas. This dining area is located on the north end of the building in the inpatient wing. The dining area similar to the rehabilitation gym is looking out towards the river to provide patients with a relaxing view. In addition, a wood ceiling was incorporated to create a warm inviting environment and an accent wall has been added to bring color and life to the area.

Level 01 BACK OF HOUSE CLINICAL SUPPORT ADMINISTRATION

FLOOR PLANS The first floor consists of four areas; the back of house , clinical support which consists of imaging, pharmacy and lab, the administration area and public area which consists of a restaurant and grocery store. The restaurant and grocery store provide alternative healthy eating options to patient dining as well as provide patients with the opportunity to practice activities of daily living.

The third floor similar to the second floor consists of the inpatient wing on the left though the third floor is open down to the gym to allow for optimum views and natural light. The right wing has roof acces onto what has been designed to be a multi-surface garden and walk area so that patients can practice walking on different surfaces while enjoying a leisurely walk through a nature inspired environment.

ARMOURDALE ART HUB & GARDENS | ARMOURDALE, KS The Armourdale Art Hub & Gardens is located at the corner of Osage Ave and S 8th St. in the Armourale neighborhood in Kansas City, KS. Armourdale is a neighborhood with a strong Hispanic/Latino presence, dating back to as early as the 1830s. Armourdale resembles a strong and enduring spirit as its people have survived continuous hardships, including a series of floods in 1903 and 1951.

During our class site visit. I noticed a prominent artistic presence. I found several murals outlining the hispanic culutre and history of Armourdale, I also noticed several instances of graffiti and ‘tagging’ around the neighborhood.

As a result I strived to create a place where the people of Armourale could celebrate their past, present, future and express themeselves openely. Using the artistic inpsiration from Armourdale I decided to create an art hub.

The Art Hub includes an open space workshop, classrooms, a cafe and an outdoor sculpture garden and exhibition area. The focus for my art hub are the youth of Armourdale. I hope to create a productive alternative to illegal tagging.

The youth of Armourdale can use the Art Hub to learn and develop creative skills such as, painting, drawing, sculpting, ceremics, etc. In addition to the Art Hub I have incorporated single family affordable housing to provide aid to the families of Armourdale.

I additionally incorporated a series of mural walls that will be painted and maintained by the youth of Armourdale to showcase their art to the entire neighborhood.

Lastly, to address Armourdale’s heat island effect issues I have incorporated a series of live walls throughout the building’s facade to provide filtered air as well as provide a welcoming ambience and a bike share station to persuade community members to minimize car usage and reduce carbon emissions.

Our class was tasked with designing a world renown site which included the three essentials of life: living, work, and play. As a result my partner and I wanted to ensure that our design provided an immersive living experience in order to truly create a world renown worthy experience.

Thus, began the idea of a brewery hotel where visitors could stay and relax but also experience how our Signature Berkley Brew is made.
